Who says you can't train an old dog, new tricks?! We took our 6 yr old reactive doodle to High Drive Dog Co last year. After years of obedience training (including board & train), we were walking less & less and he was becoming more and more reactive, so we were desperate for change. We heard about Carly from a friend and started classes right away. Within one class, Tonks was no longer barking at every person walking by our house in the morning, and by the end of Basic, we started walking him around the neighborhood. He definitely needed an ecollar so we took him through the Advanced program too. We're at least 6 months out of classes, and he doesn't really need the collar anymore. He listens to our "uh-uh," and doesn't trigger at all around other dogs, cats, etc. In fact, he's become quite interested in meeting other dogs on our walks (instead of totally fearful). We don't often have him off-leash, although he is trained for it (the ticks are SO crazy these days, our local field is currently a no-go). High Drive (Carly) definitely provided the training (for us!) that we all needed to live an active and balanced life with our dogs. Can't recommend her highly enough! read more

I've been taking my 11 month old shihtzu puppy, Winston, to High Drive since last November for Puppy Foundation and Advanced classes. High Drive came as a recommendation from a friend who had put her lab through training with Carly, and after seeing how well behaved he was, I had to enroll Winston! It definitely was a commitment as Longmont was a 45 minute drive for us, but I believe in putting as much work in as possible when he is a puppy so that there is less "layers of the onion to peel back" as an adult. Carly is blunt and direct, but she has so much love for dogs that you really cannot take it personally. I actually prefer this method- I like to be told what i'm doing wrong instead of beating around the bush (i'm no mind reader lol). Just do what she says, and practice at home! You really cannot get away without practicing at home, as Carly will call you out. Plus, what's the point in taking classes if you don't reinforce what you learned in class, at home? That would be a waste of time/money. Winston started in the puppy foundation class as a low confident 12 week old puppy who didn't like to play with the other pups in class, and always hid by my feet and under chairs. He is now 11 months old, and is super confident, and LOVES to play with all dogs (maybe a little too much now lol). He knows sit, down, place, heel, switch, get out, emergency stop, etc. He will hold position until the release command is given, even when there are distractions around. We finished our last advanced class with Carly a few weeks ago but we are still practicing certain areas where he could improve (i.e. learning personal space with other dogs, reinforcing certain commands, etc) but I have no doubt that with what we learned from Carly, he is/will be a confident, stable and balanced dog! I do plan to take Winston to playgroups and boarding if needed in the future! I've seen some reviews that communication isn't great with High Drive. I do agree that communication is a hit or miss sometimes. I'm sure High Drive receives a ton of emails a day and it will take a awhile to get a response, but with a follow up, there will always be a response from my experience. read more

Carly is an amazing trainer... to be clear, Carly trains the humans and the dogs react to what the humans have learned. Okay, here is my story. My wife and I decided to get a new Labrador puppy. We found a beautiful little pup, Izzy, from a good line of hunters. As time went by it became apparent that Izzy was a VERY high-drive dog! Izzy had got an ear infection and I took her to the vet. She was just 6 months old and it took three of us to restrain her so that the vet to look into her ear and medicate her. When the ordeal was over the vet handed me a card and said "you need this trainer". It was Carly's card at High Drive Dogs. Coincidently later that week, a friend of mine that was a member of the local hunter-retriever club, stopped by the house. Izzy was wound up tighter than a rubber band. Getting her to calm down was next to impossible. When our visit was over, he handed me a card and said "you need this trainer." Again it was Carly's card. Izzy and I have completed the foundations class and as I take her on walks we often get compliments like "your dog is so well-behaved. Did you train her?" Ultimately my point is, Carly took what I thought was an impossible situation and turned it around. She is a fantastic trainer. Finally, there is a side to Carly that I think goes unnoticed and that is her love for dogs. She rescues unruly dogs that were uncontrollable by their owners and teaches them and finds them homes. I've heard her say, "you can cuddle your dog, but don't coddle your dog. It's people not taking the responsibility to train their dog that gets so many dogs put down." She is an amazing individual. What a transformation! I took my anxious biter who I had completely adapted my life around to high drive and was amazed. The initial board and train set my Australian shepherd up for success in a way I would never have gotten to on my own