Of the two Landmark theaters, i vastly prefer this one. A) it's much closer and easier to get to B) usually not crowded -- for example I've never been turned away from a sold out show C) there's more for me to do/places I'd rather shop in the surrounding area. Back in the days of Moviepass (RIP), this was also one of theaters that consistently worked. I saw so many arthouse and documentary films T.T The only thing im not a huge fan of is center aisle seating. Just doesnt seem the best way to set a theater up. read more

Such a cute theater in the heart of St Louis! I enjoyed seeing the vintage movie posters they have on display and thought it was fun that almost all of them have some sort of a tie to St Louis. They also have wonderful doll displays, too! Many of the dolls relate to the Golden Age of Hollywood, which is so appropriate for a grand movie theater like this one. On your way in or out, you can take some time to stroll through town and check out the St Louis Walk of Fame for your own little taste of Hollywood in Missouri. read more

Tivoli is "Loop" royalty. A historic landmark located in the famous Loop area of St. Louis this theater is a well preserved classic. Beautiful fixtures, architecture & décor. The theaters aren't as spacious as modern theater seating but the Tivoli is perfect for an intimate set movie night. Not a lot of unnecessary traffic or overwhelming activity. This is a nice, older theatre. The manager is very friendly and seems to care a great deal about the theatre and its customers. Because it is an older theatre, they do not have stadium seating and that can be a little more challenging if a tall person decides to sit in front of you.....other than that, it's a nice place to see a movie (typically indie movies) when you're in The Loop area. read more

I have been in love with the Tivoli for decades. It is truly one of St. Louis' most sparkling gems. The atmosphere is that of a golden age cinema, and you can just see fancy dressed celebrities waking across the vintage tile floor and gracing the red velvet seats. I have been here a lot - for foreign movies, indie movies, and even mainstream movies. I love the annual International Film Festival, and have volunteered there. The staff and volunteers are so friendly and down-to-earth. They love film as much as I do, and it really shows in the care they take in making the Tivoli the best film experience you'll ever have. Park in the lot across the street for a couple of bucks so you don't have to drive around looking for a spot. Have dinner before the movie at any of the Loop's nice places, and wander down the St. Louis Walk of Fame before you enter the Tivoli's gorgeous lobby. The tickets are a bit pricey, but worth it. The snacks and drinks are reasonably priced. I only wish they had a transporter so it could be closer to home! read more

Fact: Independent films do it for me... much more than mainstream movies in the big theaters. They make me think more, feel more, realize more, and appreciate more... in fact, since I discovered my love for independent films, I literally cannot stop going to the Tivoli. The theater itself is gorgeous and deserves much appreciation for its historic value, and I love the old school box office in the front. I know there are sometimes special deals but I usually end up paying $9 for my ticket which I don't have any issues doing. Once inside, the history kind of takes you over again... there's a lot to look at. There's popcorn, candy and snacks aplenty, so make sure to stock up! I love that the actual theaters are pretty small. Some are bigger than others but I'd say they are mostly on the smaller side, which I really appreciate. Even though the seats are pretty much on the same level, just a slight slant, I never have trouble seeing the movie. Only on my last visit did I notice a little issue with the screen... looked like a spot in the middle got kind of messed up. Didn't take away from the movie, though. Last thing - I'm all for seeing movies alone, I think it can be relaxing to the max. However, some theaters are more comfortable than others to do this, in my opinion. The Tivoli is the perfect spot for that, and there are always tons of people watchin' flicks alone. It's a cool thing to do, don't you know? Go see something now! I love old theaters, I love theaters with character, I love theaters with charm and theaters with kick ass managers! Tivoli has all of that plus more. This review is for a service that the Tivoli provided for me. I was on a mission to find a theater in St. Louis that would let me rent out a screen and be able to play x-box. This was going to be a birthday present for my bf and for his friends. I contacted every theater, sent out emails to everyone in town and still I was not able to find a theater that could accommodate my request. Just as I was about to call it a day at work, I check my email and there is a reply from the Tivoli. I almost died when I read it. They just had new digital equipment put in which would also allow gaming so I was in luck. They will allow me to bring in my x-box, start playing from midnight until whenever and the price does not break my bank! Alan the manager who helped me with all of this was amazing to work with. He was really cool about everything and was also excited about the idea. They have never tried this out with an x-box before and being the gamer that he is, wanted this to work out just as much as I did. We went in for a test run yesterday and (HALLELUJAH song cue here) It worked! It appeared on the screen and there was sound and the wireless controllers worked. My bf is seriously the happiest guy alive right now, and I am the happiest gf ever thanks to Alan and the Tivoli for coming through with my bf's birthday present. read more

