The boyfriend and I came by for a nightcap since we were in the neighborhood. The spot may be our usual since it's nearby. It's a simple, no frills type of spot; but the best part is that they're dog friendly. They have a big patio space in the back, which is perfect in the summer. There are also multiple picnic tables indoors with a projector screen playing some sports. The bartender is super chill and friendly along with the other customers here, who seem to mostly be all regulars. Hop Shop is a nice little neighborhood bar with about 15 or more beers on tap. There was a spacious bar area, a back room where you can sit, and an outdoor back patio. On a Friday night it wasn't super busy- this is a great place to come with a big group if you want to spread out. They also have board games if that's your thing. We saw they have food available Friday/Saturday. I tried the pickle tots which I thought were really good. They have a huge selection of beers on tap. I chose a key lime sour which was actually really delicious. I bet they'll have some fun seasonal beers for fall. I noticed a lot of people brought there dogs with them, which I loved! Nifty little locals bar right across the Brooklyn Greenway 5K & Half Marathon event start that I hit up after the 16 miles I ran. I definitely needed a cold brew to celebrate and unwind after that! The Hop Shop has a very nice curated craft beer list, ciders too, easy to speak with bartenders, bar snacks available for a small fee, reasonable beer prices, a chill vibe and outdoor space to boot. There are some flat screen TV's and a large projection screen too. I sat in the front with the windows open while charging my phone and enjoyed my brew with a view. Also, a plus to me is that the bar is dog friendly, as there was a cute pup in there that someone brought in and we all played ball with. Love it. read more

This has been a great neighborhood spot for my sister for the 4.5 years she has lived in the area, and every time I visit we swing through! It has very chill vibes, which I love, and whenever I visit everyone is very friendly and brings their dogs, which makes it feel really nice and home-y. It's definitely a locals spot. Every time I go I see the same staff, which is nice and uncommon these days. The bartender (I think his name is Brian) is SO friendly and is quick to serve. I got the Victory Festbeir which was so awesome I got a second. Very appropriate, given the ongoing October festivities. My sister got a summer wheat ale and followed up with the same beer I got. She said they were great, and just what she wanted. No food (except a few snack items) is offered but patrons are allowed to bring their own grub, whether it be something from home or food delivery. They also keep a mixture of board games in the back area, which is fun when you have a group. From what I saw, they also have a bunch of activities like trivia night and karaoke night, which seems like it would be really fun. Okay this is my new favorite place! I have to admit that I decided to check this place out because I had searched hot dogs, and was disappointed that they no longer make them here (FYI)!!! However, there was so much more to love that I was fine without the hot dog when I left. The beer list is incredible. The bartender (Candace I think?) was super nice and so helpful in suggesting some beers. I had 3 sours that I loved! The inside is long and spacious and there's a very large outdoor area. Oh man - what a spot! I had a wonderful time here on a hot Saturday night in August. I thought it was too hot to go outside but their backyard is complimented so wonderfully by their awesome beer menu. The customer service was great - I loved the waitress with British accent, she was wonderful! I think we could have brought a cake because there was another birthday party who had one. Everyone said they had free popcorn but there wasn't any when we were there. That's cool! If you love beer, outdoor drankin' and have a large (or small) party this is the place for you! Really like that this place is not packed and there was a lot of parking outside, owner was friendly and so was his wife! The best part about this place is the large variety of beer they have for a very affordable price... The variety is endless and everyone here, including the other customers are so friendly it's like a family gathering even though we just met them. I really like this grapefruit beer but they didn't have so my friend asked the owners to customize it for me and it was delicious! I found this really neat and I would definitely recommend this place. This was my first time here and they have lot of seating including a large outdoor area, I think this would make a great place to host bridal showers or any parties in general. I came here on a late weekday night. It was pretty dead inside but it was enjoyable. Very quiet and chill. In terms of layout, this is probably the most simplistic bar I've been to in New York. And you know what - I dig it. Definitely the type of place to get a quick drink with friends or come by for beer after eating at Pok Pok. The beer list is huge, I can't even go into all the different beers they had. I would come back here just to go through that list and try some of the imported beers. If you are a beer lover, Hop Shop will most likely meet your expectations. If I come back and try more beer here I'm sure I will bump this rating up. The deal they had when I got there was 5 dollar drafts before 8 PM. I arrived at 8:15 PM, asked the bartender if I can still get the deal, and he said yes! Is Hop Shop my new favorite bar in Brooklyn? It's definitely up there. They have a TON of beers available. No, really. A TON. From cheap seasonal cans to $40 imported bottles, and everything in between. Bartender was super cool, and dealt with our day drinking for a full 4 hours. She also entertained our dumb questions about the beers and about life in general. They have a huge backyard, which people seem to love to rent out for birthday parties. If it's unavailable, they also leave the front windows open in the summer and you can people watch (if there are any people to watch). Their kitchen isn't open yet, so they're doing special food events every now and then. Haven't stopped by for any of them yet, but it's on the to-do list! read more

