The garden was the passion project of Thomas Child, an LDS bishop and Salt Lake City businessman. Located in what used to be his backyard, he started the garden when he was 57 years old and worked on it until his death nearly 20 years later! A neighbor then bought the property and made it available for public visitation, and it was ultimately handed over to the city for longterm maintenance and preservation. I don't mean to be insensitive at all, but the garden is one of the most fabulously weird places I've ever visited. The park contains 12 original sculptures that depict various scenes from the Book or Mormon. My favorites include a sphinx with the face of Joseph Smith, and the sacrificial altar dedicated to Childs' wife. "Gilgal" refers a city and valley in LDS literature, and the name means circle of standing stones. If you're in Salt Lake City, this garden is definitely worth a visit. Admission is free, and the park is open from 8AM to 8PM. It's located in a residential neighborhood, so please be respectful of the neighbors. Add this to your list of favorite roadside bits of unique Americana.

It is also incredibly religious in nature, with many biblical quotes carved into stones and art that reflects or is inspired by scripture. It's a little bizarre to be honest and has a creepy, cultish feel. SLC has lots of other great art and gardens where your time could be spent.

The boys and girls of summer, the dreams of summer, the sandlot fantasties--they all get their time in the sun here at Ron Wood. And the fans? The fans, when properly behaved, get treated to games that rival any major league contest. Only it's their kids out on the field. It's the little ones trying not to play clusterball, the grade schoolers who are getting serious about the sport, and the teens who are taking this to a new level. There are blowouts and mercy rules, and there are nail-biters. I never played baseball as a kid, but occasionally I find myself watching games. The facilities here are geared to the game--several large-ish fields, with a pavilion in the middle that houses the concessions stand and the restrooms. I ordered a burger, and though it's a frozen patty thrown on a gas grill like you'd find in any backyard, the kids do a nice job. And I was stoked to see bleu cheese crumbles and Frank's Red Hot sauce as options to top it, so it turns into a nice burger for $4. Loads of parking, green grass, lights, bleachers, and you can come watch your family or friends play. Hello, summer.

The Donner and Reed party were put in such a horrible position by the Hastings cut off. Hastings had never did this route. He was a swindler! It started us on a path we're gonna go to Truckee Lake this summer to honor those teams of men that helped to retrieve these poor souls. And knowing the true story now compared to the sensationalized awful stories that I heard growing up is surprising! This is a story about tragedy and heroism. Those who want to focus on the cannibalism can do so but that's not the first thing they resorted to. That was something that happened much later and was something that was forbidden, but I had to happen just like the crash in 72 Andes mountain situation. It was no different. Nobody wants to have to do that but if you're putting that position between life and death, you will sometimes do things that you don't wanna have to do. I didn't wanna focus on that. I just wanted to say that people should be more understanding and that shouldn't be the focus. It should be about the tragedy and heroism of this story and the only reason why Mormonism is even surrounded with this story is because they had to cut through this area which helped Mormon pioneers later and some of the rescuers were Mormon.

This is a pretty quiet park with No parking lot, and no bathrooms. I would say it's geared more for the people who live in the neighborhood than for the general public. Many dog owners were just letting their dogs run loose (despite the many signs to keep your dog on a leash) so be aware. One of the "loose" dogs started attacking my dog, who was on a leash. That dog owner, and I (needless to say) exchanged unpleasant words. Please be a responsible dog owner when visiting our public parks. My husband and I met up with a friend to go disc golfing here, and I was totally blown away. The…read moremountain views are absolutely gorgeous, and the sunset was beautiful!! The disc golf course isn't anything super special, but it's a good course to get some throws in. There is a walking path throughout the disc golf course, and the park was busy the night we were there. Be prepared to wait a little bit. We didn't mind cause we were catching up with a friend anyway. This park is also directly under the flight path, so you get to see a bunch of airplanes flying overhead which I loved! The trees also smelled amazing. There were a few big softball fields that looked awesome and also the rec center is in the same space. I would highly recommend checking out this park and playing the disc golf course.

And looking at the other reviews, it seems that there is far more to this park than just what I saw. I need to come back and continue to explore. The softball complex has great seating, large bathrooms and is well maintained. There's good lighting for night games and good visibility from any seat in the bleachers (I know, I moved around a lot-I get restless.) There's also ample parking nearby. I did opt to park a little further away from the field, knowing that some of the folks on the team I was watching can hit a ball pretty far and I didn't want to fix a broken windshield.

Not too far from the Utah Cultural Center, you'll find the Pioneer Crossing Regional Park-a modest…read morepark with a playground, restrooms and walking trail. I'll admit, it's not the most beautiful park in the valley, but as I do, I found some good in it regardless. The playground is located right next to the parking lot and there are a few trees that surround it. Depending on the time of day, you might find yourself in a bit of shade. The restrooms are right there, too, although they were locked when I visited around 5pm on a Monday afternoon. The Jordan River Trail walkway goes through this park, so there are marked paths for walking, jogging or biking. Some parts are shaded, but most of the path is not. There also appears to have been a fire at some point (controlled? I'm unsure) and there's a lot of charred vegetation that remains. There's a wobbly suspension bridge that takes you over the river. It's not too big, but if you're nervous about rickety bridges over water, maybe pick a different path.

I rated it 4 stars because it only consists of the playground, field, and pavilion, but everything is good quality and taken care of. Though it isn't very big, it's a perfectly good park to take kids to, have a picnic at, or play field games at. The Cedar Hills Parkway trail runs right along the edge of the field. It's a quick 5 minute walk either direction along the trail to either Heritage Park or Harvey Park. Ultimately, there's nothing extraordinarily special about Sunset Park, but it is a nice park that's well-maintained, spacious, and good quality.

Moyle Park and Museum was such an unexpected and fascinating stop. The historic stone tower is incredibly unique and instantly catches your attention. Once I learned that it may have been built to help protect the Moyle family homestead during early pioneer settlement days, it made the entire experience even more interesting. The park is peaceful, clean, and very well maintained. I really appreciated that Alpine City has preserved these historic structures instead of letting them disappear over time. The museum and pioneer buildings help paint a picture of what life may have looked like for early settlers in Utah. I also loved learning about John Rowe Moyle and his connection to the Salt Lake Temple. Knowing that such an important historical figure once lived here adds another level of meaning to the visit. This is definitely a hidden gem for anyone who enjoys Utah history, photography, local museums, or unique roadside attractions. It's a quick stop, but one that leaves a lasting impression.
