I'd always wanted to visit Notre Dame Stadium during one of my outreach events in South Bend. I'd never gotten the chance until: 1) A Garth Brooks concert - Amazing and 2) a Notre Dame game (also amazing). The basics: Of course, this is the home of the Fighting Irish football team. Established in 1930, Notre Dame Stadium was designed by the legendary coach Knute Rockne. Sadly, Rockne only enjoyed the stadium for a year before being killed in a plane crash. The stadium was expanded in 1997 and currently seats 80,795. Students are guaranteed tickets to every home game. Part of the stadium's legendary status lies in the fact that Notre Dame has more Heisman Trophy winners (7) and more national championships (11) than any other college team. In terms of accessibility, it's advised to contact the ticket office well in advance. They do have reserved seating areas for patrons utilizing wheelchairs/scooters or other mobility issues - seating is available to patrons and one companion. However, Notre Dame Stadium has a long history of selling out its games - so, pre-planning is absolutely vital. There are elevators to access the stadium upper level. I have had very few issues here and have experienced nothing but professionalism from the staff. The food? Hit and miss. It's not bad enough that I'm marking the stadium down, but it doesn't quite live up to the stadium's legendary status. Of course, you get basics - hot dogs, popcorn, nachos, soft drinks, water, and beer. You can get chicken tenders at some stands, french fries, pizza, and both hot and iced coffee. I actually found the iced coffee pretty awesome. This year, Notre Dame added an Impossible Burger, walking tacos, quesadillas, mac and cheese, some specialty nacho options, and a beloved pork tenderloin (all hail). Finally, there are some desserts/sweets: shamrock pretzels, hot chocolate, milkshakes, and frozen custard. You can't bring in your own food/drinks. Tailgating is allowed (I might even say encouraged). There's also lots of other activities on game days. It's a festive atmosphere. Notre Dame has a beautiful stadium and an incredible game day experience filled with unique traditions and dedicated fans. The campus surrounding the stadium is beautiful and parking can be reserved in advance, but be aware that you may have to walk a mile or more to the game from on-campus parking lots. Even as someone that doesn't keep up with college sports, it was easy to get excited in this atmosphere. I enjoyed the view from our seat location (Lower Section 17). One specific critique I have was about the concessions experience at the game, which kept us in line for 30+ minutes waiting to get a below average pretzel with cheese and hot dog. While I know lines are expected at large events, the systems were particularly slow, leading to additional challenges and causing service to be delayed. Ultimately this kept us from seeing important portions of the game, which was pretty disappointing for my first experience. read more

Just bought a soft pretzel and a coke for @$15 and the Coca Cola is decent (this time - I've had it here when the mix was off) but the pretzel is like eating a cold piece of squashed bread. First time. Very good experience. I didn't have a dog in the fight, but Sweetie went to school at ND's opponent so we made a road trip. Parking was pretty darn easy. Expensive, even compared to other events, but oh well. Pleasant walk through a pretty campus. Helpful staff at the stadium. Pretty easy to get in and find our seats. Crowd was fun and relaxed. Great sight lines and message boards, big screen for closeups, etc. Food and drinks were super expensive, and the drink carriers are worthless- won't hold a drink securely, so hard to carry up to seats. And I wish they had cupholders at the seats- water bottles rolled up to next row and would keep rolling. Minor complaints though. Bleachers were comfy enough, and it looks like you can bring cushions. All in all very good experience and would definitely come back. read more

Nice stadium, lots of history and full of fans. My team lost, but we were well treated by about 98% of the ND Fans. Those fans seated right around us were very friendly and represented the school well. The stadium has nice, roomy restrooms, and they are heated, so that made for a relief from the wind and cold in an uncrowded space, it was busy but not crowded and clean. Twice I went and the rain never stopped nor did the points against my school. Nothing nearby for food and drink before or after and the parking lots and grass got super muddy. But, it is worth a visit once given its epic history. read more

