At first glance this is an older campground that has seen its years, but it's actually quite nice! The sites are a good size, very level and beautiful views of the fields to the west. The washrooms are very spacious, code locked for security reasons and very clean. A great perk is the restaurant just outside with delicious Mexican cuisine. Walking distance to a margarita is very civilized! All in all, I would absolutely recommend this campground. read more

We stayed here for 4 days and found a couple of great things to see in Oakley. There is the Monument Rocks that is located on private farmland that is open to the public during daylight hours. There isn't a fee - it is amazing to see these huge sandstone rocks in the middle of flat farmland. Then there is Little Jerusalem Badlands Park - it too sits in back of flat farmland that is accessible to the public - there is a parking lot that is maintained by the county but it is only $5 to park and there is a trail around the perimeter of the badlands. The RV park has all the amenities: pretty level pull through lots that are wide and spacious; clean bathrooms with showers; a pool; laundry room and WiFi( which is okay but not the best). The owners were nice and the wife asked my opinion about the park. Apparently they are new owners trying to make improvement on the property. It's a great place to get together with family and friends for the weekend & for anyone coming through this way and need a night or two. I would return if we come this way again. read more

We had reservations here for one night. Check in was quick and smooth. The gentleman at the desk explained the site map entry and exit path. He was very nice and offered assistance if needed. Our site had full hook up. I couldn't get the TV cable to work but that was ok...we don't watch much TV anyways. Our site, #110 was level and graveled. We didn't even unhook from the truck. I did notice mosquitoes and flies late evening but no more than anywhere else. We used repellent spray. The most annoying thing was burrs in the grasses. Our little dog couldn't be walked without getting them caught in her paws and she was yelping terribly. So be aware if you have a dog. It was very painful for her. This was my only reason to give four stars. Otherwise we had no problems at this campground. Even though it's right off the interstate, it was amazingly quiet! The wind picked up during the night and we had to get up and close our awning. We know better, but the evening was so calm that we sure didn't expect the winds that came during the night. read more

We got in really late but we were able to find our campsite because they left an envelope out for us with our information in it. That was appreciated. Overall, this place was the least friendly place we stayed. I'm not entirely sure if it's just the way that everything is worded in the leaflet you get, since honestly most of their rules are pretty reasonable- but the highlighting and underlining of each and every rule was a bit overkill and we didn't experience that anywhere else. It just comes across as.. Hostile..? We only stayed for one night, here were the good parts:. There was a book swap. We were trying to find a Little Library in each state so this gave us one less stop to make in Kansas as we could swap a book here instead of library hunting. The grounds themselves are gorgeous. Some negatives: There's no privacy here. They warn you in your paperwork about the cameras, and I expect cameras on landmarks like the bathrooms, office, playground etc. What I didn't expect was cameras on every single RV and trailer and in every decorative piece on their property? It felt pretty invasive. Not friendly at all. . The main thing is if they have that much vandalism it makes me feel a little hesitant to stay... But I had a tight schedule and couldn't find somewhere else. And lastly the bathrooms are not for use to anyone with one in their RV. Which would be OK, I guess... But our RV is winterized and we would have liked to have a shower. . It's just. Overall this place seemed pretty expensive for some of the things that you don't find out until you get there. And the people who live here are pretty hostile. Check out their replies to other campers. Those speak volumes. read more

Advertised laundry facilities, but only 1 of 4 washing machines was functional. I understand it is under new ownership, but it doesn't appear they are trying to make repairs/improvements. We would not have pre-reserved/paid for 2 nights knowing there was no pool. Temps were 90 first day, 100 second day. Ended up spending money on a motel for second night so we had a pool. read more

Nice to have a place for a quick overnight. Yes... it's a little on the old side of things, but it's an overnight pit stop not a vacation destination. What is it about campgrounds along I-70 in the western part of Kansas? During a brief overnight stay this past spring, my wife and I arrived at this property after the office was closed. We were back on the road early the next morning thus we had no interaction with the owners. And, though the campground is tired with little to no ground cover and old hookups (leaking water spigots and rusted electrical boxes limited to 30A), we slept through the night without issue. But the reason we won't stay here again is the disposition of the owners, as conveyed in the check-in paperwork from our reservation (made months earlier). Rule after rule, first expressed as "No This" and "No That" but then followed by "If you do X, we will do Y," much of which involves additional charges to your credit card they have on file. Reminiscent of certain teachers from elementary school! A few years earlier, we were a bit further east when deciding to stop at the KOA in WaKeeney, Kansas (without a reservation). We might have stayed in spite of its darkness and somewhat trashy appearance but after seeing the multiple large "No Trespassing" warnings and the detailed actions they would take against offenders, we decided to keep on moving. We continued eastbound to stay at the small but comfortable creekside city park in Ellis, Kansas, which we will use again and happily recommend to others as a stopover. I'm wondering if there are other properties in western Kansas that are as seemingly hostile toward campers as the two places we encountered. read more

