I watered them once a month just like the Salmon family always said to do. Not one single plant came up this year. Quality is not good at all - half of the plants are waterlogged to the point of root rot. Over half came infested with spider mites and aphids. Currently isolating ALL of them because they came all packaged together so the pests have likely spread. There's just no way that the infestations weren't noticeable before packaging and sending them. read more

They were having a sale. I placed an order for some ice plants on 4/21/24. I received a shipping notification on 4/26/24. My order arrived on 4/29/24. The plants were carefully packaged, are healthy looking, and seems ready to be planted. There was a little of bruising, but not bad for having crossed a few state lines. I ordered $200 of plants in February. They shipped March 17 for delivery March 21...not ideal for live plants but acceptable. On March 21 the tracking information said they would be delivered March 22...not terrible. On March 22it said it would be delivered March 24. A week is too long in transit for live plants. On March 24 I got the attached notification saying that it was in Kentucky (I'm in Virginia) and that it would be delivered between 1:30 and 5:30. It is still saying this at 7:00 PM. I called the company and they told me to wait a few days and see what happens, go ahead and plant them and if they don't survive they'll replace them. So basically: We won't put in any effort. We want you to wait to plant or spring garden until it is convenient for us, then go through all of the work to plant it and if you're garden is a disaster because our plants sat in a box for 10 days, then call us again and wait on hold again and maybe we'll send you a replacement. Ordered several bearded iris from them in fall of 2023. Perennials don't usually bloom the first year. They are starting to bloom this year (2025) and so far at least one is the wrong iris. Asked them for some sort of replacement since I really dislike the color of the one that bloomed, and they pointed out their one year guarantee. I get that they don't technically have to do anything, but since there's no way to verify the correct iris (they all were labelled with the correct names when I received them) and since they generally won't bloom until year 2, I would think they would be a little more flexible on this policy. I am a land manager, with a Masters degree in Natural Resource Management specialized in native vegetation and restoration practices. I ordered the "Meadow Native Wildflower seed mix", and grew this in our greenhouse before using the seed for restoration in a wild landscape. Lucky I did this, because the seed mix contained Persicaria maculosa (Lady's thumb) an INVASIVE SPECIES. Further, I found Thlapsi arvense (field pennycress) listed in one of their seed mixes, which is considered an agricultural weed and a very pesky species that has escaped urban environments into wild habitat. I emailed the HC Botanist 7 months ago with this concern, have never heard a word back from them. DO NOT TRUST THIS SELLER!!! read more

I bought 4 New Mexico olive trees at $14.98 each. they were 3" and only one had a leaf‍ pathetic! They arrived side lying in a box. All the dirt was bone dry and shook out oland away from the roots. I feel taken advantage of since I didn't see what I was getting. these were 2" pots! I bought a lady banks climbing rose locally for the same price, it came in a 6" pot, and they are 3 feet high. I bought two preplanned perennial gardens from them. All of the plants were very small and many of them were dead and full of slugs. After I planted the ones that were alive, the slugs ate them and most have died. I bought all of the plant vitamins and everything they suggested. None of it was worth it. Go on better homes and gardens website and get a preplanned garden map and go to your local greenhouse. High Country Gardens is a scam company that sends the plants in a box that's closed. It takes at least a week to get delivered to you house and by that time everything is half dead or completely dead. Save your self 500.00 and support your local nursery. I have bought a lot of plants from HCG and generally had good results. I am surprised they have quite a few poor reviews lately. The only two criticisms I can make based on past orders is: 1). Sometimes it has been hard to know when I am going to get them and so they just wind up showing up at some point. 2). A couple times there was one very scrawny plant in the batch (I normally buy perennials, in qty of like 5-10 or so) that wound up slow to take hold or maybe didn't survive. I bought some salvias from them recently. HCG showed May as the month for them to get shipped out to our climate zone, and they did. They were responsive in responding to my inquiries about when they would be shipped. I was a bit nervous because Fedex put a delivery date that was like 10 days from when they received the plants. I was worried the plants would be dead by the time they were delivered. In actuality, it wound up 7 days, but that's still a long time. However, the plants were just fine. They had lost some leaves during shipment, but still had plenty of healthy leaves left on them and looked as good as I would ever expect for a plant you order online. The way they were packed was excellent. I am totally satisfied with HCG at this point in time. read more

I order from this company because I live in high desert country where it is difficult to find plants that do well here. The salvia, recommended for this area, arrived with most all of its foliage dried to a crisp with additional dead material on five of its six tiny branches. I Emailed a photo of said plant and asked them to advise. Their response was that the true value of a plant is in its roots, so please tip the plant out to make sure the roots are viable and if they are, plant it immediately. For one, it is October and it would be suicidal to put a plant in the ground now, and two, I have paid for a healthy plant along with a healthy shipping fee. I feel that this 'customer service' is ludicrous and will never order from them again. read more

