Our Saga: We rented a "full size" SUV for a 2024 Thanksgiving trip, from Minnesota to Michigan and back, with 5 adults. I picked up a VW Atlas from the Brooklyn Center office on the afternoon of 11/26. About 10 miles down the road I noticed two notes on the VW's display. One dealt with a needed oil change. The other note indicated the FOB needed a new battery. I pulled into a nearby parking lot and called the Brooklyn Center office. They said to come back and they would replace the battery. After returning, I waited in their lobby for over 15 minutes before an employee came out holding the destroyed, and non-functional FOB. They processed a "Transfer Exchange" and provided me with a different rental - a Hyundai Santa Fe. I only put 20 miles on the VW Atlas. The trip to Michigan (11/27) with the Santa Fe was uneventful. (The TPMS indicated low pressure in several tires but it was resolved by simply adding more air...something Hertz should have done before it was rented.) Thanksgiving evening (11/28) we went out to the Santa Fe and it wouldn't start. We gave it a jump start (carefully following the instructions in the User's Manual). The next morning (11/29), the Santa Fe would not start. It was completely dead. I called Hertz roadside assistance. They arranged for a nearby service company to give us a jump start. The service company did find a loose battery connection, so we thought that may have been the issue. They tested the battery and it was good. We drove the Santa Fe throughout the day without issue. That evening we double-checked to ensure there were no dome lights, etc., that were left on. We looked online and found many similar complaints with the Santa Fe's electrical systems. The following morning (11/30), the Santa Fe was completely dead. Not even a glimmer of power from the battery. We called Hertz roadside assistance a second time and got another jump start. We then drove 1.5 hours to Flint, Michigan (the nearest Hertz) to get a replacement vehicle. Hertz customer service indicated there were 10 vehicles of our class (full size SUV) available in Flint. The woman in customer service said we would not be charged to refuel the Santa Fe when it was returned. Upon arrival at Flint airport, we were told no vehicles were available. Frustrating. We began looking for vehicles from other rental agencies in the airport. Luckily, about 1/2 hour after our arrival, Hertz got a Kia Sorento back from an oil change. They began a "Transfer Exchange". About 2 hours after arrival, we were driving away with the Kia Sorento. The morning of 12/1 the Kia Sorento started without issue and we drove back to Minnesota. The afternoon of 12/2 I returned the Sorento to the Brooklyn Park office with a full tank of gas. However, I was charged the refueling cost of the Santa Fe (returned to Flint, MI) regardless of what was previously promised by customer service. After several emails and phone calls to Hertz, I was reimbursed for the fuel cost ($30.01) and reimbursed an additional $50 for the time spent returning the Santa Fe to Flint. If this had been the end, I would have given three stars ("OK") for this review. However... On 1/29/25, two months after the initial rental, I received a damage claim for $726.09 with absolutely no description of the damage; $526.09 for the damage and $200 for an administrative fee. The indicated Date of Loss was 12/2/24. I called Hertz on 1/30/25 and they explained there was glass damage to the VW Atlas I returned on 12/2/24. I calmly explained that I didn't return a VW Atlas on 12/2 (see timeline/saga above). The claim was placed into a Dispute status. Their database clearly showed the VW had been replaced with a Hyundai Santa Fe on 11/26/24. On 2/4/25, after several more emails and calls, the claim was closed. Although all the Hertz representatives I spoke with were pleasant and tried to be helpful, I can't give Hertz more than a 1 star ("Not good") review. read more

Hertz is partnered with this fraudulent company called Platepass. They bill for outstanding tolls on behalf of Hertz. I used an active IPASS Transponder and was charged missed toll fees. I called(over three months on ten separate occasions)to resolve this discrepancy and reverse the charges to my Corporate Credit Card. Each occasion a Plate Pass Operator has indicated that the problem was resolved. The discrepancy has cascaded into Platepass "double charging" my Corporate and Personal Visa Accounts. What a nightmare! It took nine calls over three months to finally resolve the issue. Do yourself a favor and don't rent a vehicle from Hertz,Thrifty or Dollar Car Rental! The PlatePass Nazi's won't be able to continue in exploiting and manipulating transactions on your Credit Card. read more

