I have rented from Hertz at the Brussels airport twice now and each time it was through rentalcars.com. The service at the counter is always professional and courteous. After you fill out the paperwork (it does take some time and is not as automated as some places), you then get your keys and head upstairs with your luggage to the park garage. The cars are then parked in their appropriate spots. Last year I had trouble with the reverse button and gear and the parking attendant was very helpful in teaching me how to reverse my Ford Focus station wagon. This year we had to return the car before the office opened at 5am and we were able to leave the car with a full tank of gas and drop the keys in the box outside of the office. When I asked for my final invoice with the airport fee and license fee and tax, the gentlemen that emailed me back when through each step on how to pull an invoice from hertz.com. Each time I have contact with this office they are super helpful and go above and beyond to help you. I will rent from them again and have had great experiences each trip. read more

I wish I could go with zero stars for this review, because this was the worst experience I've ever had with a rental car company. I picked up the vehicle with a business associate sometime in the early morning of May 2013. After walking around to look for damage in their damp and dark garage, we thought everything looked good. It was a typical rental car with the normal wear & tear on it -- nothing big. After returning it a few days later, the attendant told me we put a scratch on the bumper and I'd have to pay for it. I told the guy to show me the scratch, and he pointed to the front bumper. I was standing about three feet from the front of the car and didn't see anything. He insisted that I get closer to see it, and it finally appeared to me after I got down on my knee and put my face about 12 inches from the bumper. I told him he had to be kidding, but all of a sudden he forgot how to speak English. After speaking to the manager I realized I was going nowhere, and in my opinion they were running a scam. At this point all I wanted to do was catch my flight home. It didn't take long to see the 600Euro charge show up on my corporate credit card. Thankfully the insurance on my corporate visa paid for this mess, but the paperwork took several days and emails to clear up. I've been back a couple of times since this incident, and booked through the National Rental Car website -- They were great. If you need a rental car in Brussels, do yourself a favor and stay away from Hertz! read more

I've rented at Zaventem for the last few years exclusively with Hertz but it appears that I need to look for a different company next time. Service has always been professional and courteous, much better than at Amsterdam Schiphol, but things have changed. This year I rented a car on January 16 flying in from London in the early evening. On my way to Holland to visit family, I left Belgium just after 9pm on the 16th and didn't return until the 22nd to fly out again. Compare rental car prices between A'dam and Brussels and you'll see why Brussels is less expensive. Upon my return in Denver, I got an additional charge for an "administrative fee" and a letter in the mail saying I was caught speeding in Belgium on the 17th (just a street, no city was mentioned) and Hertz charged me for providing my contact information to the authorities in Belgium. When I alerted them to the fact that I couldn't possibly have been in Belgium on the 17th, that I had only driven on highways in Belgium, not streets, and that since Europe is one large speed trap anyway I clearly was going to be careful not to speed, they insisted that the car had been spotted in Belgium on the 17th and I had to pay. Google this practice and you'll find that this kind of racket started in Italy a few years ago with parking tickets and has apparently made its way north. To their credit, the car they gave me was pretty decent for the price. Upon return their printer didn't work so I had to wait longer to get a receipt. They suggested they'd email it to me but I wasn't going to fall for that. I made them write down that there was no damage to the car because they tossed my copy of the damage report in the trash rather than giving it back to me after inspection. Problem? Service and the fact that the 2 rentals we did with hertz resulted in overcharges for preexisting damage. Cars were handed in with minimum usage and in the exact same conditions (one of them was picked up in the morning and returned that same evening, the other was kept for 2 nights). I was worried because of the bad reviews, but my experience with them was great! When we got there we realized our luggage would not fit in the car we rented. They gave us a slightly larger car at no additional cost. I drove all over Europe, including the UK. We put tons of miles and dirt on the car, but no scratches. Checkout was literally 2 min! The attendant came out of the office, walked around the car, checked the gas, and gave me my receipt. Make sure before you leave with the car that they go around it with you to check for scratches. That way you're not blamed for any you didn't do. I would recommend this place! read more

