Hertz customer service is incompetent. They are incapable of generating a receipt that shows how much was paid and refunded on a car rental transaction. I returned the car early and received a very partial reimbursement. At least 10 email transactions with customer service proved worthless. Made reservations in March for a vehicle at Hertz. Went to pick up the vehicle at the reserved date and time only to find out that they don't have the vehicle there yet, someone was to return it by noon. It's 9am. They suggested i call "customer service" to see about picking up the vehicle at a different location. That rep, wish i got his name, said that i could get it from the airport, 30 minutes away, for the same price. He said i had 24 hours to pick up the vehicle and at that point if not picked, my reservation would be lost. I go straight there because i need to get on the road, at this point, I'm already behind my planned schedule. I get to the airport, they can't find that my reservation was changed to their location and they can't book another reservation under my name since i still had one at the original location AND they don't even have the vehicle i needed. I called customer service back and spoke with Nina, i explained everything to her, she placed me on hold saying Northridge has the vehicle. I asked her how am i to trust that, that's the case, yall just sent me on a wild goose chase, so i asked her to call them and confirm. She said they aren't allowed to do that and that she could make the reservation for me. I requested her sup cuz ain't no way in hell yall can't contact them and verify they have the vehicle, yall just told me to come to the airport and it's not here. She puts me on hold and comes back saying her sup authorized her to call them, she called and they do have the vehicle and the price is now $100+ more. Girllllllllll bye, yall got me running around like crazy when i did what i was supposed to do. Requeted her sup, blah blah blah my sup will say the same, ok, give me the sup. I speak with Tim #1425316, allegedly, says he can't change the price. I requested his sup, he doesn't have one. He just places me on "hold" no music no nothing so i already know this dude just muted the dang phone. He gets back on talking about thanks for holding, pissing me off even more cuz no he didn't have me on hold, you muted the phone. He says his sup isn't taking calls and to try again in 30 minutes. At this point, I've been on the phone with yall 1 hour, i can and will hold for that sup. He says i can't and hangs up..... Where the F is the customer service? Why are we continuing to outsource these companies. Where's the compensation for NOT holding up to your end of the contract? Oh but God forbid i cancel on yall at the last minute. Stay away from Hertz! I returned a fully fueled, undamaged and very clean vehicle on the mutually agreed upon date/time. In the days that followed, Hertz put on my credit card charges amounting to over $1100. I was fraudulently charged for replacement for a windshield $500, a cleaning fee of $500 and fuel charges. I then received an additional bill of $825 for repairs! After admitting there was no incident, they agreed to refund my credit card $1000. They only refunded $261 and then said case closed. My case is not unique, a search of Hertz fraud showed a great deal of these cases. They are dishonest and unscrupulous. Shame I have to give them even 1 star. read more

After returning the car, I got texts and emails saying there was new damage and that I would have to pay for the repair. They included "before" and "after" photos, and there was no difference! I was not in any accidents, and can see no damage in the photos! I spent hours navigating their automated phone system trying to get someone on the line to discuss this with. When I finally got a live person, she said to reply to their email -- which I did. Apparently, no one at Hertz reads their emails because I am still getting emails and texts saying there is damage and if I don't pay, there will be penalty fines. This is just infuriating and a huge waste of my time. read more

