My favorite Nursery in Albuquerque. Good selection, staff is knowledgeable and sometimes I go for a visit even when I don't particularly need anything, just to walk around and enjoy their selection. Jericho is a cute little plant nursery with a variety of both indoor and outdoor plants. They also have a solid selection of decor, lots of it appears to be imported Mexican pottery and metalwork. Bought some roses, honeysuckle, trumpet vine and potted geraniums in late April. All are thriving and I am not an expert gardener but do enjoy taking care of my plants. I get answers to all my gardening needs and help in selecting plants and products. They are an educational and a learning resource. A visit to Jericho Nursery was perfect for Earth Day weekend. They had the bounty of roses and the best employees who can answer all your questions about planting and caring for whatever you buy. We were on a mission for tree and got great information about a desert tolerant Navajo Globe Willow. I also needed another rose to fill a spot in my yard and our helper painstakingly took us through the hundreds of roses that just arrived to explain the types and scents and how to plant them for best success. On the hunt for back yard foliage and struggling to maintain what we already have, we stopped here. In the past we have had mixed luck with the employees. Wanted to give some time between visits to see if maybe attitudes had improved - nope. The employees we talked to came off as self-righteous acting as we were an imposition rather than someone willing to spend money on their products. Asked if 2 products he had recommended could be used together. He looked at and said "what do YOU think?" Ok - 1) don't talk down to me. 2) if I knew I wouldn't be asking... Seemed genuinely surprised when I said never mind I'll go someplace else where answers come without attitude. Yes, you may be knowledgeable, but sometimes people need that info make intelligent decisions. I will admit they have some pretty cool outdoor stuff. Jericho was my original gardening mentor when I bought my first home. I needed one. Growing up in the midwest, I quickly learned that planting, growing and harvesting anything in Albuquerque's north valley was an art unto itself; man, just wedging a shovel into that clay soil was a backbreaker. I originally visited because I needed help getting rid of a cluster of Chinese Elm that threatened my plumbing, and went home with stump killer. Next I was back for grass seed, then a gardening book, then a butterfly bush, and on and on. Today the business remains what it was back then: a solid resource for help. The owner, Rick Hobson, has a gardening radio show every other Saturday on KKOB, and he's all green thumbs. When it comes to plants for my outdoor spaces, I lean Plants of the Southwest or Osuna, but I still turn into this parking lot for the large (and often discount) selection of herbs/veggies/berries and, randomly, trees. I really like the tree selection, and believe me, I've broken my back shoving my shovel into north valley soil and planting more than 20 of them over the last decade. Because trees. I was told by a JERICHO employee I could receive a store credit on mt 2 Birch trees I purchased this past winter. when I asked to speak to the manager he said "Sorry you were Misinformed" per the words of the manager. No mercy for customers or exception to the policy of no store credit for me regarding my emergency water system emergency I informed him about. i am on a water system coop in the east mountains that are having to charge water haul assessment fee till they fix some leaking lines which meant I would not would not want to burden the water system using large amounts of water needed to grow 2 birch trees. he could CARE LESS about my emergency situation! I was only asking for a store credit and told the manager i could show proof of the water haul fee and that I did not want to burden the water system by having to use hundreds of gallons of water to grow 2 birch trees! He could CARE LESS about YOU HIS CUSTOMER and directed me to the FINE FINE PRINT that states no returns on clearance Items on the bottom of the receipt that is SOOOOOOOOO SMALL its NOT LEGABLE without a magnifier glass to barely read it! Its like they are trying to TRAP YOU to make a sale is exactly how I felt by having such small print on their receipts regarding their return policy! I consider this SNEAKY DECEPTIVE BUSINESS!! I went here to get grass seed for my lawn. The staff was honest and knowledgeable. I was told it's too late in the season to seed my lawn and to wait until late August. They didn't try to make a sale, they simply told me what I needed to do and genuinely cared. I left with some great information! Jericho is a great place to just walk around and look at all the beautiful plants. It's quiet and peaceful. They have amazing pottery, too! It's a dirt parking lot so don't go in fancy shoes. There's usually water on the floors too as the plants are being taken care of. It's a great spot for all your gardening needs! read more