This was the worst Hertz experience I had. Not only was the price for the rental $300 more than other rental companies for the same vehicle (I had originally reserved with another rental company), but the person at the counter continued to give me false information in addition to a stripped down car with no automatic anything. She mentioned that this car would need Diesel fuel - which it did not, which would have been a disaster if I had not double checked with other personnel. She also mentioned that since this was a last minute reservation, my membership would not count. It continues with a speeding ticket and Hertz charging me 35 Euro to give my name to the authorities - really???? This was more than the ticket itself. All around a very disappointing experience for a company I have rented many times from before. read more

Exceptionally dishonest staff at this location. as others have noted, the staff are running a damage scam. I returned a car without damage, the car was accepted without damage. I later received an "updated" receipt with a 500 euro charge for damage. I called and disputed it with the manager who refused to provide me with photos of the damage yet said he would reverse the charge. I was provided with an invoice with the charge removed yet one month later I have been hit with the 500 euro charge on my credit card. I am a Presidents Circle member and rent cars dozens of times a year. I have never met such crooked people anywhere else in the Hertz system. I've rented a car with hertz in Sevilla, and this was a real bad experience. It started when we got the car. We had a discount on the site booking. We had the second driver for free, at the reception they said this wasn't true. It would be €113, they do not take into account discounts from booking. After I said this wasn't fair and I would fill in a complaint form we finally got our discount. When we brought our car back (with a full tank), they asked for a ticked from the gasstation. They didn't told us to keep this ticket, so we didn't. They told us we had to pay for gas, as you know they charge a lot for the gas! So again, I was frustrated and went to the reception. Explained my problem, at first they didn't really listen. They told us they weren't charging anything extra for the gas. But they wouldn't put this in writing. I didn't trust them, so I complained on twitter. At first they wouldn't helpt me, because the reservation was with (And had a booking client number instead of one of them). Then they gave me e-mail off the spaninsh office. Last but not least they now charge me with an extra fee for dropping of the car at the downtow office instead of the airport while I did pick up and dropped of the car at the airport read more

I am a Hertz Gold Customer and have been since Hertz started this program. I have rented from dozens of Hertz locations. I have never been treated like we were in Brussels. We upgraded to a larger car, which is normally a no charge upgrade, but we were charged for it in Brussels. The anticipated bill of $395.00 ended up being over $1,100. We returned the car on July 4th and were informed that we would be charged for nearly $600 in damages. They cited two small scratches which they claimed were not on the car when we picked it up. We stored the car in a private single car garage while we had it so I am certain we did not incur these scratches. There were several other scratches similar to the two we were charged for on the car. We had to make our flight so I paid the bill including these charges. I took this through the Hertz "customer service" escalation process only to be told the charges were valid. I explained that we had no opportunity to walk around the car and note any damage to the car when we picked it up. They felt we should NOT have trusted Hertz to do the right thing and taken the initiative to force a Hertz employee to walk around the car with us prior to the rental. Hello National, read more

I recently had a horrific experience with Hertz at Zaventem-Brussels Airport. I booked a rental car with them through rentalcars.com and received a quote for a decent rate. I arrived at the rental counter on the morning of December 6, 2013 and received good customer service from the agent and proceeded to my car with which I experienced no problems. On the evening before my departure, I filled the gas tank at a service station so as to not have to deal with filling the tank in the morning. I was very careful throughout the 10 days of my stay and at no time was the car parked in any parking lots where it could have received damage. On the morning of the December 16th, I pulled into the Hertz check out area to return the car. While I was unloading my baggage and miscellaneous items from the vehicle, the check-in guy was walking around the car inspecting for damage. To my surprise, he approached me at the rear of the car and told me that I had damage to the vehicle. He showed me two miniscule superficial scratches, one on the left front hood of the car and one just to the rear of the gas tank fill door on the right rear of the vehicle. Having just filled the tank the evening before, I am certain that the scratch was not there then. Also, the car was quite dirty and these scratches looked very clean and new. I am convinced that this attendant purposely caused these scratches in order to obtain more money from me. He brought me into the check-out office to do the paperwork. The customer service guy there told me that they would be charging me 548Euros plus a damage admin fee of 50Euros for the damage. I told him that I felt that was extreme and he replied that he could have charged me 548Euros for each scratch and that I was getting off easy. I feel that this is a scam being done by Hertz Brussels Airport in order to boost their numbers on the backs of foreign visitors who are subsequently leaving the country. I have registered a complaint with Hertz and I have ordered my credit card company to dispute the charges. I would not recommend renting from Hertz Brussels airport regardless of the low fee quoted. I am hoping by writing this that I will prevent any other unsuspecting traveler from going through this nightmare. If you do rent from Hertz at Brussels airport, be sure to circle the car with the attendant while he inspects the car for damages or you could find yourself in the same boat as me. In addition, I rented a car from Europcar last year and had no issues whatsoever. Stick with them if you need to rent a car in Brussels. read more

