I didn't get to spend more than 10 minutes at this bar but I loved it the minute I walked in. The bartender was friendly and had many recommendations when I asked for a light beer. It's clean and doesn't have that smell of vomit and piss like other bars do. 2 draft beers for $10. I had just scooped up some fresh popcorn when I had to leave for my dinner reservation. The bar itself is underwhelming. The free popcorn with powdered flavored toppings is also good for when you're drinking beer and get hungry. The service from what I could tell is OK- not good, not bad. My issue with this place is the customers. Last night I was there and watched as some shady couple picked up my bag from the floor and started to walk towards the door. I got up and confronted them, and literally took MY BAG out of their hands and said, "What are you doing with my bag?" And the male dumb@ss says, "Oh, I thought this was our bag but I guess we didn't have one..." And the female dumb@ss downs her beer and quickly walks out of the bar. If you want to surround yourself with shady @ss people, or people who loudly argue about their political views that NO ONE cares about, then by all means come here. But you can find a MUCH better place with a better vibe, better clientele, and better drinks in Park Slope. Beauty Bar is two doors down after all, and that place is way better than this mediocre bar. Also, there are better bars further down Fifth Ave in South Slope. The jukebox was great (Talking Heads, REM- I got too drunk to give it a more thorough look). And the chalkboard walls in the bathroom are cool though I have a feeling it's the reason why people take so long in there. I've gone here a few times with friends on Thursday nights. This is a place you go if you're looking for a relaxed atmosphere. Its not too busy on Thursdays but the drinks are always flowing. One thing some people haven't mentioned yet is the the bathrooms. Now they are your classic dingy bar bathrooms but all the walls are chalkboards. A friend and I took it upon ourselves to start drawing in there one night. Over the next half hour we ended up with more than 8 people crammed in the bathroom drawing all over the walls. It was pretty funny and entertaining. This place is definitely a staple that I'll keep going back to again and again. read more

This is my go-to Park Slope bar. The atmosphere is very laid-back and I've never felt rushed, even while playing long games of Apples to Apples. They have free popcorn and lots of board games. The outside area is great in the summer and they have no problem with you bringing in outside food or even ordering delivery. read more

I was pleasantly surprised that it was a laid back local hangout with friendly patrons and a competent bartender. The music is not too loud, so you can talk. The window seats are money. I spent a solid 3-4 hours there enjoying the breeze and then watching a thunderstorm. The happy hour is OK - a dollar off everything, but the drinks are really strong. The free popcorn is a great touch, although the self service thing is a little sketchy. Solid neighborhood bar with free popcorn - pretty cool, huh? The crowd is mixed. I've come on a weekday and seen lots of locals and I've come on a Friday night and seen way too many hipsters. Altogether though it's a solid Mid-Park-Slope crowd - nothing new to get used to. Beer selection is quite extensive if you consider their bottles. I love some of their German variety and that's pretty much all I ordered. In the spring and summer months their back patio is a true gem - secluded from the rest of bustling Brooklyn and with nice colors on their wall! read more

Used to live across the street. The service was always good, and the jukebox is really awesome, just a bunch of burnt CDs with good early indie and garage-y (punk) rock stuff. The patio is great of course on the warmer days if you ever get sick of the crowd at The Gate. People seem to love the popcorn, but a man once brought his small child here who I saw stick his dirty, little hands into the popcorn machine. Went there for some drinks with a friend and had a pretty good time. Seems like a typical dive bar, but then I saw they had free popcorn which was a nice surprise. I'm into any and all things free, so I was more than happy. Plus, I'm the girl that wants to eat everything in front of her when she's a bit tipsy, so I had my fair share of the yellow Kernals. When the popcorn wasn't enough, I decided to order one of their pies. Apparently, pies were all they had on the menu, which I thought was a bit weird. I ended up ordering the curry chicken pie -- at least I think that's what it was called. It was very tasty. Pretty good for bar food. There's a possibility that I'm only saying it was good because I was slightly drunk, but my friend agreed with me, so I think we're safe. The bathroom situation annoyed me a bit. It's the typical dive bar with writing all over the wall. Why is that a thing? Anyway, they leave chalk in there so that you can go crazy on the walls. There was even writing on the mirror which made it hard for me to see my reflection. Also, the bartenders are a tad on the rude side. It could have been because the place was very busy, but they just seemed a bit unfriendly. But maybe that's just me. All in all it's a pretty decent place. read more

Any place that references Golden Girls in any context warms my heart, but unfortunately, they closed, and High Dive replaced them. great $2 high life special!!! gotta love cheap beer in new york! i came in during the early evening after canvasing park slope with my resume. It was hot & I saw a sign for $2 high life happy hour. The bartender was very sweet & funny - she engaged me in conversation once she found out I was new to New York & seeking a bartending gig. A lot of laughter when i asked if they were hiring, but she did give me the lowdown on the Park Slope neighborhood and recommendations for where to try (even gave me solid directions)... definitely a location i will keep in my back pocket when i get low on funds or having someone visit on a little budget. or maybe just feel like a cheap high life & free popcorn! read more
