Looks like I'm gonna have to jump on the band wagon with this one. 'Hi Ho Silver' (...Awaaaaay!!!) is by far one of the best jewelry repair establishments I have had the good fortune of coming across. I received a very nice bracelet from a high-end type of establishment. As nice & coveted as it is, this bracelet was a wee bit too short. I admit, I do have large hands, so my wrists favor a slightly larger bracelet length that the average bear (male) wrist. Sure, I could use the toggle closure and close it on my wrist ... BUT my hand would eventually start turning a not-so-attractive hue of blue-ish purple due to the lack of oxygenated blood flow. Not a good look, to say the least. I call the retailer of the bracelet and asked what it would cost to add a link. I was told it would cost anywhere from $350-400 and would take 8 -12 weeks for return. This is due to the fact that it had to be sent to the home factory in France for 'repair' or as they said, 'balancing' (ummmmm, whatever...). WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!?!??!?!? I just wanted a freakin link added. WTH?!?!? That said, I decided I was going to look elsewhere to see if I could find a better deal. To sum up my search, I didn't find anywhere that I would trust that the work would be properly done. Enter 'Yelp'... I did a few permutations of keyword searches and came across 'Hi Ho Silver Co.' in Ellicott City. Reviews, as you can see, are STELLAR, so my interest was peaked . Problem was - OH NO - Ellicott City on a Sunday?!?!?! Oh GEEZ! That place (while a beautiful hometown feel, reminiscent of upstate New York or the cobble-stoned streets of New England or quaint towns like Huntington Village, NY - it can become VERY congested on the weekends). However, ever single review was a 5-star ... so, I HAD TO check this place out!!! I hopped in the auto and made my way to Ellicott City ... dreading the potential traffic jammed streets. And once I got into town, it surely did not disappoint. While going into the village, I was part of a medium paced crawl of traffic- but i was moving. The traffic LEAVING the village, however, was at a complete standstill. Single-file all the way through .... YIKES!!! I have to get in that when I leave? Oh joy... oh rapture ... Ahhhh well, I thought to myself. I'm here now. I finally locate an OPEN space (yahoo!) and get out, throw on my shades and begin the trek ... I turn down the little street expecting some major store-front with a team of silver smiths in leather aprons, hammers, blow torches and welding goggles on to greet me. Alas, the location is actually this quaint little house. I only knew it was the 'correct' place bc of the address and the sign in the window. I walk in and there are some of the coolest pieces I've ever seen. It varies from vintage (to just plain old) and modern to very new & artistic. The selection ran the gamut. The music was familiar classic rock and I was just singing along until a gentleman (Will) comes out from the back with ... welding goggles and a leather apron on (I know... funny, right?!?!?) Anyway - he greets me and seems shy by nature. I tell him my scenario and wonders if he can help or refer me to someone that can. He looks at the piece, whips out a ruler, asks a few questions and says he can help. I then ask about some pieces in the shop and BOOM - the floodgates open and he starts talking about all the items and stories behind some of them, which were very interesting. This also told me a) he knows his shyt! and b) he LOVES what he does!!! TWO VERY BIG CHECKS, in my book!!!! PS - he's actually VERY funny - has a great witty sense of humor, which I appreciated. He makes several suggestions and explains the BEST thing to do would be to add extender links as opposed to adding another matching bracelet link (he said it would make the bracelet too long, which made sense). He goes in the back and says he'll see which would be most complimentary to the bracelet and go from there. He comes back w/ a few choices. I make a selection. He lowers his goggles, giggles and says, 'hey, try not to take anything while i'm gone, k...'? (LOL) and he retreats into the back. About 15 minutes later he comes back with my piece and it looks EXACTLY like it did with more length. The rings fit the bracelet's look / aesthetic PERFECTLY!!!! I tell him what a great job he did. He says, 'Yeah, I know...' (lol). Oh - and the cost was sooooooo much more reasonable than what Hermes quoted. NICE JOB! I will be going back to see Will for ANY jewelry repairs I have. I would recommend this place for making new wedding rings and for its small selection of antique and estate jewelry, but not for repairs. My sister and brother in law had their rings made here, and they're lovely - they have relief patterns of subtle celtic knotwork around the circumference and are white and