Hicksville library is a very old library. It has a small parking lot in the back. They have various activities for residents. Tonight's event was making Summer salad. 2 different salads were prepared by Sheetal Alreja - for a seating of about 30 women in the Community room downstairs (Recipes were placed on the table from one of the librarians or assistants) (see pix) -- with her husband Gotham helping to serve and share the two very different salads. While her mom was on the sidelines holding her jewlery and rings as she put on gloves. There was pleasant interaction with the audience and it was a nice hour and a half event for the night. As there are so many types of salads and foods that can be made and shared it would be nice to have them back again. read more

Very disappointed. Children's dance class was taught by a woman who seemingly has no idea how to interact with children. I have degrees in Early Childhood Education and Special Education for children of elementary age. With that being said- there were zero accomodations for children needing assistance and no steady pace to the program (teacher frequently taking breaks in between each song loosing the interest of the children's frequently). I felt the other parents frustration as the class progressed and left before it was over. There were not enough materials for all children, instructor didn't even notice. Children appeared uninterested in her underwhelming program. The man and women at the reference desk were EXTREMELY helpful, providing useful information and kept a positive vibe throughout our interactions. Thank you to them. The librarian in the children's section acted annoyed by the presence of the children and was beyond unhelpful when asked for specific books and questions of that nature. I think her bottom might be permanently glued to the chair behind the desk- or atleast that is her mindset. Please employ people who ENJOY interacting with children and want to make the library an enriching experience for all people who visit. This was not my experience when visiting other Nassau County locations during the Nassau County Library tours during Summer 2023; we attended 23 other libraries- Hicksville is by far THE WORST one we went too. read more

I am here right now on December 11th 2023, and this white haired man who works on the floor downstairs was absolutely so rude and made me move from the desk I was at for being too loud. I was presenting the project and I see him gossiping to his woman coworkers on the first floor once he asked me to move. Absolutely ridiculous I used to come here during COVID, and never had a problem. Won't be back after today. read more

Worked here as a security guard for maybe about 2-4 years before i don't know what really happened but either the contract has been terminated and wasn't satisfied with the service or just flat out wanted to hire another company, but all i know is that i was there for the majority of the time which means i did a good job they kept me there. Loved the environment workers treated me well (at least some of them did) loved dealing with the public always have than we got a new director she is wonderful and nice but to nice to the point where she wants to satisfy everyones needs and even always wanna abide complaints from karens who have no idea how the environment is around the work place and just put their input into something selfish. Coming here to study and do paperwork but you gotta remember there's a middle school next door you have to remember when and where you wanna be at when the hooligans come out, if you wanna work here i would think about it, it can be beneficial but at the same time what work place doesn't have its drama right? Overall this library is very convenient front desk workers and librarians are very helpful and respectful people. Downside is the location you just never know who can walk into the place and stir up some trouble hence the security its not just for the kids but for the adults also you'd be surprised what'll happen around a nice relaxing place. read more

I have no clue what the other posters are complaining about. This place is a LIBRARY and not a waiting room nor a place for your children to be playing. People tend to forget that this is funded by the public and not a "for profit" organization. I don't go to Burger King expecting Michelin star restaurant quality service... The women at the front desk were very pleasant and helpful in my application for a library card. At the help desk, they actually allowed me to recharge my iPhone as it was low on battery and I needed it for work. I have seen the security guard but never had any issues with him. Just be quiet, mind your own business, and utilize the library for what it was meant for. Not a cafe, not a playground, not a place for people to socialize. Thought that was common sense. I do agree that it is a bit outdated and needs some more desks which is why I gave 4 stars but I have seen a bunch of children in a separate room playing video games which means that the library also provides entertainment programs for kids. Considering this is all free for the public, I think it's a great establishment. read more

Spent the afternoon here while waiting for my car to be fixed at pep boys. Sadly I walked here for worse seats than an auto shop. I have to agree with previous poster the service here is poor and I also felt strange cos there was a cop monitoring this library. This is a small library and a pretty crappy one. Out dated tables and seating, organization is all over the place. Noise level is really high here too. Not sure why a cops was here as security but I would be very concerned letting my kids here alone. Huge movie/audio selection almost like a mini blockbuster. This place is just strange and needs a serious face lift. Stay away from the old white haired ladies they seem to have major attitude towards people and I witness them gossiping about citizens sadly. The gentleman and younger staff seemed very peppy helpful and enjoyed chatting with citizens. My one star is based on the library compared to other libraries, government needs to allocate funds and review staff here. read more

Been using this library since I was able to walk. Some of the staff at circulation is REALLY great. And the reference guy who's been there for a long long time is the sweetest. When I was younger one of the librarians taught me how to use the ALISweb server to order books from other libraries--it's how I read anything and everything even now when I'm 25 years old. It's definitely in need of an update, and staff who knows how to treat people who are different from them with a little more candor--but otherwise this library has always been my go to. In middle school, I used to study and do homework in the back rooms while my parents were at work and they picked me up. In high school, I was a tutor and met my students at this library all the time. And as a nanny, I brought the kids I watched here for programs, to use the iPads, and check out books--they much preferred it to the library in their hometown of Syosset. The teenagers here do get a little rowdy during after school hours and they take up way too many tables. Kids are different now than I used to be, and it's sad to see a lot of libraries becoming video arcades. Hicksville has luckily maintained itself as a library and is a great place to teach kids how to respect books and media. The thing is, a lot of the groups of kids that come in are unsupervised by an adult, largely due to its really close proximity to the middle school. They need security guards who are fit to work around students and focus their energy better so that they can maintain a learning environment in that space. Maybe they should consider hiring teachers for after school hours to establish supervised use of the library. The one thing I miss is the Better World Books drop--I used to exchange books at that thing all the time. This library has often been my home away from home! Thanks HPL! read more

I love this library!! I have been going to this library for over 20 years. The staff is nice and helpful. They offer free online and in class courses for Microsoft suite, bookkeeping etc. These courses are Gale courses. They offer online language courses ( Pronunciater). You can choose from 80 languages. This library has physical foreign language learning materials (books, CD etc.) They have a vast book, audio book and DVD collection. The DVD's offer old movies to movies that have been out on DVD for a month. Their children's section is phenomenal with books for every age group, and DVDs. When my daughter's were growing up, they participated in the summer reading program which offered gifts for every 5 books they read. They went to the arts and craft classes offered by the library. the library was a safe haven for my girls if I was running late. they have concerts in their community room. They offer cooking classes, senior aerobics, book clubs, once a week they show a movie @ 1:00pm. This is a fabulous library! read more

I love this library! I have been going to this library for over 20 years. The staff is nice and very helpful. The services and resources the library offers are top notch. They offer career training courses in a classroom setting or online for free. The online course is Gale Courses. You can learn up to 80 languages with their Pronunciator online course. Go to their website click Research, then test preparation, then Gale courses or Pronunciator. They have an extensive collection of book, audio books and DVDs. Their DVDs range from old movies to movies that have been out on DVD for one month, and foreign films. They offer exercise, financial planning, safe driving, arts and craft courses for adults. They have concerts in the community room and show movies once a week. They have excellent children's programs: summer reading program, arts and crafts etc. When my daughter's were growing up, we took advantage of all of their programs. I've been coming to this library for 20 years, the staff have always been helpful and courteous. What this library lacks in size they make up for in amenities. By using the library computer I was able to easily reserve a home improvement book that was only available in Hewlitt and have it sent to Hicksville. I was promptly notified by e-mail a few days later that the book was in. read more
