I spent six years homeschooling our daughter before high school because we couldn't get a handle on medical conditions that were causing her to have learning issues at the time, and with healthcare the way it is, it took a long time to get diagnoses and relief. If it wasn't for High Bluff Academy, I don't know what we would have done to ensure academic success for her. Our daughter will be going into her third year at HBA, and she's done extremely well the past two years. HBA is an excellent and wonderful school. As teachers, we can do so much for our students since the classes are so small. We can truly tailor our instruction according to our students needs and interests which is so unique. Unlike many others schools, HBA offers a kind and welcoming environment for students and staff. What a option we have here in North County. We are really lucky to have an alternative for our kids. Yes, they are very expensive but so worth it. They can go FT or take individual classes here to catch up at their current High School. The small class size and extra help from the teacher is key, at least for my son. Over by Morgan Run so close to Torrey and CCA as well as Cathedral. We have struggled to find the right help for him at his High School and if we could, we would put him in FT here. The only caveat is they can't play sports and that wouldn't work for us leaving his Track behind. But so, far it has been a life saver and we will continue to take more classes here to get him through the rest of High School. This will be the only way possible, and we are so lucky to have this option right here. read more

My son has spent two years at High Bluff as a full time student in 9th and 10th grade. It was, and continues to be, the best decision we could have made for his high school education! He is excelling in all of his classes (including the one's he was sure he couldn't do, like 2nd year Spanish) and just finished up his Sophomore year with straight A's and awards for his school spirit, leadership, and consistent high level of effort in all of his classes. I have to take a moment to brag about High Bluff Academy. I was at my wits end with Torrey Pines High School and how the teachers there could not be bothered by my son or mentor him to become a great student. At TPHS teachers go through the motions with the goal of just pushing the kids through, not caring if they learn anything or not. Well, in my line of work if I had that attitude and work ethic, people would die. Rest assured, I do not practice the way the teachers do at TPHS. Meanwhile at HBA the teachers were top notch, dedicated and actually cared about the students. Every teacher brought their own unique approach to learning that made a huge difference in my son. We started at HBA for a summer school math class at the recommendation of my co worker. It was a 1:1 math class and my son came home and said that if he had this math teacher at TPHS he would have aced the class. He finally had an appreciation for math and knew what it was like to excel in school. It was infectious. He actually asked to go to HBA for his last year of high school. He found a great deal of academic success at HBA thanks to many very committed hard working teachers who actually care about the success of their students. Thank you HBA. Our daughter attended a summer chemistry class at High Bluff and loved it so much that she wanted to enroll full time. Now that she has switched to High Bluff she has much more confidence and is a lot happier. The teachers are much more knowledgeable than our local (top ranked!) public school. They actually teach the material instead of relying on students to get help from expensive tutors. The small class sizes are helpful too. High Bluff has an active ASB and kids feel included. My daughter is learning more and is less stressed. The classes aren't easier or watered down, the teachers and environment are superior. This review is to show the truth about High Bluff that has a facade masking the true reality of the "school," rather than to "get back" at any mistreatment. I believe that when someone gives you a hard time, give them love. This review is also to point out that people deserve to hear the truth. When something is not right, it is right to kindly standing up and peacefully speaking out about a situation so that others may benefit from the information. I went here for a few months and left because the atmosphere was so traumatic. I remember when I got a tour of the school, it seemed to good to be true; sure enough, it was. I was told very specific lies about the academics and student acceptance, to say the least. Though the site boasts accreditation, that means nothing when the education lacks fundamentals (definitely when I was there). On another note, when I was a student, the owner hardly had a minute to speak to me about any urgent concern, whether it was about safety or an unjust situation. I had to let a lot of concerns about safety of others and myself go because she could not lend a listening ear. When I called just recently to ask her how she was and to politely remind her of a promised refund, she immediately said, "I don't have time for you. Good luck with your life," before interrupting me and hanging up. This is clearly not the way to treat anyone. Per credibility, it really does not matter ethically if one is able to go through college if one is so hostile. I kindly ask to seek to improve situations (especially about safety and education) versus looking for ways to earn more money while silencing others who will not give any more money. I am glad though that I do not hold any grudges, and I am very glad to not have to be a part of this "school." I wish all the best, and I know that compassion and goodness wins. read more

