The first time I came here, I felt right at home. The atmosphere is great, and the beers (or liquid deaths if that is your jam) are always cold. Punk and heavy metal are always playing both inside and outside the bar. If you're a horror movie fanatic, the TV inside the bar is always playing horror movies. If there is a band scheduled to play that night, pray you get your drink before the inside gets packed because, boy does it get packed! Other than, the bartenders are cool and give good service. This moody bar is the perfect stop on the Saint Mary's strip. Quietly tucked away in a side street, if you don't know it's there you may just miss it. The drinks are cheap and quickly served. Best metal bar in town, hands down, and I don't claim that lightly as I am a born & raised San Antonian who LOVES metal music. This is the best place to come for cheap drinks and a chance to hear a local or traveling (or combo of both!) band you may not have heard of. There is plenty of seating outside to have a group of 6-8 people sit down and hang with you. As this place gets packed throughout the evening, it might be standing room only, especially if a band is playing inside. Girls with heels? Beware as there is cobblestone up and down the walkway into the bar (inside). You don't want to get your heels stuck, so just wear some Chucks or Vans when you come here. It's a chill space and lots of cool people around to chat with. They sell pizza and it slams! There is a small order window for Ghost Town Pizza which make personal pizzas within 10-15 minutes. I highly recommend grabbing a slice or after grabbing a beer + shot combo for $7. If you are brave you should ask them to add some Ghost sauce on your slice(s) or pizza. Parking is in the neighborhood that surrounds Faust so be sure to come early and don't block no one's driveway, guey! read more

Came here on a Friday night. Wasn't the vibe my friends and I were looking for, but I was able to get a $5 cucumber margarita that was out-of-this-world delicious. It was super packed all around the place, but we were able to grab a seat at a small table inside and sit for a bit before continuing our bar hopping. Very hipster, very laid back, but awesome drink specials with friendly bartenders and cozy interior. I'll most likely make a pit stop here every time I go down to the strip. There are two important takeaways from my trip to San Antonio. #1 Alcohol is cheap everywhere you go in this town. #2 Many people here do not know what vegan is. What it means. Or how to pronounce it. So the fact that we were able to find straight up vegan food at a bar that served Texas-sized drinks for cheap is mind boggling to me. The outside of this place looks like Patrick Swayze should be standing in the doorway with cutoff sleeves. The inside looks like an episode of True Blood. I loved it. My cucumber margarita was giant and delicious with a spicy salted rim and was so cheap that I actually thought the bartender made a mistake when she told me the price. Awesome. We ordered our vegan eats at a tiny window outside. A short time later we picked up the Cajun spiced seitan, rice, beans and slaw and sat at the bar happily munching as we marvelled at our drinks and the interesting punk music that filled the small bar. Faust is scary in a good way. It has a demonic theme with lots of spooky kitchy decor, and metal is constantly playing. If you're not into those things, I'd stay away. If you're into those things (or at least amused enough to tolerate them while you drink), you should go! A couple of things have changed in the last year or so. The *excellent* southern style food is no longer there. Now, it's just a place to get cheap cocktails and other inexpensive drinks. Also, the drink prices have gone up a little. The $5 cocktails are now $7 cocktails, but they're still really nicely done. No fancy glasses, of course. Even though the music and vibe are spooky, the people tend to be less creepy than at your average bar. People aren't really there to hit on strangers or make a scene. Everyone's laid back. The only weird variable is what will be playing on the TV when you come into the bar area. Sometimes it's been goofy cartoons that look hilarious while playing alongside metal. Sometimes it's been a gory horror film that I really didn't need to see. (For real, Faust, I know it's a metal bar, but I think that we could stand to dial down the violence these days.) That's only been on a random weeknight when few people are there though. I'm just warning you in case you scare easily! One of my favorite things about Faust is that you can go around to the back of the building, where a row of tables are set up next to twinkling lights. It's (dare I say?) rather romantic. read more

