I am updating a previous 5-star review based on recent experiences. Please note in my previous review how I specifically address the fact that the business owner is willing to negotiate on prices and commonly gives discounts on large quantities. This is important for the information below Quick take: If you decide to try Hi-Bred, I hope you have deep pockets. And don't forget, the owner is always right, never the customer. Back story: I have shopped at Hi-Bred nearly two dozen times over the past 9 years. In the past, when the owner (Shawna) was located at her previous space near Walnut Hills, I really enjoyed visiting her. The selection was good and the prices were fair. Nearly every time I purchased with her she would negotiate on bulk sales and willingly offered discounts for items that had issues; loose buttons or tiny tears. As is common with vintage clothing stores in Cincinnati (Pixel 19 vintage, RAD OTR, etc.) the more clothing you purchase the more willing they are to offer a bulk discount... some places even advertise this. The last few times I had been to Hi-Bred I left disappointed with the selection, the prices, and inclusion. However, I kept returning in hopes I was visiting on an off day. As the operator of a small family owned business myself, I understand the stress of an operation such as this... and we all have bad days. I get it. However, I also know this is the career I picked and that fair prices, patience, and kindness are the ingredients to success. Sadly, these critical ingredients are now missing at Hi-Bred. More details about the owners communication: The last three times I had been in, Shawna seemed very unwelcoming. I totally understand having an off day and was sad to see her so distant. I hoped that she would return to her friendly self in time. Unfortunately, that hasn't been the case. On my most recent trip I brought up a trench-coat I wanted to buy and asked for the price as the tag had fallen off. I soon realized that I had seen the tag on the floor and brought it up to the front. The tag was indeed for the coat in question, it was $150 which I communicated to her. She then proceeded to print out a new price tag and re-labeled the jacket for $200, $50 more than it was when I walked into the store. How does math like this work? A customer is interested so you raise the price? I have spent a lot of time and money here. I would estimate that I have made a dozen different transactions at this establishment since my first visit in 2015. The vast majority of these transactions saw some sort of discount for one or all items. She was always willing and happy to negotiate when I purchased several items at once. So on my most recent visit I attempted to once again negotiate, as we had always done, to buy four items. Some Buttons were coming loose on a cardigan so I hoped that she may discount the item accordingly. However, before I could finish speaking she cut me off and told me that I was being rude for even asking. She followed up with stating that she wouldn't come to my place of business and ask for a discount. I found this extremely distasteful. Shawna has no idea what I do for business. In fact, customers come in all the time asking for discounts, samples, free goods, etc. In the real world, negotiation is the definition of business. We negotiate our insurance rates, supplier fees, royalties, contract prices, and much more. Shawna continued and carried on stating that the cost of rent was so high where she was located and the pandemic was extremely challenging for her... As if she had been the only person to go through it. And how am I, a customer, supposed to know your rent rates? Shawna isn't the same friendly person I use to do business with. I understand recent struggles as a small business owner, but one thing I would never do is take my frustrations out on my customers! Why bite the hand that feeds you? The owners comments about the cost of living and the cost of rent were extremely tone deaf and hypocritical. The customer isn't responsible for your rent rates, you signed the contract. Sad to see Hi-Bred is a shell of what it use to be. Best of luck, I hope you can bounce back read more