I care in to the nursery to see what they had there. There are several large greenhouses stocked up with beautiful, healthy plants. They have succulents, house plants, seeds, vegetable plants, flowers, landscape plants, decorative garden objects, fountains, bugs( such as ladybugs) and composting worms to release into your garden for healthy soul and aphid control... and more!!! I got some seeds. There was an enormous selection!!!! The staff were also pleasant and helpful even in the current times of social distancing ( I was able to follow social distancing protocol the whole time while I was here due to the expansive greenhouse space). Went to four nurseries today, only one had an expert Gary who immediately helped me when they were swarmed with customers. He gave me details about how to grow rose bushes, even writing down what I needed to remember. I was really grateful for his knowledge and enthusiasm. Could not find anyone to help me at the other places. It is also the most beautiful nursery I was at today. Such good customer service and such a great selection of plants and yard art. This review has been a long time coming. I take negative reviews very seriously, and its especially hard to give a negative review to a local business. In this case I think there are things that need to be said in order that others can be aware of some negative business practices on the part of Jericho Nursery. I began patronizing Jericho almost five years ago when we first moved to ABQ. The houseplants I bought all came down with a severe infestation of scale insects within a week of buying them, but I hadn't noticed any when I bought the plant, and felt that the scale might have pre-existed in my new house, so I tried to eradicate it, couldn't, and wound up throwing out the plants. I never bought houseplants from Jericho again, but I continued to buy landscape and garden plants from the nursery, as I liked the way they promoted animal adoption in the store, and some of their specials were very good . Then came Covid, and Jericho's near daily emails explaining the latest way the business was operating due to restrictions. It was annoying. No other business felt the need to basically spam people every single day. It felt pretty inconsiderate, and self important on Jericho's part, but I was certainly willing to cut them some slack, considering how incredibly difficult the situation was for everyone. So this summer I wound up at Jericho to buy some prickly pear cactus. I could have gone to Home Depot, but I wanted to support local. I chose two 5 gallon pots with small (about three pads each) prickly pear plants in them and went looking for someone to tell me the price (since it wasn't marked on the plant). My jaw dropped when the staff member told me the cactus were $65 EACH. Upon seeing my face the staff member said, "Yeah it seems expensive, but cactus are really hard to grow." Prickly Pear?! Are hard to grow???!!! Maybe some cactus types are more difficult, but Prickly Pear grow like weeds. Are you kidding me? And this was not some special variety of Prickly Pear, just the regular pinkish colored plants. I shook my head, and left without the plants. On my way home I stopped and bought the same sized plants at Home Depot for $13.50 each. I felt like Jericho's mark up was far in excess of what you'd expect from just the difference between the overhead of a local business and a big box store. Coupled with the misinformation I'd been given, this felt like the store taking advantage of the good intentions of its customers to support local business. But that still wasn't enough for me to review them poorly. The final straw was my next and final trip to Jericho to buy a few succulents to plant outside. I looked for a hardiness zone rating on the labels of the plants I wanted to buy but only found a rating on one of the three types. I then went and found a staff member and asked them if they could tell me if these plants were able to survive through the winter in ABQ (succulents are often cold sensitive). The staff person said, and I quote, "They're fine. I always tell people, look at it this way, everything grows outside somewhere." People, I'm not sure if they were deliberately trying to give a non-answer, or if they were just genuinely unaware of what a bunch of nonsense that answer was. Regardless, if that's what they "always tells people" that is completely unacceptable! Of COURSE all plants grow outside somewhere! That's the POINT of hardiness zone information. It helps you plant the plants that are adapted to, and can survive conditions in your area. Anyone working in a nursery should know that. Any nursery worth patronizing should have employees who know that. I'm done with Jericho. read more

These are different times and small businesses are really struggling. I recently moved to Rio Rancho and was landscaping my entire back yard. I told the landscapers I wanted to choose and buy the plants myself. After some online research I decided to get my plants and trees at Jericho. I followed Jericho's rules for placing an online order and making an appointment. I arrived a few minutes before the assigned time and was directed to make a left turn and enter their parking lot. I parked and it took a few minutes for someone to come to help me. My husband was with me and kept fussing about how long it was taking to get helped, I kept reminding him these are difficult times and we need to be very patient and polite. When an employee came to help me, it turned out they didn't have my order, so I gave the guy my list. He worked with me for an hour, bringing plants (some of which I rejected) and trying to find a tree I would be happy with. I'm sorry I didn't get his name, he was really patient. He suggested the right soil amendments, root stimulator, and loaded all the plants in the back of the truck. He was extra careful to prop the tree so it wouldn't get