Came here last night with a group of girls after a comedy show and had a great time. Even on a fairly busy Friday night I didn't wait more than a minute or two for a drink at the bar and the bartenders were all friendly. Drink prices are super reasonable--lots of beers in the $4-6 range and a rum and coke was $7. Of course the free popcorn is a good selling point. Salty and freeflowing, it keeps you going back to wet your whistle. The crowd here is...a mixed bag of nuts. Lots of 20 somethings, a handful of 50+ men, and unfortunately for myself and the ladies I came with, a couple of odd ducks who made an embarrassing attempt at hitting on us. But that can happen anywhere, so I can't fault High Dive for that. The downside to the free popcorn was that by the end of the night A LOT of it was all over the floor, so be ready to find some kernals stuck to the bottom of your shoes. Otherwise, they keep things pretty clean. The guy who came around to clear our table of empty glasses was charming too, so points for that. All in all, a fun time. Oh and tons of fun music from the jukebox! Lots of 90s jams and some fun motown songs that had us dancing in our seats. read more

This is not a great bar. It is a dive bar. It is an okay dive bar. However, in the bourgeois wastes of Park Slope, this is your only salvation, and you'll thank god for it. For one year, I lived in Das Slope, wooed by the leafy avenues and the promise of better living. Convinced I deserved better than what I had been given, and believing I had earned the right to comfort, I came to Das Slope, ready to savor it. I listened to its call, and did not heed its warnings. I wanted a place I could come home to. I wanted to arrive. I wanted to never defend where I lived to my parents. And so, I moved to Park Slope, to live amongst the strollers, to live as they did. I dined on artisanal cheeses and drank wines from Burgundy. I lived over a Starbucks. But, slowly and surely, a sense of dis-ease crept over me. I'd walk down Seventh Avenue, swimming through a stream of Baby Bjorns, barely resisting the urge to knock men's caps from their heads. I looked down at my belly, fat, scant of breath as I walked the trails of Prospect Park on my way to Smorgasburg. My raging howl turned into a quiet notion of discontent. I had become comfortable, and I hated myself for it. I didn't see a way out from under it. Going back the way I came was against my nature. I resigned myself to a slow slide into obsolescence, to drink well and dine well and work well and go to Starbucks each morning and order something with soy milk in it. To be "nice." Luckily, the universe provides. Within a few short months, my life unravelled around me. My aspirations became challenged. My livelihood, threatened. My heart, broken. All which had once given me comfort became a prison, one I could not escape. I needed a $6-boilermaker special. The songs don't lie: whiskey won't heal your heart, but it'll pass the time. And there was no better place to pass the time than High Dive. A loud, noisy bar, where you could play some pinball between shots of Jameson and not have to mortgage the house to pay for it. Where you could forget the woman who left with the friends who never did. A dive bar, with all the sloppy glory the title bestows. A place to go home to. I left Das Slope after one year with no regret, turning only to deliver a Bronx Cheer and a One-Fingered Salute. Goodbye to comfort. Goodbye to heartache. Goodbye to all that. I'm happy to report that things got better, that I righted the ship and sailed through the storm. Moving helped. But I came back to the Slope, and came back to High Dive, and I remembered its truth: It's just an okay bar, compared to the many like it across this great city. But it's the only bar where it is. Everything perfect for our group of four: warm and cozy, friendly staff, nice music (but not too loud - we could actually carry on a conversation), free popcorn, reasonable prices, and not too crowded. This is a real solid, classy bar. Nice bartenders, great beer selection, good garden, no pretense, good music, CHEAP happy hour ($2 High Life!) Great cocktails, too. SO much better than Lighthouse, what this replaced. That place was such a lice-infested dump, with crappy food and nasty bartenders - all Boston fans, to top it off. Nothing more assholish than a Red Sox bar in New York. No televisions to watch the game here (which is why it's 4 stars instead of 5), but it's a great place to meet friends for a couple drinks and some conversation. On a week day afternoon this can be your boozy alternative to a coffee shop (free wi-fi with purchase). On a weeknight, it's pretty quiet. On the weekends, while the other bars are jammed with crazy loud people, this place is chill. The beer selection is awesome, and they always have free popcorn. A shot "over ice" SHOULD get you a full drink for the same price, but it depends on who is making it for you. I always write on the walls in the bathroom. :) read more

Good old fashioned bar from the folks who brought you Commonwealth. Free popcorn and a water jug (kept especially cold!!) so patrons can grab their own water without bothering the bar staff. I do wish more bars would have water out. Very cheap PBR which would mean nothing in hipster doofus land but at High Dive that PBR is draft! Which actually does make a difference. And they only charge $4 for it so double score. The other beer choices are good but pedestrian though you'll be able to try a few to ensure you get something that suits your tastes. Good spot to catch up with friends over a few pints for a couple of hours. read more

I went to High Dive for the first time last night and it was great! Super reasonably priced and had a very cozy/ dive-y vibe that I love. We sat by the back patio (5/6 tables) which had heat lamps. The bartender and the owner were both really friendly and had great recommendations- they even brought us a can of free cider and did shots with us at closing time. They also told us that they ordered blankets for the rest of the winter season. I high recommend it and will definitely be going back! read more

I have to admit something. I'm a popaholic. I'm addicted to popcorn and I can't get enough. I'll eat a whole bowl of salty, buttery goodness and swear to never do it again. Then I'll do it again. I'm also a huge fan of Cider and that's why High Dive is the only bar in New York I've been to about 3 times since moving here a couple months ago. Their selection of Woodchuck Falls on tap is delicious and the Black Cherry Cider is also amazing. Their happy hour is pretty cheap and music selection not obnoxious. I haven't sat outside since it's been really cold, and have always managed to get seats. I once thought I locked myself in the bathroom and couldn't get out. But then I was fine. I recommend High Dive anytime someone wants to hang out with me. After watching me eat 3 baskets of free popcorn in a row, they aren't so keen to hang out with me again. On my birthday I had a bad cold and I still went to High Dive for popcorn and cider. That's how much I like it. But what do I know? I'm just a popaholic. read more