It's dark and classy. There are movie posters and collectibles everywhere. I was impressed with the size of the screen -- it must rival AMC or Wehrenberg. Great place for fine films, though the Wildey in Edwardsville would offer serious competition if STL-area patrons were willing to drive that far. The Wildey is a more recent renovation, neater and glossier in some ways. But the Tivoli has three screens instead of one. At the Wildey, you can stop in for a drink at the classy Encore Wine Bar. But the Tivoli allows wine and beer in the theater more freely than any other I've visited. Never have seen a Schafly beer bottle (or any beer bottle) in a theater cup holder before visiting the Tivoli. One little drawback to the Tivoli is often crowded parking. On a recent weeknight, I noticed the garage across the street was offering parking for $3.20 payable in advance. But, instead, John H. circled the block twice looking for a street space, and finally settled for a space in the large municipal lot on the north side of Delmar. On second thought, perhaps parking a half mile away isn't so bad, since there's plenty to explore in the way of shopping and food along the way. read more

Let's start out with some positive points: 1. I liked the movie I saw. 2. Great old theater and the architecture is incredible. 3. Good location, close to the true city and in a neighborhood that is alive with activity. Which makes for a fun-filled day or date night. 4. Well maintained and I love the fact that all the movie poster on display have a St. Louis connection. Now for the negatives: 1. Stale old popcorn and we were attending the first matinee of the day. 2. Prices were very high for a matinee show. 3. Young man selling tickets and working concession stand was not friendly. He was also wearing aviator sunglasses inside, I hope it was for a medical reason. If not, it was not cool. I like to have eye contact with the person I am conducting business with. I've been spoiled by other art houses for film, but the Tivoli Theatre is a St. Louis tradition. I remember it when it was a single screen, so I will be back to give them another opportunity. This is the coolest movie theater I've been to in St. Louis. It has a distinct look to it. I enjoy the clever captions for the movies on the outside marquee. On the inside, there are movie pictures everywhere. The screening rooms are relatively small. It's a nice, cozy place. The concession stand has popcorn...toasted ravioli...booze...Ted Drewes... What else do you need? The only thing that strikes me as strange is it doesn't seem that the staff likes movies. If you ask them about the movies that are playing, they don't have much to say. Although, some of these movies are internationally recognized and awarded, you won't be able to find these in mainstream American theaters. When I saw the first "creative" movie there, my initial reaction was "this pedestrian plot was certainly not worth my time and money. However, I gave it a chance and was able to enjoy several great movies. The last one was "Wild Tales" - Six short revenge stories involving distressed people. Conveniently located in the loop area. There's something about charming old theaters with that old world charm that really get me. Accompanying the facade tends to be equally charming old timers working the ticket booth and ushering people through the doors. The dolls they have in the display cases throughout the hallways can be a little disturbing, but other than that it feels like you're in a theater during another era. Like others have said it has a great selection of the most recent indie films and a solid concession that has all your snacking needs covered. Theater floors and chairs are kept in incredibly good condition and it was nice not having to worry about what kind of sticky mess I might ahve stepped into. read more

We came here to watch the midnight showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show. It was pretty fun. The prop bags were fun to have. I wish we'd been able to clear hear the scripted responses to the film. The Tivoli Theater is absolutely beautiful in its old-fashionedness. The interior of the theater's lobby is covered with old movie posters and other movie memorabilia. There's even a pay phone! I had almost thought those were extinct. A little past the lobby is a small concession stand where you can get snacks for about the same prices as other movie theaters. The popcorn, however, is different from most movie theater popcorn. It doesn't have that saturated-with-butter taste that you normally get. At first I didn't really like it, but as I ate more of it it started to grow on me. I saw a movie in the main theater, theater 1. It was huuuge. And very pretty. The theater looked more like it was the theater for an opera than a movie. There were beautiful designs etched everywhere and the chairs were upholstered with red fabric. They were also very comfortable. The only real negative I saw was that they didn't have much in the way of ticket discounts. So be prepared to pay the full ticket price unless you're a senior or are going to the very first show of the day. Other than that, though, I would definitely recommend this theater to anyone who's looking for a movie experience that's a little out of the ordinary. read more

