Organized down to a science. Safety conscious. AND fun conscious. AND inexpensive -- $60 for a full-day of wild wetness, including a bbq lunch halfway thru...and a ten-minute HIKE to a NATURAL WATERSLIDE. Add a $4 use fee. Still a bargain for some awesome FUN in nature. You assemble at 10 a.m. to sign waivers and confess your age on the form...get outfitted with the appropriately-sized life jacket. And buy some last-minute things in the office, such as chapstick with sun screen and a water-tight container for smokes. Also pet Lucy the wonder dog. Bring nothing except a great attitude, because they will take pictures for you (having guys stationed along the route with a ready and well-practiced camera). They have SHUTTLE transportation and it's a SHORT RIDE to the put in. We had a badass female river guide...DEB....she was the lead that day, and gave us some great advice on how to row (use your core, not your arms)...easy-to-understand rowing instructions...and she emphasized the fun AND the safety. No one swamped or got pulled into the water, unless they wanted to swim...she also memorized our names and talked a little with everyone on the trip. Also her voice carried nicely over the rushing water and the screaming of the clients...Way to go! Awesome job, Deb! This is a CLASS III river...with plenty of time to recover and just float...water was a little low...so rocks were exposed here and there...and while there weren't the big big holes or crazy nuts insane hydraulics, it was still super fun and we did get super wet. Plus there are LAVA TUBE formations below, so it created interesting spinning motions for the rafting experience....plus there's a rapid where we could STAND UP while paddling (my favorite thing to do!!! Whoooo hooooo). Our guide DEB told us about the geology, the flora and fauna along the river...and she told us the names of each set....Wapinitia...Boxcar...AND she also pointed out the nesting OSPREY and pointed out the deer resting underneath an oak tree...we saw SWALLOWS, the swallows nesting under the bridge...the DUCKS zipping fast out of our way...I LOVE WILDLIFE SIGHTINGS! Deb was also encouraging to our not-so-coordinated and the young'uns...again much appreciated, Deb. One cool feature....you can bullride the nose of the raft and get completely drenched. Everyone on the left side gets wetter...HINT: Just check which side the river guide sits, that will tell you which side is the dry side. I really wanted to ride the nose but I was a tag-a-long on this family vacation, but next time. SHOUTOUT: Friendly upbeat river guides. Also nice picnick lunch...a guy named Rabbit grilled the hamburgers....the buns all stacked in a pyramid....all the fixings and condiments...nicely and evenly cut tomato slices...watermelon, beautifully sliced thin (someone has pretty good culinary knife skills!!).... freshly-baked store-bought type sugar cookies with m & m in them....being a vegetarian/vegan, it was easy to make a tomato onion pickle sandwich from what was on the table. Had they had prior warning, I wonder if they would have had a garden burger for me...it was a thoughtful picnic setup nonetheless. OVERALL: Great outfitter. Reasonable cost to purchase pics, shown to you on an IPAD, then given to you on a flashdrive. Bigtime FUN on the river...on a breezy warm, but not too warm, perfect Thursday. read more

