Great course. At first look it seems easy but it's a pretty tough course to play. I enjoy this course and is one of my favorites.

Live close by and absolutely love this links-style track!!! Although it kicked my arss the first time playing it, I seemed to have learned my lesson and have played it fairly well for a 10-12 hdcp. Plenty of challenging holes with risk-reward options and actually plays fair the more you get to know it. The course is kept in great shape, especially the greens and as most people take a cart due to the big elevation changes, I prefer to walk. As I typically walk this course, my only gripe is the lack of yardage markers, especially no 100 yd. stakes in the fairways but seeing as the carts have GPS on them, I see why. read more

Sometimes I feel like I shouldnt review places out in the country, because I want them to remain secret. Sometimes I might even feel a little bit dirty if they're near where I grew up. High Bridge Hills (HBH) is one such place. It's only a hour and 15 minutes from Manhattan in beautiful New Jersey. This course is a great test of golf, and it sets up like a links style course as they allow the fescue to grow all season long. Thus, the course plays much easier in March or April when the fescue is merely a minor rough, but come back in August or September and that fescue will be 1 to 3 foot tall. Hit it in there, and you have low probability of even finding your ball, let alone being able to hack it out. Lovely rolling hills, elevation changes, quiet forest, it has it all. There is a grass driving range, but it is only about 220 yards long, so it's not great for the driver. Also, this course does not have a nice clubhouse, it's merely a makeshift hut with burgers and dogs. The reason is that the course is owned by the town (the only reason this golf course was built in the first place was to keep the land out of developer's hands during the real estate boom) and they couldn't justify the use of taxpayer money on an extravagant clubhouse. Saving tax payers money? Gee.... what a novel and refreshing concept. read more

Value wise, this is a fantastic course. Some holes require premium on ball striking. My foursome went mid week and paid $40 pp. I was surprised how well maintained this course was, especially the greens. People just need to make an effort to rake the bunker after hitting out of one. I like playing this course once or twice a year. It's about an hour ride from my house, but it's worth the trip. A challenging link style course with a few 'blind' shots. Prices are not terrible and they do have specials from time to time. I just played for $29 on a "Senior Appreciation Month" special (with a free sleeve of balls) Greens were pretty fast... fairways well maintained and plenty of places to get in trouble. read more

Since Spring is right around the corner (just pretend that snow isn't out there today) I thought I would toss out a review of a golf course that I'm looking forward to playing this spring. I used to play a LOT of golf back before I became a taxi for my kids and their sports, but these days I don't get out nearly as much as I would like to play. I really have a bit of a love-hate relationship with the game these days as I no longer play as well as I did when I was playing 1-2 times per week...but that's to be expected I guess. I have a similar love-hate relationship with this golf course. First off, the course is beautiful-the links style layout, challenging holes, beautiful views, the quietness of being out in the "country" all make this a very nice experience. That said, this beautiful layout with challenging holes will smash your ego if you can't keep the ball in the fairways because the thick "gorse" will swallow your ball like a python swallowing a rat. I actually prefer to play challenging courses, but on a bad day, this one can bring you to your knees. You can watch your ball enter the thick fescue, you can walk into the thick fescue praying you'll find your ball, and you can literally be standing on your ball and never know it's there. If you're playing here in the summer and you DO find your ball...just pick it up and toss it onto the fairway-take the stroke-because I've watched more than one person snap a club trying ot hit out of the thick grass. Seriously though, this course is a nice test of your abilities on the links. Not too long, but a number of blind shots, tough dog-legs, even elevation changes can all make this a tough round. Before you tee off, head over to the range and putting green. Greens fees aren't too bad for a course like this. They still don't have a great clubhouse, but I'm not looking for a membership either so it meets my needs just perfectly. read more

My favorite course, in the countryside , very peaceful, the clubhouse is small but the workers are very nice and greet with a smile. It's affordable and has a great 250 yd grass range and nice putting green. The course is ALWAYS in great condition, I know because I play here twice a week since its my local course. Doesn't compare with any other courses in this area. The big challenge of this course however is if you miss the fairway you could obviously be in the rough but more than likely you are in the 2 foot tall fescue. Take my advice and drop the ball and take the stroke. Also they have an amazing instructor who has reasonable rates for lessons. I would recommend this course for any golfer since its a pretty challenging course from red or black tees for the better players and for the beginners or intermediates the gold and white tees. read more

A quaint little golf course tucked away in the Highbridge section of New Jersey. The course itself is quite challenging with many of the holes playing adjacent to one another. Most of the fairways are tight with some level of hazard between the connecting holes. The Overall condition of the golf course is fair. A majority of the greens had many unfixed ball marks and the fairways Showed signs of use without repair. The divot repair mix on the golf cart was empty as was most of the divot repair mix buckets on the tee boxes for the par threes. On several of the holes, you get a very panoramic view of the surrounding area. Hole number four gives you a picturesque view of the local reservoir. The beverage attendant, Amanda, was a lovely young girl whom provided us not only with refreshing libations but also a wonderful local history of the area. The pro shop, while small in size does have certain necessities including a decent selection of fine cigars. Overall this was a good to very good golf course which Is a fair value for the price paid. read more

