Had these guys build a surface-grade patio in May 2023. They looked at the project, sent me a proposed scope of work and contract via email, took a deposit of 1/2 the total via bank transfer. They set a date weeks later to start the job. They showed up on time, worked professionally and cleaned up at the end of the day. Whole job took 3 days, and they even replaced all the patio furniture on the last day. The final product was precisely what I asked for, done in a high-quality, workmanlike way. H&G are not the cheapest guys out there, but for the extra money you get a professional product, professionally executed, on time, on budget. Even though I know our project was relatively small for them, we felt like we were very important clients from the moment we first contacted them. Joe and Ben were consummate professionals during the planning phase. The guys that did the work were on time and professional. They all wore masks when I was anywhere nearby. They were incredibly hard-working and perfectionist. They were friendly, which I also appreciated. The finished product is gorgeous and just what we wanted! Very overpriced, the design they came up my fourth grader could have done and the price for monthly cutting was ridiculous. Many better choices in the area do your homework. read more

Hertzler & George did a great job of installing a ground-level drainage for us. Like many homes in Williamsburg, our house was not well designed to support gutters. Our consultant, Brian, was very knowledgeable and recommended a cost-effective solution that involved grading non-permeable soil away from the foundation and using decorative river rock as both cover and splash guard. Highly recommend this company! read more

I had a very mixed experience with H&G. - The design took more than twice as long as estimated. - I loved the overall design and recommendations made by the designer She also made some lovely recommendations for potted plants that i could add to my porch - On the day i signed the contract - we discussed some small changes. She asked me to go ahead with contract and we would settle up at the end. - changes were not included in plants delivered. when i asked about it - i was told that we were going by the contract I would have much preferred that she simply acknowledge that she forgot. This was not a big deal - we worked with what we had - but it did not feel good - on installation day the team worked furiously to beat a rain storm Result was that i had to replant a few items that were not thriving as they were either planted to shallow or too deep - i trusted designer to recommend plants that were both deer and rabbit resistant. It was an explicit conversation that we had a couple of times. she recommended that we add 45 blue phylox plants as a border. i have subsequently discovered that rabbits love phylox and have seen numerous rabbits in my plants I expect that i will have to replace these plants next spring - designer has been gracious answering text questions that i have had regarding my new trees/plants - installation team damaged our irrigation system but did not tell us - there issues 3 different times with the H&G estimate/billing system. I discovered 2 of them during design planning. Designer discovered ~$2k error in final bill. Would I recommend H&G? I am not sure that I could I spent over $13k for landscaping and I am just not $13k impressed with the results. read more

The Hertzler & George Team are amazing!!!! We could not be happier they transformed our backyard into a beautiful living space, with a large brick patio, stonewall for seating and a smaller patio for our future outdoor kitchen. The transformation experience began with their landscape architect whom worked out every detail. He had many great ideas but was very open to our suggestions. Once the design was finalized and the green light given by us the team moved in lead by a knowledgeable supervisor and devoted team to turn our construction site into the backyard and patio of our dreams. We are looking forward to spending time entertaining, relaxing and enjoying time with our grandchildren on the design that became a reality and our favorite room in house!!!! I contacted Hertzler & George to get an estimate to redo various landscape elements around my house plus do to some bush trimmings. Response to come to my house was very quick. I asked that when the estimate was done, I wanted a breakdown of costs by tasks that were discussed. I wanted the option to pick and choose what I wanted done if the cost for everything was too high. I also asked if there would be a landscape plan since some garden areas would be changed a good bit and I needed to see it on paper to know exactly what would be done. As we walked the property, the estimator took many notes and pictures, but did no measurements. Before leaving he said I'd have the estimate the next week and if he wasn't able to attach the design plan in the email, he would drop it by my house. This was on Aug. 23. One week later, Aug. 30, I hadn't received anything so I emailed. The response was that he planned on getting the estimate to me the next day. I received nothing. I waited one more week and emailed again on Sept. 6. I received the estimate that day. I DID NOT get an estimate that was broken down by task, it was one lump sum amount with a listing of what would be done. I did NOT receive any landscape design plans. I emailed back asking for a breakdown and the plans. As of this date, Sept. 17th, I have not heard back from Hertzler & George. Very disappointing and a great waste of my time. read more

This may be the outfit for large commercial developments but if our experience is any guide, homeowners will quickly find themselves at the back of the line once you pay their design fee. We never felt we really got their attention, and certainly not the design plan we paid for; in fact no comprehensive design plan at all. The one partial-estimate they gave us was almost a thousand dollars over what a competitor bid for the same thing. Very disappointing. read more
