My son came back from the barber shop upset because the barber said he would not cut his hair again. He said his hair is too thick and he doesn't want to do it because it takes too long. He muttered about his hair throughout the cut and embarrassed my son and then loudly stated he didn't want to cut his hair again. First off, you're getting a $40 cut for $22. Carley worked at those high priced spots in Manhattan then opened his own place and charges less. But he treats you like you're paying $100 (he started me off with a glass of scotch while we listened to jazz). He's beyond the coolest barber, not to mention this was probably the best haircut I've ever received. He's been doing this for over 20 years and is a total pro. I can't recommend him highly enough. It was a Sunday afternoon at 3pm that I hoped I might find a barber in Brooklyn whose shop was still open. Lo and Behold, Heritage Tonsorial came to my rescue. I called the phone number and set up an appointment for 4pm. Carly, the owner/innovator of this joint, arrived on his bicycle on-time. What a personable, positive-thinking, GREAT guy Carly is! And then-- the haircut-- executed with finesse from start to finish. More important, the SHAVE. Wow. I still enjoy remembering Carly's meticulousness as he worked every square millimeter of my face. When he was done, I said, "do I really have to get out of this chair now?" It wasn't your typical in and out place with no real conversation, even when you are waiting he is still chatting with you. I was more than impressed with his work, he takes his time and takes it seriously. All in all he is just a really good soul who really knows how to cut hair. I recently moved to Crown Heights from out of state and hadn't gotten my hair in awhile so it was getting unruly, to the point of embarrassment. I went here after reading many of the good reviews and I have to say Carley didn't disappoint. The shop had a relaxed and classic feel to it and was very clean. He had chill disco music playing in the background as he worked, but said he changes it up based on how the day feels. It felt like he was actually cutting my hair to the beat of the music, which was cool. I'm usually one that's content to sit in silence while I get my hair cut but talking with him was a joy. After telling me about his desire to keep the history and heritage of barbery in mind when working and setting up the shop, I came to respect him. The cut itself was perfect, even with my vague instructions, and the fluid manner in which he worked was impressive. He even offered me some tips on what facial hair style he thought would best work for me. The reasonable cost ($22) was definitely worth it. This is absolutely the place to go. read more

DON'T WASTE YOUR PRECIOUS TIME! This place is like a satirical portrayal of a poorly run business. It would be genuinely funny if it were part of a film. However, as it was my time they wasted with their incompetence, I must say I am far more irritated than amused. My experience was as follows: I called the shop at 12:05, more than an hour after they were supposed to open today. No one answered, so I left a detailed message as instructed. Since I live only a few blocks away, I decided to just walk over. When I arrived, there were several other people in the shop, and the barber who runs the place told me to come back at 1:20. He wrote my information down in a book, which in my experience is a standard procedure for making appointments. When I returned at 1:20, there was a whole other group of people there, who had arrived since I had been there an hour earlier. I waited a few minutes while he was finishing his current customer, assuming I would be next. At 1:30, another customer walked in for his 1:30 appointment. The barber told him there was no way he could take him, and that he should come back in about 40 minutes. The customer seemed very annoyed, but agreed and left. The barber then began preaching about how silly it is when people think that making an appointment implies that they will be admitted approximately at the time of the appointment. I felt like I was in the twilight zone. The barber finished with the customer in the chair, and I figured it was my turn. 10 minutes wait wasn't so bad. Then the barber told me that he was taking another customer before me! A guy who had arrived after I made the 1:20 appointment! The barber then began talking about how "some people expect quick service..." At this point, I decided to cut my losses and go about the rest of my day. I am appalled at the utter disregard for my time and for the concept of a schedule. Needless to say, I will not be returning to this establishment. He stole my time. He lied to me. Instead of apologizing for his own failure to create and adhere to a schedule, he told me I should be willing to wait as long as necessary. What arrogance! Anyone who values his own time even a little bit will agree that this is unacceptable. read more

Great neighborhood addition. Carly aims for an old school barber shop environment, centered around long-term customer loyalty and trust. He achieves this through creating a congenial atmosphere and listening to his customers to mutually find out what works best. He takes much pride in maintaining this environment, far from the run-of-mill chaotic shops that operate on a philosophy of getting as many people in and out. Today, I came in with no appointment just to ask if he'd be able to put my name down for a later appointment. I do not get my hair done at this parlor but my Gentleman friend does, and his hair looks amazing. I had a hard time keeping myself from running my hands through his hair. The neckline is perfect, and his undercut fade is seamless. Guys, if you are looking for a barber I highly recommend Juan Angel Menendez, he has some serious skills. read more

I have never had a barbershop experience like this. It has the look, feel, environment of a high-end swanky barbershop without the price tag. The barber was incredibly nice and inviting. Was a pro at cutting hair. He just knew what he was doing. When I sat in the chair he instantly made suggestions on how to cut my hair that I was open to and I'm glad I listened. Even offered us all a glass of whiskey. Like who does that now a days? Had some jazz playing in the background then switched it up to some really chill hip hop. The last two haircuts were amongst the best, if not the best, I've received in my 4 1/2 years of being in NYC. Always a great cut. Always good conversation. Never disappointed. Each time my cut evolves and improves as Carly gets more familiar with my hair. It's not just about your hair type and what works for you, but how it grows out: what you look like when you come back and how your barber takes that into account before he/she begins to cut again. Came to this establishment after searching for a straight razor shave in park slope. Decided the small trip was worth it as the shop looked to provide the type of 'higher end' / 'spa type' shave I wanted. The shop is nice, and the owner was attentive and seemed to be into providing the full-on shave service (a man who understands male pampering). It was a full 30 min experience with many towels and lotions in-between the steps of the process. I thoroughly enjoyed the shave, and I will be back, tho I do offer 3 points of feedback. 1. I am notoriously bad with time management, but unfortunately it seems like the shop isn't great with it either. I was 15 mins late but still waited for 5 mins before being seated. For some of my session there was no one waiting, then one person, and two by the time I left. I imagine those gents couldn't be very happy. 2. Despite the many towels and multi-step process, I still left with my face feeling irritated and red with some nicked spots of blood still visible. I didn't expect that, figured all the towels would have made sure I wasn't irritated by the time I left. I couldn't go straight to an event if I wanted to. 3. The gentleman asked how I wanted my side burns to which I replied 'natural.' When I got to the car it looked like the had legit sideburns, did not seem like 'natural' to me, and furthermore, they were uneven. I shaved them off later. All in all I applaud this place for the attention to detail with the shave and making it a real treat of an experience. I think with a few adjustments it could have been even better. Especially the part of leaving with my skin looking irritated, there has to be an easy fix to that (more cool towels?). Just my feedback, I'll leave the fixing to the experts ! read more
