I haven't had this much fun in ages! All of my aches and pains, muscle soreness, and lost Maui Jim sunglasses (tear!) were totally worthwhile. Yep... even losing my beloved shades that I've had for a good five years, I can undoubtedly report that this was the highlight of my trip to the Pacific northwest. From start to finish, the fine folks of Sage Canyon run a thrilling, engaging, and educational day on the waters of the Deschutes River. Our rafts of seven paddlers each spent about six hours splashing our way down the many class 2, class 3, and a class 4 set of rapids. Not only was our guide, Paul, knowledgeable about the currents and expert at steering us toward the greatest fun (read: soakage), he also shared fascinating anecdotes and histories about the Deschutes from the railroad wars to recent floods. The day isn't just filled with floating on the water, either. Sage Canyon offers a pretty solid and satisfying lunch partway through the day - it's pretty hard to not enjoy a simple meal of grilled meat, potato salad, and chips and dip. Taking "The Elevators" rapids going solo in just our lifejackets was exciting, but cliff-jumping (30-60 feet) toward the tail end of the afternoon might have been the most exhilarating experience of all. To cap off the afternoon, grab a cup of ice cream a few doors down after bussing back to the start point, scope out the high quality (and often hilarious) photos that the Sage Canyon staff snapped along the way. Word to the wise: if you're going to wear shades on your trip, make sure they're crappy $5 ones from a street vendor in NYC. You live, you learn. P.S. WTF on not scoring FTR? Maupin, OR? Let me start by saying that I've never wanted to go white water rafting. However, when the YS signed us up for a new lawyers networking gig. I thought a couple of things one he's not a new lawyer and two we are going to be the oldest people in the party. Well, count me right on both parts, however, we were welcomed by a great group of folks and enjoyed the day on the river. We spent time on the water from approximately 10a to 4p which included some stops for body surfing in the rapids, etc. Our guide, also a lawyer, had worked summers for this location and was commemorating his time by guiding the raft once again. I thought this was good as he seemed to know the river well and ensured we had our life vests secured tightly for the upcoming rapids. The entire group laughed and giggled about flipping the boat (what would happen if not trying to do it) until they realized I had never been rafting before. Hee Hee. I took it how they meant it (they were just kidding around) and enjoyed the time on the raft. We broke for lunch for about an hour in Maupin then continued the rest of the way. All in all it was a fun time and I was glad I had the opportunity to go. read more

Bob, the owner, and his whole crew took amazing care of us. Our guides, Tony & Tommy were so professional , knowledgeable & fun! We are a rowdy group & they were unfazed! The crew set up our camp every night, schleped our stuff and cooked delicious food. They made accommodations for our many dietary restrictions. Booking, tour, food...everything was perfect! Zach was our guide and that was the cherry on top. He knew exactly how to turn the raft to get everyone on the raft super wet and offer up the best possible experience! He even does most of the paddling for you if you are lazy like I am. The tour was fantastic and was not as scary as dangerous as I thought it would be since I was a newbie. The scenery was great. I initially wanted to do a half day tour but did the full day instead and I'm glad I did. I don't think a half day would have done the experience justice. All along the way there are photographers snapping photos so you can buy the photos later if you wanted. I haven't booked a tour with any of the competitors but I will say while I was on the tour, I noticed the people and rafts on our tour way outnumbered the people on the other tours. The people on our tour also seemed to be having more fun and enjoying themselves. A competitor raft rolled by and they seriously looked like they were bored. On top of that, our food was way better...we had grilled chicken and steak (delicious and well cooked) while the other had burgers and hot dogs. Nothing wrong with burgers and hot dogs but you can tell Sage Canyon put forth a better effort than their competitors. Our tables were fitted with tablecloths (others were not) and we had homemade layer dip with our chips. They even had homemade brownies. The owner was also very friendly. Overall it was a great experience. If I were to do it again, I would apply sunscreen to my neck and knees because they got burned to a crisp. I would ask for Zach again as my guide. I would wear a hat or put my hair up in a pony tail because the top of my head got sun burned. Zach warned us when we'd hit a big wave and put our glasses/hat in his cooler so we wouldn't lose it. Staff was great to work with, and very organised considering there were a ton of people everywhere wanting their attention at the same time. As the five stars say "It is as good as it gets" We had a two day, one night trip and everything was perfect. Matt our guide was a cute 26 year old guy who delighted all of us (5 crazy ladies) by remaining shirtless 95% of the time. (LOL!) He was kind, funny very professional, a great guide, and did I mentioned HOT!! OMG! The food was gourmet quality: Caesar Salad for lunch the first day, steak, sauted mushrooms, home made mashed potatoes, salad and wine for dinner!........ Yeah, your heard right and the best part is that Matt and Ben (second guide joining the tour) did all the cooking, cleaning and camp management. We drank and enjoyed, and talked and enjoyed the view!!! That night there was a meteor shower and it was the most amazing thing ever! The guys cooked breakfast the next morning (bacon, sausage, eggs, hash browns, coffee) and packed the raft and we were on our way! Lunch again was delish and we had the best time ever! If you haven't been down the Deschutes with Sage River, you are missing out. Longest river float and best lunch oars up and touch! River guides are entertaining, professional and very good at judging how much risk to take with the paddlers in each boat. Beware of guides "Rabbit" and Lisa. They are downright dangerous. If you are going for the full day trip with lunch at Maupin City park, beware that after lunch they like to play a "prank" asking unsuspecting riders to switch seats in the raft only to go over some rapids and launch them from the raft into the river. I was one of the lucky ones in my raft to get thrown. I was trapped under the raft so long I could no longer hold my breath and sucked in water. "Rabbit" was my guide -- when I finally got back in the raft, he said, "Sorry, it's better if it's a surprise." This guy looks like a hippie, but is downright sadistic. My husband was on a different raft with Miles, a different guide. He had a great experience. The third raft in our group -- we had 20 people -- was guided by Lisa. She pulled the same dangerous prank. read more