1st time playing here on July 3. Myself and 2 others in my party. When I arrived at 9:00 it seemed chaotic - lots of people in the lot and lining up to start. The place is not well- marked with signs - where the entrance to the clubhouse is, snack bar, practice tee, hole #10, etc. Cart brakes were loose and steering pulled to the left - the carts felt as if they have not been serviced or replaced since the 80s. Check in was smooth and friendly. However, the cart boys and starter seemed overwhelmed with amount of people who showed. Tee times every 10 minutes. Nobody offered to assist with my bag or volunteer to show me where the range was (clue...it's well hidden in the back!) Found a greens fee on GolfNow.com for $57, so saved a few bucks off the normal rate. Had to book 6 days out to get a decent time. For some reason, all parties had to start on #10 this day- Pace was slow-ish until finally after 11 holes the ranger said he would try and pick things up ahead of us. So that's the service and facilities - now the course - it's tough! For a high handicapper such as myself, every hole was unique, but challenging. If you're off the fairway by even 10 feet, you've lost your ball in the rough or trees. Several greens had no outlets to the sides and back - needed to approach with caution. And let's not forget the slope on each hole - the front 9 is all downhill and the back pretty much all up! At the turn, the bar was packed with old men and the 17 yo waitress was in a tizzy - waited 10 min for a hot dog and beer and then had to leave... So, if you want to pay over $50 for a tough course that will eat at least a dozen or so balls and fair to poor service, this is your place! Sadly, in NJ it's so hard to find tee times on weekends, we're forced to play public places like this. read more

Hidden gem in NJ just off route 78. Beautiful, dramatic, challenging links course with a nice back story. The town apparently purchased it from a farmer who was thinking of selling to a developer. The town couldn't afford to expand the local school to accommodate the new kids the development would bring - so they paid the farmer and opened High Bridge Hills instead. And what great luck for us golfers. It's a tough layout that puts a premium on accuracy off the tee - especially when the tall grass is up. No two holes are alike - and many are dramatically different. Some reachable par 5s. Some arduous par 4s. And a variety of long and short par-3s, including a 115 yarder and a 230 yarder - over a natural gorge, no less. In fact the easiest and shortest hole on the course - the 115 yard par 3 - follows the toughest - a 460 yard par 4 with an uphill blind tee shot. Great pacing, great fun. It's a public course that's in generally nice condition. Good driving range and putting green. No houses in play except at one or two spots at the very perimeter of the course. You'll contend with a few ball marks on the greens, unfilled divots in the fairway, and a less-than-reliable fleet of golf carts. But the price is right, the clubhouse is no frills but friendly, so the value in my mind is high. read more

Great link course in great shape at a great price! Many challenging holes some with blind tee and fairway shots. Most of your shots are not on level ground. Bit of a drive, but easy to get to. Definitely worth playing here a couple times a year. read more

I have played for 3 times so far. I experienced that their electric carts run out of battery for ALL 3 TIMES!!!! (I want to say I am not even big or fat. I am normal height & weight Asian woman.) I also ALWAYS find 2-3 carts left in the middle of the course. I saw someone left a cart right in front of lady's tee one time!! I love the course, it's well maintained and clean. There are not so many trees in between holes, so there is less chance for OBs, there is not so many fallen leaves in Fall. Cart is the only problem. When I start feeling the cart moves slower, I really can't concentrate on golf... read more

This was a very well maintained municipal course. Links format. Poorman's version of Ballyoween. The course seems short based on straight yardage. However, the course plays much longer because of elevation changes. A lot of blind shots. A good value. No real amenities. read more

I like playing at High Bridge, but the golf rate is too much for this course. not worth the price so my group does not play there that often. once a year at most. It is not a 'walkable' course must use a cart. we like to walk. Also can you 'paved' the parking lot. Gravel? really! read more

I'm an annual member at High Bridge Hills GC. I am currently working on my 8 HCP. There are a number of high level top amateurs who are members at High Bridge Hills. I think there's a reason for this. First, the course rewards those who can hit it moderately long, but more importantly straight. Hit your ball in the fescue, and you are dealing with either a lost ball, or practically unplayable ball. It's a good course to learn to groove your game by keeping it in play. Second, the wind on this course keeps the bugs down on many of the days during the summer, but also creates challenges regarding club selection. While I hit my 5 wood about 210-220 yards, there have been days when you have a head wind requiring your 215 club to reach the green at 150-160 years away. On the flip side, my 275 yard drive can easily reach 325 down wind. Hackers here will easily lose 12-15 balls. There are elevation changes, side hill lies, flat lies, you name it. Greens are above average for a muni/public access type course. read more