I was on the phone with them all day had two rental reservations for them from orbitz and one from Hertz.com they would not honor any saying they have no cars. I specifically drove there at close day and saw two cars in my category that I had a reservation for - see pics, 100 percent rentable, available and returned from other states! The car was FILTHY when I picked it up. There was sticky stuff everywhere, crumbs on seats and on dashboard/console, dirty windows, and bugs/bird poop on the windshield. There was also a message on the screen that said the car needed maintenance and needed to see the dealer. This location had no other cars so I wound up on the phone/hold with Hertz for 1.5 hours speaking to the most frustratingly ill-informed employee. The call disconnected while I was on hold. I didn't even bother calling back. Poor car driving experience and an absolute lackluster customer service effort from Hertz (not this branch). I definitely learned a lesson with this one. We rented here because it was the cheapest but it was definitely not worth the headache and garbage car. The location shares a front parking lot with a restaurant. There are weeds growing all over the parking lot and front of the building. There were no other customers around so pickup was quick. We had rented an SUV for a road trip because we wanted more space for camping gear. The vehicle we received was the worst parts of a car and SUV. There was less trunk space than my compact car and the back seats folded forward but not down or out of the way. The car had not been washed, there was mud on it. The inside had some spots as well so it was clear there was no additional sanitizing for Covid. The car also had no front license plate which is required in all of the states we visited (including MN where we picked up the car). I mentioned this to the employee and he said it was fine since the car had Tennessee plates. When I was getting ready to drive away I also noticed there was an unfixed chip in the windshield right in front of my face. I went back in and notified them and they took a picture but still sent me on my way with the car! Spoiler alert - the window spontaneously cracked during our trip from a different spot. We had all sorts of problems with the car and Hertz customer service but I'll gloss over that since this review of this specific location. (Tire exploded upon hitting a small bump in the road; Customer service refused to call us back for dropped call when we needed roadside assistance - leaving us stranded at 6:30 am in the wilderness; no spare tire; windshield problems; etc) The location was closed at the time we had scheduled to drop of the car. The instructions are to drop the keys in the box with a completed envelope. No envelopes available. No instructions where to parking the car and the front of their lot was full. In the end we just left the car in front of the (very remote) office (next to a Chinese restaurant and not much else) and dropped the key in the slot. So far I would give their Rent-to-Buy program less than one star for the Richfield, MN location. I previously booked a 3 day rental online, which was not ready the day of pick-up. It clearly states on the web-site not to proceed to the location until you receive a call confirming the car is ready, which makes sense. I was irked because I didn't receive a call at all. So I called them and was told the car was not ready, and that the car must have gotten lost for a little while. That really shook my confidence so I immediately cancelled that reservation in search of another vehicle. Unfortunately the majority of cars for sale are at the Richfield, MN location, which I thought meant they had a great selection and now I wonder if it is because of their poor service. I have since booked another 3 day rent-to-buy car and was called twice the day prior to let me know the car was not ready which I really do appreciate. However I did not receive a call the day after I was supposed (11/11/14) to pick it up so I was wondering exactly what is going on. I called them and they said they would call me when it is ready and there is no need for me to keep calling them. Oh goodness. I did some research on this program and have read excellent things so I am waiting patiently for a call back but if I had known about this before hand I would definitely have picked a different Hertz location! read more

Honestly, I have never dealt with such a horrible place with horrible service. I currently have a car with insurance and cannot get any correct information from this location. I have received multiple voicemails with information that conflicts from what I have been told by the insurance company. When I try to return the call, the phone is never answered and rings continuously. I have given up with this location of course and have decided to call other locations and had their team and staff answer my questions for me and look up my rental information. There was one instance where someone did answer my call and told tme hat I was frustrating to work with because the insurance company would not pay for the rental car and that I was not authorize to get one in the first place. He started giving me an attitude and said 'You need to figure it out with insurance because I called them, they said they weren't going to pay for it.' When I called insurance immediately afterwards, they told me that was not the case and that I should proceed as is. They only needed to confirm 1 question that they had. Hrmmmm. Then a few days later, Hertz left me another voicemail saying that my rental car was terminated and needed to be returned by a certain date (while my car was not repaired yet). Well once again, I called insurance (because Hertz BC is unreachable and incompetent at their work) and they did not understand why the rental car contract was terminated and sent in a request to extend it. 5 days of continuous calling and no answers, I finally decided to call a different location to see if that request was received. My recommendation would be to avoid this **** show and to go to any other location, no matter the drive. I will also be working with a different location from now on to get my information from and to return the car. read more