Having lived in St. Louis for almost 30 years, I'm surprised this is the first time I've ever been to the Tivoli. I loved the decor, the concession stand and the theaters all felt like the older theaters I remember as a kid. The bathrooms were very clean and spacious, better than I expected. The only drawback and I know it's not an every day occurrence, the heat was out in our theater so we had to sit in the front row with a tiny space heater at our feet. It was 55° in there and by the end I'd the movie, we were freezing. I would definitely come back though and check it out on a warmer day. read more

The Tivoli is a Landmark theatre, so you can count on it for good indie films. Situated in the U. City Loop, it's in a great location if you're up for dinner & a movie... and if you just want dessert, the Tivoli has you covered--they serve Ted Drewes!! AND gelato from I forget where. But really--popcorn for dinner and frozen custard for dessert, wash it down with some beer or wine available at the concession stand, catch a cool indie flick and you've got a one-stop shop for date night. Nice. I really love this theatre--the staff is pleasant and efficient, the building and its decor are a welcome departure from the ubiquitous electric blue carpet and cardboard movie cutouts found at practically every multiplex and the popcorn is actually GOOD. This is on my list of cool and fun places to see a movie in St Lou. Parking is always a mess when you are on Delmar.... The ticket prices were very fair. They had wine and beer available, I am really digging that are doing that. The architecture of the building is amazing. The manager walked into the theater and introduced himself and welcomed us. He told us which movie we were watching, just in case we were in the wrong venue. They have three movie screens. This is not a place to watch a movie if you are short person, the seat backs are extremely high.....The bathrooms were very nice and clean.. I highly recommend this theater. read more

The Tivoli theatre is one of my favorite places to see a movie in STL. I love that it plays a lot of smaller budget pictures that I can't see anywhere else (probably the Tivoli's biggest draw), but I also love that this theatre will play revivals of movies that most don't get a chance to see on the big screen. I've seen several older pictures at the Tivoli, but I'll never forget the first: Rear Window. So amazing on the big screen, it was an experience I would never trade. The Tivoli has three screens all of which are larger than your typical multi-movieplex (the largest screen being wonderfully massive). Because of the types of movies that play here, the Tivoli also attracts a lot less children (which makes me happy). read more

I don't go to the theatre for 14 movie choices, Dolby Surround Sound, and huge stadium seating. It's a good thing I really like the Tivoli. They don't really have any of that (except surround sound). When I go to the theatre, it's because I actually know what I want to see, and it's usually stuff showing at the Tivoli. Indy. Arthouse. Documentaries. Foreign films. But, they keep their selections just close enough to the mainstream to entice a broader audience of St Louisans. This place is classy without being too eclectic. The main theatre is grand and the side theatres are great for experimental flicks or more intimate showings. The only downfall is when they put a main feature on the smaller screens. The Loop location is ideal, where you can take in a quick dinner from one of the dozen restaurants within four blocks (although there is a growing number of franchises) or take a brisk stroll past the many businesses, late-nighters, and street entertainers along the St Louis walk of fame, after the movie. The best thing of all about the Tivoli is the Friday and Saturday night showing of classic movies (Ghostbusters, Rocky Horror, the Goonies, etc.). If you are looking for good indy film in a great location, definitely check out the Tivioli. read more

The Tivoli Theater was opened on May 10, 1924. Over the course of the last 90 years, it's had it's up and downs but today, as part of a series of anchors to St. Louis' Loop area, it's clearly seeing some good years. The night of our visit (a Saturday), the theater was only a third full but as long as they don't need to sell every seat, that was a perfect number for us. The lobby was crowded enough that you got a Saturday night movie going experience while still moving around and having manageable waits in the concession lines. I'm a fan of wine and beer in movies - wait. I'm a fan of wine and beer at kindergartner's birthday parties - of course at a movie theater makes sense too. They have a larger menu too, although I was really looking forward to the tots they were out of. If you're a 90 year old business, you do not lose a star for not having tater tots. Sound and picture was great, seats were comfortable, service was good - no complaints, can't wait to got back. read more

While it isn't my favorite theatre in St. Louis, I dearly love the Tivoli and appreciate the slightly wider variety it brings to the area. I have an over-romanticized view on old theatres that have character, so the Tivoli is pretty high on my charts locally. Over the past few years, I've been a bit saddened by the movie selection that has its fair share of movies featured in the superplexes. I love the fact that they do limited time showings relatively often, rather than running a movie for every brass nickel it can conjure. While it isn't always convenient, it forces a higher rotation of movies to come through. This ends up creating the illusion of more than the few screens it possesses. I love the fact that St. Louis' International Film Festival is still gaining momentum, and the Tivoli's willingness to do odd hour shows is a tribute to this I think. The midnight showings are pretty fun. A group of friends and I saw a midnight 3-D John Holmes "feature" here several years back, which I think you could safely say, wouldn't run ANYWHERE else in this city on a real movie screen. As more of a bring-my-own-snack person, I can't say much about the concessions. I do still appreciate their mini-newspaper they have available out front that details what movies they'll be showing over the next quarter. It allows me to plan out my Tivoli adventures accordingly, without having to miss anything, even with the one week showings. read more

