I'd never been -- the station is only three years old -- so I stopped by Sunday to (pardon the expression) 'case the joint out.' Good thing! I entered at Grand Central Station, followed signs and walked. Then walked some more. Took escalators, maybe an elevator. Finally ended up at ticketing. I don't think I would have allotted enough time if I hadn't known the layout beforehand. It was off hour. Not many people there. The customer service rep, a wonderful woman named Heather, wanted to make sure I knew what I was doing. She actually left her post to show me the tracks and helped me get my bearings. (Guess what! Heather was there Monday morning when I returned. I felt like I was seeing an old friend!) Here's a tip for everyone: If you don't want to deal with the underground labyrinth, look for the elevator on Madison off 47th Street. It'll take you directly down to ticketing and the waiting area. And specifically for older folks: To reap the senior discount, purchase your tickets the day of your trip, not before. There's no upcharge to buy tickets on the train. If I heard correctly, senior fares are the same for peak and off-peak -- but don't quote me on that! This station is light, bright, much quieter than Penn. Bathrooms are infinitely better. Now that I know what I'm doing, this may become my station of choice.

There are escalators and elevators to get you down and there are some vendors on the concourse level as well. Bathrooms too and it does connect with the "main" part of Grand Central. GC Madison mainly serves the LIRR.

Nice little train station in the heart of Garden City. You'll find two platforms when you climb up…read moretwo stories of stairs. There's also a set of elevators if you don't wish to climb stairs. Once you're there, you can purchase a ticket or what me and my friend did was just jump on tje train heading towards Penn Station. A train attendant will eventually ask all passenger for their tickets or pay onboard either using cash or credit card. How much was a one-way ticket to Penn Station? It was only $17/pax! Few shaded areas with lots of views making it a pretty awesome ride into Manhattan. You'll reach there in less than 30 minutes because on Sunday's it operates on a rapid express route skipping several stations. It's an enjoyable ride and per Google, there was an option to transfer at Jamaica Station. But since the faster route brought us to Penn, it cut even more time. Lot's of people seem to keep to themselves, I'm pretty sure that you will come across beggars or train performers, so always keep track of your belongings and stay vigilant as this is city public transportation. I bet on weekdays it can get extremely crowded like what you'd typically go through during rush hour. However you need to experience riding The Meteo in NYC. It's fun. Definitely recommend!

It is also possible to purchase tickets on-line. The train was very prompt and on schedule. The ride was quiet. The windows could have been cleaned so the we could enjoy looking outside. The inside of the train cars were very clean. My one big complaint is that when we arrived at the Carle Place station from Penn Station, the door opened for just a few seconds and we couldn't get off the train. We had to ride to the next station and walk 25 minutes to our destination. It was late at night. Luckily it was a safe neighborhood. I don't know if we were supposed to do something to get the door to open. There were no officials in our train car to ask.

Beneath her home at The Dakota, these wonderful 2018 underground "SKY" mosaics present calming blue skies with puffs of soft clouds taken from her photos and incorporate handwritten thought-provoking words that tie into her own work as an artist and also connect with the messages of John Lennon, her late husband. They are the perfect imagery to stop and reflect. In addition to the mosaics, you'll notice digital signage and other renovations also made in 2018. Nevertheless, the MTA SHAMEFULLY DID NOT INSTALL ANY ELEVATORS - OUTRAGEOUS, considering that this station abuts Central Park! People who cannot easily navigate the stairs, such as with strollers, carriages, or wheelchairs cannot easily use this subway station - especially that extra set to reach the lower Downtown platform!!!

Indeed, I agree with fellow Yelper Marianne W. as I also had to search this station in my Yelp mobile application for a check-in. The platforms have the original artisan mosaic name tablets written "72ND ST." in white sans-serif lettering on a midnight blue background and black border, as well as small "72" tile captions in white numbering. There are also directional signage with arrows "DOWNTOWN" which I admire, appreciate and value artisan skilled trade tile setter when the MTA NYC subway system was built. There are wooden benches available. This station is not ADA accessible. This station contains two underground basement levels including a mezzanine level. The mezzanine level contain fare control area, station agent booth, MetroCard and OMNY machines. The station facade contain a green globe indicating a 24/7 hour token booth with a station agent for access to the station. The 72nd Street is the closest station to both the Dakota apartment building (which is immediately outside the station) and the Strawberry Fields memorial in Central Park.

I used to go to Times Square then transfer to the NJ transit or Greyhound in order to get to Newark. When I come here, it's easy to get a ticket. Now you're able to use tap-and-go to enter the station. Typically I don't wait too long for the train to arrive, however, going back the wait ranges from 15-25 minutes unfortunately. Although I don't come here often, my experience is overall a decent one.

