I'm not the type of person to leave a bad review if I don't have the best time somewhere. However, I've never been treated so poorly at any bar, restaurant, or event venue as I was at Hi Tone. The owner and staff of the bar were extremely rude and condescending to our entire party. We fully intended to purchase drinks and leave large tips for bartenders, but Hi-Tone lost our money and we will be telling everyone we know not to come here. read more

I love Hi-Tone relocated & Incorporated itself in the Sears Crosstown area on N. Clevland adding to the neighborhood & offering those close by a wonderful place to drink or grab a simple meal. The only thing I hate would be the parking. Not enough spots. Other then that I enjoyed myself when I came in over Christmas for the ho ho ho burlesque show. It's nice they offer a small bar area on one side for non smokers & the show area on the other side for smokers like myself. But anyways I loved how the show area was expansive for their venue size. Their stage was reasonably sized & positioned for the audience to get a good view of the show & the lighting adjusted right for the acts that perform. The sound system set up was arranged right as the quality throughout the place sounded fairly enjoyable. I haven't tried their menu selection yet. It looks like they have a reasonable selection of food to enjoy along with the entertainment to follow. I'm gonna enjoy it tomorrow when I take my friend out to tomorrow nights performance of Keith Paluso. I finally made it to Hi Tone. When I walked in downstairs they asked nicely if I was here for music or comedy then directed me back outside to the stairs around the back for the comedy show. When I approached the metal stairs I was a little skeptical about what I was getting myself into. I really enjoyed the atmosphere inside. The host was very funny and the show was pretty good. The final act with Chad Hays was definitely the funniest. The last interactive but is a must see. The food. Oh em gee. The burger was one of the best I have had in town. It was juicy and full of flavor. I can't wait for the next one. The fried pickles are in the top 3 I have ever eaten in my life. They were not overly salted like many are. The pickles were chips with the right amount of breading that were perfectly crispy. The tacos and tenders looked good as well. I went here for the first time for their open-mic comedy night and it was amazing! The energy in the place was very laid back and everyone kept the laughs going. I can't wait to stop by for other events! This is my new spot! Also, the bathrooms are very clean and it's in an open spot so no one feels uncomfortable! They're also UNISEX for those wondering! As far as parking is concerned, I understand what people mean by there isn't enough parking; however, the strip nearby is empty for the most part and it only took a few steps to get to the building. The new HiTone is finally open! The new facility is a huge upgrade from their previous residence. They have full Covid precautions in place and the staff is making sure patrons have the safest experience possible. But the food! We tried the loaded tots, the fried pepper jack cheese and the Nutbush hot chicken. The tots were definitely my favorite. They're loaded with cheese, chorizo and maybe rotel? This is bar food at its finest! We will most definitely be back for a show in the future and continue to order food to go whenever we can. read more

I came here for the opening night act of the Memphis Comedy Festival. It was my first time to this area and honestly it was a bit sketchy. Thankfully there was tons of parking available in the back of the building and a security guard who directed me on how to get into the Hi-Tone Bar. Once in, the staff were super friendly but I wish someone had told me how smoky the rooms were going to be!! I'd worn one of my better jackets and the smell of the smoke really lingered on and I'm going to have it dry-cleaned. Venue wise - it's a lovely space, if a bit faded. The walls are covered with a mix of graffiti and band posters. There were a couple of old couches, ones that might be more apt for dorm rooms, but I think that might be the nostalgic nature the Hi-Tone might be going for atmosphere wise - a bit like a college dorm feel but definitely geared more towards folks whose college years are in the past. I like bars that book live music, so Hi-Tone is a place that I really dig in Memphis. There's a diverse roster of acts playing. Plus the Hi-Tone has ping pong tables. Who doesn't like ping pong? Sure enough, history showed that the venue, while recently re-opened, stood well on its own as a reason to visit. We listened to Handsome Jack from Buffalo and Canaan from Texarkana while waiting for Slow Season (and Memphis' own Dirty Streets)...and though lightly attended (maybe because it was Bonnaroo weekend?), the bands filled the space with righteous, infectious groove lines. Breakdown and setup were efficient. Bar service was quick. Bathrooms are more than respectable. Price was a reasonable tenner for four rock-solid acts. Smoking OK on the bar side, but stub 'em out in the music side. We didn't go wrong. I doubt you will either. Check the joint out! read more

While traveling through the states, I caught a show here. One of my favourite bands at the time, The Hold Steady. Being from a small province in Canada, it's very rare that a band I love comes to play shows. This venue was amazing! Small enough so that you can be close to the stage, but large enough so that I wasn't stepped on a thousand times. In my city it is also very rare that a bar has a parking lot, typing that now, it makes sense that they don't. Drinking and driving isn't really the cool thing to do. Luckily, I had a DD and so the parking lot was a plus for me. read more

