However that was not the case at all for Vagabonds Resort in Rapid River, Michigan. We rented these cabins (all 4 cabins closest to the lake) for a fun family getaway in September of 2013. We expected rustic, considering the location and type of resort. What we got instead was run down and filthy. We swept the floor of our cabin upon arrival and had a disgusting pile of dirt. Can't imagine the last time they were swept/washed. The furniture was old, smelled mildewy and was very dirty. The mattresses on the beds had to be from at least the 80's, and considering the general state of the cabin, I can't imagine they are ever cleaned or vacuumed. The kitchen table and chairs were maybe nice 15 years or so ago, but the finish was worn off the table top and you couldn't put anything on the table without it sticking. Elbows, plates, a piece of paper, everything! The bathrooms are badly in need of repair. Rickety, leaning shower stall, uneven floor. On the day we were leaving a very large mouse was running around our cabin. This was a horrible experience and we will never again return to this resort. And for the record, the other 3 cabins were equally disgusting. I gave it one star because I had to. One star is far too generous for this place.

Getting to the campground was a little dicey as we didn't have great cell service for our map - I recommend writing out the turns beforehand and taking screen shots of the map route to help. The drive in was super pot-holey and a bit rough so take it slow and watch for craters! The sites at Camp Seven Lake are huge and not packed in super close like some parks. Lake Seven is 60 acres and great for boating and fishing, plus there's a really nice, small beach. There is lots of grassy space for picnics and bocce ball/yard games as well. The vault toilets were kept fairly clean and I never had to bring in extra toilet paper with me. The camp host stopped by a couple of times to see if we needed anything and was very friendly. The whole camp seemed really quiet and I never had any complaints about noise. There were lots of families and campers but it made for great tent camping too - our site had plenty of shade. It rained a bit on our first and last days, but the sites are made of small gravel that drained really well, so the sites weren't holding water. I had been worried about bugs, and they weren't too bad but I did use a LOT of DEET due to allergic reactions to insect bites. We were on sites 29 and 30 which was a great location - super close to the beach and vault toilet/water. Another thing we noticed was that the drinking water was by far the best we've ever tasted at any campground! No iron taste or sulphur smell. Just clear, clean tasting, pretty cold water. The beach was very clean and never really that busy; our friends told us that it never gets too crowded. Pack an inflatable tube and float in the swimming area! The only downside of the area is that there's not a ton around. Usually we like to check out breweries and sights when we go camping or at least hit up the camp store for ice and firewood. There's no camp store but Linda's Bread Box is a convenience store nearby, and Kitch-it-i-kipi is a big natural spring that is definitely worth a visit. Otherwise you can go to Manistique or up to Munising. We were traveling with a baby so we mostly stuck close to the campground, which was still great fun. I would love to go back to this campground again next summer!

We heard another camper (with another group) played the sax one evening and it was very soothing with the sound of the lake lapping the shoreline. I discovered Bay Furnace through the app on my phone called Campendium. Campendium was very helpful in assisting me finding worthwhile campsites along my 2021 summer road trip. Although Bay Furnace Campground is technically located in the town of Munising, Michigan, it's actually situated in the charming town of Christmas, MI. Though when I was here visiting back in the month of May...there wasn't anything Christmas(y) about the town, lol. Still, the main purpose for me being in Munising....was to explore the scenic coastal landscape along the shores of Lake Superior. Overall this campground is set just outside Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, and a host of beautiful waterfalls. After spending a good portion of my day driving along Pictured Rocks NL...I couldn't find any affordable accommodations in Munising. The next best thing for myself was camping. I had a tent with me and showed up here to Bay Furnace Campground. It was early evening when I pulled up to the entrance area. The instructions stated that Bay Furnace accepts about half reservations at recreation.gov and half on a first come, first served basis. I was a little nervous about not finding a campsite when I started driving throughout the grounds. It was late in the day on a Thursday just at the start of the summer vacation travel season, yet I spotted an unoccupied site right near the entrance and backed my car into the site. Yah, I was good for the evening! As per normal policy...when you arrive, you pick a campsite and then fill out a slip with your payment and drop it into a safety box. Then the campsite is yours and you can start constructing your tent and getting settled in. It was $22 per night. They accept cash and checks, though no credit cards. Checks must be made out to RRM, Inc. and need to include your Drivers License and License Plate Numbers. There are about 50 non-electric campsites on the grounds each with a fire-pit and picnic table. Check-In time is 2pm and Check-Out time is 11am. Honestly, I really lucked out probably grabbing the 50th and last site. Because in general, throughout this UP section of Michigan I had trouble discovering on a whim available campgrounds that weren't full. I was grateful to be here. Unfortunately there weren't any showers to use, but still...I had cell phone reception and each campsite was really spacious. I felt like I had plenty of privacy being in the woods without anyone around. Two extra notes I'd like to mention... I didn't have plans for the night and across the street from Bay Furnace was the Kewadin Christmas Casino. So...after setting up my tent and washing up...I took a short 15 minute walk outside the campground and went inside the casino and played some blackjack for an hour. It was sort of a pleasant change of pace from driving and picture taking all around the UP, to all of a sudden sitting down and playing blackjack at a random casino. Returning back to my campsite, there was a terrific little overlook vista point section just to the side of the entrance where I sat down on the shore of Lake Superior and admired the colorful sunset. It was a pleasant way to end my day. This panoramic coastline beach shore can't be missed when you're walking towards the facilities area. I highly recommend hanging out here when the sun begins to fade. Although I am a big outdoorsy type of person who loves being among nature...I just really wanted this opportunity to highlight Bay Furnace Camp and Picnic Grounds. Munising, Michigan is well known for its scenic waterfalls combined with picturesque vantage points of Lake Superior that makes this section of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan quite popular. But for those tourists who don't mind setting up camp among quiet surroundings with basic amenities, then I believe you will appreciate choosing to stay at Bay Furnace Campground in the heart of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

