******DO YOUR HOMEWORK PEOPLE!!! ***** I wish I had. I bought a dog with papers indicating 2 breeds, DNA comes back as 4 breeds and ***0%*** for the listed Father's breed! After many months of telling people her breed, listed incorrectly everywhere (vets, groomer, chip, insurance, etc)...trying to understand her possible allergies/skin concerns, unique characteristics, size, etc. It's hard to explain the feeling of paying premium $$$$ for a 50/50 hybrid to find out she's at least FOUR breeds!!! I got curious with people questioning her breed and just got her tested. Now I have to update my story of her... I'm really upset about this and had fallen for the sweet marketing making it sound like this was a "ma and pop" small scale breeder. Nope... lots of cages... reported to have HUNDREDS OF CAGED DOGS AT ANY GIVEN TIME....Please please be careful. We love our fur baby but it's so weird now finding her dominate breed/features wasn't a part of her at all... and to pay a premium for a hybrid "designer breed" that turns out to be a total mix. Good grief!!!!! Breeders know very well that the stores are reselling at premium prices to urban/suburban folks who are looking for a specific breed/ "designer breed"... After sending a couple of emails, a text, and calling Heritage, I did get a call from and eventually spoke with their kennel manager there. She confirmed a few things... 1) They don't allow you to tour the housing/breeding facilities (be aware considering the recent reviews indicating their place is "clean".... you don't get to see the "factory". 2) They disputed the DNA science but admitted they basically made educated assumptions (ie. what they were told) on the breed of the dog's parents... neither the Mom or Dad were tested to ensure their breed 3) They apparently don't guarantee the breed of their dogs. *** DON'T FALL FOR THE PR MACHINE THEY HAVE.***** Website looks like a happy small family breeder.... Nope... this is an industrial scale breeding farm per the previously mentioned news releases and reviews on Petland Puppies. I think they're pushing puppies for direct sale a bit more now because the Petlands in Minnesota shut down due to consumer pressure and protests regarding Petland purchasing from industrial breeders. GOOGLE PETLAND PROTESTS/HERITAGE PUPPIES, Etc. I believe their website previously stated that they didn't allow tours of the facility to see where your puppy was born. Guess why not? *** If you're buying a dog, you likely care about animals. Many of the positive reviews appear possibly fake (some from staff working there!) or are from people who were blinded by the marketing as I was (pet store assuring people the dogs were all from good, responsible, small-scale, inspected breeders, etc). **** If you bought a Heritage Puppy (or other IA breeder), get its DNA tested **** You can send complaints to the various government consumer protection bodies and to the store you got the dog from, and any other parties you feel appropriate. These poor animals! GOOGLE IS YOUR FRIEND. Search, search, search!!!!! Why am I bothering with this review? Because there are many people out there that love animals and wouldn't knowingly support this type of operation. It's up to each of us to do our homework and make our own conclusions on what constitutes a Puppy Mill... and on what we're comfortable with.....and to advise folks of the possibility that their dog's breed might not quite be a match. I got in contact with the DNA company again and they reviewed our sample and assured me it was a quality sample, no error noted, and that she came back as 0% of the stated sire breed as stated on the multiple papers I got. Petland hasn't yet replied. ***PLEASE NOTE: I just waited two weeks to post this as the DNA company offered a free extensive review of the sampling/report and just reconfirmed the reconfirmed results!!! Overcharged retail for a designer breed that's a glorified well mixed "mut". We love her regardless very much but we were cheated!!!*** read more