rose gold. I also appreciate that you can browse some without being waylaid by salesfolk - I've never seen anyone here but the jeweler himself, who I honestly read as preferring to stay in the back away from people. I can sympathize with that and, for shopping purposes, actually prefer it. It's a little harder with repairs, though. Hi Ho Silver resized my wedding band once, and while some effort was made to make the altered area blend in with its surroundings (the ring is engraved), it was pretty obviously thinner in one spot. The repair was also relatively expensive - around $250 for about one size on an antique platinum ring. I believe that may have been somewhat more expensive because one diamond popped out while he was working on it. I was fine with this but recall that he spoke to me on the phone about it like it had really panicked him, as if somehow I should be soothing him or as if it was my fault it happened. It was a little eccentric but I was just happy to get my ring back, and I have a high tolerance for eccentric, too. Later, after I had a child and my hand stayed larger than it had been before, I tried to bring the same ring back to be sized again. The jeweler started going wide eyed and jittery as he looked at it, and finally handed it back to me and told me that the ring could not be sized again. I sort of blinked and said, 'er, what?' or something to that effect. He said that he used to take jobs like this but that he couldn't anymore, vigorously shaking his head, and said that it just could damage the ring and that it couldn't be done. I said that sounded... difficult to imagine, and that if it was a matter of trusting his judgement in making a try I wouldn't hold him liable for damage or anything. He just got more jittery and repeated that this wasn't the sort of thing he'd try anymore. I asked if he could recommend a place that might be able to help me, and he said that Smyth wasn't too shady, and might be okay. I was a little shocked, still. He said "it happens to lots of women, it's not just you" or something like that, which... okay. Wow. I took it to another jeweler who did a beautiful - and much better - job of sizing and re-engraving it without batting an eye for less money than this shop's first time sizing the ring, including replacing two cracked diamonds and also sizing my engagement ring. Nothing about impossibility. Nothing about it being a problem with my body and not their craft. Can't say I think I'll be going back here. read more

This is the one and only jewelry store - Will has customers for life, at least in my fiancee and myself! He custom-made my engagement ring, and then made a wedding band to match. His prices are incredible, and his work is of wonderful quality. He uses recycled stones, and I believe he may use recycled precious metals, as well. Note: he does custom gold/silver through wax casting. He also mentioned once that he lets people carve out their own jewelry, so you may want to check that out if you're interested. Fortunately, not only does Hi Ho Silver have an amazing selection of items both silver and made from other metals (gold, etc), but the service is pretty spectacular. I went in to get my sister's wedding ring cleaned and he offered to clean every piece of jewelry I was wearing. Then I started looking at, probably, every piece of jewelry in the store and he patiently answered questions and helped me try things on. I ended up walking out with an amazing necklace with a roman glass pendant on it. Found a perfect antique engagement ring with a delicate and beautiful pattern. The size was 1.5x too small but Wil did a nice job resizing it by adding more material to the shank. CON: small and not much selection. PRO: quiet and easy to shop without getting pounced on by sales people (at most retail jewelry stores). Amazing repair shop! I needed my badly broken engagement ring repaired. It had been "fixed" several times before (on the band), but never lasted. Will was able to take a good look at my ring and come up with some options to fix it. He didn't think all hope was lost and he quickly delivered amazing results! Only four days later he called to say that it was finished! He made good on his estimate, even though he needed to use more gold than he originally had quoted. He also threw in a diamond cleaning pen for me to use later to clean my rings!! The ring looks amazing and now I'm not worried about it breaking again! I found this place when reading reviews to find a good jewelry repair. Every nice thing I read about this place was true. I brought my gold anklet that needed repair, as well as a wedding ring which had lost a diamond. Will showed me another loose diamond and explained how it happened. While there I found a beautiful (estate?) yellow gold and diamond cluster ring in his shop for a VERY good price and he did a great job sizing it. All of his work was very good, he was very helpful, and he has some unusual pieces in his shop for decent prices. read more