There are no trees around the trailer spots, but the surrounding area is beautiful forest. There are fire pits and picnic tables. We needed a part and had Amazon ship it to the office, and we were able to pick it up at 9 PM. There are 4 clean showers and a nice bathroom. The only recommendation I would give is to add a chair or seat in each shower. The entire campground is very well maintained.

This is a really high rating but the park was perfect for us…read more It's new and has gravel roads, no trees, but electric and water and sewer campsites. It's spacious and most sites are pull through. There are some tent sites back in the woods and along the river, very rural and pretty out there. There is no pool, playground or fenced in pet walk. What I really liked the most was the proximity to local bicycle trails located just off the park, making it easy to ride to Marquette and even Presque island. The Northern Michigan University public golf club is just outside the park. If conditions are right you have an unobstructed view of the Aurora borealis. I've seen many prettier parks but this was just right for our needs. Even though we had some rain the gravel sites didn't get muddy, big plus when traveling with dogs. Enjoy the amazing area, hike, bike, eat and enjoy nature... this park is a great place to set up and then go do the stuff you came here to do.

camped here in mid june for 3 nights…read more first off location - right off lake michigan, maybe 50 feet. its so calming to here the light waves hit the shore at nighttime. for the most part there is tree line between the sites and the lake but there are benches throughout the site where you can view the lake - really nice for the sunrise and sunsets. the sites them self were quite large compared to the sites ive been to through the years. we were able to easily park a SUV, set up our tent, have a picnic bench, and a fire pit with no problem. another large vehicle and tent would have fit the site. a majority of the sites had campers parked at them. a majority of the sites contained electrical outlets - 20 and 30 amp receptacles the amenities were outstanding. the bathroom/shower area in the middle of the site appeared to be brand new or very recently renovated. the bathrooms were cleaned daily and the showers actually had hot water and private stalls with lockable doors. the site also had a volleyball beach court, teatherball, and basketball hoop near the beach. the rangers sold wood and ice and also had gear for the sporting events that could be used. i did not see a downside to this site. the nearest town was at least a 20-30 minute drive so we felt like we were away from life aside from the occassional semi truck that would speed down the nearest county road.

Lake Michigan is beautiful! The parks is well kept up!…read more As far as the campground, itself... Most sites are just grass, and many are not even close to being level. For some reason, they let tall weeds grow 5-6 feet at the lakefront.... Sitting down, you can hear the lake, but not see it very well. Not sure why....? Bring an extra extension electrical cord. Remember, no water hookups, so fill up on your way in. Site 33, does NOT have unobstructed view of the lake, as tenters set up directly between the lake and site 33. "Great" playground for the kids.... But the screaming gets old quickly! And take extra caution, because kids were "racing" alongside our vehicle on their bikes! And so, if you are coming for some quiet time.....don't. And, they installed some "bell/chime" for the kids.... Super annoying! The swimming beach is rocky by the shore. May want some water socks. Shower and toilet facilities are nice! Summary: Beautiful, well maintained park, but if you want a quiet retreat, go elsewhere.

So I emailed them, no response, I called them today and the person who answered the phone basically said I was lying...explained to him what I did and that was his response needless to say their website and customer service sucks. First time back in about twenty years. And this remains a great place!…read more We quit camping for a number of reasons but have resumed pop-up tent camping. I (we're semi-retired so time/convenience of a motel or lodge aren't as important and the lower cost is more important). We came here with our 3 sons years ago and returned with our youngest son and grandson. Aqualand has changed in one respect: seasonal campers occupy about 85% of the sites. But it's still a pretty friendly park and fairly quiet. The grounds are well kept without being fussy, The owners are friendly and genuinely care about your experience. There's a pool for the kids, and fishing pond, and great roads for kids to bike around. The bath house is well maintained and clean as well as odorless. The location is great with easy access to Ephraim, Sister Bay and Baileys Harbor.
