Dr Hershfeld completely dismissed my pain, told me I'm young so I shouldn't have the pain I was experiencing . When I tried to ask him a question he refused to let me finish insisting he already knew the answer. He had 0 sympathy and 0 professionalism. Plz retire you are too old. read more

I decided to go to the Medical Office of Howard Beach because my PCP was not available. Im so glad I did! I was seen fairly quickly by Dr. Alvin Hershfeld and he was super helpful! I had lower back pain and he was very detailed and gave me the necessary next steps. He was so helpful, that I decided to tell him about a few other complications and that was taken care of in house as well. Thank you Dr. Hershfeld for being so informative and providing quick resolutions. It helped tremendously before my trip. Highly recommended. read more

It's unfortunate I have to leave this review because Doctor Hershfeld is a sweetheart. The wait time is terrible but that's not uncommon for walk-in places. He is sweet and helpful. Unfortunately, I have to give the office one star. The other physician here, PA Francis Brickhouse is awful. She is incredibly unprofessional, as is Nurse Patty. The nurse is actually the same woman at the front desk who people complained about in other reviews. Anyway, I've seen PA Brickhouse before and she's always been a little curt BUT my most recent experience with her really put things over the top. Yesterday my mom started feeling very weak. She was concerned that she might have pneumonia. So, knowing she'd maybe need an X-ray, she went to Pro Health Urgent care because they have an X-Ray machine and Dr. Hershfeld's office does not. Urgent Care gave her an X-ray and confirmed that she not only has pneumonia but also has a lung lesion and needs a CAT Scan to find out if she needs to be hospitalized. Urgent care is apparently unable to give prescriptions for CATs, so she went to Dr. Hershfeld's office with a written note explaining she had been diagnosed. Both PA Brickhouse and Nurse Patty were incredibly rude and berated her for going to another office before this one. PA Brickhouse refused to give her a prescription for a CAT Scan, despite the fact that it is urgent and could possibly lead to hospitalization (Luckily she has an appointment with a different doctor, who is happy to see and help her, tomorrow) . PA Brickhouse kept yelling that she couldn't give her the prescription because she "didn't treat her", despite the fact that my mom was physically in the office, asked to be treated/examined, had a note from another office AND paid a co-pay. What do you constitute as "treating" someone, PA Brickhouse? The office does not even have an X-ray machine, they would've had to send her somewhere else regardless. She and Nurse Patty kept yelling and criticizing Urgent Care. It seems as if they have a personal vendetta against the office and are perhaps angry that they are losing business to them. Advice: If you DON'T want to lose business to another office -- maybe don't berate your patients, maybe don't let your own ego get in the way of a patient's health AND safety, and maybe don't close at 3pm on a weekday...I tried to call up to speak to someone and the office was already closed at 3:15 despite the machine saying they closed at 4:30. What a joke. PA Brickhouse put her own ego ahead of a patient's well-being. If you are a medical professional, your job is to help patients to the best of your best ability. You have a responsibility to do the right thing. She was fully aware that delaying the CAT Scan could worsen her condition and delay a potentially crucial hospital visit. If she can't put patients first, she shouldn't be in medicine. If you go to this office, make sure Dr. Hershfeld is in that day and NOT PA Brickhouse! read more

Not worth coming here. I was the second person in line the morning I showed up injured and needing their care. I was literally standing outside behind an older gentleman for the doors to open. Though they indeed took payment from me within the first 10 minutes I was there, and though I was the second name on their "sign-up" sheet --I waited over an HOUR to see, not Dr. Hershfeld, but a nurse who spent a total of ten ambiguous minutes with me. I left with a referral to a specialist and not even an inkling of an idea of what was wrong with me. I noted some things that bothered me somewhat as I sat and waited for much ado about nothing: *The Doctor strolls in 15 mins AFTER his office opens. *The staff behind the front desk never acknowledge patients or looks up at you nor do they smile. They just call your name out like you are cattle (i.e. "pay your co-payment, it's your turn to be seen" or "is that how you spell your last name??!"). *The unfinished" half-walls of plaster and sheetrock" throughout the whole office when a simple coat of paint would do. Not sure why 9 months AFTER Hurricane Sandy, a coat of paint is so tedious. Then again, that kind of lack of attention to details illustrates my point exactly that much of what they do, feels tedious to them. *Despite a "Sign-In" sheet, there seemed to be about 5 persons who came in well after me, but went in ahead of me. *They have signs all over the walls that warn you there will be a longer wait time due to the "processing of medical records from paper to electronic" because they lost everything in Sandy. My question is: Who isn't electronic these days?? Plus, you can't trick me like that; I was there a few times before Sandy and the wait was just as horrendous. Something about those signs seemed in poor taste, as if they were taking a pathetic turn at using Sandy as a crutch (9 months later) to excuse poor service and lack of efficiency. My overall experience from "start to finish" was pretty lousy. I noted a lot of senior citizens in the waiting room the day I was there, as well as young folks who needed simple "health physicals" or "workers comp" cases to be dealt with. As I left, I saw that their waiting room was full to the brim with patients and I'm guessing it remained that way throughout the day. Important to note: They used to have an x-ray machine, but now they do not. For any care you need that requires x-rays, Dr. Hershfeld's office will refer you down the block to another facility that, despite taking "digital" x-rays (READ: IMMEDIATE RESULTS), they too, will have poor follow-up skills concerning your results and will not tell you what they are taking/doing with you and where your results are going when they are done and when you should expect that your Doctor's office (who is down the block!) might call (if at all) to give you the results. All of that aside, Dr. Hershfeld's office was not even aware that the results from my specialist referral had been sitting on their fax machine. My conversation with his office went like this: Me: Hi, did you get my results from South Shore Radiology yet?" Dr. Hershfeld's office/Front Desk: "Did we call you???" Clearly, there is an undertone in that kind of exchange, and part of it is just plain dismissiveness. This was actually was the second time I had called, as the first time, they told ME to call the specialist to remind them to fax the results over. Heavens Forbid they look for them. And I am getting billed for all of this! Knowing that Dr. Hershfeld's office would close (4:00pm) soon, I had no choice but to chase my diagnosis down. In summary, at this establishment it is the patient's responsibility (read: ME) to tell them that your results are sitting on their fax machine, even if they blow you off (read: ME) over the phone every time you call. Wait, no head's up as to the care of my injured body part going forward? How I was to treat myself in the coming weeks / expected recovery?? I requested to speak with an actual medical professional because, while yes, I was injured (and okay, not fatally), it seemed completely inappropriate that the front desk personnel was telling me my results and trying to get me off the phone. I got my information off of GOOGLE as to the care I should follow -not his office. Which is why I say - avoid being in the care of this "Doctor's office" if you can. There are better, more professional medical offices in New York that employ courteous and knowledgeable staff to take care of their patients. Go THERE instead! When I think about the whole day I wasted dealing with them from the early morning until just before they closed, I was wishing I just took myself to the ER as the poor service here only added insult to my already painful injury. read more