I'm sure the bulbs will grow and bloom. I gave this 2 star rating because it is impossible to reach their customer service. I have tried three times and had to listen to their insipid recordings for 20 + minutes each time. I finally gave up and called a local garden shop for help. Even though I bought the bulbs from HC, the local shop answered my question with NO HOLD TIME. I should have gone to them in the first place. Goodbye HC. Your customer service is dreadful. read more

I couldn't bear to be one of those 1 star reviewers so I threw them an extra star. Basically my wife desperate for Milkweed (she's big with the Monarch butterflies) had me trolling the web back in May of this year (2019) for a seller to ship these out since they weren't available locally. I ordered from HCG and another seller on Etsy. Neither company end-up having the flowers in-stock though I wasn't told this anywhere at the time I ordered. I found this out after waiting roughly a week for some tracking info about my order. When I called I was informed that they were having a hard time getting this flower in and it might happen later this year (when caterpillars aren't around). She asked me if I'd like a refund or an credit for the amount since waiting wasn't working for me. I graciously accepted a credit, thinking I'd just keep my eyes open for something else. Today 10/5/19 I received Milkweed at my door. Confused, I contacted HCG and spoke with Penny who found the order and a memo about me calling in, but saw no record of a credit. She kept advising me to plant these since returning them would incur me a return fee. I stated that I had been given a credit and no longer needed these plants. While she read through all my info I heard her read out loud that the price of the Milkweed had even gone down from when I ordered. She spoke with her supervisor and returned no more clairvoyant than before I was put on hold. She reiterated that she had no record of a credit and she once more advised me to plant the flowers and stated that somehow my order had "slipped through the cracks" but offered no recompense for the mix-up. I wasn't trying to play the system and get something for free. They didn't notate the details of my call accurately enough originally in May to have any other stance when I called in 5 months later than to imply I'm a liar. Now I have plants I don't need that and a very unsympathetic company on the other end basically giving me no other option but to plant them. I told them it was bad business and I would not do business with them again. I just received my order, 3 salvia plants, and I couldn't be more disappointed. Little stubs, packed poorly, and doubtful if they'll grow. I have bought plants from HCG for years, but in the last 5 or 6 years, the quality has really suffered. They have varieties that I can't find anywhere else, so I have kept trying them, but it isn't worth it. Too many plants die, even when planted in the same conditions as similar plants from other sources. HCG keeps their promise to replace plants that don't make it, but too many of the replacements also fail, so it takes multiple years to try to fill in the holes. read more

The best thing about HCG is the variety of plants they carry that are either native to the Southwest or other plants that have been tested and proved to grow in this area. The selection & in stock availability is rather small, but better than other Growers who don't even offer these hardy plant varieties. I've been ordering from HCG for years & am basically satisfied with the service & quality of what I have received. Most problems seem to occur when immature plants or very small plants are shipped- these being the least likely to survive. If you know what it is you are looking for & take the time to Read the Description & Care guides that are given, I believe you will also be satisfied with HCG. read more

I ordered 6 plants from this company for bees and butterflies. These plants came to my house and were not much bigger than maybe 2 1/2 inches in size. They looked like there was no way these plants could make it unless but I did my best and put them in a small pot to get them larger to even consider putting them in my yard. I have ordered online before and received nice healthy plants but these were horrible and right away I knew didn't have much of a chance to survive. Well they didn't make it and I contacted the company with no response. Do not order from this company I wish I would have looked them up here before using them. read more

I placed my order and received my package about 2 weeks later. I ordered all Asters. 2 were alive and 2 were totally dead. I called them and they sent me 2 new replacement plants which I received about 2 weeks later, which was today. I was here when the UPS delivered my package. I received one tiny plant that was healthy and another plant that was so dry that there was no way they could have watered it before they mailed it. It was totally dead. I called them within 20 minutes of receiving my package. I, of course, was a little snippy with the company representative that answered the phone. I told him my problem, let him know that they had already replaced 2 of my plants already and he put me on hold. When he came back on the line he told me that they couldn't replace the dead plant they sent me. I could take a company credit or a refund. I asked for the refund and let him know that I would be writing a review about their company. I would never order from this company again. Absolutely the slowest company I have ever placed a order with... place in middle of march and the order said shipping out that same week, also received an email that said the same thing.. called 5 times a few weeks ago never got through to anyone.. then received an email a month and a half later saying it will be another 3 weeks for it to ship out.. and then it takes me another 5x times calling to finally reach someone and they said the have a lot of cancellations right now and it will be up to 2 weeks to see my refund but if it doesn't come through don't worry it will eventually... so you accept my funds immediately but take your time giving it back when I'm not satisfied. read more
