We were attracted by the Yelp! reviews. I had my eye on the World Famous Chicken Benedict. It was even better than everyone had said it would be! Our server, Jerrica, was wonderful and helped us choose from among the many appetizers as well as and the entree selections for my wife and myself. It has a very local homey feel in all of the best of ways (i..e., made from scratch, not too kitschy). It was a better experience than we expected, and we had high expectations because of all the great reviews we had read. Please make the time to come on down here. (We were in NPR to kayak ourselves.) Yes, I wrote here because I'm writing this before we have finished dessert. Well, I should say our second dessert. My friend selected Herschel's scratch kitchen because they make everything from scratch. We seated ourselves at a booth, ( please add more cushion to your seats please) they were a bit hard, lumpy and uncomfortable. Our waitress was prompt, but very busy. Our drinks were served right away and refilled when they got low. I ordered the Phili cheesesteak, which was ok. Cut from prime rib, very good. My friend ordered a Rubin, which she said was just ok. The bread was toasted a bit too much and cut her lip. Her sweet potato fries were excellent. My fries were perfectly made. They had a seasoning that gave them that extra umph. Crispy but not too crispy. Our waitress checked on us a few times. It was loud, that was ok. Outside seating was pretty full, empty tables had left over dishes from previous diners so we ate inside. As far as Herschel's scratch kitchen goes, I'd give it 5 stars. But, the parking is horrendous!!!! I had to park 3 blocks away and I'm disabled! The streets are very narrow too. Will I go back? Only if someone drove me. I do recommend you giving Herschel's scratch kitchen a try. Good food, a bit pricy. Good luck finding a parking spot. read more

traveling a lot for work gives me the opportunity to try a variety of different restaurants that aren't a chain, but off the chain. This one was a recommendation that did not disappoint in the heart of Newport Ritchie. It is easy to miss but hard to come by the shrimp and grits had a bunch of flavor and great consistency. This is one of those meals you have to have a Pepsi with even if it's 9 o'clock in the morning. There's outside inside seating. My friend Elaine and I visited herschel's for lunch. She's been going through it so I wanted to make her day better We stopped inside and were seated at the table, my friend was taking her time making up her mind for drinks, and it was clear the waitress did not have time for her frame of mind. She seemed a bit unhappy. While we waited, and wait you will, because it's a scratch kitchen so they make it all by hand. When asking about the wait, the waitress pulled such a face, and was very passive aggressive in her handling of things, she snottily replied " well it is a scratch kitchen." Look, they werent busy, it was an hour before they closed, so i get she wanted to leave but the rest was uncalled for. My friend ordered the mac & cheese and it was absolutely decadent. I got the BIG DADDY'S SOUTHERN REUBEN with Corned beef brisket braised for 6 hours in-house, topped with colestaw. remoulade sauce and swiss cheese melted between marble rye bread. I would highly recommend anyone come here for their exceptionally delicious dishes. I did come on a weekday so it wasn't as busy as the weekends just be prepared on the weekends to have a little bit of a wait, but it is well worth it. The server was polite and efficient. I was never made to feel rushed and was given plenty of time to peruse the menu. They have both outside and inside seating. I sat outside since it was such a beautiful winter day here in Florida. The shrimp and grits are everything that you would expect. I honestly thought that they would garner at least a Michelin star. We arrived at 1:30 and were seated right away. Was hoping for outdoors but the only available seats were in the direct sunlight and since I burn in the moonlight - we opted for inside. We ended up at a table in the middle of the restaurant, directly in the path of a very serious AC vent...so, I was freezing every few minutes. They were busy so I didn't bother asking to move. We ordered the fried green tomatoes as a starter and they were delicious! Hot, crispy, and the remoulade sauce was outstanding!! My only criticism was that they needed a little salt - but that was easily remedied. We ordered the Eugene's fried chicken sandwich and Hazel's grilled chicken sandwich. Both were hot and well presented. They also both benefited from a bit of salt tableside. Headed to New Port Richey for a late lunch and found Herschel's has extended hours now! They were serving from a dinner menu and I ordered the Pork Chop with Marsala sauce. What a delicious meal! And my friend ordered a turkey wrap with the soup of the day - Corn Chowder. His eyes got really big looking up from his first taste of chowder and said "This is REALLY good!" My husband got the fried chicken eggs, Benedict. I tasted it and the fried chicken was amazing. He also got the side of grits which he enjoyed. Got up early and decided to go for breakfast. Looked on Yelp and saw this place was 5 miles away. It was not crowded first thing in the morning so I was able to get seated right away. Ordered water and coffee while I perused the menu. Since this was my first time I decided on the Corned Beef Hash breakfast and also ordered the biscuit and gravy. The wait staff seems nice and efficient. Getting my drink order quickly. The ambiance is quaint. The furniture was dated but clean. My order came as shown in the picture. What can I say about this meal? It was average. Nothing special just your average American breakfast which was filling. Now I probably won't drive here again just to visit this spot but if you are in the area and hungry stop by and have an egg or two. I give it 3 stars. Not bad just not great. read more