and certainly not with any of the many positive - only trainers I'd consulted before. I had taken Luna to several trainers that either said she was a lost cause or barely moved the needle on her behavior or her disposition. What was truly unexpected was how relaxed my dog became without meds. I had been so fearful as a coddling co-dependent dog owner not to hurt or cause harm that my protectiveness was woefully misplaced. Carly helped me see the kindness in structure and truly helping empower my dog. I've had more cuddles and love then ever before, all of my fears have vanished as it is beyond evident that momentary correction / meaningfulness is traded for lasting calm in my dog. This was the kindest thing I could have done for my pup and wish I had many years sooner. When that big dog came to his forever home December 17, 2019, we were under the impression that he was non-reactive to cats. That was good, because this home has two formerly feral kit kits that have wiggled their way into the heart of this #dogmom That assumption wasn't quite accurate. Our giant puppy flipped his skull over cats. Chasing, barking, lunging, completely losing his mind. Because of this, our cats spent a full year living entirely in the basement where they could hide and be safe. They no longer got to cuddle while the tv was on, or go hunt for presents, or charge their solar batteries in the sunshine. They were banished because a 130 pound monster could not keep his cool. On October 7, 2020, we started the 8 week Foundations class with High Drive and I immediately regretted waiting so long. The "basic" skills that Carly taught helped uncover Bodhi's potential to be a stable, balanced, confident dog. And the humans learned how to support that puppy on his journey. We recently started Advanced classes. Again, a little sad that we waiting so long because oh-holy-shit is this stuff cool. And watching Bodhi's progression in just the first hour is pretty badass. Party tricks are neat, but being able to trust my Great Dane in any situation is priceless. If you are struggling, I could not recommend High Drive strongly enough. If you aren't struggling but want faster, better results - pay attention. Stop what you're doing, go to the website, sign up for classes. They fill up fast. You don't have to tolerate a dog that isn't living their best life. MORE IMPORTANTLY your dog deserves a better life. Especially if that life or home is in jeopardy because of a behavior that can be addressed. Carly doesn't teach a skill called "ignore cats". Went to one session - the trainer was abusive towards the dogs (scared them so bad they urinated all over themselves). Scared the poor pup, who was already extremely nervous, by screaming and shaking a can of pennies inches from the dog's face. From what I saw, this place practices extreme negative reinforcement (what they call 'balanced training') -- abusing the dog into behaving. The website has no information on their outdated methods. I requested a pro-rated refund for the eight-week class, stating my reasoning for cancelling. Scare tactics are outdated and research has proven that these are not good for dogs. I was refused any refund. Their website did say no refunds, however I felt misled by what the class would be. But, I'd rather lose almost $300 than have my sensitive puppy be traumatized for life. Since then I have found a positive reinforcement trainer and my little guy is doing AMAZING. He is happy, confident and well-mannered. The trainer told me my puppy was "terrible" and said any other methods won't work-- clearly false. I highly recommend checking out the other negative yelp/Facebook/google reviews as well. read more

Completely Different Dog!! My 2 year old Female Heeler came to Carly and staff extremely reactive with a very high drive. A friend highly recommended Carly and High Drive so I reluctantly enrolled her in the Board and train December 2023. In 3 short months including Daycare and beginning of the foundations classes I now have a Stable Balanced and Confident Amazing companion and I am starting to understand how dogs brains work and why Carlys training style is soo effective. Honestly before High Drive I was at my wits end with my pup!! Carly is straight forward and her approach has worked wonders for my Girl. We tried High Drive for our 2 dogs (classes, boarding, and daycare) and have not had the best experience. We either get abrasive interactions or have been ghosted via email (we sent 4 emails in 1 month) finally were told they were too busy to respond as they received hundred of emails a day. We then asked for a refund, no response. We are pretty flexible but communication is an issue. read more