damaged. I left, having spent over $500, and have been pleased with all the plants and the purple plum tree. I need about 10 more plants to complete my yard and I will return to Jericho. I took off a star because the nursery didn't have a second tree and didn't have some of the plants that I wanted. The process in the parking lot was a little chaotic, but once I had a person helping me things went very well and the employee was very knowledgeable about compost and the right fertilizer to make the plants happy once they were in the ground. I read another recent review (during this Covid-19 time when people weren't allowed inside the nursery) and found her remarks to be somewhat unfair. All of us need to be patient and understanding that shopping is going to be a little different and will take more time. If you shop for plants in the next few months hike up your kindness and lower your expectations for a quick trip to a nursery. read more

We recently had a wonderful experience at Jericho. I'm in a wheelchair, so I can't easily get around on gravel or dirt paths. Right after we parked, one of the employees came right to the car to see if we needed help or directions. We explained the problem and told her we had a list of bedding plants we were looking for. She took the list, found the plants, brought them to the car to see if they were what we wanted. After she loaded the plants into the car, she lingered a bit just to visit, inasmuch as we had previous home locations in common. Unfortunately, as soon as I walked inside today the first person I see is an employee behind the register not wearing a mask. I really appreciate this in a nursery as finding the right answers is not easy if you choose a big box store. The staff won't hound you if you just want to spend time looking. They have a great selection of just about anything related to your yard, garden or outdoor decorating. I always try to give back to our community and to support and promote local businesses as much as possible; well, today I'm sad to say that I will NEVER support or recommend Jericho Nursery ever again! I saw online that they're offering curbside pickup and I was so happy and excited to give my business to them instead of big box Lowe's. I placed my order online, selected my pickup time and never in a million years would I expect to receive the horrible treatment that I did when my family and I went to pick up our order. 1. We pulled up to their designated waiting area in the next parking lot over by an oil changing place at 12:20 (our appt was at 12:30pm). When the employee (later identified as Rick) came to my car, he asked me if I had my list and an appointment. I said, "Yes, sir, I made an appointment online and I also ordered online so I don't have an actual list with me." Rick told me, "Well, we don't have time to read your order" and he walked away and signaled for me to pull out onto Alameda and drive into their nursery lot. (I guess I should have seen the red flag based on his comment, and the lack of traffic safety is a definite hazard!) 2. As I proceeded to pull into the nursery parking lot, asked two separate female employees if I needed to park in a specific spot and they both just ignored me. So I pulled into the 4th parking spot and waited for assistance. (Red flag again when they looked at me and kept walking and when employees with masks were walking around and just walked past my vehicle). A few minutes later, a blonde haired woman pulls into space #1, a blonde haired woman wearing a mask pulled into #2, and another woman with grayish hair wearing a mask pulled into #3 ---within seconds, employees were at their driver windows assisting them. (Another red flag, but again, I give the benefit of the doubt and I thought they're making their way to the vehicles and we'll be next. NOPE. Not the case). 3. We waited for a few more minutes and then I got out of my vehicle to find assistance. I thanked a musician for his lovely music and he was thankful and very friendly. He asked if I had been helped and I said, "No sir. I haven't. I was hoping to find someone who can help me." He pointed and said, "That man with the hat, Rick, can help you." As I walked toward Rick to ask for assistance, the first words that came out of his mouth were, "GET. IN. YOUR. CAR" in a very rude demeanor. I said, "Hi Rick, I apologize for getting out, but you saw me in the waiting line- we were first in line patiently waiting, and my family and I were the first ones to park here. We were waiting for quite some time and no one has bothered to help us--" he cut me off and said, "Get in your car. You can't be out and you'll just have to wait"--again, extremely rude. I told him that I, "didn't appreciate his demeanor and I especially don't appreciate the lack of service and sincerity especially when I'm trying to support local businesses" and he interrupted me again and said that if I "didn't like it, then I should just leave". So, I got in my vehicle and left. Mind you, in parking space #5 was another blonde haired woman and her adorable toddler son standing outside of their truck talking to another employee calmly and nicely. I have never been treated by a business so poorly in my entire life. In a time when we should all come together more than ever, I've never felt more divided and horrible. This is NOT how you treat people and I've never experienced treatment like this before. I can't help but feel like this goes far beyond unprofessionalism. I will never support or recommend them again and I hope you never get treated like this - ever. read more

