    Steam Train Rides!!
    Kent M.

Best steam museum in northwest Indiana! Free admission. Great for groups, large families. Wheel chair accessible. We paid a visit to the museum on Saturday after Independence Day. Due to the recent extreme heat experienced in the region, the crowds were relatively light. I was with adults in my group and we were able to ask questions with relative ease. The volunteers are very knowledgeable and helpful. From what I gathered, the Shay #7 will not be running until Labor Day weekend this year, due to high potential for grass fires. We enquired about the saw mill and power generation displays and were initially told both would not run during our visit. Apparently a young volunteer arrived shortly thereafter to pour the coal to her and the power plant came alive. Take a train ride or two on their private tracks. You will come to within feet of the Michigan State Line and then venture back to the steam village. Train ride tickets are $5 each, or 4 for $17.00 In addition to the engine storage shed, there are also a couple sheds that house gasoline and diesel powered equipment, mostly farming equipment. Visit their web site for additional details.

What is not to love!! We've been coming for 5 years now. We skip the food, but enjoy everything else. Get there 30 minutes before open to avoid lines. The place is already open at that time. The employees are all passionate about trains. We all love the little train best. If you come in late July or August, hit Stateline Blueberries after you ride. :-) Yummmm! It is 10 minutes from the train museum.

Visit Santa in the winter, Halloween spooky train, or just for fun in the summer. Several trains to ride on!

View of a real Soda Jerk who also creates the ice cream treats.

The Steam Museum has a really nice Ice Cream and Soda Bar with real Soda Jerks. The kitchen also prepares a variety of burgers, dogs and sandwiches. The museum is a great family activity.

Such a fun place to visit! My family loves the variety of trains there are to ride, especially the smaller ones. We go every year!

Our children thoroughly enjoyed riding the trains! Very nice volunteer-run, growing attraction. Beautiful area.

Being able to see outfits and paraphernalia, and read things about Stan Lee and how great his mind worked was impressive. The last exhibit I saw was the James Bond exhibit. This two was outstanding. I wish I had known it was two separate rooms because I left the first one and thought it was it before tumbling upon the second room which had even bigger and better things. It's impressive how they had the James Bond car on display. I ended up buying quite a bit of James Bond paraphernalia at the end and wear it to this day.

I can not imagine 59 men packed into a sub with 1 bathroom and sharing bunk space. I'm slightly claustrophobic but the tour was only about 30 minutes and the distance toured was short. I can't imagine living on it for an extended period. We spent about 2 extra hours touring the rest of the museum but it must have been a field day for local schools, as it was packed with children. My second favorite exhibit was touring the Pioneer Zephyr train.

And was it incredible to stand in front of A Sunday on La Grande Jatte after watching Ferris Bueller for decades? Of course. It was an awe-inspiring experience that gave me literal goosebumps and even got me a little emotional. But the rest of The Art Institute is incredible, too. We barely scratched the surface and yet managed to see several iconic paintings -- including American Gothic and that famous Van Gogh self-portrait. Obviously we should've planned more than a couple of hours in the place. I feel like you could spend a week wandering around the place and you'd still feel like you hadn't seen everything. I really can't wait to go back someday.