A wonderful, family owned jewelry and jewelry repair shop. Will, the owner, is knowledgeable, experienced and friendly. He can custom make jewelry to your specifications or help you track down that perfect heirloom or antique piece. My husband came to will for my vintage engagement ring, which is perfect! Will knows his stuff! We then came back for our wedding bands. He found the most perfect antique wedding band for me. He kept his eyes open for months and knew I would love it. He sized everything perfectly too. He was a pleasure to work with the whole time. I also take jewelry to him for repair and resizing. One interesting thing is that I have gauged ear lobes and wear plugs in my ears. I take my metal plugs to him so he can resize the large flares on them. Great work every time! And reasonable prices. I had been here before just looking around, but when i was going to propose to my then girlfriend, i wanted to get something special. I've been collecting vintage, Victorian, Edwardian, Deco jewelry designed in the noble metals since I was in my early teens, as well as higher end costume jewelry. When I often shopped at the jewelry stores at Columbia Mall back in the day, all the jewelers sent me to Will to take care of any repairs I needed to my sterling collection. Specifically Will. In all these years, neither Will nor Hi Ho Silver have changed at all. This is old -fashioned Honest Business . . . personal attention, patience, creativity, hard work, where the Customer is King (or Queen, in my case) - one can scarcely find such a wonderful old shop like Hi Ho Silver any longer! Vintage and antique earrings are often not designed for pierced earrings; Will has done dozens of conversions for me - perfectly. Antique pieces usually have many issues - Will can repair them all. He has created sterling bezels for my ancient, irregularly shaped coins so I could wear these as pendants, repaired rings which were utterly destroyed. I buy stones from all over the world and Will sets them in gorgeous mountings. I really cannot recommend him highly enough. My daughters always bought my Mother's Day gifts from Will. I went to the shop after reading the reviews here and I was not disappointed! I was nervous about getting my engagement ring re-sized because it is an antique circa 1920s ring with a lot of filigree detail... and I just got it! After reading that he makes his own jewelry I felt he was up to the task. I went in around 12 and he helped me find my real size and said that I could get it some time during the week.To my surprise, a few hours later he called me back and said it was ready which was great because even though I had only been wearing it a week, I was missing it! It wasn't too expensive but I don't know very much about resizing prices and I was getting it sized down. Honestly even if it was more I wouldn't mind because he was a nice quiet man, he did it quickly and he knew his stuff. Once upon a time, perhaps 14 or more years ago, at the Alabama Highland Games in Montgomery, I purchased the most exquisite pair of gold and garnet earrings from Hi-Ho Silver, and Will was manning the shop that day, I wore those earrings several times a week for all those years, and then one hectic and fateful day at work, they accidentally wound up in the trash, (I figiured out what had happened in a hurry when I could not find them, but it was too late)..and I have been wearing the scarlet letter ...capital I for IDIOT ever since. That happened about two years ago. Last summer, I came upon the box and the business card for Ho-Ho Silver. It took me a while to get up my courage, but I called, decribed the earrings, and told my sad story. Will knew exactly which ones I had lost, promised to look in his OLD stock, and let me know. He didn't take long, and sent several photographs to confirm he had the right ones. Along with that he sent a photo of another similar style of garnet and gold. Though my originals did not come with the garnet, there was the same setting with blue topaz. I had him send me both...and I was thrilled. Recently, I had a piece of jewelry that I was no longer happy with. I did some research to find a small, local jewelry business and came across the reviews on Yelp for Hi Ho Silver. I could no longer deny going into this shop based on those reviews. Every reviewer was right. This was a great shop and Will is really nice and very talented. He listened to what I didn't like about my piece and helped me find a better setting. Within a couple of weeks, Will created a beautiful piece of jewelry for me that I now can't stop staring at! Not only that but the price was way better than other "bigger" stores were quoting me for off the shelf pieces.