I've never been to Notre Dame before and found myself in South Bend with my wife. She just happened to have a work event through the weekend so I found myself with free daytime hours to kill. It just so happened the Irish had a home game against Virginia Tech. Even more in my favor was when I checked Stub Hub 2 hours before game time and found I could score a ticket for $15 with all fees included. Next thing you know I find myself driving around U.N.D. trying to find a place to park that didn't break the bank. Being from Wisconsin and a frequent Packers game attendee I was in a bit of sticker shock that the going rate for parking was about $40 and you still had about a mile walk to the stadium. There is some street parking in the surrounding neighborhoods, just be prepared for a lengthy hike. The campus is absolutely stunning. The stadium is rich with history and I don't think there's really a bad seat in the house. Unlike my Lambeau Field, the bleacher seats here are made of plastic rather than aluminum. In theory this would help keep the butt just a little warmer on those cold game days. Concession prices are about on point with what you'd expect to pay at a sports venue. I felt the selection of food offerings at the concession stands was a little more limited than that of similar sports venues. I was in the stadium pretty early and on the opposite side of where my seat was. Rather than walk around the concourse I walked around the inner bowl. Almost every usher I passed on my way around gave me a Welcome to Notre Dame greeting. A great destination to enjoy a college game day. I could almost here the "Rudy" chants while roaming around the stadium. read more

So Notre Dame Stadium is to College Football as Wrigley Field is to Major League Baseball! Both shrines where the faithful come to worship... both haunted by the ghosts of legends past! Designed in 1930 with the requirements of Knute Rockne in hand, the fan is close to the field. Not a bad seat in the house. The expansions of the late 90's and 2014 have simply enhanced the game day experience and taken nothing away from the stadiums historical significance. On a brisk October afternoon we Funkster three arrived early to tailgate late. This day our alma mater suffered a bone crushing defeat at the hands of the Fighting Irish. As we left the stadium we couldn't help but recall the words of legendary sports writer Grantland Rice: "Outlined against a blue-gray October sky, the Four Horsemen rode again. In dramatic lore their names are Death, Destruction, Pestilence, and Famine. But those are aliases. Their real names are: Stuhldreher, Crowley, Miller and Layden." There is something absolutely magical about the football stadium at the University of Notre Dame. I have been to many sporting venues - both Yankee stadiums, Joe Lewis Arena, AT&T Stadium - and I don't think any of these stadiums match the austere atmosphere of Notre Dame Stadium. I very first experienced Notre Dame football in "the house that Rockne built" before its first major expansion in 1997. Still to this day, I can remember sitting on the slim wooden benches as the sun lit "Touchdown Jesus." Growing as a fan through the years, the dark years and the successful ones alike, this heritage is still felt inside Notre Dame stadium every Saturday during football stadium. From Lou Holtz to Brian Kelly's current reign as head coach, Notre Dame stadium remains a hallowed hall of tradition. In its current iteration, the Notre Dame stadium enjoys many major modern luxuries that some Notre Dame enthusiasts begrudgingly embrace. The stadium now welcomes just shy of 60,000 Irish fans to varying levels of comfort as there is now a high-end club level in the stadium (which I could never dream of affording.) The most noticeable change to the gameday experience is the massive videoboard and sound system that now looms over the football field. While I know traditionalists lament the addition of the videoboard as a possible era of gimmicky sponsor driven content awaits, the enhancement creates a much more enjoyable viewing experience. You now can see every play, and you can enjoy replays. (Side note: coming from the in-venue entertainment industry, I think Notre Dame still has some work to do developing the proper content to complement a traditional Irish football experience... but... that's a totally different topic.) I usually harshly judge a venue's concessions, but I think that Notre Dame does a fairly decent job. Their food services team Levy isn't my favorite, but I did enjoy my shamrock shaped pretzel and the Doritos walking taco. For a stadium the prices are moderate. Not cheap, but I've definitely encountered much more expensive (here's lookin' at you Yankee Stadium.) You don't have to be a Notre Dame fan to get caught up in the fervor of an Irish football gameday. The student section's passion, humor and dedication spreads quickly through the stadium. No matter your allegiance, you'll quickly find yourself clapping along to the Notre Dame Victory March. read more

