They try very hard to look like a used car dealer but after you go a couple of steps into buying a used car you realize you are dealing with not experienced sales and financial staffing. Luckily, I have my mechanic inspected the car and they took care of my car problem. Will contact sale manager to complain the oil leaking issue on that car! I had a terrible experience with the Smithtown Hertz Rent-to-Buy program. I recently picked out a car that I was very excited to test drive and potentially buy. I scheduled my 3-day test drive a week in advance. The day prior to the pick-up date, I called to confirm the reservation and was told the car had not yet been returned (let alone cleaned/inspected). Hertz provide no estimate on when the car would arrive, but told me they would reach out when it was ready. I continued to call Hertz twice a day for the next 3 days to check on the status of the car. Each time I called the representative provided absolutely no information about when the car would be ready. It has now been 11 days since my test drive was scheduled to begin and I have yet to receive a single phone call or e-mail to update me on the status of the car. Keep in mind, this is all occurring while they have a deposit out against my credit card. This has been a 0 out of 10 customer service experience and I would highly recommend that you look elsewhere for you car buying needs (as I was forced to do). read more

I was given the key to another car, went to look at it while the salesman said he's going to the bathroom and will be right back. Many people are skeptical of used rentals, but there are also many positive experiences online. Everyone online recommends to get an outside pre-purchase inspection first, but Smithtown Hertz didn't allow me to do this. It would have been reassuring to at least see the checklist from the Certified inspection, and to get a copy of maintenance records of the car. Finding out that the inspection was done by Pep Boys (and not just an internal rubberstamp) was somewhat reassuring. Joe was friendly and honest. Absolutely zero pressure or haggling, which was the primary reason for going here. They said they're just selling old stock of cars and make no profit which makes sense. They were pretty busy and I had to choose if I was going to buy it quickly because other people wanted it as it was the only one in that color. The loan guy was a little pushy with the extended warranties and wanted to speed through everything without reading it, etc. Website says "Hertz gives you a 5day/5,000 mile customer satisfaction policy with every car." but the Smithtown location said that's not true? I am very pleased with the used car buying experience at Hertz Smithtown. I have not bought a used car in decades but due to the current car prices I had to go for a used one. I visited few conventional used car dealerships before going to Hertz - that was a nightmare, like going back to 1990 in the time machine. These conventional dealers lie with impunity, pressure into buying, attempt to charge the buyer for things like "etching" (kid you not, charge for etching - I thought that was a thing from 1980s.....). So, compared to conventional used car dealerships, the Hertz experience was a breeze. While Hertz salespeople may seem disinterested - hey, I'll choose their indifference over the conventional salesperson's pressure any day. Hertz salespeople even provide wrong info sometimes - I was told that "Hertz is NOT self-insured". Of course, there was a card in the glove compartment stating otherwise and a simple google search showed that too. Still, in the current market situation, I'd rather buy a used car from Hertz.... Hertz gives 12,000 miles limited warranty from an established provider, I already confirmed with my local dealership that they accept it. The price I paid at Hertz was exactly the price advertised on the website + $12 for some tire thing. For people who hate haggling like me - Hertz is the way to go. read more

Went in for a vehicle Saturday with full intentions on making a purchase... I drove from westchester to Smithtown with 8k ready and before the place opened. I was helped by a man named John. I immediately told him to start the process for financing the vehicle, I was told by his manager I was approved but I need to submit documents from my insurance company to proceed with the purchase. He stated "go get the paperwork and the car is yours!". I left to called my insurance and they emailed me the documents a hour later. I received a call from John 2 hours afterwards stating I'm sorry the car is sold. Same day. 2.5 hours afterwards. I was in shock and hurt because they ran my credit just to play games with the selling of the vehicle. They were eager to sell to just anybody even though I was there first, ready to purchase and definitely sneaky about the deal. They sold me a lie instead and ran my credit across multiple banks for nothing. I previously purchased a vehicle a few years back at Hertz Rockville center and had a present experience so I returned. It's crazy they would treat a returning client this way. Luckily I found the car elsewhere at a better rate with better customer service. I have brought them business before but I won't be returning. If you have no interest in selling to someone DONT RUN THEIR CREDIT. Plus I find it hard to believe they sold it in a hour. There were only 3 customers in the dealership when I was there. I honestly believe they perceived me as the black girl in sweats and sneakers who couldn't possibly purchase a Lexus. Save yourself the headache and your credit score by going elsewhere! read more

