Heartwood Fence built me the best fence and exceeded my expectations. They're a young company…read morerelative to some of the big companies in my area, and I always like to support local businesses when I can. When I called for a quote, I talked to Spence who helped me throughout the process and was sure he answered my and my wife's questions. He presented different quotes as requested without any fuss. The crew that showed up at my property to do the work were diligent, hardworking, and performed their job to the max. They removed my old 4.5' fence and installed a 6' fence with 6x6 posts, which is unusual if you look around, as I did as I was out and about around the area, I haven't seen anyone with 6x6 posts, all of them have 4x4 posts, which means that this fence is going to last a very long time in my opinion. Also, the cap and rails on the top of the fence are beefier than most of this style, (2x6). The word I use to describe this fence when I tell my friends about it is Diesel! When the inspector came out to look at it, he walked the fence and was done in about 2 mins, with no questions as I'm sure he was impressed with the quality. if you're shopping around for a fence, make sure you talk to Spencer and the folks at Heartwood Fence. Not only did I get a higher quality fence, it was at a price that was less than the competition.

UPDATE 7/15/26 - Last month Jonathan Zook (DanDale Marketing) contacted me about our experience…read more After discussing with him he said what happened was not what DanDale holds as being their standard. He apologized for the negative experience. He further advised since we were not provided a gate on one side, had removed the lattice and reduced the amount of fence being installed, despite the previous price adjustment it was still not correct and that we were due about a $1700 refund. He offered to come out and estimate putting in a custom gate, but reiterated there will likely still be somewhat of a gap issue. We decided to just go without the gate and accepted sending us a refund check. We were contacted today by Ashley McNair. She advised that a refund check was in the mail. This does not change the overall sales to installation experience, but we are satisfied with the resolution, which is the basis for changing the experience rating from 1 star to 3 stars. Recommend them but be prepared to manage the installation and communications, to ensure your expectations are met. ORIGINAL POST: We had a premium vinyl fence installed by DanDale Fencing at our home in Yorktown, Virginia (located in the new Celestial Way Community), and the experience was disappointing for a project costing us nearly $16,000. While the installation crew worked hard and the materials are solid, the planning, communication, and honesty from management were severely lacking. Our salesperson, Billy, assured us the yard's grade was no issue. On installation day, the crew told us to have a gate, a large gap would be left under the fence on the right side of our yard. When we called the office, Jeremy claimed we had been warned beforehand, which was untrue. Only after we pushed back did they offer a "custom gate" to fix the problem -- at an extra cost. Because we refused to pay more for something that should have been planned correctly, we ended up losing a gate entirely just to keep the fence flush to the ground. There was no English‑speaking supervisor or project manager on-site, making communication difficult (we had to use Google Translate). The crew did their best, but they were put in a bad position by their own management. We ended up without a gate on the right side of our property unless we pay additional for a custom gate. So, despite losing a gate and access to part of our yard due to their poor planning, DanDale offered no price adjustment for no gate nor any other appropriate solutions. In the end, we upheld our financial responsibility; they did not uphold theirs. To date, they have made no attempt to follow-up with us or take any satisfaction steps. Despite what others have gone through, I cannot recommend a company like DanDale Fence.

Unfortunately, there is no "Zero Star" option. This has been one of the worst companies I have ever…read moredealt with. Stay the heck away from this company. I paid over $10,000 for a fence that probably should have cost no more than $6,000. Only SIX MONTHS after installation, several of the fence boards started warping at the bottom and lifting up. I called for what I reasonably expected to be warranty service and was told they would send me a QUOTE to repair it. A quote? After only six months? If they had used screws instead of cheap nails, I doubt this would have happened in the first place. What makes this even worse is that during the sales process, they were very critical of Home Depot and Lowe's fence boards, repeatedly telling me how much more superior their product was. Yet when they ran short of boards during my installation, I personally overheard the service manager tell the installers to go to Home Depot to get more boards. So much for the "superior" product the salesman sold me on. I finally told them I would fix the fence myself and would make sure anyone considering their services knew about my experience. I also called the original salesman, who had sold me on what he described as "bumper-to-bumper" 5-year warranty protection. When I questioned why I was being charged for repairs only six months later, his response was, "I never told you that everything would be covered." Really? The only people I have anything positive to say about are the installers. They were hardworking, professional, and I appreciated their effort. Frankly, they were the best part of the entire experience. As for the company itself and the promises made during the sales process: HALF A STAR at best. Buyer beware.

He was very careful to indicate that he didn't want to add anything unnecessary to the point where I was like, no no... please tell me all the things that need to be fixed. In fact, I wish we had fixed even more unnecessary parts of the fence, but he cares deeply about the budget and savings and pointed out which things are great to fix now and which can wait. He was incredibly honest. To make matters better, he came in at a lower price than the other quotes I received, AND he was willing to schedule work immediately (pending mandatory utility checks). My house is in Vienna, VA, and his brother Edwin, who partners with him, came out and did most of the work. They work together. His brother is super kind and patient, and even decided to work on a day with temperatures surpassing mid-90s. Pro-tip: Leave out some cold drinks for your contractors on hot days. In fact, they even added a few extra bonus fixes for me since I had a few rotten fence caps, and he made the broken fence posts look perfect.