Daughter and I visited the Tivoli for a FREE French film, sponsored by Washington University. We were so glad we didn't know that the film would be THREE HOURS LONG on a Wednesday night because we would have missed out on a lovely Mommy-Daughter night. The Tivoli is truly a beautiful theatre. We loved how the rising velvet curtain gave a sense of ceremony to viewing the film. The seats were nice and comfy, a surprise given the age of the venue. The concessions offered a variety of beers and some basic Barefoot wine as well as the usual movie snacks. I wish I had been hungry because the Ted Drewes looked yummy. Parking was a breeze--I opted to pay $3 instead of trying to parallel park a van in front of an audience on Del Mar. Money well spent! The evening inspired me to get down to the Tivoli more often; well worth the extra travel time. read more

I'm surprised the Tivoli doesn't have more reviews than it does. The Tivoli is one of those something-special type of places that I love St. Louis for having. It's pretty wonderful to walk in and enjoy the classic architecture, the vintage posters, the movie memorabilia on display, the red velvet seats, and the general feel of the place. Not to mention they serve beer. The one thing that keeps the Tivoli from getting my fifth star is its personality. Maybe I've been overindulged by the neighborhood feel of Ragtag Cinema in Columbia, who knows. I want the Tivoli to engage with me. I don't want the staff to walk to the front of the theater and announce the movie title in monotone before walking away. It's a nice touch, but it's not enough. Take it a step further--talk about the movie, the director, or ask if we have any questions! Talk to me when I'm buying my tickets and tell me how "Melancholia" is amazing and I'm going to love it or how Lars Von Trier is a total nutcase. Anything! Independent and foreign films are a niche market, a community, and I want that community feel in an independent cinema. Two tips on visiting the Tivoli: 1. Go to the first show of the day on a weekday. It's $7, which for the Delmar location and the indie/foreign films they offer is, to me, a pretty good deal. 2. Don't get food! ALL movie theaters charge outrageous prices on food. Grab lunch somewhere beforehand, enjoy the Loop, and then visit the Tivoli. Then you'll be thinking you really got a steal. read more

That's what you're paying it to be :] I actually came here to watch Toy Story 1 & 2 in 3-D (yeah, it was an amazing experience!) and I was surprised this little old theatre could show the movie in 3-D so well (I thought their technology would suck or something). Nope, it was very enjoyable! I warn you that their concession food is a bit pricey, though that is where they try to make money too... And their Ted Drewes tasted um, old. freezer burn? Bottom Line: I wouldn't come here much for the usual stuff they show (but that is really just my personal interests, not really into watching those indie shows and stuff), but this is a cozy little theatre to visit. read more

I like this place. It has one beautiful main theater and two smaller ones. The big theater is standard and gorgeous and everything I want. The smaller side ones are relatively lame. However, I really like the movies this place shows. I've seen some really great movies here from Super to Tucker and Dale vs. Evil. My boyfriend and I also really love the midnight showings of older movies. We've watched Jurassic Park, Aliens, and The Princess Bride here. They've definitely been some of my favorite dates. Since they're a small theater and not a chain, I can understand why they have higher prices. I can't wait to watch the oscar nominated animated shorts here in feb or march or something! read more

I went to see Moonrise Kingdom here and, for the first time, got a seat in one of the smaller theaters. The guy selling tickets made sure I knew it was the smaller theater and asked me a couple times if I was sure that I didn't want to go to the showing a few minutes later in the large auditorium. He did the same thing to my friend a few minutes later; I really appreciated the gesture. (After waiting for said friend outside for 15 minutes, I think that he might be the friendliest ticket seller I have ever encountered.) So what's the point of my update? He didn't believe me that we were actually going to see "hot fuzz". He said simply, "this is too nice to be a movie theater." It was everything I expected and more. Probably one of the most beautiful theaters in Saint Louis, the Tivoli has a style of its own. Walking into the place is like walking into a time machine almost. The architecture, walls, floors, everything seems to scream early 20th century. It is dark and intimate in the lobby which just adds to the ambiance of the place. I believe there are maybe 3 theaters total here. My friends and I went to see the Steve McQueen film Shame which was in the main theater. So happy that the seats are low and large. I was very comfortable unlike other Landmark theaters (IE Plaza Frontenac) and definitely didn't feel like I was sitting on top of someone. Only real complaint was they don't sell booze on Sunday. Hence why we all went to back to Blueberry Hill after the film. After watching Shame, we all agreed we needed a drink. I've seen a few films here before and I have to say it is the place to come if you are going to see an Independent or Foreign film. I'll definitely be back, but probably not on a Sunday. read more

