We pick blueberries (summer) and apples (fall) up the hill at Green Mountain Orchard. This time, we noticed Hidden Springs Maple and decided to check it out. We happened to run into a friend who claimed to be a self-appointed Maple Creemee tester, and rated Hidden Springs as a star: very creamy and very maple-ey flavor. I decided to give it a try. If you're in the Putney area, and need maple products, this is the place to go. Other places try to be this place, but this place is that place and all other places just don't place. Plenty of parking on a wonderful sunny day. Went inside and was immediately greeted by the nice young lady at the counter. Walked in and browsed first. Didn't want to seem greedy. Found a sale rack in the back, which was stocked, and went back up front to grab a basket. Found all kinds of items on that rack to give to friends. FYI, I grew up here and am home visiting, so I'm bringing it all back so my southern friends can experience the real stuff. The hotel we stayed at served Hidden Springs maple syrup at breakfast. My friend wanted to buy some of the little bottles so we fired up the GPS and went hunting for the store before heading home. This is the cutest place! So many options and so many things to taste. Special shout out to Surita, who was so helpful to my shopping companions. The best thing ever is the bourbon maple syrup, which is the perfect blend of sweetness and alcohol. Coming in second was the rum maple syrup, also delicious. I loved the dark robust syrup for the deep caramel notes, so I got a bottle of that. I can't wait to try it in coffee. Really nice little place. We love taking a day trip up to this area no matter what time of year, but this was the first time we have been to this little gem of a place. We usually hit the regular places...Putney Inn for Dinner or lunch...Basketville for a few trinkets, and maybe even the general store. This time we found a flier for Hidden Springs Maple and decided to take the short drive up Westminster Rd. Such a nice little country store with a super nice owner. He had a fresh pot of coffee, as well as a few samples of cheese and some of their maple products. They even make their own maple syrup, which is worth the stop alone. I have been buying Hidden Springs Maple Syrup since 2000. When I moved out of Vermont, I found out you could order it online! They have the best maple syrup by far and it's organic. I hope Hidden Springs is able to keep its shipping doors open to the public because we would all be extremely sad to lose our maple syrup! We use the maple syrup in place of sugar in almost everything, our bread, on oatmeal, in yogurt, etc. Hidden Springs also has good old fashioned customer service, they care about your satisfaction and you are treated like you would treat family. I like that they have a simple tasting with the four grades of syrup and little tasting cups so you can help yourself and self-educate on which type you prefer the best. The prices are reasonable - real maple syrup is not cheap nor easy to make.
