Conway Lakes Health & Rehabilitation Center - Very clean inside

Conway Lakes Health & Rehabilitation Center

My parents were here in 2015 and at the time, I was in a bad place because of their health and…read moretrying to move them to michigan. I didn't want to review this place without clarity of thought. First of all, I looked at many sub acute care places at the time and I found this one to have high ceilings, and a pretty courtyard and it looked pleasant and very clean. Janelle, if I remember her name correctly, was THE MOST WONDERFUL speech therapist I have ever known. She was so caring - I don't know how a person can reach outside of themselves to that degree to help others. My dad, an 80 year old professor emeritus at the time of his stay bulked up to the point of looking like an athlete. It made me laugh but was really important for his recovery. They had him in very good shape with tons of physical therapy. The physical therapy department was outstanding! One of them or one of the occupational therapists told me about the LSVT programs available and the colloquial name of Big and Loud program. He hadn't been diagnosed with Parkinson's yet and I had no idea. I thought he had some Bell's palsy. My mom had pretty bad dementia and was a strong willful person. While there I will say there was not enough staff to come running every time her bed alarm went off because she got out of bed. Frankly she was so quick, there wasn't much they could have done if they listened for those alarms. Luckily she never fell and was left there for any time - benefit of having two parents there at same time. My mother was dying of cancer, heart condition and dementia so she ended up in the hospital a couple of times while there, once from falling and hitting her head on the door. She would leap out of bed and run bent over at full speed and there was no way to stop her in time. I do not blame Conway lakes for this at all. Imagine granny from Beverly hillbillies with all the strength but sever dementia. She recognized her family, but everything else was confusing and anxiety causing. The other hospital visit was for a heart attack where she got two stents. They always called immediately to let me know where she was being taken so I could meet the ambulance. I was also able to purchase lunch at the front desk and eat with my parents everyday. We all basically lived there for about two months. The staff was really caring a nice. Especially the CNA's. It did seem that the night nurse had my parents down for tramadol at night which was super upsetting. She said it helped them stay calm and sleep better or something. but when I said no, we did not want that, they didn't give it to them. The administration worked with me on discharge dates etc and were just super helpful in my trying to move my parents to michigan. The discharge person was very nice and helped me hire an aide for the airport to help with one of my parents wheelchairs. All in all, they were hugely helpful. None of the sub acute care places have great staff to patient ratios. At least not in michigan or in Florida as far as I have been able to tell. They are not as well staffed as hospitals so that is always tough. I never saw staff just standing around and chitchatting there. They worked hard and were busy. My mom died a couple of weeks after we got to michigan- but died in her own bed in their apartment with my dad and me there. My dad, moved in with us after that and has been so much better off because of Conway lakes. Because of the PT person who told me about the big and loud program, I knew to get him to a neurologist and an LSVT exercise program and he has been doing really well. Until nov.2020 when he moved a really heavy box and fell and broke his hip. He is now in sub acute care in michigan for rehab and it made me remember Conway lakes and that I never posted a review which I should have after all the help I got there. When they say it takes a village, they were my village!