I cannot say enough nice things Hertz Car Sales in Smithtown, and my salesman Sean. Everyone I spoke with was friendly, helpful, knowledgeable, and straightforward. I am very impressed by the way Hertz sells cars. I went to three other dealers (2 new car & 1 used car dealer). The other three showed me cars that cost well over book value, and/or were well above my stated budget (for total cost and monthly payment), and the two new car dealers were telling me that my credit was not as good as I knew it to be and offered loans with rates well above what I should have been eligible for. Pros: Everything is clearly explained. 12 month/12,000 mile warranty. The car I was buying had 30,000 miles left on the Ford warranty so this was no benefit for me, but if I was buying a car that was near or over the original factory warranty this would've given me a lot of piece of mind. Fairly priced "no-hassle" prices clearly displayed. No multiple prices or "you must have a printed copy of the internet ad to get the internet price". The price you see on the internet is the same price you see on the lot. The car I purchased from them was a 2017 Fusion Hybrid with 8,700 miles priced $1,700 below KBB book value. It was $3,000 less than a 2015 Fusion Hybrid "demo" with 6,000 miles at a local Ford Dealer. No high pressure sales pitch. Questions were answered in a way that I better understood things as opposed to being more confused or remotely feeling that my questions were being disingenuously answered. Reasonably priced extended warranty plan. Most plans offered at dealers are $2,000+ and have significant limitations. Consumer Reports judges their value at about $800. After a little haggling they reduced the cost to about $1,200 which I fell was reasonable & purchased it. No trying to sell of ridiculous things like rust protection, glass etching, fabric protection, a waiver of the loan balance in an apocalypse, etc. Loan was processed through a large well known bank. The rate was a little higher than I might have gotten on my own, but was reasonably in the ballpark of where I thought it should be and worth the convenience. Cons: They do not accept cash, or credit cards for any part of the down payment. I wanted to pay as much of the down payment as I could with a credit card that has a great points program. Considering what I've written above this is a very minor issue. Sorry for the length of this, but Hertz gave me the best experience I ever had buying a new or used car and they deserved detailed praise. read more

Con artist. The word "scam" doesn't really feel strong enough to describe my impression of this business. I came in with the intention to buy a used car. Before my girlfriend and I could even walk around the parking lot, we were greeted by a salesmen l, who gave us the whole song and dance. He explained that these are the cars that Hertz was relieving from their fleet. So, whatever the price, given from corporate, was the price. They make the make a uniform fee for each car. So, the incentive is to get the client into a car they want. No up-selling. Honestly, things were going pretty well. My girlfriend and I found a car we both agreed was reasonably priced. So, we leave to get a certified check from our bank. Then, when we come back to fill out the paperwork, our salesmen tried to slip in the fact that the car was actually 1000 dollars more than we agreed on. He apparently made a "mistake" and the price we agreed on was the price of the car last week. If there was a regulated fee from corporate, why would the prices change week to week? We were both completely blindsided by this clear money grab. We asked to see a manager, to explain our situation, and why we were upset. The ghoulish looking manger (who looks like he invented the Ponzi scheme) came out and was even more closed minded than our salesperson. We walked out of this trap. But, I truly hope no honest people fall for this place. read more

Bought a 2020 GMC Terrain from Hertz in Smithtown, NY in August of 2022. Salesman sold me on buying a Certified Pre Owned over a non certified vehicle because he assured me that the certified vehicle were thoroughly checked and I was told that any parts on the vehicle that were more then 50% worn would be replaced as part of the process. After only 4 months and less then 4000 miles put on the vehicle and it I am having to replace the brakes and I am out of pocket $800. The manager Sean tried to tell me that it is normal to have to replace breaks after only 4000 miles and it is considered normal wear and tear and they refused to cover the cost. read more

The only positive thing I can say about this place, is that the cars are priced reasonably. HOWEVER... the customer service is AWFUL! I have never experienced such inconsiderate and lackluster service. The sales representative that I worked with was completely , incompetent, inconsiderate, lazy and uneducated. He withheld important information, and did so without any remorse or care. The manager showed no interest in helping out the situation and frankly neither of them seemed to remotely care. I closed the deal with another representative, but I would not recommend this place to anyone looking for a car. The absolute worst car buying experience in my life.. The temp plates and registration expired on April 6, I took the car home March 6.. Temp plates in NY cannot be extended, I still don't have plates or registration it's now May 2 and I am receiving no updates from this company. Once they have your money they do not care about resolving any issues that are still tied to them. Their excuse is that they use a third party for plates and registration but you hired them to do so. I can't legally drive this vehicle because I have no active registration or plates, I can't use it personally or for business purposes. I have lost weeks of revenue because of this and Hertz only offers apologies and no solutions. They also told me that they will pay for any tickets I receive but why would I want to deal with tickets and incidents with the police? Because of your negligence? This is not the way to do business. I am contacting the Better Business Bureau, local media outlets and consulting our family lawyer to review our options. This service or lack there of I received from is unacceptable. read more