This place is awesome! I don't usually like so called dives but actually enjoyed this small quirky spot quite a bit. It's located in a house like setting tucked away in a very quiet neighborhood. The outdoor patio is quite nice but be careful of the mosquitos. I tried two drinks: Moscow mule and cucumber margarita. Both were delicious! I have to say I was mostly impressed with the cucumber margarita. I don't usually like margaritas b/c they are strong. But that cucumber margarita was deff different than what I had before. It was so refreshing and tasty! And it certainly wasn't weak either. I'd totally get a few more of these again next time. Yum! The best part? It's hands down the price! It was so cheap that I almost couldn't believe it. I think mine was about 7-8 bucks for two drinks. Seriously?! Heard they also offered some food on the menu. We stumbled across Faust Tavern last weekend after a stop at Cullum's Attagirl. I wasn't really sure what to expect, since I thought they served food, but that seemed to be more from the little window (can't remember what it's called) and not from the actual bar. It's Sunday night and me and my friend are hungry...specifically for pizza. It's like 11 at night and we're determined to find pizza some way, some how. We find this place on yelp that closes at 3am so we decide to make the trip despite our 8am class the next morning smh. When we pull up to Faust we weighed our options before we got out. I was giving the neighborhood some serious side eye action because it was clear we weren't in the UTSA area anymore. We saw some stray cats around and it being a Sunday night, there weren't a lot of people nearby so I was a little worried but we went in anyway. We walked up the steps and there were a few people sitting out where the benches under the decorative lights. Inside the friendly bartenders made me a long island as we waited for our pizza. You can buy the pizzas by the slice but we just got a whole pizza that came out to be about 13 dollars I believe. This pizza had to be the CHEEZIEST pizza I've had, the pictures certainly do not do it any justice. Plus is was as good as it looked, the slices we couldn't finish we took home and tasted just as great reheated. I was super happy I tried this place out, I've been looking for a late night place in San Antonio that offers food and a chill/comforatable environment. If you want to try a place that isn't like a clubby, bar type scene then you can really appreciate Faust Tavern. Here's a little story about my embarrassing first visit to Faust. I fell. I nearly fell right into the arms of the ID checker. Then I recovered, and fell again three steps later. It's a dangerous journey into Faust, y'all. But, seriously. There are cobblestones. Once I regained my composure and made it safely to first picnic table I could stumble to, I was happy to be there. I hope they'll have me back. Twinkle lights are streamed across the outdoor "beer garden" type area creating a really romantic yet casual vibe. Just saunter on over to the tiny window and order your delicious pizza by the slice. Since it was my first time I wanted to try two different varieties, but in the future, one slice is definitely enough. In addition to the regular varieties, it looks like they typically have a special. That night it was a white variety, but they were already sold out, so it must've been good. Pizza comes out piping hot, with a sturdy crust and bubbling cheese. That particular night, we weren't interested in drinking anymore (remember the falling debacle?) so I was delighted that you can get iced water from the pizza window, but if you are interested in other beverages, they have a bar inside. I've been dying for a better late night food option than that sad excuse for a pizzeria near White Rabbit, and Faust certainly fits the bill! read more

Faust is my neighborhood tavern. Yeah, hipsters abound, BUT everyone is always welcome at Faust. We all know hipsters can be a bit aloof, but the staff here is friendly to everyone, regardless of mustache status. It seems Faust's management takes care to screen out applicants with an inability to suspend their trademark hipster detachment and snarkiness. But the proof's in the puddin, so I brought a very mixed bunch of my co-twerkers over there for a few drinks and a bite to eat. Our party consisted of a hodgepodge of old folks, nerds, conservative types--plenty of non-hipsters, and everyone was treated equally. We stayed for quite some time, and actually kinda took over the joint. A dude with huge spikes sticking out of his jacket chatted with us for a bit--it was pretty cool. Anyway, if you don't already know from the other reviews, Faust is a unique and savvy addition to the strip. They specialize in brandy, cognacs, and $2 Lone Star, and they do a bit of mixology as well. You can also get cheap "bro shots" and microbrews in bottles. No taps. As for food, they serve a pretty decent slice of pie. Definitely perfect after several drinks. And they do it until 4am. Not bad. Taco truck down the street used to be the only late-night option around here. Not so any more, ese! And the menu is expanding. I dig the vegan chili, which is offered on select nights. Fried mushrooms and buffalo wings have also been making appearances on the chalk board lately. So get some friends together and go check it out. Pizza No More! Faust Tavern has dropped the pizza menu and gone Southern Kitchen Comfort Food. I recently discovered Faust last month and have been there a few times now. I have to say there isn't much complain about. I was very skeptical about the new menu but I went last night with my girlfriend and her best friend, we ordered Fried Mushrooms, Sweetcorn and Shrimp Fritters, and a pulled pork sandwich. All of which came out to $15. All three food items were delicious in there own rite. The sweetcorn and shrimp fritters were actually spicy. The Fried Mushrooms were perfect. The pulled pork sandwich was good enough to be mentioned in the same class as Station Cafe. Did I mention that this place is a bar? Well it is. Not only is it a bar, but it's probably the most reasonably priced bar on the St. Mary's Strip. I got a Lone Star and a shot of Fernet for $5. Ordered two more beers for my guest, it all came out to $10. They also have $5 house cocktails. The bar is called Faust, so there are drinks named after Voltaire and Joan of Arc. Both are great cocktails by the way. The atmosphere is very chill and relaxed. I don't get the feeling that they cater to a "scene" but it usually a younger crowd. This definitely not the type of place that smells like sweat, rum, and perfume. So if you're into a club scene keep heading down the road. The inside of the bar is small, but there is decent sized comfortable patio. They offer beer, a full bar for just about any cocktail plus snacks. I had a beer, but was lucky enough to taste of the Southern Punch my friend ordered. To my surprise it was actually very tasty! The bartenders were nice enough, the atmosphere was cool and the people hanging out here were legit ... what more can you ask for from a dive bar?! What a dive! This place has some CHEAP beers! I gotta say, I think this place has the cheapest beers and drinks on the St. Mary's Strip! $2 beers for happy hour! $2 wells! The place has a younger crowd that seems to be here on business- drinking cheap beers. They blast the rock music, and have all kinds of weird, eclectic decor that seems to focus on the mysterious and demonic. Strange cigar store indians behind the bar peer at you, and seem to taunt you into having more beers in order to make sense of the strangeness that is Faust. They have a healthy selection of cheap beers, from Lone Star to PBR. The best seating is outdoors on the patio amidst all the picnic tables. They have a weird back area that seems to be for loners. I don't quite know what happens back there. The service was fast and professional. It wasn't exactly clean here. Many of the pots and planters seemed to have been smashed, perhaps on one of their rowdier nights. There are signs imploring you not to put your trash in the planters. Nobody seems to follow those requests. They seemed to have ditched the pizza menu in favor of a Southern down home style of cooking. I didn't try the food though. Parking is quite a challenge here. If you park further down Woodlawn, you'll probably find a spot. Don't even bother looking for a spot on N St Mary's. They do have a wide variety of strange mixed drinks, like the avocado margarita. I'd read bad things about that, so I skipped in favor of a cold Lone Star. I think I made the right choice. I'll be back. If you can find a cheaper place on the Strip to drink, I'll be damned. read more