This is the worst car rental place I have ever had the misfortune of dealing with. When I picked up the car the gentleman waiting on me said the car has a full tank of gas so we add $30.40 to your fee for the car, then when you return it you can just return it empty. This was not something I was asked as an option, just told that is the way it is. When I had the car I called the number on my paperwork and asked about extending the rental for another day. The lady told me I had it on a weekly rate so it would just be a $5.00 charge added. I asked just $5.00 total? She said yes, that includes taxes and fees. When I returned the car, where my vehicle had been parked while I was gone, I found I had a dead battery. When I went in I asked if they had a jump pack because my battery was dead. The woman said she would check but first I'll check the car in. I said if you don't I will need the car to go home to get another vehicle. After checking the car she found out they did not have a jump pack and beings she had checked the car back in, in order for me to use it again, I would have to rent it for another day at the full rate. So here I was stranded in Brooklyn Center with no ride. The car had 3/4 tank of gas which they would not refund me nor let me siphon out and they charged me $10 for the additional day. So they just left me standing there stranded with no way home. Had the specific car I needed set up on the phone and went to pick it up. When I got there they had rented the car I was supposed to get and didn't have anything comparable available. Sorry, I couldn't find a yelp entry for Hertz Rent-2-Buy or Hertz Richfield, so I left it here. This is a review for the Rent-2-Buy system, where you can reserve a rental car for 3-day test trial and then choose to buy it or not. Very unreliable "Pick up date" availability listed on the website. Customer service was rude and not very helpful. First time I tried rent2buy, the car was not available on time. Then later they called me telling the car was actually sold and it was already being sold when I made he reservation and the website hadn't been updated. 2nd time I tried rent2buy, I called them the day before and they said it was ready. Went to the Hertz dealer in Richfield, MN next day and the car wasn't there, was still in the mechanics shop. I told the sales rep at the front desk the customer sales rep told me on the phone it was ready and sale reps were just like "I don't know why they told you that." Me: "when do you think it will be ready?" Sales Rep: "I don't really know". Me: "Last time I reserved Rent2Buy, it turned out that the car was already in the process of being sold to someone else, and the website hadn't been updated. I just want to make sure that is not the case for this car, and that no one else has reserved it or there are no other renters waiting for it." Sales Rep: "It shouldn't be the case." 2 days later I got a call from a customer sales rep to inform me that it was still not ready. Actual conversation between me and the sale rep: Me: I called Hertz the day before and they said the car was ready, but when I went to the location, it was not there. Sales Rep: We have no record that you called, and we made no promises that the car would be there until you receive a confirmation call. Me: Do you know when the car will be ready? Sales Rep: I have no idea. Me: Do you know who I could contact that might know? Sales Rep: I don't know. Me: Do you know where the car is right now? Sales Rep: It doesn't matter where the car is right now. Me: When I went to the Richfield location, they said its still in the mechanics shop. If I called them again, would they have information about what repairs the car needs? Sales Rep: They should have that information, but whether they are willing to supply you with that information is up to them. Customer services calls me the next day to inform the car is still not available. Me: I went to the Hertz dealer on Saturday and they told me the car is at the mechanic for an inspection. Is it possible to get a copy of the inspection report? Rep: No, maam, we do not provide maintenance reports. Me: And the reason for that is....? Rep: We do not provide maintenance reports. And then finally, they called me on Friday (6 days after the reservation pickup time i initally made) to tell me that the car was already sold to someone, and it turns out the website hadn't been updated. Suggestions: Make realistic estimates for when the vehicle will be ready. The "pickup dates" listed online are not reliable at all. There's no point in making an appointment when you readily renege the agreement. At least tell the customer upfront that you're going to keep them at bay. If you don't know the status of the car, it would help if you actually called an associate to find out and have some documentation or something to confirm where it is and what's the status of it. read more

