Came here for a wrestling show with my elderly friend who is a disabled veteran and the door guy was on some power trip or something. He demanded that my buddy (who CLEARLY has a grey beard) show him his ID. If this doesn't indicate over 21 then I don't know what does? My friend had a beverage with him and this door nazi wouldn't let him bring the drink in despite the fact that the door nazi allowed others to bring in their drink before we arrived. Do not like a place that treats disabled elderly veterans like this. I expect this in Austin not in "military city USA", will not be back. read more

The drinks are really cheap here and I highly suggest trying the pickle shot. Anyways, on a given night you might find some cutie pies here. I'm into Indie looking chicks so I'll usually come here to see if I can get acquainted with some--although some of them may seem pretentious at first. Oh, I've made it a rule not to buy random chicks drinks from now on unless they're a friend or a gf. I'm not Bill Gates, and honey, you're not all that. lol. Visiting my brother here in San Antonio and decided to go to a show (since we rarely have bands come to Hawaii). $3 cover for four bands?! I'm amazed! Tried their famous pickle shot. I didn't even know a concoction like this existed....Interesting...but delicious! My boyfriend loves pickles so he was very stoked. They have tons of cheap drinks...if I lived in the area, I'd probably frequent this place. read more

Checked this place out on a Saturday night. Simple, low key, $2 cover. Pretty cool crowd. Food available at the front. Seating outdoors and indoors. Great drinks! I had a chamoylada and they had a yummy mango brew from Ballast Point Company- great menu options! I loved the mix of music, mostly hip hop/r&b from the late 90's, early 2000's... what I've heard to now be "classic jams" according to the youngins. Outdoors, there is plenty of seating and cumbia music. The venue itself had a pretty fresh Chicanx vibe, including the C/S on the wall. I really liked it all! I'll be back again. read more

Very open , chill and uniquely shaped locale! Its on the neat corner of St Marys and Josephine Street and has a very interesting vibe to it. A tall bar and amazingly affordable cocktails and cheap beer! Sign me UP! I got a cold glass and a smile when I Ordered it too! Everyone there just seemed like they wanted to relax and have a nice time. Something that everyone can appreciate! With out a doubt this little place that had two awesomely friendly bartenders one of which was playing the drums with a drum stick and a spoon! Hi Tones is a place to get a cheap drink, enjoy some music, and see your friends. The casual atmosphere is nice. Their patio was recently fixed up, with new tables and plants, and is smoking friendly. Two of the signature shots that these guys created made it to The Current's Best of SA signature shot list. This is a great little speed bar. My favorite thing about their drinks? Real juice, not from a gun, in your drinks. read more

Came here with my husband. He introduced me to their pickle shot. I was impressed. Especially with the little piece of pickle at the bottom. If you love pickles, you MUST try it!! Then, I tried the pickle shot with chamoy... wow!!! It Fing delicious! I thought nothing could top that. WRONG. My girlfriend and I went to this bar on a visit to San Antonio and it's now one of our favorite bars! The drinks were cheap, the vibes were great, and the bartenders were friendly. We really appreciated their embracing of Tejano/Chicano culture through their drinks (La Raspa was soooo good) and decor, which is something you don't really see as much in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, or anywhere really. I will say it is very crowded and hard to move around, but that's part of the fun. read more

Went to Hi-Tones with a friend to see several Nirvana cover bands on the anniversary of Kurt Cobain's death. I actually had a great time! The bands were all very good. The crowd was a mix; older, younger, grunge, not-so-grunge, everything in between. I loved the decor, quite unique & beautiful. Lots of old mirrors and old pictures and paintings everywhere. They had some unique shots for sale, I recall that. Some kind of pickle shot everyone seemed to rave about. Of course, I don't care for pickles, so I can't comment. The place is small, so on a busy night, you can't be shy. But, there is a nice outside area with picnic tables to relax & catch your breath. read more

Pulled up to this place and it's kinda shady looking. We went inside and it was really dark. Way too dark to see anything! It has a basement/attic type of feel too it. They did have really good shots. 2 for $3, you can't beat that an they tasted really good. Not sure how much alcohol they had in them cuz you couldn't taste it. Thy have a decent outdoor siting area. They people here are kinda strange. I probably won't come back but the drinks are really cheap. I got a margarita for $3.50 and it was pretty good, again not sure about the alcohol content in it. read more

Wish they didn't allow smoking in their outside area, makes it really uncomfortable for non smokers. Be careful when you order, if they think you're drunk, thrill cut you off and threaten to throw you out. Was a little bit if a mood killer. The drinks are good though! Especially their shots. This place is great on fridays. New to the bar scene and have been here about 4 times. Must try pickle, chamoy, and paleta shots only 2$!

For the last 2 years there has been big changes in hitones. I started coming here when it had just opened, it used to be quiet with practically no one in sight, word of mouth got around and now it's literally elbow to elbow mayhem. Its incredibly crowded at times inside and they frequently have to close their doors allowing one in as one leaves type of thing. The drinks though are amazing and very cheap. Try their Mexican inspired shots and drinks, it's what gave them their popularity. The music is good most of the time, sometimes a food truck will be parked outside, there is usually a cover and they made a recent change by adding a restroom outside to cut down the insanely long lines for the restroom inside. Its divey with a good mix of characters. Definitely worth checking out. read more

The chamoy shots here are the best! Every once in a while they have a bad dj but for the most part an cool time. Super cheap drinks! This is a super hipster place to hang out so sometimes it's a weird place to hang out, but the prices are so worth it. I had been going for years and stopped but I recently went back and seems like they got a new sound system. Which is great cause their old one was Terrible! Decent dive with a decent beer selection at good prices. The bar tenders have always been cool, but the bouncers are consistently assholes. I realize that's their job, but I am still a customer.
