The Feast is one of London's only people powered markets, meaning that it is run entirely by volunteers who genuinely care about their local area. This makes it an event with a lot of passion and bags of personality. Catch the Feast on the first Sunday of every month, just hop on the overground to either West Norwood or Tulse Hill rail station and spend the afternoon pootling up and down the high street. Retro, Artisans, Gardening and Food are the four central market Hubs (the clues in the name as to what you will find at them) and each is cleverly woven around a community of vibrant local businesses. The majority of the stallholders are also from the surrounding area, so there is a great community feel. If nothing tugs on your purse strings the Feast also offers free entertainment throughout the day - live music, face painting, theatre and you may even find yourself in a hula hoop-off with a small child (guilty as charged!). After reading 'The Omnivore's Dilemma' by Michael Pollan earlier this year (I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know how the food gets on your table) I have developed a keen interest in buying my food in this way, and it appears so have a lot of other people as these kind of farmer's markets are increasing substantially in popularity. This market is held weekly in the grounds of a local school and has a very good choice of organic vegetables & fish as well as free range meat (chicken, beef, lamb, pork, sausages, bacon). You can also find buffalo mozzarella, fruit juices, cold cuts and yoghurt. The stall holders are very keen to explain how it may have been grown, reared and caught and although it's a little more expensive than your local supermarket the pay-off is taste, quality and ultimately your health.

I didn't think it was much at the time when I lived in South Croydon, but now I really do miss places like this. I miss wandering "down to town" and passing this market and then wandering pass it again on the way home. It was a great place, full of vibrant people, a decent selection of stalls including ones that sold fresh fruit and veg, bags, purses, books, watches, pendants, antiques, flowers, specialty foods and the list goes on. In general, the number of stalls increased during the weekends. As with most outdoor markets, there's potential for haggling if you're into that kind of thing. There's also a lot of trash, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder... keep your eyes peeled for bargains in the summer, such as freshly plucked berries at an amazing price! Towards closing time (around 5:00 pm), there were lots of bargains that could be had: 1 pound for this or 1 pound for that. That is if you can understand the locals, screaming in cockney rhyming slang. There is nearby street parking, but the best bet would be to park near the city centre and walk down. I was lucky enough to live within walking distance of this market.

It's a pleasant change from the stress of the over-subscribed Borough market - full of sample tasting oiks who just crowd the place without buying anything that isn't ready made for fear that they may challenge their plastc world view by actually cooking something with taste and flavour . . . . If you like good quality food, want to know more about where real good food comes from, how and why it is the way it is and how to cook using real ingredients then go to your local farmer's market. With Bermondsey Farmer's Market you will be spoiled for choice.