Better business would be decent prices and more sales. Left Empty handed and wouldn't go back unless they had a specific plant I wanted. They are EXTREMELY knowledgeable about the plants, watering techniques, new plants, existing plants, everything I could think to ask. I have always used this nursery. It is hard to manipulate around the store. Both my husband and I have shopped here for a long time and spent a lot of money at this business. I have asked to help us to get some plants in our car due to lifting restrictions well this lady behind the counter and she was snotty with such a bad attitude. She then told me I was not nice to her. I wanted to just get some help with getting plants in car. Her attitude was bad her supervisors did nothing other than argue. All ADA-persons who need assistance this is not the store for you to go to. Many more nurseries and maybe someone who doesn't treat a customer poorly. read more

I spent over $100 on annual flowers, ranging in price from $4.99 to $7.99; three of each type for a total of 18 plants. In a week, at least one of each type were dead, despite watering. If I am equally watering all of them, it would seem that all the plants would all thrive. So I contacted Jericho to just request an exchange and was told that "sorry, we cannot process an exchange or refund" which essentially meant that they do not back their products. I try to support local but it's frustrating that local businesses do not always support the customer and back their product especially, in this case, when it costs very little for them to seed a plant. I guess saving a few bucks is worth the cost of a customer. Now onto Lowe's or Home Depot. read more

RUDE Customer Treatment + DESTRUCTIVE recommendation = never going here again. I had a soil issue (I tested my soil), plus heavy winds, plus a few other issues resulting in having to start over after my spring seedlings failed or became unhealthy. Essentially I had to start over during summer, went to Jericho for some more grown plants as it's too late/hot to start brand new seedlings. It's summer, it's hot, and I'm a newbie. I rely on google, research, and the guidance of those with more experience (eh hem, like people who work at a nursery). I was happy with the selection I found, lots of good plants on sale. By the time I got back to the register area, it was just a few minutes past close. I've worked in retail myself so I did my best to be cordial and even asked "Where are your pest solutions, and if it's too late I will just come another time, I understand you guys might want to get out of here." The tie-dyed t-shirted dude said, "No, no problem, it's in the back." When I walked into the door, there was a group of around 5 employees laughing loudly and yammering away about their weekend and partying. My request for help fell on deaf ears, as they continued chatting away so loudly they couldn't even here me. I didn't want to interfere, feeling bad I was past the hour. I figured I could find what I was looking for. Many of the bottles were of the same brand, the labels looked quite the same, no real organization. I found myself also feeling uncertain of my choices... After 10 minutes the group disbanded and the manager came at me with a yelling and frustrated tone, "Can I help you?" The funny thing? If they had asked me what I needed in the beginning, I would have been out of there in a minute! Now it's awkward. I asked if she recommended the Neem which she hurriedly said "yes" to. She also YELLED at me when I told her I had a soil issue, interrupts me to yell "NO IT'S A WATER ISSUE" without even really knowing much detail. She proceeds to recommend a fertilizer that was NEON BLUE in color- which was ignorant, as I'm an organic gardener. Oh it gets better. The front gate had been shut and so the guy (who I thought was cool in the beginning) had to let me out. He opened the gate so narrowly, there was no way I was getting through without scraping my car. When I asked him to open it wider he responded annoyed, "You'll be fine." Wow, really? Hmmm, and WHO will pay for my car if it's dented? He had ZERO care or regard. I had to press for him to open the gate more, which took MINIMAL effort! The VERY. NEXT. DAY I went to Osuna, where I spent **$180.** There was a much bigger selection of amendments and pest control. The guy who helped me actually cared and said, "Oh no, I would NOT use Neem right now. It's way too hot and it will probably BURN your plants." OMG WOW thank you for actually caring enough to tell me that!! So not only was the Jericho staff a bunch of jerks and I went there- but they let me walk out with a "solution" that was likely to KILL the plants I purchased from them. I will never go here again- Jericho, you have completely lost my business forever. read more