please don't waste your time with this place, this would be my third and final visit to this place. there all about getting there co-pays from you each and every time you visit even if its a return visit. and forget about talking to the doctor on the phone he doesn't do that you need to go in pay your money for him to tell you whats wrong. so i went in on a monday complaining of a pain in my elbow that had a lump as if filled with water he gave me a prescription and sent me down the block for an x-ray and told me he would drain my elbow when he gets the results back so tues i get a call telling me my x-rays are fine so i asked to speak to the doctor and they refused told me he doesn't speak to patients over the phone that i would need to come in so i did that same day. as soon as i walk in there asking me for a co-pay and im like this is a follow up visit im not paying again. so doctor refused to talk to me and instead i was given a referral to an orthopedic. so as it stands today 7/12/2016 i still dont know whats wrong with my arm and i have to search for a new doctor and pay some more because of this mans greed (not sure what else to call it) George read more

I went to see Dr. Hershfeld today. It was my 1st. The wait time was minimal about 25 min. He takes his time with his patients and answered all my questions. He very knowledgeable. His staff was very attentive and respectful. The office is very professional. I will be back again. No appointment was necessary. I was a walk in. Stay away from this office !!!! I never got to meet the doctor but if he hires such unprofessional people to work his front desk then truthfully I don't want to meet him ... I never leave any type of reviews but after today's experience I just have to WARN you. After I filled out the paper work and hand it to the heavy set front desk lady she at first politely yet very loudly asked about my phone number saying it out loud so that all these people that sat there could hear it apologizing though commenting she must be having a bad day ... Then she started to do the same thing with my address... I walked up to the window and asked her if she'd like me to write everything down again ? She wouldn't stop yelling out my personal information and completely ignored my question ... I was completely freaked out by her behavior ...I became worried she'll start yelling out my social security number as well. Therefor I told her that I no longer want to see this doctor and that she had herself to thank for it. They lost a new patient. .. This lady went insane on me ... She yelled at me that in America they don't fill out the paper work with thesloppy handwriting...I think she was referring to my accent I still have it although I spend most of my life here in the USA. And the 30 years I live here I must say I never came across such unprofessional front desk staff in a medical office ... I asked her to give me back the paperwork I filled out. Obviously I didn't want to leave my information behind . She then said she'd shred it and so she did right in front of me at the same time the other girl kept yelling "GET OUT !" To me. And the heavy set lady commented that I must have some kind of problem and that's why I reacted that way ! Yes I do have a problem with you disclosing my personal information to strangers lady... I went to Dr. Hershfeld for years! I thought he was knowledgeable and he does take his time with patients--the downside is you wait for hours! I went there for results from tests that they refuse to give you over the phone regardless of good or bad so they can charge another office visit. The staff is rude and unprofessional and incompetent, especially "nurse" Pat! When I mildly started to voice my displeasure with the wait time (2 and 1/2 hrs), Dr. Hershfeld went ballistic! I couldn't believe my ears! He told me that 3 of his "nurses" (there is not even 1 real nurse on staff) told him I was rude. and came in complaining about having to wait. He flung my test results down and said he wasn't going to see me! He said, "I don't need this, I've been up since 6am!" As I followed him out of the room, I said "I've been up since 5am!" and he turned around and shoved me in front of another patient! The only reason he agreed to then speak to me was because I said I would call the police. He and his staff refused to give me my records which by law I am entitled to and told me not to return! As if I needed to be told to stay away! He called me a fool! I told him his behavior was very unprofessional and disgraceful!