I had a really bad experience here, one of my first bad ones in many years of renting cars. I am a Gold Rewards member. I rented a car to take out to Colorado. They gave me an almost 3 year old Kia SUV with almost 40,000 miles on it. There was also some wrappers under the front seats which weren't a big deal at the time (the age and wear of the car was the issue). I didn't realize the tires were really horrible and worn as well until I got out to Colorado and almost couldn't drive up Vail Pass, which is on a major freeway (1-70). The freeway was packed with cars and semis and the fact that this SUV was sliding all over the place while going slow was really dangerous and stressful. The car also had a maintenance message that kept popping up, that maintenance was long overdue. In addition, we discovered there was no snow brush included (it's late October in MN), so I had to use a towel and my arm to clean snow off of the car in a pinch. I also had to keep the car for an extra day in order to allow time to get back to Minnesota without driving for 14 hours straight. I didn't realize that the place was closed on Sundays and the person I extended the rental with on the phone didn't mention it. I kept the car at my house for the extra day so I could keep an eye on it rather than have it sit in a lot far away where I'm still responsible for it. I brought it back early in the morning on Monday before they opened so I could also get to work that day. Later that afternoon, I got a no-reply email from them (which I then verified by calling the location) that stated that the car was so dirty with dog hair and dirt outside (I'm guessing from the snow storm we drove through) that my additional $200 deposit was being kept to cover "detailing". For one thing, the car was definitely not that dirty (I have dogs but they weren't in the car - the only way hair could have gotten in there is on our blankets and travel items) and after how horrible it actually performed, the last thing I was inclined to do was to bring it back fully detailed. Another thing is that I could have "detailed" that car in my driveway with a hose - it certainly wouldn't cost $200. And there was zero damage to the car despite the person at the location referring to "damage". I've never actually had this issue before with any rental company so it was a bit shocking to say the least. Lesson learned - I will not rent from them again and I will warn others to stay away as well. Enterprise might have higher prices at times but at least they treat their customers with some respect. I rented a car from Hertz, & was given a vehicle riddled with pre-existing hail damage. It was a little ugly to drive, but it was their only available option that met my family's needs, despite my reservation weeks in advance. The Hertz staff in Brooklyn Center adamantly reassured me that the pre-existing damage was on record in their system and well-documented so there was nothing I should worry about. So I proceeded to rent the car & returned it on time without incident. Months later, Hertz sent me an accusatory collection letter demanding I pay Hertz $8,800.00 for causing damage to their rental car. This was absolutely absurd. After multiple phone calls to Hertz of Brooklyn Center, trying to amicably resolve what I believed was simply their administrative gaffe, the folks at Hertz just blew me off every single time. They promised to call me back, but never did. My insurance company eventually had to take the reigns, after I pleaded for their help with this fraudulent claim by Hertz. Only THEN, did Hertz FINALLY drop their FALSE claim for $8,800.00. Hertz never apologized or acknowledged their error to me. I politely asked Hertz to send me something in writing to acknowledge that I did not cause the damage, now that they have dropped their ridiculous claim per my insurance carrier, but again- Hertz just blows me off! I just want everyone to know what kind of experience I had with this "reputable" car rental chain. read more

I was assigned Hertz by State Farm because I was rear ended. I went against my better judgement by not demanding Enterprise, but whatever. I was on the phone with Hertz twice to verify that I was to get a minivan to replace my minivan so that I could maintain carpooling and car seats, etc and that they please do not spray the van down with Febreeze because I'm highly allergic. (seriously, why do rental companies need to spray chemicals all over the car?) The guy from Hertz showed up a half hour late for the appointment at the body shop with the wrong car - a midsize sedan (and that's rental company midsize). I had to ride with the Hertz guy with my screaming son who was terrified to ride in the car with him and was starving for lunch since I had timed the appointment with his schedule in mind to the store front 25 minutes away to transfer to a minivan. I also should mention that I had to ride with the windows down because my lungs were shutting down from the chemical smell of whatever spray airfreshenner they had sprayed in there. That was fun. During the whole process, no one offered an apology for being late or for showing up with the wrong car. I did finally get a Dodge minivan which looks like it hasn't been cleaned in months. It seriously looks dirtier than my Sienna that hauls 3 young children around daily. Coffee spills and crumbs everywhere. I don't know how this place stay in business except that State Farm keeps shelling business to them. Can't wait to get my own minivan back. Accidents are a hassle. USE ENTERPRISE.
