First and foremost, he is local to the area so we knew he wasn't going to make any recommendations that felt out of place. Since we were buying an older home, it was important to us to keep the integrity of the house. He asked all the right questions and held our hands along the way since this was all brand new to us. In the end his designs were exactly what we were looking for in our dream home -- including two roof decks. He was responsive from the get go and always respectful of our suggestions. Additionally he provided thoughtful answers on how to make design requests work -- and if they didn't, he would clearly explain why. He also worked well with our contractor and was in close contact with them every step of the way. Doug was particularly helpful during our Board of Appeals process (for the roof decks). He charged $150/hr. 3 drawings and 3…read moremeetings later it was clear that he was not listening to us and had not even come close to what we had requested. That debacle cost us $2100. We read about Arcbazar.com and decided to try them. We submitted drawings of the space with measurements, described the project and what we would like to see and accomplish, photos of the space. We bid a low $600 for the project and submitted asking for completion in 2 weeks. Within a few days we had 10 people from around the world interested in our project. During the process we received requests for clarification or more information. At the end of the process we had 7 submissions most including elevations, renderings, materials lists and sources. All of these submissions met our basic criteria. All were impressive and beat the $150/hr guy in presentation, value and execution. You can send the designs to friends and family to help you rank the designs. We all agreed on our top 1, 2 and 3 designs. I requested and was given the contact information for our top ranked designer. We have contacted that person to modify the initial design. That is outside of Arcbazar but have to say this part of the process is also going splendidly at a reasonable price. We are thrilled with this process and will never go back. Hints: ~ You might want to allow more time for your project ~ Offer a little more money. The top guy only gets a portion of the pie. ~ Ana, in the office, is also accessible by phone for questions. Just have to work in their time zone. ~ The more specific you are the better results. ~ Our bids came from Armenia, Belaruse, Italy, France, Romania, etc So you get an international flare.

We had 13 designers from around the world sign up for our kitchen remodeling project and ended up with a total of 6 designs. 3 of these designs provided excellent ideas on how to rearrange our kitchen after knocking down the wall between the dining room and kitchen to open the space up; ideas we would have never thought of! Our first choice ended up being the design submitted from France! We love it! It has a bit of a European feel to it; beautiful, welcoming, cozy, and very functional. I retained their service when my partner and I bought a house in Brookline about a year ago. We decided that we basically get rid of all the stuff we had at that point and do the whole house based on a new concept, which we weren't sure about at that point. Plus, we are super busy people, professionally, so we couldn't spare lots of time on this project and so needed someone who was cool and dependable. And here (after we interviewed a few potential candidates) comes Amanda Reid, the principal of this design firm. She was something! First of all, she has such cool, sophisticated taste on everything we need advice on: furniture, wall color, redoing the whole kitchen and bathroom etc. We were originally into the super modern, kind of cold look, but she persuaded us to introduce some eclectic elements like antique pieces into the whole mix, and the resulting space is just unique, tasteful, and functional. Whenever we throw a home party, people who visit our house for the first time usually gasp entering the door. And we tell them we did everything by ourselves (just joking: we give the studio full credit gracefully and gratefully always). There are so many other things I can say, but this is already getting too long. Just a few more things. Amanda is super organized and a crystal clear communicator. Over the course of three-four months, she probably made hundreds, possibly thousands of decisions, small and big. She always presented in her inimitable perfectly clear way what our options were and executed everything in her effortless manner (her presentation skills are something to behold). At work, I interact with some of the smartest people in the world, but rarely have I witnessed such efficiency and transparency in communication. We wanted no headache, no pain, no drama because we are so busy, and Amanda definitely made our life easy. Anyway, to sum up, if you live in this area and have some big complex project, go with her. I have a feeling it's too good to be true when he's taking only 1/2 of the regular price to fix my house. Same story he told other people about have a construction company on top of his financial advising firm to help support his boys for college. Well, none of them go to college! He mostly working by himself despite the fact that he kept telling me he has a crew. Brought in his teen son and his son's friends to fix what it was supposed to a 70K job. More than three weeks and he still can't get 2 rooms in my basement fixed. He did such a bad job that I had to fire him. All his work was to cover up his poor work. He was to install a small window in my study. Not only he cut the wire to the outlet and lost the wire inside the wall, he slapped on the molding backwards and didn't bother to sand the compound before installing the molding. When asked he said he didn't finish and he was going to caulk the 1/4 inch space between the mold and the wall after he decided to just put shim in there to make it look leveled. He did the same thing to my door molding. A lot more stuff that he did not make any sense to even a non construction person like me. Most of all he provide work outside of his scope!!! He's not and licensed contractor! He's registered with the state as an HIC meaning he is registered as a handyman. He did demo work at my house without a CSL license, which required for about 90% of construction work. Then he has the gut to ask me to pay him for the completed work stating that he is at 88% finished. He screwed up all my electrical wires causing me to pay $650 for an electrician to come to fix it. $2000 for another LICENSED contractor to fix his mess. After doing more extensive research, I find out that he was sued by another person for his poor work as well. Not only that, he was sued by many credit card companies for non payment. So much for being a financial advisor. Stay away from this guy or you will be bankrupt and without a house to live in!

I was actually planning to repaint my bath tub, because of crazy stains but Jose told me to let him try to clean it - let's just say both bath tubs look brand new! The entire place looks spotless and he even pulled out the fridge and stove to clean the back!
