This iconic movie theatre was packed the evening before Thanksgiving. However, the friendly staff was handling the crowd with ease. We loved that they were showing the movie Planes Trains and Automobiles, a Thanksgiving classic. There is not a bad seat in the theatre. We love that they show the old concession stand clips with the dancing popcorn and candy. Even though the establishment is old, the place is clean and well kept. But, it still has that fun, nostalgic feel. read more

The High-Pointe Theatre is kind of a landmark in St. Louis. I've been going there for 60 years or so. The interior is a gem from times past and yet has been updated over the years to stay comfortable. The movie schedule is great, a step artier than the huge multiplex's. I've been going to the Hi-Pointe since I was a kid, and it's just nice to have an old fashioned theater still in existence. Large screen, large seating area, staggered seats, good sound system, friendly staff, and candy dishes in the lobby. I like that it's only a single screen theater, it not only reminds me of the old days but I don't have to worry about sound from a next door theater leaking through. The lobby and bathrooms have a fun collection of old movie posters and headshots, including one of my all time favorite movies - Paper Moon. The Back Lot is new and has comfortable seats, though not recliners. They show more artsy, indie films back there, or movies that have outlived the necessity for the larger seating capacity, and it's cozy. I think it seats 45 people or so. The only drawback to the theater is the bathroom location for the main theater. It's upstairs up a large flight of stairs with narrow steps. My mom hates going up the stairs, even after the film when there's time to navigate the steps. It's definitely a better/quicker trek than the bathrooms at Plaza Frontenac theaters but difficult for people with limited mobility. read more

When so many movie theatres are going hi-tech with reclining seats, food service at your seat, etc. It's such a relief to find an authentic movie theatre from the 50's when people went to the movies to actually watch and enjoy a movie. I'm from Northern California and this theatre reminds me so much of the Palo Alto Theatre in Palo Alto. I cannot say enough about the great experience I had at the Hi-Point Theatre. The place is very clean, restored, and just so quaint. Although I was stag (seat for one) this theatre is the perfect place to bring a date. Staff was super friendly and the popcorn was delicious and served with plenty of butter! read more

This is the best place to see a movie in town. Its a single screen cinema that been in operations for many decades (right next to the huge Amoco sign) I hadn't been here in a long time but came here a couple weeks ago to see "The 100 Foot Journey" and had an amazing time. Little did I know that this was the last night it was showing and the Hi-Pointe went all out. They had an Indian food truck out front along with tables set up, live music, and a drawing for gift cards to different Indian restaurants around town (I didn't win). Its easy to tell the people who work here love the cinema. The seats are comfortable and the screen is adequate. The concession stand has all the usual options in addition to beer and wine ($4/glass). They even have a small popcorn and soda combo for $5. Every Wednesday, 2D movies are $5 and 3D movies and $7.50. The only downside is the limited options of movies showing here as there is only one screen. They do rotate the films pretty frequently and sometimes have midnight showings of cult classics. Parking is available at the Lindell Bank across the street. Just be careful crossing the busy road. read more