Visiting from New York and traveling the country and world I can honestly say this is one of the best vintage consignment stores I have ever been to. The volume is tremendous. The selection is exhilarating. It is a good thing I do not live in Cincinnati for I well I'd probably go broke. In addition the owner of the store is wonderful and so is her little friendly dog. I had so much fun I went back again but she was closed. I purchased an adorable little hat, and a beautiful black blouse. I must also mention the stunning and unusual artwork she also had for sale. She also has housewares downstairs and some furniture. If you love vintage and new edgy fashion go to. My second review a few months later. Wearing my new Italian Shirt Passion dress from The Most wonderful vintage store, which also carries new and fashion forward clothing as well. Shawna does FLAT-OUT amazing work in here. Every vignette is carefully arranged. And she has some awesome finds. I mean, let's find an occasion to wear these gorgeous beaded gloves and stud your man with these classy suspenders. Check out the jewelry section. So many sparkles! She has a great selection from each era. If you are into 50's full skirts or 60's glam or 70's bohemian she has tons to choose from. Everything is cared for on the hanger. And I love that she has a good section for menswear too. The leather jackets are flippin' awesome. James Dean meats Danny Zuko showed up on his bike and wants to take you out for a scandalous date night. Hold on while I grab my vintage pillbox and flowy slik scarf. This is probably the best high quality vintage fashion store for both men and women in Cincinnati! Unlike some vintage stores in town, this shop is very tasteful and well-curated. Even if you are not really in the mood of buying anything, it is worth just stopping by and looking at the exhibition of the vintage goods! What I like the most about Hi-Bred is that it has a "wide" collection of vintage jewelries, and they are beautifully curated and displayed! (Go for those "drawers" and pull them out! It is a treasure!) Their collection of hats--both for men and the women--is outstanding too! If you are a vintage lover and also find mall-shopping boring and un-stimulating, do stop by Hi-Bred! Gahhh I am obsessed with Hi-Bred! One of my girlfriends recommended we check it out for some fun New Year's Eve dresses. I was a little skeptical at first. I mean, how good could they be? Why would I spend more money on something that was used and 10 times older than something I could find at the mall? All my doubts flew out the door the second I stepped inside. From the fur shawls to the detailed sequin ballgowns, I felt like I had stepped into a fantasy land of dress-up clothes that my 6-year-old self would've dreamed of. I could've spent HOURS sifting through and trying on her racks and racks of unique, one-of-a-kind outfits from seemingly every decade. I can't even count the number of "oh my goshs" and "why isn't it socially acceptable to dress like Jackie Kennedy nows". I somehow dwindled my stack of clothes to a handful of sequined (of course) tops and dresses and landed on the PERFECT New Year's dress - completely covered in gold and black sequins with a drapped back neckline - for just $60! For the amount I would've otherwise spent at Kenwood or Rookwood, I now have a totally unique dress that no other girl will have. I WILL be back (probably far too often) for more! read more

Oh my gosh! You MUST go and peruse this beautiful shop. So many lovely things to look at. Hi-Bred has not just a range of interesting vintage clothing but also gorgeous jewelry and accessories. And hats! So many cute hats! You'll also be inspired to redecorate with all the housewares, glasswares and home decor. Some vintage or resale shops are a jumble of items but Hi-Bred beautifully displays everything. Even though I didn't make any purchases, I loved just browsing and admiring the store. I love the idea of bringing your dog to work with you but it's not my problem if your dog is trying to escape. Very aloof person who acted like she couldn't care less about customers. I love Hi-Bred. The items on display and how they're placed flow nicely through the shop. It's very appealing. It's also very easy to find something you like to take home with you. You don't have to dig through racks of clothing that are crammed into a space too small. I particularly like coming here for the jewelry and hats. What an incredible selection! On our last visit here, I found 2 hats that I couldn't live without and only spent $30. My husband also likes this store. He found a bracelet he liked and bought it for me. But really, he probably likes coming here so he can play with Scout. She's the cute pooch that runs around the shop. I totally thank Yelp for helping me find the new place! I was so disappointed when I saw the old location 'for rent'. There was no way! Indeed, no way. The new place is in a better location, it's a bigger brighter space, and it seems like there is so much more stuff. The place feels more organized. It's visibly larger and feels like a gallery, with the perfectly dressed mannequins and the soft loungy jazz coming from a record player. The men's section seems even further expanded, and is ordered by color. The furniture/dishwares are really cool too! Everything is so vintage in great condition, but I haven't even gotten to the best part- price. Everything is just as fairly priced as it was at the old place. Nice, vintage, often name brand shirts start at $10. Ties and belts around $8. Trust me. This is the place to go for cool, pretty unusual patterns and clothing. The owner is very involved in the community, so ask her about upcoming events, she'll probably have a few that might interest you. And don't worry, Scout is totally still there, and just as totally cute as before. read more

This store is a great addition to the eclectic and interesting East Walnut Hills neighborhood. It is a wonderland of vintage clothing and housewares which has been very carefully curated. Every time I visit I find something new and surprising. I recently stopped by and found Shawna pricing a collection of vintage bow ties and just had to buy one for my husband. I've actually not seen another vintage store in the city, aside form Casablanca, that has such a wonderful collection of mens clothing. The women's clothing selections range from early twentieth century to today, are of great quality, and are very thoughtfully priced. Overall the experience of shopping there is a delight. read more

This place is UH.MAZING. I was kind of glad when I went thru the first time that I'd left my wallet in the car! The owners obviously have an eye for beautiful vintage gear but even better, they really know how to merchandise the store! I love looking for vintage clothes, but oftentimes the stores are disorganized or very slap dash put together looking. This place is beautiful - everywhere you look is something totally lovely, laid out on an interesting display. Most of their clothes were out of my $ comfort zone (not much under $50 when it came to dresses) BUT you can see that what they charge is appropriate. If you want to drop some money on some very high quality vintage, this place is not to be missed. And I mustn't leave out the lingerie. I have also found some awesome vintage shirts and jackets for my boyfriend here, some of them were brand new!!