I walked away from this half-way through my ($600.00) training. The trainer was abusive not only to my terrified dog, but also to me. She told me that I "was ruining, no, had ruined "my dog. When I asked for information on that statement, she got angry. So did I and unfortunately did not collect the remaining $300.00 that I had paid. I was too disgusted with them to pursue it. RUN RUN RUN! We took our pup to High Drive about a year ago, and we are STILL dealing with the damage she caused to our dog. She is insulting and narcissistic. In the first class, when we would ask for clarification on how to do a specific task, she said well, you're doing it wrong, so that's why it does not work, not actually teaching how to do it better or helping him. She uses aggressive tactics to "break" your dog of fears by literally dragging your dog through their fears, using prong collars and spray bottles. After the first class, I was very uneasy but decided to keep going to give it a try. As we kept attending classes, I could see my dog starting to get scared of us and the training tactics she was teaching us. I would leave crying on multiple occasions because of the things she was having us do to our pup. The only thing that was happening with our training was the dog getting scared of us and not listening. On top of that, she forces you to bring them to HER daycare, yet is EXTREMELY rude if you have any questions about things that happen there. There are particular directions for drop-off, and if you don't follow them to a tee, she yells and degrades you as a human. Although the first day I dropped my dog off, I was 5 mins early, Carly showed up about 10mins late and said, so you know, I'm never here on time. The next time I was 5 mins late for drop-off, and she SCREAMED at me for wasting her time. These are just a few specific interactions we had with Carly from an awful handful of exchanges. I have never felt so degraded as a human. My dog is now suffering from SEVERE separation anxiety, and I blame Carly and High Drive Dog Company for these issues. High Drive is the BEST! We have a very sweet but very shy/low confidence dog who knows all her basic commands but always struggled with not feeling very sure of herself with anyone other than people she knew really well. We reached out to High Drive and they suggested we take their 6 week Basic Obedience class, so we immediately enrolled. It has been a game changer! It is tough...don't get me wrong. This is as much about training you as it is learning how to train your dog, and don't expect training to be done FOR you. But we put in the work and our girl is gaining confidence every day (and so are we!). As an added bonus, once you're a student with Carly, you are able to participate in daycare and play groups which have totally changed our dog! Going just once weekly to daycare, we have seen our dog go from a nervous, human-focused dog at the park to being a social butterfly. It's AMAZING. If you've got a dog, you NEED to consult with Carly - she is an awesome dog trainer! (And just a super fun human being and friend, too.) We've been training with her since our dogs were puppies - Puppy class, beginning dog obedience, intermediate obedience, advanced training, and CGC certification. We have a "pack" of three super high-drive dogs, including a couple of young male pitbulls, and as you can imagine it's become a bit of a challenge handling three big, strong dogs at once, even with all the handling skills she has already taught us. They're usually super well-behaved - people are impressed when they see us walking a pack of three calm, well trained big dogs - but as their handler I've always had a lot anxiety and stress about encountering another dog, because my three together can potentially be too much to handle if things "go south". It had gotten to the point that my wife could not walk all three dogs by herself because they had knocked her down and drug her along the ground, and hurt her. She was so worried about having a problem that she wasn't able to enjoy something as simple as a walk around the block with the dogs. Not that they're mean or aggressive, they're just strong and stubborn! Carly helped us understand what had been happening, that "handling" is not the same as "training" and then helped us teach the dogs self-control when other dogs are nearby, which frankly has let us restore some balance in our home and daily walks. We called Carly when, after a move, our dog became so anxious when we left the house that he managed to break out of his crate, break the window pane in our living room, chew through the screen, and escape to the yard. Twice. When we called her, we couldn't leave our dog alone and were desperate to get some help. After two private sessions with Carly, and two weeks into our Basic Obedience class, our pup is laying quietly in his crate while we walk down the street to get a cup of coffee. We're amazed and very excited to see where he will go from here! Carly emphasized that his behavior could be a symptom of a foundation problem, and going to the training classes and doing our homework has improved his behavior so much already, and we're seeing other issues clearing up too. Based off of things we had heard, we were very nervous about bringing the e-collar into our lives, but with Carly's guidance, we have learned that it is an excellent tool that can be used humanely to give your dog (and you) a better quality of life, and rather than it being harmful, it has helped our dog stay out of harms way. I do not usually write reviews but our experience at High Drive Dog Academy was so great that I had to write something to hopefully convince other people to call Carly. Our dog, Maggie, was quite low confidence when we started, to the point that we