Since the owner did not bother to contact me prior to posting their response, I will be happy to explain to Gary about my experience. Regardless of the "policy" that there is no alcohol on the rafts, there was indeed alcohol. The guide was even offered some (but he politely declined). It certainly wasn't difficult -- at all -- to "sneak" the alcohol onto the craft. It was fairly apparent. To the point of "I don't know why this customer says that we do" it is because it was known to be on the raft and nothing was done about it. Having a policy but not bothering to enforce it equates to not having a policy. Again, I would have been happy to have discussed my experience with the owner (Gary) had he reached out to me directly, but since he chose not to do so, I am left with responding by updating my original review. (Note: I do see that Gary sent me a message with the same information as his review comment -- so in a way, Gary did reach out to me personally. We did the Groupon for HDRO on the 25th and 26th of August, 2015. 11 of us total spread out over two days. The first group of 5 had Nate, the second group with the remaining 6 had Michael. Nate was a super personable nice guy who seemed to completely know what he was doing. I definitely felt safe with him guiding us in the back. Interestingly enough, on the first day, due to some mistakes we made, we ended up going backwards/sideways over the Oak Springs rapid on the Deschutes. 3/5 of us were dumped into the water (don't worry, everybody was fine). Two of us were stuck in the "room of doom" and the other was swept downstream. Nate seemed very surprised that this happened. The next day, at the same rapid, guided by Michael, the second group went in in a much more sane way, and yet two more of our party got dumped (one into the room of doom, one swept away downstream)! I don't think anybody blames the guides, but I figured I should point out that there is definitely a non zero chance of going for an unintentional swim!! A couple tips for those that are going here: if you need to wear glasses, make sure you have a strap on them. Make sure you wear plenty of sunscreen. Don't wear anything you don't want to have get soaked. Don't put anything in your pockets. Nothing. Seriously - nothing. Don't let the dreadlocks and mutton chops fool ya. Marcus is one of the more experienced guides out there and he totally rocked! Actually, come to think of it, if a guide was clean cut I'd be a bit worried. Rafting guides are supposed to be rugged and a little bit out there (and should look like Swayze in Point Break). Marcus pointed out every scenic treasure and had us do lots of fun stuff like riding the bull (which we all did), playing "Trust"v(which my friend and I did), doing a balancing act at the front of the raft while everyone else paddles to spin it in circles (which my friend and I did) and encouraged us to "swim the rapids" (which my friend and I did). Everyone else in our boat was afraid to get wet. Imagine that! Getting wet on a raft in 90 degree weather!? Ha ha Marcus gets 5 stars. The only downer was not buying the photos while we were there (there were too many to go through and too many people waiting) because the photo's online are more expensive. That and there are soo many photos taken that are almost duplicates that $60 for all is too expensive and $20 for just one is too much too. Because of this, the score dipped to 4 stars. You cannot bring pets but you can bring your kids (ha ha) so this is a great family activity as well as group fun for crazy grown up kids. read more

What a day.. From the first crew member I saw until I waved goodbye at the end of my stay, everything was great. The whole experience was amazing. Let me start off by saying Lisa is the most-badass best river guide of the company. I think she may have been the only girl guide, which makes her even more badass. The only reason I'm giving this place 4 stars instead of 5, is because the camera malfunctioned at our level 4 rapid, and we weren't able to get the pictures. Luckily, they have a backup camera company that they are trying to get in contact with that can provide us pictures of that telling drop where 6 of our 9 rafters fell into the water! Once I can confirm in a week that the backup pictures were able to be sent, then I'll happily update this review to 5 stars! We bought a half day groupon and it ended up being about $35 dollars a person, which is such a steal for white water rafting. That's probably why the camera malfunctioned, hah. This was my first ever experience white water rafting, and I'm so glad I went with this company. They really cater each experience to how each person feels and their comfortability. I'm not a great swimmer and was a bit hesitant to jump in and swim in the water but I'm so glad I did. This experience is great for all levels because they have rapids level 1-4 and there's time to rest in between and swim because it can get pretty hot. I definitely can't wait for my next water rafting experience and would come back here again! read more

Everything about this guide service was spot on! Very professional, great customer service, and GREAT guides! Our guide, RJ, was fantastic!!! So, if you get to request a guide, ask for RJ's boat. I took two kids with me (8 and 11), and the half-day Lower Deschutes trip was the perfect amount of time and fun on the river for the kids. And, it really was the perfect amount of time for me too! There's lots of good action on this portion of the river. This was my first trip with this guide service, and we had so much fun it will become an annual outing! HDRO is hands-down the best river guide company on the Deshutes River. I have taken three half-day trips with them, I have yet to be disappointed. Do usually have a Groupon going on their half-day trips which are almost to steal. Make sure that you call them in advance to make your reservation they book up quite quickly during the summer. I have gone with two separate guides one was Marcus and the other one was DJ. You can't go wrong with either guide, and I don't believe they have a bad guide on staff. Each guide has their own individual way of narrating your trip and making it fun. Safety and fun are their top priorities. Whether you are a seasoned white water raft or a first timer you'll be safe and have an awesome time. The company also offers photographers along the rafting trip on the banks. They take pictures of your group going over Rapids and even a staged pictures. After your trip is over you have an opportunity to view and purchase these pictures. They are not cheap but they're definitely worth it. They don't just burn or email you the pictures. They put them on a HDRO Flash drive. Which is a cool keepsake. In case you forgot something when you're checking in they have a wide selection of items you may have forgotten. Sunglass floats, waterproof cameras, sunscreen, and so forth. Just remember whatever you take with you could easily be donated to the river gods. There are many companies you can go with but you will not be disappointed with Hydro. They will ensure you leaving with a smile on your face and memories you will never forget. And make sure you ride the bull at least once!! read more

