Such great Mexican food! It's fancy Mexican despite it being a mom and pop shop. Be prepared to have a leisurely meal. The owner sings on occasion and it's a wonderful experience. The chicken burro ranchero is my go-to. read more

This is the kind of place you either love or hate. Food: upscale Mexican, along with some Latin American dishes. This ain't El Limon (another favorite of mine). If you want a taco and no frills, go to El Limon. If you want something more sophisticated, go here. It's silly to compare El Limon and Hidalgo -- that's like comparing a pizza parlor and an Italian restaurant that also makes gourmet pizza. Some commonalities, but not many. Everything we had was excellent. Service: soooooo slowwwwwwwwwww. We had the owner who sings for about 3/4 of the meal -- she was great, but she was super-busy in the kitchen and we didn't see her much. Another server took over at the end. Singing: right next to me. Very impressive! Atmosphere: small, loud, intimate. So, if you're an introvert who is looking for a quiet place, room to stretch out, and cheap tacos, this is not your place (your place is El Limon). Otherwise, give them a try. Can't wait to come back here again and again! Glad we were able to get a table. The food was so good. We started off with crispy chips and fresh pick de Gallo and Guac. Next my husband ordered tacos and quesadillas that were so tasty and plentiful. We actually took home the guacamole and some quesadillas. I got the Huchninango a la Veracruzana that had combined flavors of green peppers, olives, capers, and onions in a light red sauce over a perfectly poached red snapper. It was also served with rice and mixed vegetables. So good but not overwhelming. Since it's BYOB we brought our own beer. The friendly service was warm and welcoming I felt like I was eating at someone's house rather than a restaurant! We were pleasantly entertained when the owner sang a couple songs for those who were dining. The homemade tres leche cake we brought home paired perfectly with a cup of coffee. Hidalgo! Where have you been all my life!?!? Welcome to Media! We love you! No offense to the other 2 Mexican places in town. Although Diegos is really just an American style "tex-mex" place (sizzling platters, etc...) This place is the real deal. As authentic as you can get. And the woman (who I assume runs the joint) who sings? So cool! All of the food was fresh, delicious and full of flavor. We dined here on a Friday evening. We were a party of 6 and had a reservation for 6 pm. I did not feel that we were warmly welcomed but rather matter of factly shown to our table. As another reviewer noted, you need to ask for water (and make it clear that everyone at the table wants water, not just the person asking). We brought tequila and they mixed us oversized cocktails in fun glasses but unfortunately the margarita was too sweet for my taste. While the food was good, I wasn't overly impressed and it took quite a long time to get our entrees. I would have given 3 stars for this review but while we had cash out to settle up the bill, we were told there was another party waiting for our table. Really?? I feel really bad writing this review. I really, really wanted to like this restaurant. I love Mexican food; I love local, family-run restaurants....this place seemed like a great addition to the area when I heard about it. In fact this is the third time we tried to eat here (the first two times the wait time was prohibitive). Almost two hours and nearly $50 later, I'm terribly disappointed. We waited over an hour (after ordering) for a lukewarm, bland, inauthentic burrito. I've had better for far cheaper (and faster!) at Qdoba or Chipotle. And the food itself was not only terribly bland, but the bones in my chicken were a nice unintentional touch. Even the salsa was beyond mild - it totally lacked any flavor. Is this what passes for Mexican in Delco? Not to mention the terrible service - legit bad. We won't be going back. read more

Had a very nice time here. It was full on a Monday night. I had the cheese enchiladas with beans and rice. It was very good. The menu is large enough that everyone can get something they like. Hugely disappointing. We waited 15-20 minutes just for menus. Another 20 minutes later we had to ask for our appetizers. Flautas were filled with burnt chicken and were inedible. The entrees were mediocre at best. For $17 a plate I expected more than one or two tablespoons of retried beans and rice when they were skimpy on the meat. We left $70 poorer and hungry. It's nice to finally have decent Mexican food in Media. I have been very disappointed by my experiences at other places in the area (e. g., Dos Gringos, El Gran Rodeo), and I usually don't feel like driving into the city for my Tamalex fix (I'm sorry to betray you, Tamalex. I love you, but I hate city traffic). Hidalgo's was nice. The service was absolutely outstanding: very accommodating, friendly, genuine. I have high expectations for tortilla chips and salsa at a Mexican restaurant: homemade and not salty. These chips were absolutely perfect: thick, crunchy, not salted. The pico de gallo that comes with was VERY fresh. I'm not usually a huge pico fan, but the flavors were perfectly balanced--it was refreshing. I ordered the chicken enchiladas with verde sauce. The tortillas themselves have to be home-made--they are phenomenal, and the chicken was good. The tomatillo sauce had a great flavor, and when we discussed the possibility of requesting a spicier option with the server in the future, she reassured us that if we requested our dish to be spicier, they would certainly kick it up a notch--they prefer to keep the spice level down for most patrons, who may not like high spice levels. Except for the lack of heat (which could be remedied by ordering it spicier next time), the flavor of everything was spot on. Fresh ingredients make a huge difference. Overall, we had a great experience, and we will be back. I am assuming that Hidalgo's is BYOB, but it would be great if they were able to sell beer or alcoholic margaritas in the future. read more