My rafting trip was a gift from my parents on my 40th birthday, and it was such an amazing way to spend the day. I hadn't rafted the Deschutes in years, and Sage was fantastic. Our guide was Jason, and he was extremely professional and very adept at guiding us through the rapids. He was also a lot of fun. We had gorgeous sunny skies and a light breeze as we rafted down the river, and he pointed out ospreys and ducks along the way and encouraged us to try our hand at hitting the beer cans dangling from the bridge. We were a pretty mellow crew, but Jason kept us on our toes and kept us laughing.I highly recommend Sage. I want to make rafting an annual tradition! read more

My family (John, Linda, Kelly & John) took a trip with Sage yesterday and we absolutely loved it. We did the Shoshone day trip on class 3 rapids and had a great time and not once did we feel apprehensive or nervous. Victoria was our tour guide and not only was she extremely knowledgeable and funny, she guided our boat with obvious skill. Jess, a newer guide, was in our van with us and it was obvious that Sage takes the time to thoroughly train their new staff, because she sounded as if she had been working with Sage for way longer. While we didn't get to meet the other guides as well, they all were extremely friendly and confident in their skills. Today's guide was Paul and he was a very knowledgeable rafting guide and made the trip fun. The food was AWESOME which blew me away as I was expecting typically poor food, but the steaks were really quite tasty. Our rafting trip was AWESOME! We have been on a few river rafting trips before, mostly in WA. However, got a Groupon to go with Sage Canyon and it was SO.MUCH. FUN!!!! The drive out from Portland was beautiful, it was really easy to find them and they are located in the same building as a pizza co. so if you get hungry before the trip you have something to eat. Also another plus is there is a convenience store next door that sells liquor and beer, which you can take with you on the river. We hopped in the van (they have 2 that go to the river) for a short drive and then we were there. No wetsuits or booties since it was pretty warm, we just wore the clothes we had on. Dick was our river guide and he made our trip what it was. He was so fun and laidback, and he gave us all the best experience. The river was not all that scary or even that fast (some we have been on were a lot scarier) but we did get to play around, push each other off the raft, do some bull riding, and overall have a great time. The scenery was very pretty, it is dry in Maupin and it is much different than other rafting tours we have done. My favorite part by far was how friendly our guide was and how he new we were out to have a good time and we had the most fun raft on the river. 2 of us fell out and got tossed around, which made the experience even better. Our trip was FANTASTIC!! Everyone was so friendly and geniunely interested in making sure we had a great time from start to finish! Our guide Paul was very thoughtful about giving us options on how we wanted to approach some of the rapids since we had first timers with us and he wanted them to be comfortable and enjoy the trip. We purchased a Groupon for a 3 hour rafting trip that included a free photo and we had a great time. The check in process was easy and they bus you to the launch area. You then meet your guide and go over safety and the commands the guide will use. We had Tony as our guide and he was excellent!!!!! He was funny and knowledgeable during the whole trip. They then bus you back to the business. This was my first time white water rafting and I highly recommend Sage Canyon River Company and guide Tony you will not be disappointed! read more

I took an organized group trip this month with this company and they were excellent. Our guide, Luke, was knowlegable and funny and highly competent. He helped everyone feel at ease and gave us comprehensive instructions where needed. He was laid back yet in charge. They provided a really good lunch and our transportation was where it was supposed to be when we were ready for it...no waiting around. Our bus driver was cool and professional and even has his dog along for the ride. Beautiful day and really lovely trip. I could have done without some of the yahoos in other boats squirting us with water cannons, but c'est la vie...it wasn't a big deal. read more