The HI Pointe gets five stars because it's such a fun and unique cinema experience. They're committed to what they do, and they do it well. I really enjoy seeing movies here. It's unlike any theater I've visited. It is like stepping into a time warp, back to the 1950s. The upstairs bathrooms are a must-visit, if only for the free candy. Did I just admit on the internet that I eat free candy I find in semi-public bathrooms? Yes, I did. I do not want to write a typical review about this place because the Hi-Point deserves something much better. I wish I could hand them an award of AWESOMENESS with a gold seal like the ones you get in grade school. Hi-Point has loads and loads of character and has an amazing vintage feel. Its small and cozy and is not your typical theater. Its right down the street from me which is really convenient. I love its brightness and old school movie display feature on the outside. We came here to see Avengers (which by the way is the best movie EVER emphasis on the "ever"!!!!!) Anyways. We were waiting outside and it started to rain, they let us come inside and wait. The snacks and popcorn are dirt cheap and they have better options than the regular theater. They even have frozen custard!!! The people that work there are super nice and down to earth and friendly. I got to see Captain America sweep the theater and clean up popcorn from the previous showing. How cool is that??? The theater itself is surprisingly large for being such a small little building. I think they only have 2 screens. The seats were even comfortable and cushiony, who know how old they are but seriously I have sat in craptastic seats at fancy pants theaters and will take a Hi-Point theater seat any day over other seats There was just something so nostalgic about Hi-Point. I don't know if it was the cubed ceiling, or the 1970's green curtains. but I love this place and hope a lot of people don't come here. This is such a great movie theater; I really felt like I was stepping back in time once I arrived. In fact, it kind of reminded me of the movie theater on 7th Heaven in Glen Oak-is anyone else familiar with that? Anyway, parking was little confusing, but thanks to Yelp I was able to find out that they offer free parking at the bank across the street after 6. The only problem I had was crossing the street and dodging traffic. I felt a little like I was on "Frogger"! My boyfriend and I arrived for an evening show and were able to walk right up to purchase tickets, no line! We also treated ourselves to some popcorn and beer which we bought at the concession counter. Since this movie theater only shows 1 show it wasn't hard at all to know which theater to go into...we walked right in and found the perfect spot to sit. What I like most about this theater is that it is HUGE-seriously, there are plenty of seats available. Of course, I had to check out the bathroom while I was there! I went upstairs and I was so happy to see that they even offer some candy and mints for patrons! I am not gonna lie, I needed some tootsie rolls after eating all that popcorn! I grabbed a few to share with the boy and went back down to my seat. Overall, this was a pretty good experience for me. 2 theaters in 2 separate buildings so check beforehand where to go. There is a parking lot next to the "Hi-Pointe Back-Lot Theater" building that is directly behind the original Hi-Pointe. (Parking has always been a problem) The larger front building was newly renovated, but the movie was showing in the other building. The Back-Lot theater up a flight of stairs or riding the elevator. You can grab a soda, beer, cocktail &/or snack at the bar before heading back to the quaint 50 person theater. The seats are vinyl & not as comfortable as the newer chase lounges at other theaters. HOWEVER, this place shows more independent and cult classics than the larger studio based theaters. read more

I really love this theater! They also have a bar on the inside that serves tallgrass beer which is brewed in Manhattan, Kansas. And I am a Kansas State University graduate which is also located in Manhattan, Kansas! The atmosphere of the theatre is absolutely amazing. You just can't get this at any other normal AMC or big theater. I live near the HiPoint theater. So I love coming here whenever they have a good movie showing. Movie tickets are also very reasonably priced! Sometimes during the week they play an older movie. And it's always fun to go back in time and watch an old movie! Doesn't get better. A throw back to the past, family owned, retro theater which,when you look around, feels like your sitting in a 56 Turquoise Thunderbird! Well kept, clean, staffed with family and friendly help. The snack bars small but offered standard fare plus beer and wine selection that is actually very diverse. Two theaters including the new "Back Lot" housed behind the original was extremely well done architecturally. When I have a choice, I always support small local business. This is a no brainer. Located across from Forest Park, feet away from 3 food venues at the Cheshire, next to a Chinese restaurant and bordered on the south by the Hi Point Drive In for burgers, you can park, eat, walk and watch. This is a great theater showing mostly (burlesque, tron???) great indie type films. Yesterday I saw Today's Special there which was really fun. I enjoy almost all the movies I see here. Popcorn and soda is a bargain compared to what the chains charge. My only complaint is that the bathroom is far (all the way upstairs) so you miss a few more moments of the movie. Nutshell: nice theater and quality seats. What more do you need?! Worth a stop in. Finally made it in to the Hi Pointe for a show! It was a Monday evening and I'd been dying to see this one film...and to be in a movie theater, if I'm honest, for months now. I grabbed a parking space out back. And walked in about 15 min before showtime. You pay out front at the box office, walk through the magical doors to the concession stand, and them choose your adventure to the left or the right to enter the theater. It's an old style show house, so only one big screen, shrouded by velvet curtains of an non-descript color, and classical music playing in the background. Because it's covid times, they had every other row blocked off and required masks to enter the theater. Thank you, thank you, thank you. They do have some accessible seating spaces where a wheelchair could fit in with the rest of the row. The seats are pretty darn comfy. I'm not gonna call other theaters out...but y'all take note, Hi-Poite is On Point in the seating department. I was one of maybe 10 folks for this particular showing. The movie was good, but I'm more excited that I was able to finally catch a show here. I purchasedy ticket in person, which ran me $10. Tickets online tack on a $1 service fee. I'd highly recommend a show here and I will be back. read more

