The refried beans and rice tasted almost as good as my grandmothers use to cook. Not quite, but close! The carnitas tasted really good, the only issue we had was it was a tad dry. We talked with one of the owners, Max, and we chatted about all the work it took to revamp a space that had been vacant for years. Max was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about hookah and wants to turn his space in a community third space with lots of events. On my more recent trip, the service was terrible and the food was delicious but overpriced for what we were served. I think the bartender had friends there the night we visited because she talked to another couple sitting next to us at the bar and largely ignored us except when we flagged her down. We ordered the vegan drumsticks, and were surprised to only get three--they were not very big but one of the most expensive appetizers on the menu. They were really good but I won't pay that much to get them a second time. We were going to order an entree, but it took so long to get the server's attention that we asked for our check and went somewhere else for dinner instead. Then I noticed a discrepancy between the beer price showing on their beer list and what we were charged. I tried to tell another person behind the bar about it and, as it turned out, he was the bar manager and said he doesn't deal with checks and we'd have to talk to the server about it.