Extremely Disappointed First and foremost we absolutely love our car. Hertz Auto Sales in Smithtown came to us as a recommendation by a friend who purchased his vehicle there. The service we received while at your dealership was exceptional. Jeremy worked extremely had to get us the vehicle we wanted and well with the car no complaints to date. Though the experience with your dealership was a great one...regrettably the follow up has been horrendous. When we purchased the car on 03/16/2019, Jeremy, told us that the car came with a second key and that it would be sent over night to our home when ready. A couple of weeks passed by and nothing. I called Jeremy who was busy at the time so left a message. No call back. A week later I emailed Jeremy, no response. Emailed again a few days later...no response. Called again, spoke to a nice young man, who again said Jeremy was busy and left another message. AGAIN NO CALL BACK. Called back a week later, spoke to the same gentleman, and this time asked to speak to the manager. He placed me on hold and then came back on the line to ask what I was calling about. After explaining the reason for my call he said he would look into it and that someone would return my call . NO Jeremy, NO Manager, NO call back. Called back again the following week and the same gentleman placed me on hold yet again, to tell me that the key had already been sent, but gave me no details, tracking number, dates, nothing. This was supposed to be "overnight-ed" remember? NOTHING. Called the following week and the same young man... this time he says they are not sure what happened and that they would need to track it and call me back. Guess what....NO CALL BACK. Now I'm really pissed. Tuesday, 5/21 - Called AGAIN and FINALLY got JEREMY (ONLY because he answered) and all he could say was heeey Veronica, yea we dont know what happened to that dang key, so I'm going to have to send out a guy to make the key for you. He can go to your house or work. He will be there Thursday. Where do you prefer? Work. Great! Ill send him over Thursday. He will call you to make arrangements. It is now Friday, 6/7 and still NO Common Courtesy, NO Apologies, NO Call and NO KEY. I can't begin to tell you how extremely frustrating this has all been. I am a Supervisor and I fix problems and handle complaints daily. I pride myself on my customer service skills. I try to resolve issues as quickly as possible to avoid patients being unhappy with our services. I can not understand why its been so difficult for Jeremy or Hertz Management to accept responsibility for their lack of professionalism and just resolve the issue! I rent cars weekly for work and have been using enterprise but hertz was a little cheaper (so I thought) and closer to work so I figured why not give them a try. Worst mistake ever. Rented a car for less then $60 a day. Got it and the rep never told me that it had 2 burn holes in the seat so I wasted time going back inside. Marked it as a full tank which it wasn't. I returned it as a full tank. Still not a bug deal. I'm understanding. I had to extend it and their receipts as well as the addl hold on my credit card showed the same price as the rental. When I return it and check my receipt later they jumped the price to $85 a day and when I called and spoke w Andrew he said it's because I extended the rental and they change the price. That would be a great thing to know before you rent a car. You made it out to be that it's all good and the same price then at then end say it's over $25 more a day?? Really. So I laid $85 a day for a Corolla with 2 burn holes in the seat. Can't even find a way to get in touch with their corporate office to complain so maybe that's why they do this. This place has terrible service. The cars are reasonably priced but that is where the positives end. I agreed to purchase a car from their stock and this is where the disaster began. The sales rep I felt like was rushing the process. I was told that this place didn't have an debit or credit card option to leave a down payment to hold the car. Everything had to be paid via personal check. It was a holiday so the banks were closed so there was nothing I could do. He told me to ask a friend to spot me money or finance the entire vehicle right then and there. I refused to do either and he then told me the car I was interested in wouldn't be there later in the week when I was able to go to the bank and get a check. The vehicle was on the lot for 2 weeks so I doubt it was going anywhere. He then scheduled a later meeting with me.I recieved a phone call midway in the week confirming my time for the appointment and the salesperson didn't know the time we agree upon. How can I expect a salesperson to walk me through the purchasing process if they can't get that little detail correct. In conclusion, if I was a thirsty man in the desert and Hertz Smithtown was the only place selling water. I wouldn't even go there. I ended up going to Hertz in Rockville Centre and closed on a deal there. A much better experience. read more

I bought a car from Smithtown dealership in 2017, and it is the absolute worst car I ever purchased. The car has been breaking down systematically since I purchased it. The car has been in the shop virtually on a monthly basis. Everything started to break down, from replacing the distributor cap (it was cracked) to replacing computer parts from day one... After the warranty expired, the turbo went on the car and the engine subsequently seized. No one knows why, since we had just had the oil changed (did so regularly) the week before. As a consequence, I decided to put in a second engine. After all, the car is a 2015 model. Its only 3 years old. It shouldn't be having these problems. I was wrong... The car still experienced problems continually. Problems that could not be from driver abuse. It just kept breaking down. Last month, the car overheated so badly that I had to have it towed to my auto mechanic. Apparently the cooling fan malfunctioned, the heat gauge stopped working because of the computer, the heater stopped working (same issue), and as a result the car overheated so badly that it cracked the head. Unfortunately, now I am being told that the rebuilt engine I put on the car also needs to be replaced. I have literally put over $8000 worth of repairs into this car since I purchased it, and now I'm stuck with a $8000 car loan (the car is a Chevy cruze 2015). I'm a furious over this. An absolute lemon from the day I took it off of the lot (had to replace the brakes a week later). I am just letting you know because I am going to be posting this on social media. People should be aware that the cars they sell need to be fully checked out by an independent auto shop before purchase. I purchased the vehicle for $12,000. I've put in over $8000 of repairs into the car, and still have a $8000 balance on the car loan. I couldn't be more disappointed. PS..