This is one of my favorite bars in NYC. Free popcorn; chalkboard for leaving people drinks; cheap (or at least reasonable) pinball machine; and an outdoor space. And generally speaking, the other patrons are always very pleasant to be around, which is kinda a big deal (to me). Also, they always seem to be playing great music at least 75% of the time when I'm in there. Reasonable-to-good drink prices. The outside is very red and I like that. My friend forced me to go out on a night when I had promised myself I would stay in pajamas and watch Scandal all night. So I made her pick a place that was on the cheap side and on the super laid back side. She chose High Dive because it's got the free popcorn and she knows I like to eat. Unfortunately, I hate pop corn. But it didn't matter because I had a great time. It was a Saturday night and not crazy busy inside, no one bothered us and we were able to carry on a conversation without screaming. Some guy on here complained about the bathrooms. He said they don't have enough and that people tend to take a long time in there. Did he even go in there? Obviously he didn't notice that the walls are chalkboards and you can write creepy notes to your friends. That was a pretty good time. read more

The perfect dive bar! We found this place on Yelp because we were looking for a place to eat our burritos that we bought from the taco truck two blocks down. It was two Fridays ago when the temperatures dropped really low. We didn't want to eat our burritos outside so I consulted my trusted advisor (Yelp) to help me find a place to eat my burritos at. I loved this place because not only did it have bar seating but it also had table at the back so we were able to comfortably eat and hang out. We ordered drinks at the bar, I had their cider that was pretty yummy. The drink prices were also super cheap. I noticed that they had a back area which I feel would be great for the summer. The place was dim and lit by candles. They have free popcorn for guests too. I also really liked their decor, very chic for a dive bar. read more

The name says it all. A dive bar with some class. An oxymoron, maybe, but a fun bar that sticks to the basics of dives without all the problems and dirty bathrooms. Having voyaged here after midnight, there were many things to love about this place. Its dimly lit bar was contrasted with a somewhat lively crowd. Not too big and not too loud, but you will be saying excuse me a lot to head to the bathroom, which are clean and have lots of chalk! Up front they open up the large windows as you gaze out to Fifth Ave watching silly drunk girls getting cabs while a nice gentle breeze ruffles your hair. In the back there are some tables and some board games for playing, and some customary popcorn with all the seasonings for eating. Yes they have Old Bay and even Orville Redenbocker would admit that this stuff is damn good on popcorn. And how could I forget about the beer? They have a mighty fine selection of drafts. A solid selection of Bells and Founders and each of these will set you back about 7 bucks. If you feel that you don't have good taste or that BK is loosing its Pabst roots, then they have that as well, and its a good price for happy hour. All and all, a great place to relax with some friends, meet some new friends, run into people you once knew, or just stare at a blank wall like a weirdo. Even if you choose this last option, you will at least be with some good company and have a damn good beer in your hand. read more

And the staff was not memorable enough to comment on in either a good or bad way. I do remember drinking a fair amount and running into a bartender I know from another local bar... Some people seem to be missing the point. High Dive is nicer than a regular dive, hence the name "high" dive... like a little higher-class looking than your average dive. So, it's got the dark lighting thing going on, chalkboard paint on the bathroom walls and doors, and has hipster bartenders, but then you've also got fantastic beer and usually pretty strong drinks. It's certainly not as expensive as The Gate. The free popcorn is great. My favorite aspect is the music. The jukebox is perfect for the winter months, and there's a small but decent outdoor space in the summertime. High Dive doesn't have as much personality as I'd like it to, but it's got a really laid back atmosphere, and I appreciate that on a work night. read more

Stopped in on a whim on a Tuesday night after dinner. Nice place to enjoy a few drinks with some friends or if you want a more intimate setting you can opt for a small table. Drinks are well priced especially for the area they are located. What got 4 stars out of me was the fact that they have an old fashioned movie theatre popcorn machine. Free Popcorn! I think I may have been here at night with a crowd, thinking, "wait a minute, this is no dive bar!" But until now I had never been during the day and I am happy to say I have found my new office. Free wifi, free popcorn, $2 PBRs, $3 Yuenglings and $4 wells all day until 8 pm. Broke 100 thousand on Galaga. The bald bartender with the sideburns is hella-cool. I think this is owned by the people who own Commonwealth, which is a good bar, but something about this place falls flat. I've only been in here 3 times and 2 of those times the same bar tender was a complete dud. By that I mean when I asked about a couple of beers he either was out or didn't know anything about them. Now I'm not faulting the guy for being out of beer, but not knowing anything about any of the beers. C'mon! The first time he mumbled something about not usually working at that bar, but there he was a month later, still uninformed and useless. Pretty much my favorite dive bar in brooklyn. Full of slope dads who need to 'get away from it all for a second!' I read probably like 300 pages of Ulysses here last summer and drank maybe 40 guinnesses. But there are lots of great local offerings on their rotating tap as well. And free popcorn! And a patio! Yes, this is a dive bar, although it's on the classier end of the range. Pretty small space, so it's a little bit louder than your average Park Slope bar, not conducive for holding conversations... if you're into that kind of thing, pshhhh deep meaningful conversations are totally overrated anyway. Board games and free popcorn always make me stay for two beers; I haven't found a reason to stay longer than that.. yet. The bartenders are courteous and they know how to handle a crowd. read more