As a special education teacher of over 40 years, I highly recommend High Bluff Academy for students with learning challenges. My daughter loved High Bluff for the 2 years that she was there for Math and Science. The teachers are dedicated and took a strong interest in my daughter's success. The small class size made a big difference for my daughter as did the 1 to 1 tutoring that she received. The office staff headed by Nancy and Nick were always available and my daughter felt like the school was home. They worked closely with Torrey Pines to ensure that credits were correctly transferred. My daughter took a math course at HBA and absolutely loved the teacher, Oscar. We thought the learning experience was amazing. The 'school' itself is definitely extremely money driven and more like a business as opposed to a school. My daughter was signed up for an 8 week course but at the last minute we realized that we wouldn't be able to take the last 2 weeks of the course. HBA told us that the only solution to receive credit for the course was to pay extra for 2 weeks worth of private lessons (15 hours). My daughter only received around 8 hours due to a couple lesson cancellations and we were never refunded the extra amount. read more

I can't say enough about this little school. My son takes AP classes here a la carte, and he loves it. The class sizes are so small, the students develop great bonds with one another and the teachers. The students are international, studious, kind and caring. The teachers are just amazing--they have graduate degrees and a huge love of their subject matters and their students. When the local schools closed down on a Friday due to COVID, High Bluff was fully operating on line by Tuesday morning. And they recognized that this was a time that students needed connection and learning more than ever, so they canceled spring break. My son feels completely supported by this school, and looks forward to every class. It's not cheap, but it's worth every penny. read more

High Bluff Academy was clearly the enabling factor that brought success to our daughter's academic achievement during the 2011/12 school year in Math as well as promoting much needed family harmony as well. Not all students are a good fit for a 1 to 35/40 ratio in Math and Science in our lovely California Public School System. Torrey Pines is a fantastic school but public school is just that... public school these days. ( I know as I taught it for 30 years in another district in the area) My daughter was the only student in the Algebra class at High Bluff, taught by an outstanding and dedicated teacher who was able to connect with her on all levels. She was able to attend Torrey for all other classes, which were great and take her 4th period at High Bluff. I was fortunate to be able to transport her back and forth which is not an option for everyone, but well worth it. Her self esteem soared and she loved Algebra. Important to note that we came in for the 2nd semester after almost failing the 1st semester at Torrey with 40 students in the class. The TP teacher was great and truly cared, but one can be expected to give individual attention with class sizes as mentioned above. My child needed some individualized help to process the material, and she received it at High Bluff. She also attended for Science during the previous summer with 6 students in a class and another outstanding teacher whose love of Science and teacher was evident. Yes, it is very expensive as most "good things are" but we weighed our 2 summer's vacation plans vs our daughter's self esteem and academic success and had lots of "Staycations," Hence we have a child who actually learned something. Small classes, so good teacher to student communication. Lessons are well planned with great additional support should students require this. The only draw back is some of the parents. As they pay for their child's education they feel this gives them a right to get any result they wish. Torrey Pines has a great reputation. It just wasn't great for my child. My child's true potential was not being fulfilled at TP. We started with a math tutor at High Bluff because my son drifted off and got lost in a sea of students in his huge TP math class. He was always playing catch up and felt uncomfortable asking questions during class. Our child enjoyed, respected and liked his math teacher at High Bluff, and we choose to finish the class and take the credit from High Bluff. We were able to easily switch out of his TP class and work the class into High Bluff because they have the same bell schedule. HBA's classes coordinate with TPHS and CCA's. Our child actually ended up liking math. We then signed him up for Chemistry after school because he was falling behind again at TP and not getting enough teacher time despite coming in each lunch period. After we saw what was possible at High Bluff Academy, we enrolled our child in there full time spring 2011. He is now in his second semester in HBA's Full Time High School. My child, who is NOT a morning person, starts his classes at 10am which has eliminated most morning fights. He stays late two times a week and because he is taking group plus 1-on-1 classes is able to take and handle 7 courses (1 1/2 semesters of Math, English, History, AP Psyche, Science, PE, Marketing). He works faster one-on-one and can accomplish so much more in less time. My child has an amazing relationship with each one of his teachers. They know him well personally, he's not just a number to them, and they can come to him about assignments as easily as he can reach them when homework questions arise. He is fully accountable for all his actions and can't get away with hiding in the back of a classroom anymore. Jill Duoto, and Staff are intelligent, capable, caring, firm, and fair. Jill is accommodating with each individual student's learning needs and truly cares about each student and their family. School no longer seems like a harrowing experience to our child. He enjoys participating in class discussions, has gained confidence, and is realizing his true potential. We love what High Bluff has given to not only our child, but to our family. We are very confident that colleges will get to see our child's true potential. High Bluff has provided us with this confidence with their individual attention, guidance and accommodation of learning style. Our child's good friend switched to Full Time at High Bluff Academy this fall 2011 after hearing us speak so highly of the school and they are equally as grateful to Jill, Nancy and the rest of the staff at HBA as we are! read more
