In the card game "Hi-Lo", players guess if a revealed card is higher or lower in value than a face-down card. We were recently dealt a winning hand here. Last Friday was a date night for me and Gayle, as we opted to try for kick ass meal out here at the Hi-Lo Club just outside Lakefield. The restaurant and bar was about a 30 minute drive from the family cabin on the East Shore of Spirit Lake (Orleans) and with a lot less traffic that any fine dining choice almost as far on West Lake Okoboji. Our only regret was that we opted not to go downstairs to the Speakeasy after dinner, where live music was in full swing. The only irritation (if that) was a fairly loud bride and friends dinner a couple tables over. But I quibble as Gayle and I thoroughly enjoyed our romantic evening together within our cozy booth. Here's what we ordered: - Bombay Sapphire Martini (Up/Olives) and then a Malbec (Gayle). - Mocktail (Cranberry Pom Spritz) and then a Sauvignon Blanc (Eric) - Filet Beef Tenderloin with Asparagus and Caesar Salad (Gayle) - Canadian Walleye with Caesar Salad and Wild Rice Pilaf. - Coffee (Eric) and a shared piece of Champagne Cake (See Picture). Our Caesar Salads and Gayle's steak were outstanding. My Walley was excellent, but I wanted more of what Gayle was enjoying. The cake was of course icing on our evening. Total tab? About $160 with tax and tip. Special kudos to our great (and very busy) waitress and the Prohibition-era atmosphere. We only visit the Iowa Great Lakes once in the Summer, so look for us to be back here next year. read more

Waited at the host's stand for a while - no one ever came over to acknowledge us. I never even spotted the wait staff once when tables were clearly full. All highs and no lows at the new Hi-Lo! Walking in we were met with an immediate cozy feeling and fancy Art Deco style that felt like a classic supper club with modern amenities. The ceiling had textured golden, metallic tiles. The walls were decorated with giant canvases of 60s persona. To the side of the entrance was an incredible large private dining room. There was even a coat check. We were greeted warmly and seated immediately on time for our reservation of eight. The bar area is large with additional high top seating, chandeliers, and a giant fireplace. The main seating area has 2 long tables and curved large booths along the sides. All were full and lively with all ages by 7 pm. The lighting was good with no phone flashlight required. The Hi Lo sign shone proudly. There was big band music in the background adding to the vibe. The bathrooms were by the entrance and clean with high quality paper towels. The old fashioned was strong with all flavors balanced and cool to sip in the environment. For apps we ordered ravioli, caesar salad, and truffle fries. All were great. The caesar salad was creamy with crispy croutons. The ravioli and truffle fries had good portions that could feed eight people. The beef filet, sirloin, and ribeye steaks were done exactly as ordered. They were very tender with a char tasting crust. The meat had a thyme or rosemary herb butter flavor. The filet had an additional au poivre sauce that was tasty and I don't think can be found anywhere else around the area. Both the mashed potatoes and mac and cheese were plentiful, buttery and melted in your mouth. The mac was baked with breadcrumbs on top. The chicken was juicy and the wild rice pilaf was cooked well; it had good texture with chicken, onion, and carrot flavor. The brussels sprouts came in a cast iron skillet and were tender with a slight roasted outside. Unfortunately, the dessert menu was a little limited. No desserts were ordered partly because there were only two choices. It would have been nice to have more variety in this part of the menu. Overall the service was happy, attentive, and subtle with always full glasses of water, questions answered, and the waitresses checked up on us multiple times. Each round of food and drinks arrived quickly. The owner even made sure we had a great experience too. We are very glad Hi-Lo came back and we will be coming back! read more

I live in Dallas, where steak is king, but you know where I've had the *best* steak? This Hi-Lo. The cocktails are amazing (try the expresso martini, you won't be disappointed and the staff are outstanding. Our waitress, Grace, made our dinning experience perfect. The sides are all delish! Especially the creamed corn and asparagus. You will love the decor...feeling as though you've stepped back to the rat pack era, visiting your favorite speakeasy. While some might balk at the cost, I've never been anywhere where the food is THIS good for this reasonable of a price. If you are visiting the area, go here, you won't be disappointed. This is a small town treasure! We come here every time we visit my family's hometown for a reunion. They have an awesome all you can eat "Fish Fry". With a buttery baked potato, coleslaw and yummy warm bread rolls! Also, a huge menu of other delicious foods to choose from including other all you can eat meals on different days which include steak and seafood. We had a party of 9 with a reservation last night and waited for over an hour in a tight hallway. Our bill was wrong three different times. We waited for our food for well over an hour and food was below average at best. The salad bar had mashed potatoes with no gravy or butter . Crab legs was tiny and the prime rib was served like roast beef with tiny silvers for 19.99 . Then no dessert on the salad bar . But our waitress was awesome ! Buyer beware with place! read more

This place used to be pretty decent but in recent years has lost is zazz. Food is now sub par and they jacked the prices up. Service is good but they know they are one of the few options to eat out at in Lakefield. Used to go to this place all the time with the Grandparents and even they avoid it now. Went there Saturday evening and ordered an appetizer with Crab in it, Lobster, and a drink. Started eating the Salad, then the waitress came to us and said, we are out of the crab, so we can't make the appetizer, and we don't have any lobster, and we don't have the drink you want. Wow! I know this is small town USA, but that was a bit of a surprise, that the waitress didn't know any of this before taking our order. Had a fairly nice steak instead. I have been coming to the HiLo for 65 years, and I have yet to have a bad meal. I think they always put out the best. We love the Monday night fish and Friday night seafood. I see they have some new pasta recipes that I am going to have to try. You don't go away hungry. The prices are in line. You can't expect the same prices as you had years ago. read more