When I moved out of Prospect Heights/Crown Heights for Brooklyn Heights, I was excited by the prospects of new bars, restaurants, and businesses to explore. It took me two months to find the perfect bar but yes, I have found it indeed. I've been here twice in one week so far and that seems like a reasonable, if not light, assessment of the consistency in which I will visit this establishment. With 14 rotating taps and an extensive bottle list (shout out to my Graft and Citizen cider friends!), The Hop Shop has an excellent menu for drinks and a solid selection of eats. So far we've had the giant pretzel ($12) twice with spicy beer cheese and it's already a fan favorite. I'm looking forward to trying the flatbreads, the dogs, and the Mexican corn dip (saw peeks of it coming out from the kitchen and YES, PLEASE). They have free popcorn and a friendly service dog Jason who's very into picking up any dropped popcorn on the floor. But perhaps the thing that makes me happiest about The Hop Shop is the really chill vibe and the GREAT outdoor space that I intend to utilize until winter coats are a thing again (please god, no). Some would say I had 'too good' of a time here on Saturday and I would have to agree. Nonetheless, kudos to Hop Shop for hosting a large gathering and allowing us to generally get weird with it. The place is unassuming from the outside, but spacious enough (including a large patio area) for a few groups of friends to hang without it feeling crowded. The 5th star is for the little things they do right here; dog friendly, free popcorn, GREAT beer selection, solid bar eats ($3 mini burgers, $3 dogs) and friendly 'tenders. The Hop Shop is a terrific neighborhood spot with tons of good beer on tap (and in cans!) and the food menu is small but surprisingly tasty. Also bonus points for the prices -- it's reasonable in general and the happy hour offers $5 pints till 7 or 8pm. The vibe is Brooklyn chill in the good way: Laid-back locals and little in the way of annoying hipsters of self-absorbed parents. The bar and indoor tables are pleasant and not too loud, and they have a little known but very pleasant outdoor space. My wife and I had a wedding party here in July, inviting about 50 guests. The owners Anneli and Ryan made it happen, and served up an awesome Mexican spread in a low-key, professional fashion. It even game with corn-hole and a speaker service. Highly recommend. read more

I came here on a whim after checking out a few other bars in Brooklyn. While Hop Shop didn't have the best tap list, their bottle and can list is incredible. They had well over 100 bottles and cans, from breweries all across the United States. Since the list was a bit overwhelming, the friendly bartender was able to point us in the right direction. We were in the mood for some more hazy IPA's, and the bartender was able to recommend quite a few - the best being Greenpoint Vert Mont. Hop Shop is a nice place with a very relaxed and fun atmosphere. While the taplist was iffy, the bottle list / atmosphere made the trip worth it! read more

Again, why do all the great things move in to an area when I've already left it? The storefront where The Hop Shop is now used to be a shady bodega staffed by rude people, so I almost forgot it existed. When I saw this beauty of a bar opened up, I had to check it out. It's done up wonderfully with lots of wood accents. It had a few people it in on a weeknight, but there is plenty of space for groups in the back and backyard (which closes at midnight). While it was fairly quiet, it took a little while to get the bartender's attention. I'll chalk this up to the fact that she was friendly and chatting with every patron in there, and won't hold it against her. Good draft list of 14 beers, and a really well "curated" list of bottles and cans. Mostly craft, but with a few classics mixed in so you can bring your friend that really, really hates craft beer ($3 High Lifes and Genesees, anyone?). At $6-$7 a pint (or bottle/can) and no happy hour as far as we know, it isn't terribly expensive; just enough to show that the Columbia Waterfront District feels ready to charge the same price as other areas that are much more convenient from the subway. This bar just opened about a week ago and I think it's going to be a much-needed new hot spot in the area. The drinks were so great, the owners (who were behind the bar) were so sweet, and the atmosphere was so mellow that my husband and I ended up staying for a few hours and drinking more than we'd intended. Things that might be helpful to know: 1) The star drink was the spicy cucumber margarita, made quickly and with skill. Can't recommend it enough. 2) They have a lot of beer on tap and in bottles--great variety. 3) Free popcorn! 4) Lots of tables in the back and a nice open front window with barstool seating, perfect for a warm, sunny day. 5) Excellent service. 6) Good music played at a sane volume. This place is amazing. We were scheduled to eat at Lucali, but had a 1.5 hour wait, so saw this place on Yelp, and headed over for a beer. Amazing draft selection, was truly blown away by the variety here (as an IPA guy especially). It's a friendly atmosphere (Alex, the bartender, is super cool) with plenty of bar and table space, not to mention, a great outdoor patio.