I thought the days of being kicked out for your race were over, but at this bar I walked in bought a beer and tipped the bartender, and two minutes later I get asked to leave because I wasn't welcome. With out any explanation I was kicked out, with the only excuse they said was because the boss said so. We walked into the smoky patio area and got some stares from the punk-wannabe patrons. I guess showing up to happy hour in nice work clothes is frowned at a joint like this. I love Faust. It's like Webhouse but with more seating and less stabbings. Plus, they have a really sweet and talented bartender named "Andrew" who pours a mean Lone Star. All kidding aside, this is a nice, cozy space with tons of picnic tables, a decent selection of bottled and canned beer, and old favorites like Fugazi and the Dead Kennedys coming out of the speakers, which are kept at a low enough volume to make for great conversation. A very nice makeover, especially with food served past 3am. One strong complaint: Can we get one veggie pizza that isn't made with American and/or cheddar cheese? Like, a straight-up old school pie with mozzarella and parmesan (the latter straight from a shaker, of course)? All these three- and four-cheese pizzas make me feel like I'm in the frozen food aisle at HEB. I love frozen pizza, but I want more from Faust. Also, I think some booths along one wall on the inside would be cool. But, not as cool as pizza without American and/or cheddar cheese. read more

Here's what makes you feel old: The music was angry when we came. It's dark and the menus on the wall are written in a small font. You'll sound like your parents when you were young and they couldn't read the menu. People smoke on the outside patio. If you're in your twenties or you like cheap cocktails, this is your next dive bar. If your life includes brunch, Home Depot and Bed, Bath and Beyond, you'll last one drink. One of my favorite late night Saturday hangouts. Great craft beer selections, cocktail and shot specials, a patio and pizza! I love the vibe both inside and out. The interior of the bar is pretty dimly lit and they are usually playing a movie on a small screen. There are a few tables scattered around, both for big parties and small ones (I've been here with just one person to about twelve, and it's always fun, all types of patrons welcomed.) The barstaff is cool, too and patient with people who don't know what they want and will make suggestions if you ask them. The outside of the bar (their patio) has a few benches and is enclosed on three sides by buildings. At times a DJ makes it over. It just feels nice! I don't even remember how the idea of heading to Faust after a night of drinking came about. We decided to try it out after hearing about it just opening up and selling pizza until 4am. A pretty nifty idea and close to other bars that it makes sense. Faust is definitely unique. It's in the back of the main building through a gate around a corner (to be fair, I was a tad tipsy when we arrived). We walked in to the back, I can't comment on the decor because it was so dark you could barely see anything. We got there right before last call so people were ordering drinks, closing out their tabs, and ordering pizza all at the same time. We stepped up to the bar counter and placed our food order at around 2am. They said it would be about 15-20 minutes for our three slices to come out. They gave us a handwritten number on a torn piece of paper. I hung around because this obviously was about to get confusing. About 30 minutes into our wait, I heard one bartender ask another if they should keep quoting 15 minutes because the kitchen was severely backed up. He told her that they need to keep quoting 15 minutes no matter how long it was taking. At around 3am (yes, an hour after our order was placed) our number was finally called. We picked up our pieces and headed out to the picnic tables outside. We tried to find some Parmesan and red pepper but gave up looking because we were so freakin' hungry. I remember the pizza being tasty, but I'm sure at that point I would have eaten cardboard with tomato sauce and been pleased. The only saving grace was that they played my favorite band on the iPod the entire hour wait. I will be back, but only because it's newer with some kinks to work out. read more