Like a lot of people, I've floated a river more times than I can count. Sat in an inner tube or an inflated air-mattress and went down lazy rivers with friends. Which is cool, lots of fun times, but I recently decided I wanted to go for something bigger. So I checked out GroupOn and found a deal for HDRO. Really, no secret here, GroupOn deals can be either sketchy or amazing; you never know what you're gonna get until you're there. In this case, it was a steal. The value for the experience made it absolutely, hands down, without a doubt worth it. The vibe at HDRO is chill in the friendliest of ways. The staff easily transform themselves into your insta-friends, as in instantly you're comfortable and chatting away as you sign waivers, get fitted for a life-vest, and hop in a van to get carted down to the river with your new BFFs. [Insert Chris Farley Jokes Here] On the shore, you'll split up into boats and prepare for a wet ride. We were put in a boat guided by Deign. Deign is a perpetually sun-burnt and jovial guy with the most infectious laugh. He made this trip an epic adventure, which, to be sure, was a tall order. He had two pretty fit adults, two large and in charge women, and one excited eight year old on board. Some of us were apprehensive at the start and some of us were ready to jump right in and swim the length of the river. His mission was to make us all have a good time. And he succeeded brilliantly. Deign, nay HDRO generally, caters to their customers. The more adventurous folks get crazier rides. The tamer crowd gets a mellower float. Everyone hits class four rapids and comes out smiling... and dripping... and ready to do it all over again. Pro (Really I've Only Gone Once) Tips: 1. There's a huge parking area in the back for parking... and tailgating. It's totally okay to bring your own snacks/food/drinks for consumption on the lot. Be prepared to share and mingle; I am not kidding when I say folks are friendly. 2. Bring water in a bottle with a hook or clip or some other means of attaching it to the D-rings on the raft. Plastic bottles you pick up at the mini-mart aren't clip-able and you'll have to stow 'em. 3. Don't be the douchebag who gets visibly and vocally angry about not being given a helmet. If you need one, bring one. 4. They hold your keys for you, stow everything else in your car. They have an employee hanging out in the lot area and your belongings in your locked car should be safe. 5. Put sunscreen on your knees and thighs. Just trust me. Ouch. 6. Split the cost of the photos HDRO takes of you while rafting with others that are in your boat. It makes the steep $50 price tag a little easier to swallow and sharing photos online via email or Flickr later is cake. 7. Ride the bull. You'll regret it later if you don't. read more

GREAT time with HDRO yesterday. My family of four - two middle-aged parents and two teenagers and one of them on the skittish side - had a fun adventure rafting for the first time. As the mama bear of the family, I was most concerned for one of my kids who was being very stretched by the whole experience. Our guide was so good to being supportive that before the trip was over, my "scared" child was riding the bull!! Great confidence builder for this teen, and my other teen--more adventurous--recovered very quick when she took a tumble out of the raft. She loved it! My adrenaline, though, pumped up the most when we all opted to swim the rapids at one spot. Our guide gave us detailed instructions how to float through them and make it safely back to shore as he stood by ready with a rope to toss if need be. I didn't quite follow the instructions and being off course just a wee bit meant my little jaunt in the water became a little too intense for me. I had to swim HARD to make it back to shore after having swallowed a bit of the Deschutes from being slammed in the face a few times by rolling rapids. Physically intense for me. And I did it. With our guide yelling from the shore, Keep swimming! I DID IT. And so did my skittish teenager!!! But next time, this middle-aged-out-of-shape- mama will skip swimming through those rapids and will enjoy just the rafting. HDRO makes it safe, fun, family friendly and very supportive of first-timers like us!!!!! read more

Dano our guide was very entertaining and capable on the river. The guides here are pretty energetic and give the place a bit of a party atmosphere. Looking forward to going again! Fantastic experience! Zack, our guide, was hilarious and we also felt very safe with him. Our adrenaline was constantly pumping and we were constantly singing. There is a photographer following us along the way and the photos were fantastic! I would have given HDRO 5 stars except there was a mishap with communication. Online and on the phone HDRO told me that they offered wet-suits upon request. Expecting to receive one when we got there, some of us did not dress in the warmest clothes. The wet-suits were not provided when we asked for them but we did get splash jackets. Some of my friends would have been more comfortable wearing a wet-suit but it didn't stop them from having a blast! Overall, we all really enjoyed the trip and it is an experience that we will never forget. We did use a Groupon which ended up being a great deal for all eight of us. read more