could not leave her at home during the day. We were driving her to doggie day care daily and could not leave the apartment at night. She would make guttural, screeching noises that disturbed the neighbors and so had really limited our ability to go out with friends. We tried everything: tiring her out to exhaustion, CBD oil, calming hormones, almost every anti-anxiety medication available to dogs at maximum dosage, anti-bark collars, other trainers, and nothing worked. We were told to contact High Drive as a recommendation from our vet and we decided that High Drive would be our last attempt, then we would just accept our dog's problems and work around them. Maggie's problems were so bad that Carly now uses Maggie as a "before" example to the class. Essentially we were at our wit's end and were ready to quit. For your reference: Maggie's problems looked a lot like separation anxiety. If we put shoes on, she would start pacing. If we left, she would constantly pace, bark, howl, pant, and screech. While at home, she would follow us around our 1 room apartment constantly being under foot. Maggie always had an eye on us and we could tell she was always terrified that we would leave. We called Carly and her confidence at first was quite surprising and honestly, my wife and I didn't think she would be able to solve our dog's problems because so many other methods had failed. Carly came to our place and wasn't put off at our dog's problems. Instead she laid out what she thought the problems were, how they were continually reinforced, and how she suggested to fix them. Because of the severities of Maggie's problems, Carly suggested we do a month of board and train at High Drive since the amount of training and specific techniques would be tough for us to complete on our time. We got the feeling that this was Carly's honest recommendation and not at all that she was trying to upsell us. The cost of board and train is high but consider that if you are considering that as an option, you must have something pretty severe you are trying to fix. Think about what that costs in terms of your time, attention, and stress and then weigh that against the board and train cost. For us it was a pretty straightforward decision and we are so incredibly happy we did. We didn't see Maggie for 1 month straight while Carly worked with her. Once we got her back, she still had problems but Carly was absolutely determined to fix her. We worked out a schedule for how to deal with the dog's problems and continued that for a few weeks until we could leave her at home all day. This was amazing for us and truly has been worth every single penny, I just wish we would have found Carly before all the other treatments since it would have saved so much extra time, money, and stress. Maggie is no longer on any meds and is left alone 5 days a week for normal business hours. She can stay at home while we go see a movie or go out to dinner on the weekends and we are not afraid of her making tons of noise. She gets plenty of time with us but also is given her space so she does not become too attached. Carly has very seriously improved our relationship with our dog and each other. Maggie was such a stress poit before the time at High Drive that she was always in our heads; that stress has now almost entirely evaporated. Notes for potential clients: Leave everything you thought you knew about dog training at the door. Trust what Carly says and everything will be just fine. Yes, she does use both negative and positive reinforcement but just water bottles, noise makers, and sometimes e-collars (which are not bad when you feel them before you ever put them on your dog). We have gone with what Carly says for training entirely and without question. Maggie still has her old personality but with a very obvious and helpful new training structure now. We trust Maggie to do what we say and this has made her far calmer and less anxious and improved my relationship with her. Unfortunately, we are leaving the Front Range but if we were staying local, we would be signing up for every class Carly offers. Carly solved problems that other trainers simply couldn't in our 7 year old dog. Carly has an absolutely tenacious mentality whereby she will not stop until a behavior problem is solved and if you follow her lead, you will also be successful. I cannot recommend Carly and her team strongly enough to people with any number or severity of dog behavioral issues. Go in there with an open mind, listen to what she is telling you, follow-through with your homework every time, and things will work out. My dog spent two years in a shelter prior to adoption and had dog aggression that prevented me from taking him anywhere or near other dogs. We took the beginners class and his dog aggression improved by ~80%. Now we attend the play group session once week and are working on the other ~20%. We recently enrolled and completed the beginner series of classes, after thorough discussion with Carley and staff about initial hesitation this was too basic of course for what we were looking for. We had done a considerable amount of training already (have prior dog training experience), and our dog already had basics of recall, sit, stay, down, as