Cozy, friendly restsurant, fair prices, small menu of some expected dishes and some dishes found at fine Mexican restaurants in towne. Byob/Byot (tequila), they made the margueritas the table next to us wanted. We had ceviche, red snapper and a mole chicken dish. Sides of rice, beans and veg could have been better..but the main was fresh and seasoned perfectly. Soledad and her husband had the night off so the kids ran the show. Service was as slow as could be and we found the food to be mediocre at best. I'm so happy Hidalgo has reopened in Media. The food was great. Maria, the owner, came out and sang a few arias. So charming. The portions are pretty nice. OMG!!! The food. The service. Impeccable from start to finish! Everything was so fresh that you could almost hear the ocean eating the seafood dishes and were transported to a local Mexican neighborhood kitchen eating the others. The shrimp cocktail was NOT just shrimp cocktail folks. When it says "chefs special sauce", they mean it! My steak was juicy and tender, everything seasoned just right. I could go on and on and on but the reality is that you will never know until you go!! And to top it all off, our waitress Mme Flores broke out in glorious song that made me feel like I was a Mexican queen. Her voice!! Her voice is truly amazing!! Me, my 17 year old twins, four year old and two year old thoroughly enjoyed our time there. Very catering (took their little sippy cups and filled them with juice and brought them back). Don't know why we waited so long to try dinner at Hidalgo...we have been missing out! My husband and I had dinner there tonight and it was wonderful. We started with chips, salsa and guacamole--all were fresh and delicious. I had the chicken enchiladas with green tomatillo sauce, it was tasty and a generous portion with rice and beans. My husband had the Cochinita Pibil, it was very flavorful! For dessert we shared the homemade ice cream with cinnamon sugar tortillas, it was a simple, light dessert. The cake that everyone raves about was sold out when we arrived, so we will have to go back to try it soon! The owner/server was wonderful and she sang for us which was a real treat, she has a powerful voice, that makes you forget that busy Baltimore Ave is just outside the door. read more

My girl and I went here on Sunday night about 5pm and had 2 apps, 2 different mains. Fresh salsa with chips not that jared stuff which i reuse to buy. Fantastic best place I have eaten in quite a long time as in California or Mexico. Server was spot on and did a great job even when people came in after us and place filled up. I am Mexican and it was like mom made. We asked for hot sauce which they brought in a ramekin and was told it was homemade and hot not over hot - just wait for it a bit. Fresh authentic food. If you didn't like this place. I just have to say you have not eaten well at other spots and are used to food that is catered to American tastes. If you eat in a Mexican place try a bottle of Mexican soda and bag the American crap for one night. I have eaten at El Limon and would not go back if you paid me. We shared a flan which was done how it should be done! This is a very hard dessert to make. Our server beamed when we told her this. She had made it. Her dad cooks the food. I finally stopped by and really enjoyed it. Wish I could drink cause the bring your own techilla margaritas looked amazing. My meal was an unusual pork dish I've never had before. I wasn't blown away but was good and definitely by a skilled chef. It had these cooked bananas that were delectable. The waitress sang for us! She really put her heart into it, so I gotta give the place serious kudos for heart. The flan was awesome but that other cake they have looks awesome too. Media still has yet to surpass average with their Mexican food options. I was hoping Hidalgo's would blow me away considering the ratings here, but I was a little disappointed. The food wasn't bad, just nothing too flavorful unless you ask for hot sauce (which you absolutely NEED to do because their hot sauce that appeared to be homemade was incredible and super spicy!). However, I can only speak for the enchiladas...maybe some of the other options are better. The margaritas are good (it's BYOT) but definitely didn't taste like a typical margarita. It kinda tasted like an extra sugary limey orange juice...but it didn't taste bad by any means. Super generous portion too! The thing that put me off more was the service. I hate complaining about service, especially when they're not rude or anything, but it really was pretty bad....there were only 1 or 2 other groups at the restaurant and our waitress didn't come around even once for at least 15-20 minutes after we were sitting there, and then maybe another 20 minutes before she took our order, and at that point there were even less people in the restaurant. I don't think I'd go out of my way to come back, but I would give it another chance eventually. read more

We've visited Hidalgo twice and can't wait to go back again. Service is top notch and the food is delicious. Kid friendly, and it's nice to get tasty Mexican food that isn't a chain. We're looking forward to their move to Media so we can visit even more frequently. The mole is amazing and just about everything about this spot is housemade. I asked for hot sauce, and it looked as though even that was house made. Delicious flan and tres-leche cake, horchata, you name it, Hidalgo has it. Great great great!! I grew up on great mexican and when we were younger, my parents always took us to this great place in Philly called El Mariachi. They eventually opened other locations and all of the brothers split up and eventually they closed. The owner of this restaurant is the sister to the Mariachi brothers and her and her husand are the nicest people!! The food is excellent! You MUST bring your own tequilla and so you can get the margaritas which are served a the classic hand painted clay pot and are DELICIOUS. I lived in Springfield for a year and we were there many times, my whole family has been as well! If we didn't sit and eat, I ordered it to go! Parking is limited and it's small but you definitely can NOT judge a book by it's cover on this one. read more

The food was delicious. I would have given Hidalgo 4 stars, however I am a vegetarian and there were no vegetarian options. Instead, there was a letter "V" in the margin of a handful of menu items, and at the bottom, it said the letter "V" meant those entrees could be made without meat. I ordered one of those, an enchilada. But what Hidalgo did was simply take out the meat rather than offer a substitute, and the cost was the same, which didn't seem right.