I appreciate the bench style seating and would recommend purchasing a stadium cushion when you're there. Concessions had a good amount to chose from and the sodas/Powerade's were served with lids that didn't require a straw (think Starbucks). Bathroom facilities were super clean as well! read more

We came to South Bend for the Pitt vs Notre Dame football game on October 13th as Pitt fans. It wasn't much after the first quarter that we realized these "fans" and stadium are very much overrated...more so than the football team. Stadium: I did not know that they built around the original structure which takes away from the integrity of the stadium and what we thought we were going to see. Small bathrooms but stadium was very clean. Staff: Excellent staff! Helpful and knowledgeable. Very friendly. Food: Garbage stadium food. Notre Dame Fans: Quiet, rude, entitled and vulgar. Most of the fans were not friendly. With all the money that comes into the school I was surprised Of the amount of trashy people were actually in the stadium. I actually had to tell a woman to watch her mouth because of all the F bombs. We travel all over the ACC to watch Pitt play and this was the worst treatment by the home town fans. My advice is don't come with expectations, come to cheer for ND or you will be harassed, and eat well before the game. read more

Visiting the University of Notre Dame Stadium for a football game is just about the most exciting and wholesome fun you can have (involving sports). We attend at least one game per year, and highly recommend the experience. We really love to go to late September games, as you have a chance at sunny, great weather. But we don't really mind standing in the sleet or freezing cold to SHAKE DOWN THE THUNDER and cheer on our Irish :) Must see: the grotto, the Cathedral, the marching band playing on the stairs of the dorm before the game, the Hammes gift shop (bring your wallet because it's hard to resist buying everything there!), and of course- the stadium itself. Currently under renovation - they're in the midst of a $400M project that will add 3 massive buildings and 4,000 premium seats. Also, check out the weekend event schedule before you go, to make sure you can squeeze in some of the pre-game events. We completely love going to the pep rally Friday night! I wrote out a sports bucket list about 15 years ago and this was at the very top of that list. It has been on the top of my unwritten list of 30 plus years since I was 10 years old and became a college football fan. Over the past few years, I have been very fortunate to be able to knock out several of those bucket list items but until 2 weeks ago Notre Dame was my "Holy Grail". (Catholic pun intended). Finally, I was able to attend the Stanford vs Notre Dame game on 9/29/18, a clash of Number 7 vs Number 8. We got here 7 hours before game time in order to soak the entire experience. We went to the bookstore to buy souvenirs, checked out the statues around the stadium, visited the Golden Dome, The Grotto, and Touchdown Jesus and of course drank a lot of beer. A friend of mine new a guy who new a guy who tailgates so we had a place to hang out. The people were unbelievably welcoming and made the experience 10 times better. The stadium itself was everything I hoped for. I walked through Gate C and did a lap around the stadium. You can't do a complete lap on the bottom section because of the student/band entrance but you can go up the ramp and work your way back down to the other side. The bottom floor concourse feels old, not in a bad way more of a historic way. The old program banners hanging in the concourse are a treat to old football fans. There is a section with their Heisman winners, National Championships and All-Americans near I believe Gate B( I could be off on this part). Once you walk into the actual stadium, you can tell there isn't a bad seat in the house. We sat at the bottom level near the corner of the end zone and it was perfect. Upon taking my seat I had goosebumps. All I could think of was Paul Hornung, Joe Montana, Raghib Ismail and of course Rudy! The 10 year old kid in me was super excited. It didn't hurt that Notre Dame put a beat down on Stanford so the crowd was hyped. This is like Mecca for college football fans (not sure a Muslim metaphor is appropriate for a Catholic college but you get the point) and should be on every sports fans bucket list! read more