well as heel on walks etc. However he is a "high drive" dog and so distractions were an issue, as well as some specific behavior concerns we were at a loss for understanding how to fix. We were told "no way" when wanted to get into intermediate course, and "all dogs go to beginner series" regardless of what website states. We lost not only 6 weeks of Wait time for series classes to start, but sat through another 7 weeks while we painstakingly had to go step by step through her series, even though our dog proficiently did as asked in class each week (demonstrating he was already trained for those basics). Whenever we asked for help outside of class material, we were almost always told wait until next class, or she brushed us off as out of time. As we approached over half class completion and felt very concerned we had not addressed our initial training issues, so scheduled a phone call to discuss. Carley was less than helpful, suggested spending money on many other services, yet still refused to help us with what we'd been promised class would cover. To add to frustration, each class we attended she entirely ignored our dog or concerns we had, and instead focused on everyone's else's dogs as they needed more help as had less training basics. In the last meeting we tried again to discuss how we had same concerns and were very frustrated now as our goals for training had not been met (and now had lost more 3 mo. Of valuable training time with adolescent dog). Her response was to spend $200 private learning how use an e-collar, and another $250-300 purchasing an electronic collar. When my daughter who is college age, intelligent, polite, and non-confrontational inquired gently asking about this approach ad she was trying learn about other things we could or should try to ensure we'd tried other approaches first before proceeding to an e-collar, Carley got angry with her and bluntly stated something to effect of "well you obviously don't want to listen to my advice or learn", when she only was trying learn something about why Carley decided suddenly to go to e-collar approach. My daughter left that class in tears as was so humiliated and rudely treated. BTW, we did not oppose use of e-collar, and have purchased one, but certainly will not be learning from her how to proceed and are utilizing other resources who ARE interested in educating and teaching. I strongly advise proceeding with caution, while Carley understands dogs very well as has some very good training approaches, she is not interested in individual needs and is more interested in mass sales of her services. We were very misled, yet we communicated repeatedly and clearly about what we wanted to get from course. If she couldn't provide us with what we wanted, she should have said so. After 6-7 weeks in class, I learned nothing to add to our training skill set. Very disappointing! read more

Inflexible. One size fits all. Not receptive to any past work done with the dog that has been successful. Puts equipment on all the dogs as they enter and then charges owners for it on top of a relatively expensive class cost. I walked out. I have already put a lot of work into my dog, made a lot of progress, and was hoping to learn more and go further with Carly but she sells a rigid system, and I have been there and done that and moved on already. read more

I couldn't be happier with the results after a short time with High Drive Dog, and can't wait to realize my dog's potential with continued training. I was referred to them by a friend when my dog started reacting to strangers and other dogs. I thought her behavior was a result of being attacked by another dog, but HDD taught me that my own actions after the attack enforced her bad behavior, and she had developed leash reactivity. After some assessment and beginning obedience, Mini is doing much better around strangers and other dogs, and is doing well on a leash. I have been bringing my dogs to Carly for training for about 2 years now. I have so many good things to say about the training Carly & Sara provide. They are both extremely knowledgeable, patient, honest, clear and consistent. I can truly say that if it wasn't for Carly my dog's quality of life wouldn't be near as fantastic as it is now. I didn't know how to properly deal with some of his more difficult issues, and she worked with me tirelessly and didn't give up until I got it. I called to sign up for their intermediate dog training. They would not let me enroll our dog since we did not take the basic class with them. I have taken basic, intermediate, & Good Canine Citizen classes over the years with many different trainers. So, besides already knowing the basics & having already taken a basic class with our dog now, they still did not want to entertain the thought that our dog may have enough training to at least be in their intermediate class. They didn't suggest even testing our dog to see how advanced in training he is. They preferred to lose business rather than give solutions. They told me that a lot of people think that their dog is well trained but usually isn't well trained enough for their classes. I felt like we weren't good enough for their "snobbish" business. Their classes are higher priced than other training classes in our area, so why would I want to pay more or again for a class & training that we have already completed. When asked about what they train in each class, they stated it was difficult to explain. They also seemed to have a "take it or leave it" attitude. I don't even know if their training is any good because they would not let us try them out. read more