I'm a bit ashamed to say that, as a native St. Louisan, today was the first time I've EVER visited this little gem. It's not fancy, by any stretch of the imagination, but they get the job done - since all you're there to do is watch movies! Cheap matinee fix and CHEAP snacks! Today my daughter and I spent a whopping $17 for 2 tickets and a decent size bag of caramel corn, homemade Greek Biscotti (2 large size) and a cup of very good coffee). There's not too much to be said about this place, but overall, I had a great experience here! I called before hand to check on availability of tickets and easily got someone on the phone who was nice and helpful. The theatre itself was clean and well-staffed. The could use a sign or two for when you enter because it's not 100% clear where you go once you enter, but I ultimately found my way. The theatre has ample seating and a great sound system, but also has local charm and is great for seeing those movies that may not be playing alongside summer blockbusters. I recently moved to STL not far from Hi-Pointe and decided to check it out - I'm glad I did! This theater only shows a few films at a time, but that only adds to the appeal. Ticket prices and typical concession fare were about the same price as you'd get at any theater, but the Hi-Pointe also serves alcohol, making it a definite win in my book. The popcorn was also the best I've had at any theater, lots and lots of real butter on all the popcorn, not just the very top. read more

I was trying to put my finger on why I love the Hi-Pointe so much, then it occurred to me - they pretty much have all the charm of what movie theaters used to be. There is one movie playing, you buy your ticket, you buy your snacks, you sit down in the one theater and enjoy. Old is the new new! The Hi-Pointe's prices are so incredibly reasonable, you won't believe it. $5 per ticket before 5 pm and on Wednesday nights. As for the concessions, we got a medium popcorn, large soda and box of candy and the total was $11. Are you kidding me?!? That would have cost $314 at a multi-plex. Don't be fooled by the old-fashioned curtain when you walk in to the theater. Once it opens and you see the screen, you'll be blown away at the crystal clear picture and sound. My very favorite movie theater in St. Louis! I love that it's a neighborhood spot. I love that the same people are generally working the ticket booth and the concession stand. I love that the theater itself has no "bad" seat. The screen is mega big and I personally love sinking into the seats. Good Popcorn, One Screen, that Movie Vibe-thing, and even a beer if you need one. They have some how managed to hold onto a distinct sense of cool. Something special I used to feel, when venturing out for a movie. It's a perfect place for a date, with all the charm and nostalgia you're looking for, and a tiny dash of kitsch; including the small glass booth, with the teenage-kid selling tickets just outside the main entrance. Being a young college student, going to Hi-Pointe seems something of a leap back in time 30 years to, admittedly, a better place (or a better movie theatre, at least). Tickets are cheaper than you'll find anywhere in the local St. Louis area, and the popcorn is sooo good. Free refills on the large popcorn always sends me home sick but happy. Try the nutritional yeast they have on the concession counter next to the salt, it's a yummy cheddar substitute for popcorn and is really healthy. The only thing I don't like about the theatre is that the cute doggy usually snaps at me when I try to pet it, but one day we'll be friends. read more