There is nothing quite like a night game in Notre Dame Stadium. The energy is infectious. You can physically feel it. As far as facilities go, its usually very clean. The bathrooms are clean and large enough to handle the thousands of fans during a game day. I've never actually bought food at the game because usually, you're full from tailgating. The ushers are all very friendly. If any issues arise, they are quick to deal with it safely. Honestly, they have one the best jobs because they get to watch the games. Gorgeous stadium, I visited ND for the USC game in 2017 and was utterly impressed with the stadium. It was my very first visit, so I cannot compare the stadium to how it was before the renovations but I can tell you that its immaculate. I could only hope the LA Coliseum is 50% as nice after its renovation. The bathrooms are so clean and nice with the special flooring design. All the employees are ever so friendly - plus all the ND fans are very respectful to the visiting team. I was soo impressed - that one day I would come back with my wife. The stadium holds over 80,000 screaming fans, with room for well-over 100,000 tailgaters on the surrounding lots. This is the "House that Rockne Built", and the ND Fighting Irish football fans are fiercely loyal to their team. In recent years, the field has switched from natural grass to FieldTurf, which will hold up much better in this all-outdoor stadium. At this time, the stadium is still undergoing renovations as they complete a $400 million project to add luxury boxes and increase the stadium's capacity to around 85,000. The project began after the conclusion of the 2014 football season and is expected to be finished in time for the 2017 season. One of the best known icons of the stadium is the view of the artwork painted on the side of the Hesburgh Library, which is viewable from one end of the stadium. The mural of The Word of Life by Millard Sheets of the resurrected Jesus has become better known as "Touchdown Jesus". The figure of Christ is shown with both arms extended over his head in the universal symbol of touchdown. Notre Dame football is synonymous with names such as Coach Knut Rockne, Gorge Gipp (The Gipper), and The Four Horsemen from the early years. Ara Parseghian, Lou Holtz, Joe Thiesmann, Brady Quinn, Joe Montana, and so many others representing the more current years. IMO this is the absolute best place in the world. Clearly I'm biased and as a an alumna my opinion is heavily influenced by my own experience, but objectively speaking even if you're not an Irish fan I can almost guarantee you an amazing experience if you ever make it to campus. Honestly words don't do it justice and if you've never been, only stepping foot on this magical campus can. When you do make it, make sure you enjoy the plethora of game day events available from watching the band play on campus, to the tailgates, to hitting up the grotto. Whether you're a religious person or not, the grotto blow you away and you will experience something like you never have before. One of my favorite game day traditions are the steak sandwiches that the knights of Columbus sell as well on south quad. Bring a football or a frisbee, walk around, and be prepared to enjoy every aspect of a place that many of my closest friends and family members call home. read more

I've been lucky enough to finally step into historic Notre Dame Stadium twice over the last few months. Once was to watch Notre Dame play against my Alma mater, Ball State, and the other was for the Garth Brooks concert. The venue is grandiose, indeed. 85,000 people can fit into this stadium, and that's impressive. Staff are busy during events keeping the place clean and services running smoothly. I have to admit that the best part of visiting is the bathroom. The women's bathrooms are clean and well equipped to keep the thousands of fans moving through efficiently without traditional long lines that we've grown to expect at venues this big. Thank you Notre Dame. Seriously. Take note that if you're planning to attend an upcoming event Notre Dame has a strict bag policy. "Under the policy, fans will be allowed to bring with them a clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bag that does not exceed 12 inches by 6 inches by 12 inches or a one-gallon plastic bag (such as Ziploc or Hefty bags)." The stadium is chalk full of tradition with the marching band, diagonal lines in the end zones, and classic beginning of the fourth quarter joke. My wife is an ND alum so that makes me a fan by default. We've got season tickets and have seats bordering the visitor section. This is college football at its finest even if the team has be woefully bad lately. There is nothing like looking up from my seat to see TD Jesus with his hands raised wondering what is up with his beloved team. This is where the legends of the game left their mark. Not a bad seat in the house and knowledgeable ushers and fans. Never really seen the obnoxious drunks that ruin good times for everyone. Even the visiting teams fans will have a playful razzing with you that is always fun. And you just have to love the IN State troopers corny drunk driving warning to start the 4th quarter. read more