This place is a must-visit for any dedicated STL-area cinema enthusiast. This place, along with Plaza Frontenac, are where I had my first brushes with indie/foreign films. I owe a big debt of gratitude to these movie houses for turning me into the movie lover I am today. Obviously the Tivoli is way more pleasant to visit than Plaza Frontenac. It's a beautiful place with nice memorabilia, some good Schafly brews to pick from, a constantly high quality film selection, and an all-around good vibe. Lots of film festivals come through here, including SLIFF (St. Louis International Film Festival). Say what you will about Delmar Blvd. being overhyped, but the Tivoli could never receive as much hype as it deserves. read more

The Tivoli is the best cinema I have attended in St. Louis, bar none. The personality of the employees is spectacular. There is a pleasant, vintage atmosphere. The walls are adorned with all manners of movie posters and paraphernalia. The main auditorium is unspeakably elegant and the place (overall) overflows with class. Of the many times I've attended the Tivoli, here are a few of the films of seen: The Tree of Life (Malick), L'enfant Sauvage (Truffaut), and Breathless (Godard). The special events are spectacular: midnight screenings of cult films like The Room, The Big Lebowski, and Rocky Horror Picture Show, as well as classics like Casablanca. And let's also not forget that The Tivoli also hosts the films made in the annual St. Louis 48 Hour Film Project, which, might I say, is always the event of the summer season. The Landmark Tivoli Theater is an absolute joy. The perfect movie theater for true cinema lovers. read more

For some reason (maybe because I am in love with The Chase and The Moolah theaters) I oftentimes forget about the Tivoli and years may pass between visits. This past Saturday I was lucky enough to see a screening for the Pruitt-Igoe Myth documentary at the Tivoli and it was such a pleasant experience. The day was cold and rainy so when I initially saw the line outside I was concerned but it moved so quickly that we were inside getting our food in no time. We got popcorn to share and 2 beers which of course is great but really, who can go wrong with popcorn and beer? The only thing that was a slight annoyance was the cashier at the concession stand kept trying to upsell me on everything. I have worked in retail for enough years to know that he was probably told he "had" to do it but sheesh I can see you offer Ted Drewes from where I order and do I really need a soda if I just ordered a beer? Since I did not want to be doing the potty dance from my seat in the middle of the movie, I politely declined his eager attempts to upsell me. Besides that, the rest of the experience was wonderful. The seats were comfortable and spacious enough, the snacks delicious and the movie was incredible. I am so thankful that the Tivoli gives us the opportunity to see more obscure, independent films. read more

This is absolutely my favorite place to go see a movie. If you love movies, you will love the Tivoli. First of all, their movie offerings can only be compared to Plaza Frontenac's theater. They only show high-class, quality and generally independent flicks here. If you're looking for mainstream drivel, look elsewhere. And to add another positive to my list, they recently showed a completely independent movie that was made on Mizzou's campus for one evening. I thought it was great that they allowed their venue to be used for a showing. Plus, I just love the atmosphere here. All of the old movie posters, the figurines displayed in glass cases, and the magestic ceiling in the theater itself just takes me away. It really is a St. Louis landmark that should be on anyone's list of places to visit. Another plus--they support local businesses by serving Schlafly and O'Fallon beers along with Ted Drewes ice cream. Awesome. A friend pointed out to me that every poster inside the Tivoli (the walls are covered in them) pertain in some way to St. Louis. Famous actors that grew up in the Lou. Movies that were filmed in the Gateway City... Yeah, they're showcased in poster format inside of the Tivoli Theater. What I love about this place are the surprisingly comfortable seats and a breathtaking main theater room. You get that feeling of nostalgia just walking into that place. If you decide to check out the concession stand, take note that the Tivoli uses REAL butter on their popcorn. It might be a nuance to most, but it's heaven to me. I suggest not getting a large popcorn in fear of cardiac arrest... But in the event of butter-induced heart attack, it just might be worth it.