D is for degrading experience!!…read more Weekends are problematic to strap hangers entering Brooklyn as it is re-routed on the N line beginning 36th Street to the very last stop- Coney Island Stillwell Avenue. Strap hangers who need the D train are then forced to take the D train going towards Manhattan to their desired stop. Upon arriving at Coney Island Stillwell Avenue, this train stalled for ten minutes due to so-called "signal problem" to become sitting ducks. Aggravating and total frustration for a complete waste of time travel!!! However, at the 18th Avenue station there are two beautiful lighted glass art on the wall.

A little less easy to transfer between Express and Local in the same direction, since they are on separate platforms, although this station is ADA compliant with full accessibility. I typically transfer alternatively at TimeSquare or similar which don't require a platform change. Note - There is elevator work being done, which should be completed in early 2026. That being said, when your here check out the public art in the crossunder. In 2003, MTA installed the series of glass mosaic murals by American multimedia artist Eric Fischl called "Garden of Circus Dreams," which depict dream episode of a commuter in a circus visit fantasy. These pieces a nod to the spectacles held at Madison Square Garden overhead. Worth checking out!

It will be interesting to see what replaces it. The system is huge and gets you to places at a most reasonable rate. It takes some practice to know which train and platform to use, The system is over 100 years plus old. The newer stations have elevators but it is mainly stairs in the original stations. Also washrooms are few and difficult to find at most stations. If you cannot walk far, I would advise using another mode of transport. Many trains have standing room only.

And, if you are trying to get to the city, the Air Train is more reliable, faster, and predictable than taxis and rideshare at a fraction of the cost (and sometime more spacious or comfortable). Plus, it's luggage friendly and accessible. And they don't need to know your name. If you're confused, you need to take the smooth, magnetic Air Train to exit the airport to either Howard Beach to catch the A train or to Jamaica for the E, J, or Z train (or the Long Island Rail Road direct to Grand Central or Penn Station for $5.25-$7.25). To get directions in reverse back to the airport, just hold this review up to a mirror. Ideally, it would be great to have a direct link from airport to city, like Chicago, Atlanta, DC, San Francisco, Cleveland, Salt Lake City, St. Louis, and Minneapolis and Portland (and Seattle if you walk 1000 feet), but I still appreciate the "two-seat" system because the signage is super easy. You can jump off your plane and follow the yellow signs straight to the air train, pay at the turnstile, and be on a train within 15 minutes anytime of the day. As of June 2026, it's $8.75 for the Air Train, and $3 for the subway. Pro Tip: If you are heading to Terminal 8 from the city, get off the train at Terminal 1, walk across the platform, and catch the clockwise "All Terminals" to catch it in 1 (not 5) stops.

Took the AirTrain twice, both times using this train stop in Terminal 4 (there are also stops at…read moreevery other active JFK terminal) to either enter (going to Manhattan) or exit (going to JFK) the AirTrain. There is no payment done here, as one can take the AirTrain to go from one terminal to another or to the rental car center. The $8.75 charge is only done if using either the Jamaica or Howard Beach train station to enter the NYC subway system. From anywhere in Terminal 4, there are signs directing you to grand transportation, and once closer, explicit signs directing you to the AirTrain. Once here, one has to make a choice to either take the Jamaica line or Howard Beach line. When we were here early on a Tuesday morning, each train was running every 10 minutes or so.

If you're traveling through New York, I definitely recommend Moynihan Train Hall if your train…read moredeparts from there. It's modern, clean, bright, and much more spacious than the original Penn Station. There are comfortable waiting areas for Amtrak passengers, great restaurants, and unique shops to browse while you wait. The entire station feels more organized and much less stressful. Penn Station is still the main hub for New Jersey Transit, the Long Island Rail Road, and other commuter trains. It has plenty of restaurants and food options, but it's definitely showing its age. It's extremely busy, especially during rush hours, with people constantly rushing, weaving through crowds, and trying to catch trains. It can feel hectic and overwhelming if you're not familiar with it. Overall, while Penn Station gets the job done, Moynihan Train Hall offers a much more enjoyable travel experience. If I have a choice in the future, I'll definitely choose Moynihan whenever possible.

Penn Station and Moynihan Train Hall are not my stomping grounds - I commute to the city from…read moreWestchester and work on the east side so GCT is more my jam. However, I was taking the Amtrak to DC and as such, needed to embark out of Moynihan. I haven't taken the Amtrak since it embarked from NYC out of Penn - and I gotta say this is a complete upgrade. Penn is old, ugly, and depressing - the complete opposite of Moynihan. The main hall is grand, with beautiful fixtures, super high ceilings, well kept finishings, and an overall bright aesthetic. Getting around is relatively easy - there are signs everywhere indicating where to go. To pass time, there's a decent amount of shops in the hall, and a large food hall several options. Despite Moynihan being an overall positive, I do feel there are opportunities to increase train time signage. They were not in the most ideal places, especially in the ticketed waiting area. Speaking of the waiting area, it was decently sized but I think the seats could have been a smidge more comfortable. Despite my critiques, Moynihan Train Hall is an overall yes - I was super impressed. There's no question this is an upgrade to commuting out of Penn, and wouldn't hesitate to take the Amtrak out of here in the future.