I went to this nursery looking for a shrub that I could plant in a shady area near my house. When I went there, I had no idea what I was looking for. After being there for more than 30 minutes, and being ignored for all that time, I left still now knowing what I was looking for. I stopped by on Friday to buy a house plant. It was about 15 minutes before closing time and there were no other customers there. I pulled in and parked where I had parked the last two times. As I was getting out of my SUV one of the employees very curtly told me I needed to park in a parking spot. Huh? There are no designated parking spots other than one handicapped spot. Nothing that says where to park, no lines drawn, nothing. Further, what difference did it make when there was no one else there. No difference at all, he was just being mean-spirited which is a nice way of saying how I would normally describe his behavior. Then I looked around for someone to help me. I went into their main area where you check out and was offered assistance. I asked about my requirements for a plant I could have outside in the summer and inside for the winter to which he said, "any of them". I asked for him to be more specific or to tell me where the plants were. He pointed to the next building, and when I asked for help, he begrudgingly accompanied me next door. I further requested something colorful as almost all of the plants were green or variegated, nothing really special. I did spot a croton and another plant that looked interesting. When I asked about the other plant and what it was called, he rattled off the Latin name for it. I was unable to understand what he said so I asked him to repeat the name, and again he rattled it off so fast I still had no clue what he had said. I then asked for the common name for the plant to which he said, "if you get them from four suppliers, they will give you four different names". Still no help. He could have given me the most common name, or any name other than the Latin name he wouldn't take the time to slow down and enunciate. I started looking at the Crotons and there was a empty pop bottle laying next to it. I jokingly asked "is that what you water it with". Thinking he would pick up the bottle to dispose of it. Nope, he didn't care about the litter, he left it laying there. The plants didn't look to be in as good of condition as others I had seen so I thanked him and left. Had been to the same location before and didn't get great service but less horrible. I have been to their other location once and had a nicer clerk experience although the grape vine I bought was the last one of it's kind and didn't look great, but hasn't died (yet). After leaving Jericho I stopped by Lowes on the way back home. They had at least 7-8 Crotons to choose from, the worse looked better than the two at Jericho, and the ones at Lowes were $12.98 vs. $25-30 at Jericho. Jericho is wonderful. They have a great selection of plants, trees, herbs, veggies, flowers - all kinds of beautiful things. There is a really cool greenhouse with fun non-desert plants so you can have different things inside your house that you might not be able to have in your yard. And they have extremely knowledgeable staff folks all over the place ready to answer your questions, no matter how weird or arcane they may be. I once took a twig from a mystery plant in my yard and brought a picture of the entire thing on my iPad, and they identified it for me and told me how to care for it. Rock on! In addition to all the plant life, they have great pottery for sale - all shapes and sizes, and frequently on sale. Beautiful stuff, and pretty darn good variety. They also sell lots of other cool stuff - watering cans, statues, metal art, those weird reflecting balls people put outside, birdbaths, rain barrels, outdoor wall art, etc. In the store inside they have endless gardening supplies and all kinds of stuff I would not begin to mess with (my man does all the gardening), and lots of really cool hanging things to decorate with. They were very helpful when we wanted to buy dirt and composted material, and helped us figure out the right stuff to buy for the vegetable garden. We also bought our Christmas tree there last year - a little bit of sticker shock, being our first Christmas in New Mexico, but they had gorgeous trees! The folks there are always friendly, helpful and just plain nice. never had a less than happy experience there, and I always recommend it when someone asks me where to go for plant-related tasks. My husband and I were shopping for plants at Jericho's on Friday afternoon. We have been waiting for them to open so we could landscape our yard. Well we picked up a few flower plants to start with. We brought them home, made sure they were watered and put them outside till we could plant them today. 2 days later and one plant did not make it, the second identical plant is doing fine. My husband brings the plant back to Jericho's, he gets there around 10.45. The gates are closed and their answering machine says that they open at 10 am. Nobody is ready. Not a good sign for business. Mike sits and waits a few more minutes and at 11 am they open the gates. He brings the plant in to show them and he wants to exchange it. He is told that there are no refunds or exchanges on annuals. Now this little 4 flower container was not cheap, so now Mike is upset. There are no signs around the place saying that there are not returns or exchanges. We have been loyal customers of Jericho's since we moved here 18 years. Well they just lost a valuable customer and a very unhappy one. I will never shop there again and tell everyone what happened to us. Well Mike left and went to Lowes on Paseo del Norte and got the same plant and saved over $2.00. I know times are tough and being self employed today is not great, 4 of my clients have been badly affected by the closures and two of my clients have closed shop. Anyone in business knows how hard it is to get new clients and it costs more to get new ones than to keep the ones you have. So now I have to find another nursery.