The new hi-tone is great! Upon entering there is the "lounge" part, seperate from the two different rooms where bands play, where you can get tasty iced down canned beers and cocktails! Even if there is a band playing you can still come to just the lounge part and not pay a cover. The new bar is MUCH nicer and features a beautiful wooden handmade bar covered in rock posters! It's open every day at 5. Of course, pingpong tables still in the back and tons of great bands! The sounds in the new room is GREAT also! One of the best things about the new hi-tone is the FOOD! The owner brought on ex-cozy corner pit boss RIchard to take care of it! And take care of it he does- every day you can see him manning the giant bbq grill out front! He makes the BEST tacos I've ever had- smoked pork, beef or chicken with cucumber, squash, cilantro, bbq sauce and cilantro! Completely addicting! He also makes vegetarian ones- last week he had grilled broccoli and TURNIP GREEN tacos which my veggie boyfriend loved! He's also got ribs, wings, bbq sandwiches and whatever else he decides is fitting for the day. If you're lucky he'll have the chili! Hi-Tone is an awesome, awesome place to see live music! The only thing that makes me a little hesitant is how smoky it is on the inside. I know in the main band area you aren't allowed to smoke, but the other room is so dang smoky it still filters in quite a bit. This probably doesn't bother most people, but my eyes are just absolutely ridiculous and can't handle it :(. Overall, they have a lot of awesome people come out and play, so they are definitely doing something right :). read more

Hi Tone is one of Memphis's most popular places to go see live music. They have musical performances almost every day of the week. They used to be on Poplar. Sadly, I never went there before, even though I'm from this area. I have no idea why. Fortunately, they reopened on Cleveland, near the old Sears Crosstown. We were driving around looking for a bar to go to, when we saw Hi Tone. The bar is small, and has that neighborhood feel. They have a few beers on tap, some bottled beers, and some liquor. I went with the whiskey water. The prices are inexpensive (Memphis standard). On this visit, they had a buffet of smoked meat for $10. We had already eaten dinner, or I may have been tempted. And we were there near closing time. The bar tender was super friendly. I will definitely return. We didn't see the band, because it was near the ending time. read more

Saw a show here that was really good. The venue was just OK and seemed to be an exercise in "how few dollars can we spend and still have a live music venue." The biggest ding is the stage is WAY too low and in a corner by the entrance to the room. I'm 6' tall and still couldn't get a clear view of the performers head much less what they were playing. They have the headroom to elevate the stage to give patrons a better view but didn't utilize it. The 2nd ding comes from the jet engine/pressure washer hand dryers in the men's room. You could hear them throughout the entire room. It was loud enough for a performer to comment about it. FIX THIS!! 3rd ding is the door to the music room enters into the room at the front beside the open stage thats not tall enough. Its a bottle neck and then you have to navigate through the crowd thats already in there. In their present configuration they could block it and cut another opening further back and enter in the middle of the room. All in all everything mentioned can and should be fixed. It was poorly planned and likely due to trying to use existing fixtures and not gutting the space and starting over. Other than that everything was OK. Area was well lit with ample parking and the employees were friendly enough its just a horrible use of the space they have. read more

Labor Day weekend and the Reggae bands were great. The festival was from 5p-2a. There were various bands. Most of the room was standing and there were very few seats, but it was a good time. They served some food and had several types of beers to choose from. Parking was limited because of the amount of people, but not horrible. A nice time and I will be going back! read more

Great place to see live music!! The new ownership is amazingly accommodating to performers and clientele alike. Bathrooms are cleaner than any similar venues, bar staff is knowledgeable & welcoming, & there is plenty of parking in the back of the venue. There seems to always be something fun & new going on at Hi-Tone; from Goner Fest, random food trucks, & even the city's first Grilled Cheese Festival! The new Hi-Tone is awful. My performance troupe has now paid a ridiculous amount to use this venue twice and been treated horribly each time. My troupe and other performance troupes in town had used the previous location multiple times with very little trouble, but the new one is poorly run and has nothing to recommend it. Both nights of our shows were double-booked. The first time we were forced to rush through our show and rushed to get our tables and chairs and dressing area cleaned up for an event that didn't end up starting for an hour after we finished. The second time we were after another event and were told it would be completed by 9:30 so our doors could open with a show at 10:30. That event did not end till 10:30 and it was nearly another hour before the Hi-Tone employees could be bothered to clear out the room so our show could begin. As a result, audience members there to see our show left and we AND the Hi-Tone lost out on a good bit of money thanks to their total ineptitude and lack of respect for a group paying to use their space. I will never set foot in this facility again and will never ever recommend it to anyone and definitely plan to tell anyone who cares to know exactly how we were treated. read more

The Hi-Tone is one of those hidden gems of Memphis. I have visited the Hi-Tone several times in the last few weeks for metal/rock shows of up and coming bands. I have been 100% satisfied with my experiences here. First, who else consistently brings decent metal bands to Memphis???? Total score in my book regardless of anything else. Second, the staff is friendly here and seems responsive to anyone behaving badly. Another point in my book, especially considering I may visit this place by myself on occasion. The drinks are also decently priced and I did have a badass margarita here once (total surprise). Also, the parking is well-lit and free. It is a no-frills type of place where I feel comfortable coming when I'm a bit bummy and even when I'm a little more dressed up! Certainly has a come as you are feel. I also appreciate that there is no smoking in the concert room. Looking forward to more fun times at the Hi-Tone! read more
