I've been coming to Carley's shop since I moved to Brooklyn in August. I had been getting my haircuts at a father-son owned shop in Chicago that had a sincere respect for and tradition in the art of barbering, so I was looking for something very specific in terms of experience when I moved to NYC. Heritage Tonsorial ticks all of the boxes for me. The shop is no-BS simple, tidy, and the vibe is smooth. Carley has an assortment of trinkets and artifacts placed around the shop that signal a man of refined tastes - a charming bottle of Yamazaki 12 resting against a spotless mirror, a bold, metallic clock peering down at a worn-in, leather barbering chair, Japanese magazines filled with gentlemanly musings. Sometimes you'll come in and hear relaxing R&B playing in background. Sometimes it's Larry Levan. You really can't lose with either. Best of all, Carley is just all-around a thoughtful guy that really pays care and attention to his work. He does his best to connect with his clients and curate a character and vibe in the shop that my generation has all but lost touch with. You walk out looking and feeling great. A modest shop owned and operated by a stylish, skilled barber with passion and pride in his craft. No more $40-60 trims from pretentious faddy shops. So this is going to sound weird. But after 15 years of being taken for haircuts as a kid and 25 of finding my own style, and my own barbers, I have finally, finally gotten a proper haircut. Carley Bodden's Heritage Tonsorial is without a doubt the first proper barber I've ever been to. Now without naming names I've been to some other well known and well established outfits but Carley is by far the best. A bit of backstory might help clarify why this is such a big deal. See I grew up in a somewhat posh suburb on Long Island. So as a kid my first hurdle was finding a strong African American community from which to confidently cultivate a style. Hurdle is a severe understatement. I suppose I should mention that I have wooly hair and in that regard if it were otherwise I'm still totally confident, as so many of my Heritage peers are, that Heritage Tonsorial would still be a milestone in my style history. Now this doesn't mean that my father was in search of a wayward salon with which to find a barber that was a pro. Ironically and on multiple occasions in black neighborhoods we faced a lot of resentment for being upwardly mobile 'cause as it happened at the time this was often contrary to what black communities thought the black experiential identity was. So my experiences with styling, professionalism and a personal sense of culture had to navigate a variety of obstacles. So much so that in my 20's I dodged the whole frustration and grew out dreads. But I digress. Flash forward to Harlem in the early 2000's; better, deeper, healthier community - same problem. There were some good shops but none really matched a broad enough sensibility about my pursuit of style and how diverse my personal and professional engagements could be. I was running a small business at the time and my worlds were delicate, complex and varied. All of this is to say that when I met Carley and talked about his shop, his craft and how conscientious he is about bringing quality to his clientele it was a milestone. As far as I'm concerned he gave me my first haircut, executing his profession with experience and insight into my character, style and disposition that I always thought I deserved but couldn't find for 30 some odd years. Vibe was awesome--really old school feel, everything made of wood, jazz playing and everyone talks to each other even if you've never met the person before. I'm not great at yelping but sometimes the best way to help a business (and now friend) is to get on the internet and boast about it. This review is long overdue. It's been almost 2 years now that I have been going to the Heritage Tonsorial and having Carley takes scissors to my hair. Before that I used to just shave my head, but finally decided it was time to grow up a bit and get an actual haircut. Not wanting to spend an inordinate amount of money or go too far from home, my wife found this little gem of a spot on Yelp and suggested it. From the very first cut I knew I would not be going anywhere else while I live in NYC to get my hair cut. For an extremely fair price of $32 (I try to give Carley an additional $20 tip in cash - always tip in cash folks, don't let the card company take a slice of Carley's pie) I get a professional and dope ass haircut from someone who really gives a shit about his career. Carley doesn't treat the haircutting and his shop as a job or business, he treats it as a place of cleanliness, good energy, good conversation, and you will always leave with more confidence than you came in with. You will never have to feel bad about asking him to take a little more off the top, or trim the sides more, or basically do anything that is going to give you the exact cut you wanted when you walked in. Easily the best haircut I've had in New York, and possibly the best I've had period. Carley Bodden is a master of his craft. The place just exudes class, from the second you step in hearing the sound of classic jazz, to the slow, laid back haircut you'll get alongside interesting conversation. By New York standards, the cost is also very affordable. This would probably cost at least double anywhere in the city, and would likely come up short in comparison. I'll never go anywhere else as long as I live in NYC. Never recommended anything on Yelp before, but this experience was too good not to. read more

Just got a great haircut here today. Carley is a master with the scissors and the clippers. I often have trouble getting good haircuts because my hair is kind of unpredictable at different lengths, but Carley diagnosed it in about 5 seconds of mussing. Dude is some kind of hair wizard. Just moved to Bed-Stuy and the first thing I was looking for was a barber. Yelp, thank you for leading me to Carley. I showed him a picture of my last haircut that I liked and off he went. He knows Asian hair and even better, knows how to make you feel at ease. Didn't feel like a haircut for me but a conversation with an old friend. Haircut was over before I knew it. I wanna preface this review by saying that both barbers are exceptionally nice and the store is a really lovely environment. Also my barber did a do a pretty good job and was nice to chat too. However the stinger came at the end when for a literal buzz cut and a beard trim it came to 60 bucks??? At other places this costs me normally 20/30 including tip so I'm still scratching my head as to why this was so so expensive. My haircut was fine there was nothing wrong with it but it's honestly just a half on the sides and a two on top so why it cost me triple what I would normal pay is really annoying. When I got to Heritage, Carley immediately made me feel at home. He acknowledged me, the time my reservation was for, thanked me for coming in and appreciating the fact that it was freezing outside. He even offered me a beverage. Carley was personable, and showed genuine interest in what I was looking for. He was observant and communicative when assessing my current hairstyle and set us up for success. The cut took around a half hour, and it looks better than most of the places I've visited have been able to do. I ended up paying $22 plus tip. Great guy. Great Jazz atmosphere. read more

I was looking for a good alternative to the 60$+ salons and found it here. The other good reviews made me confident enough to try this Bedstuy Barbershop with my longer blonde hair and european idea of what a hairsalon is like. I could tell that the barber had easier tasks than cutting my hair but with time and seemingly unlimited diligence he managed to give me a real good haircut for 22$+tip.