I had this happen late late year and they are still harassing me to pay them money I do not in any way owe them. I had the same issue with this rental car site! When I returned the car they stated that I made scratches at the bottom of the driver side door, which I did not. They charged me 800 Euro for non-significant scratches. They also later charged my credit card 50.00 to send my address to the authorities due to a supposed speeding ticket. I disputed everything with my credit card company where I won. However, I did pay them more for the rental car than originally stated on the internet (hoping that this would appease them). But no they are still sending me invoices in the mail hoping I will pay them for damage I did not do. Do not use this rental car company!!! They look cheaper on the internet, but this is because they are scammers!! Stay away! read more

My wife and I were very excited about our first trip to Belgium together. We started our journey with Dollar (operated by Hertz at the Brussels airport). The reason I'm giving them 2-star rating is because of their customer service later in our trip - which I will explain. Bernard H was a great customer service representative. He checked us in, got us our car, was very excited about our trip for us and gave us even too much information about Belgium. So he was fantastic. The car itself was great - no problems. On our last night in Brussels, we got a flat tire at 7 PM on our way back to our hotel. Now everything in Brussels closes at 7 PM. And our USA mobile service does not work in Belgium. So we called Hertz after borrowing a passer-by's phone. Bernard said he'd send out a service truck for us. After waiting an hour, I called again and spoke to Tim. Tim refused to put me on the phone with Bernard who was assisting a customer. When I said that we were waiting for emergency service and Bernard was our contact and we needed information, Tim again rudely refused to connect us. I called back 15 minutes later. Again, Tim refused to connect us to Bernard and Tim could give us no information himself. I called the automated emergency line to check on the status and the options given to me were in either Dutch or French. No English. So now after an hour and a half of waiting and having to borrow very nice strangers' cellphones to call Hertz, the tow-truck finally arrived. So although I'd recommend this company for their rental and their car cleanliness, when the time came for actual real help that was needed, when my wife and I were stuck on the side of the road in a foreign country with no cell-phone - they horrifically did NOT come through. read more

They are definitely running a scam at this location, where if you don't book their insurance at the counter, they will charge you for various "scratches" that they will inevitably find on your car after return. I honestly couldn't even see the scratch the guy pointed out to me. Also, he spoke fluent English when pointing out the supposed scratch, but suddenly couldn't speak a word after I told him he was full of it. Of course, none of that prevents the €400 charge that will inevitably appear on your credit card bill a few weeks later. I am hertz gold member, the car category I reserved they did not have, instead of providing free upgrade to next level, they asked for 150 Euros to upgrade or offered free downgrade to volvo without giving partial refund back. Horrible service. Had no issues in Paris Hertz, but this one is a nightmare to work with. Still have car will update review after my dropoff. read more

I don't really care to take the time to go into too much detail but I will say that that when I rented a car they told me it had a small dent on it and provided me with a waiver. When I went to return the car and got the receipt there was no problem. When I arrived home I received a bill stating I owed them $500.00 for a car accident that I was in (which was false) then proceeded to also say I didn't fill the gas tank. I have written several emails to customer service both here in the US and in Europe and received no response from them. So, I charged the fee back on my credit card. I received a letter from my credit card that they agreed to settle but then months later received demand letters from them again and my cc co said there wasn't anything I go do to settle this except go to them again directly. While I was in the USA!!! and also charged me for gas while it was full, and airport fees!!!! for 546 Euros!!!. I called my credit card company that has the rental car coverage but BRU Hertz did not have any evidence to send to them, I open a dispute against them and now they have sent my documents to a collection company!!!!