High Drive Dog training is my savior!! I have a 3 year old mini aussie who is extremely stubborn and loves attention. Carly taught me how to be a handler and how to teach my dog how to listen on comand. Just after basic dog training (6 weeks) I noticed huge improvements... no more pulling on walks, whining is minimal. No only did I love going to class but so did my dog he loved learning and knowing that he was working for something. Carly is an amazing teacher and is extremely passionate with owners and the animals! I loved her approach with pressure and release.. this helped get over those humps of "why isnt my dog getting this"! We are on to intermidiate training! I recommend this for all owners and dogs no matter what level your dog training is at you will be sure to learn a ton! read more

Have to agree with Megan F. I was greeted at the door of our 1st class with a very aggressive Carly who immediately got in my face about everything I was doing wrong-coming thru the door. I can't take advise for my dog from someone that doesn't even know how to conduct themselves. She knew I was upset and was very condescending the entire class. This is not my first rodeo either! I decided for the sake of my blood pressure we forfeited the rest of the classes but I did write a detailed letter explaining my concerns and issues with her attitude. Never got a response. Anyone can deal with the easy dogs, but before you claim you can handle the ones outside the box you better be able to back it up. High Drive Dog cannot!! read more

Having a hard time with the overwhelmingly positive reviews online... Carly isn't bad, and I think her methods will work fairly well with the majority of dogs. She's not a particularly friendly or approachable person though, and saw every question as an opportunity to sell another product or class. I completed the basic puppy class with my 6 month old, visually impaired German Shepherd recently. He is blind in one eye, and his vision is questionable in the other. He's a rescue, and needless to say, had a rough start in life. He's a sweet and sensitive little guy, and despite Carly knowing of his disabilities, her training is very militant in nature, and she insisted on manhandling him which made both he and I uncomfortable, and did not help in training him at all. I don't know if she hasn't had experience dealing with dogs with special needs, but on several occasions when she didn't like his behavior she would essentially dismiss us and say "He needs a lot of work...." Which isn't helpful or constructive, and obviously I paid for classes, so that's we were there! He's not a dog that anyone else would say that about either, because if anything, he's a bit cautious and tentative, not some out of control monster. I'd recommend meeting Carly in person and attending a class dogless (one of the later in a series) prior to enrolling, to decide on your own whether Carly is the trainer for you or your dog. SOOO glad I found High Drive Dog Company. I drive all the way from Windsor for training at their facility. My dog apparently had a rough life before me. She's scared of everyone and everything new. After having her for three months and going to another dog training facility for a six week course, I saw little improvement in her outside the house. After only 4 classes at High Drive, she has already shown great improvement and is gaining not only courage, but confidence. I really value the help they've given me in learning how to work through her issues. They are always there to answer any questions and they do a great job. They really know how to work with all dogs. I found at the other training facility, they weren't prepared to work with an overly fearful dog and just suggested treats, treats, treats, but treats do not work with a dog that is too scared to take them. Carly and her crew are great with all sorts of dog personalities and offer alternate training methods that match each dogs personality. After the basics class, I will continue on with the more advanced levels since my dog and I are benefiting so much from their training. read more

Huge kudos and personal thanks to Carly owner of High Drive Dog Company. She is an amazing and disciplined instructor who really understands learning theory as it applies to dogs. As she is teaching, she's able to effectively multi-task and give you and your dog personal input for real time correction as needed and still carry on with class teachings. She often highlights specific examples in the classroom dogs to bring home the important points she's trying to teach. Carly taught us many learning tools to get our 'drivey' rescue dog listening and following expectations after the first several basic obedience classes. These lessons have allowed us to enjoy our dog so much more as we're now on the same page with our dog on expected behaviors.