What a scam and a money grab!! I declined the insurance and the pre-paid gas when I picked up the car in Orlando, FL. I returned the car completely full of gas. Not only was I charged $175 Fuel & Service, but they also added Concession Fee Recovery $55.70, Vehicle License Fee $11.41, Customer Facility Charge $63, and two types of taxes. I contacted HQ and they asked for proof that gas was purchased. To add insult to injury, I received a separate charge in the amount of $14.03 for a toll that was $1.25. The booth was unmanned, so I took an envelope and mailed a check per instructions. I am still fighting to be reimbursed the fuel and toll charges - complete FRAUD! I want to bring attention to my experience with renting a car at the Placentia, California office and our unfortunate series of events. 3 years ago, I rented a car OW for pickup 5/26/21 in order to drive to Orange County airport the following day. Rather than giving us the car we rented, the manager offered us a 12-seater van instead saying she needed it to be delivered to SNA. She sweetened the deal by offering us w/ free gas. With that win-win proposition at that time, we agreed. We returned the van on May 27 early morning at the airport with no problems or notices from the return staff. A couple of months later, I received a voicemail from Hertz stating the vehicle we returned had damage to which I responded that it would not concern me because I had returned it at SNA a couple of days without any damage. From that point on, no further notices were received by us from Hertz so we considered the incident closed and just a snafu on the part of Hertz. However, on November 4, 2021 I received a collection letter from JNR Adjustment Company, Inc. for $18,365! I immediately sent a response letter asking for any documents that prove what the damages were and evidence that I was responsible for them. No response was received so again we concluded that the matter was resolved. Fast forward 3 years to May 7, 2024 and, despite the debt being old and believed to be previously resolved, we recently got a letter from another law firm/collection agency for Hertz, that says I owe the same amount of $18,365. We are flabbergasted of this unrelenting attempt at getting us to pay for purported damages that we were never previously presented with evidence showing how we were responsible. This simply demonstrates the lack of due process by Hertz. We have contacted Hertz Customer Service and to make it short, rather than apologizing for the fiasco and the mental anquish we endured for 3 years, all they offered was 4750 points worth about a weeks rental. I replied that the compensation was not good enough and all I got was...... silence. Take it or leave it, I presume. Could you imagine, 1 week free rental equivalent to 3 years of emotional distress dealing with collection agencies? They certainly pay more to Tom Brady in their recent rush of ads than their actual customers! read more

YELP, I wrote the following letter to the Hertz Corporation on September 8, 2021, to which I received an automatic email response saying that I will receive a personal response within 7-10 business days. I received no response, but I have written 6 emails, including two to the president of the company for the last 4 months. I was dissatisfied with the car rental experience and I am more dissatisfied with the lack of respect and common courtesy from the Hertz Corporation. I will never use the company again. To Whom It May Concern, I am writing this email to express my dissatisfaction with our recent Thrifty car rental experience and ask for monetary compensation. The Rental Record number is 142*******6 (rented in Philadelphia 8/20; returned to Reagan National 9/3). We have six major complaints regarding this rental: 1. Upon arrival in Philadelphia we were transported to the Thirty car rental center and greeted with a line of customers snaking out of the office and making several turns in the parking lot. My wife stood in line for 2 hours and 30 minutes to finally rent our car. The desk frequently had only one person helping customers at a time (at best, there was a maximum of two staff). Needless to say, this did not start our vacation out on a good foot. 2. The car we rented in Philadelphia had a problem with its air conditioner on the fifth day of the rental. It delivered warm air to the interior of the car, despite the controls being in the proper positions (at the time the heat index was 105 degrees). 3. We called the service number to complain about the situation and get a replacement car. That phone call took 1 hour and 45 minutes to complete and we were told that we needed to call the rental car office in Bethesda, MD to ascertain whether they had cars available to exchange (the office turned out to be a Hertz facility), after another 50 minutes on the phone with a different agent we were told that we needed to exchange the car at Reagan National Airport. We wanted to avoid the traffic associated with the airport. 4. The car was exchanged and after we were on the road in southern Virginia, found out the driver seated could not be adjusted. This added to our frustration and discomfort with the car. 5. Although we only had one driver, me, I wanted my wife to hold a key, in case I misplaced my key. The car we were given came with only one key. (Three day we found a second key left in the glove box - this raises a number of safety issues). 6. During our drive back to the Washington, DC area we experienced several rain showers associated with Tropical Storm Ida. I turned the wipers on and found that the driver-side wiper was in disrepair and did not clear the windshield efficiently to continue driving. I needed to stop several times for the showers to slow so we could safely continue our drive. For the time wasted in-line getting for our car initially, the inconveniences associated with the car exchange and the comfort and safety lacking in the exchanged car, I am requesting monetary compensation of $400. This entire car rental experience ruined our vacation. I expect to hear back from you regarding my list of complaints and request for monetary compensation. We live in the U.S. but rented from Hertz (for the first time) online for pick-up and return in Austria. At pick-up we were given the option of buying expensive insurance or making a huge (2000 euros) security deposit (even though our own insurance covers car rentals, and we've not been required to do the like by any other rental company in the U.S. or Europe). This was required if we wanted the car, and it was not mentioned in our reservation. Rather than risk losing the deposit, we paid $500 more than our "confirmed" price. An associate at Hertz Corporate Customer Relations offered this explanation: "I would like also just to clarify with rentals in Austria, as this is a franchisee location, Hertz Austria set out their own policies and procedures which we have no control over." Good to know that sites are free to set their own policies and procedures, as it is reason enough not to trust the name or rent from the company again. read more