Rafting time!! Been here twice with a groupon. The staff have always been courteous, funny and accommodating to the rafting group needs. They can make your experience as intense or as relaxing as you like on your rafting tour. Tour guides are very friendly, joke around with each other and generally allow for a great time on the river. The equipment they use is very clean and well maintained. They are very well trained in river safety and instructing you what to do if emergency situation happens. I highly recommend this place for all your rafting needs just cause of how awesome the staff is and how they prioritize safety on the river. read more

Such a fun time with HDR! My wife and I did a full-day rafting trip on the Deschutes out of Maupin. Brian, our guide, was fantastic; great sense of humor, knowledge of the river and the area and always engaging us as far as what we wanted to do when hitting the rapids. One thing that set HDR apart for me was the additional 4 miles of rafting past the usual take-out point (an additional hour of rafting). The ability to get out at "swimmers rapids) and do a little floating though the rapids was fun and the BBQ lunch was really tasty (much better than the deli sandwiches I've had on other trips). This was my first time rafting- I've always wanted to go, and I was exited, but had no idea what to expect. We did the full day trip. It was fantastic, and a lot of it was because we chose to go through this company. We were a bigger group- 10 of us -and so we got the bigger raft. Because of the expertise of our guide, Mick, our boat got to do plenty of amazing things in the river that it seemed like other boats couldn't quite muster. He was funny, engaging, knew history about the area, and knew how to make our raft do all sorts of fun things. It was so awesome! I can't recommend this place enough! My Bestie and I took the 2 day river trip, having been switched from Ouzel we were told due to under staffing issues. The guides, Will (guide in people raft) and Kaya (captain of the huge supply raft) were masters at what they did. Their experience on the river was evident! Michelle was our organized, super-accommodating sidekick, who made me feel safe in the duckie kayaks, prepped meals and basically supported the whole venture in a huge number of roles. From the start Will was all about safety, respect for the river and its (animal) inhabitants, behaving in an environmentally sound way and making sure we all had fun! Will was super well versed in the geology of the area, as well as the fishing, water fowl, history, etc We met at 8:30 at the offices of HDRO and were directed to clean dressing rooms and a bathroom. After getting our gear together and riding about 45 minutes in a neat van, we were at the river for Wills very direct and well-articulated "safety lecture." I can not say enough about Will and his laid back, entertaining friendly and yet totally organized/safe approach to the whole experience. One 9 year old on the raft was giggling alot too! Though I have nothing else to compare a multi-day trip such as this, Will and his crew really made me want to come back with my family. Appreciate the dry bags and the frequent reminders from Will to hydrate and sunblock. A little unclear about the switch from one raft company to another, but HDRO worked out just fine. Food was good, without being fussy (fajitas, fruit, salad, guac, cheese, meat) One complaint: Snacks could be healthier (trail mix, kind bars, etc instead of Pringles and chips ahoy, ). My husband and I were just married less them two weeks ago and decided to use a groupon we had for a mini-pre honeymoon yesterday. What an wonderful trip we had! Mick, our guide, definitely added to the enjoyment of our experience. He shared amusing facts about squirrel bridges, was knowledgable about the region & thankfully rafting, was quick to aid when there was a collision of heads and while at times I felt an increased level of apprehension after his thorough explanations of possible events that could happen....was ultimately thankful for the information. This was an amazing experience, our group had so much fun! I could tell we got lucky with our guide Nate, he was the most fun. Nate had us doing all kinds of different fun things like surfing the waves and getting us all to stand on the edge of the raft and lock the handle of our paddles together and leaning off the side of the raft, doing back flips off the raft, just all the fun! He was extremely knowledgeable and entertaining, he showed us a great time and I highly recommend his as a guide. Such an awesome time! Our guide was Arianna and she was such a beast! My daughter and another guy got washed out early on in the trip and watching this little lady pull up a man who was easily twice her size was impressive. She was more than competent and confident in giving us direction and was super friendly. The entire trip is so much fun, it's not long after you get in the boat and go over the basics that you start getting into the rapids! The calmer parts of the river are good to see the beauty of the river and the canyons and wild life. There are many spots in the river where they have their photographers snapping away and I 100% recommend buying at least one picture, it's totally worth it! When we got to the oak springs rapid which is definitely the biggest and most intense part of the trip she had planned for us to go into it getting a little wet because we had a small group and mostly kids but we paddled as hard as we could and went straight in and got the boat fully submerged and came out losing nobody! The HDRO facilities and employees were all great! Everybody was super friendly. It's been three days since we rafting with them and we are still talking non stop about our trip and Arianna!We camp out in that area regularly and will ABSOLUTELY be going back for more rafting trips!! read more