First, the good part: easy to get to, right off the highway. And there's a restaurant on site that's perfectly acceptable. I reviewed the restaurant separately (on Yelp) from the campground. Avoid the pizza. ;-) It was level and not muddy. But the bad news: the owners have some weird policies, like keeping the bathrooms locked to anyone that has a "toilet in their RV." This is not a bargain-rate place at $45/night. Come on people, leave the damn bathrooms and showers unlocked. Even though I have a shower in the rig, it's nice to take a non-RV shower. The worst part though: mosquitoes and a lot of them. I'm not talking about one here and there; I was hooking the RV up, looked down at my legs, and had 7-10 on *each* leg. Swarms of them. This is public-health issue, really. For greater than $40/night, for pete's sake spend a few bucks with a pest control company. Thankfully, it was windy the next morning when we pulled out, and the winds kept the mosquitoes at bay. Overall, I'd skip this place in mosquito season for sure. And they could use a serious review of their policies. Would not stop again. read more

Made reservations to stay overnight while traveling across the country based on the rating on Good Sam. The one star definitely comes from the proximity to the highway and easy access to I-70. We were traveling with a group and had asked to be close by each other to make it easier when preparing dinner, etc.....but were denied due to the sizes of our campers. I would have understood this completely if the place was booked up.....but that just wasn't the case at all. We were placed in the front lot with broken picnic tables. The rest of the group was placed in a pine tree lined lot (actually a little more picturesque), but the sites had big divots in the middle of them making it difficult to level the camper and hook up sewers without parking in the middle of the driveway. read more

Not sure how to really rate this after our last stop. We've been stopping here for 20 years, but today was the most disappointing. Not only are there no picnic tables at each site, I guess they just got rid of them as they wore out but there's nowhere to put your trash unless you walk all the way up front. The rv's that appear to be full time residents are surrounded by giant weeds. There is no cable, and Wi-Fi doesn't really work. If you want to compete with koa and others, offer the amenities people count on. Very disappointed, we'd like to support small businesses but it appears they just keep cutting more corners. We love it, it's a perfect in-between stop to or from a lot of places. The restaurant is excellent. We usually order the more gourmet items on the menu, glad we tried them. It's definitely not what we expected in the middle of KS. My husband and I were shocked when we went the first time. We had stayed at the RV park several times before and never tried it. We make it a point to stop in and eat every time now. The grounds are very clean and we used the laundry facilities, very clean. The owners are super nice. I'm pretty shocked to hear negative reviews. We're on our way now and can't wait to eat. read more

If you cancel, even months in advance, they will agree to credit your account minus a cancellation fee but it will never happen. They will never process this credit. When I called repeatedly I was told they could see my cancellation and would process the credit. The last time I called, which was six weeks after we cancelled, the owner came up with various reasons why she would not give us our money back. I believe this campground is not doing well and the owner needs every cent she can get her hands on. DO NOT book this campground! The reason we cancelled was due to a family emergency back home. We were on the West coast and had to travel to the East coast in a hurry. We cancelled about 10 campgrounds that we had booked for the trip home and not one was as rude and non-sympathetic to our reason for cancelling. All other campgrounds returned our money. Traveling from Illinois to Moab on I 70 , we were in need of a campground for the night and I called High Plains Campground to check on availability ....... Jessie ( the owner) was so helpful and accommodating to our small group as we were going to be coming in after close. The registration envelopes were waiting on us and we pulled in and found our sites without any problems. She had told me to call her at The Pub ,that they also own on site ,if we needed anything. After we had hooked up she came by to check on us and told us to come over to the Pub if we were hungry or wanted a drink. We did and the food was delicious......this campground was simple, not to big , very accommodating , and handy to get off and on I70 with a gas station across the road.......we will definitely be back If we are ever in the area again and need a campsite...... read more

The owners were very friendly and helpful with all our needs, the bathrooms were spotless, and the showers had full on water pressure and HOT water! We also had one of the BEST pizzas ever at the pizza cafe in the RV office building - tons of smooth cheese, fresh veggies, (chopped onion, olives, green pepper) and delicious meats piled onto tender crust and a crisp bottom. We were traveling thru Kansas and stayed at High Planes Camping for a night due to high winds. The spots were so level that we didn't have to do anything to the camper. They have easy pull through spots. We didn't swim in the pool, but it looked nice and clean. The campground is in Kansas and looks like the planes of Kansas. Then we went to the restaurant on their property, Captain Jacks Pub. This his was a really delicious place! We had an 8 ounce filet mignon and a Maryland crab cake. We lived in Maryland for eight years and We have really missed genuine seafood. I would've never expected to find it in Oakley Kansas. They used old bay spice perfectly! The steak was done exactly as ordered. It was tender and flavorful. The owners are very nice and friendly. All and all we are glad to have found this place. We will definitely come again when driving thru Kansas. read more

We thought it was just a pass through spot for the night, over the phone she was rude but I thought it wouldn't matter. The moment I walked in to check in, the lady was incredibly snappy. She seemed aggravated that we had kids with us. When we rode around on bikes to stretch our legs for a stroll around the campground all of our tires went flat from thorns. We had a little outdoor movie playing quietly (because she said kids couldn't be at the pool or near the pool around 8:00 and she would be the "enforcer"). Our friends backed their RV in so we our awnings could face each other, nothing crazy. She pulled into our campsite at 8:30 and started screaming at us that it was unacceptable and that we would have it clean before tomorrow....we literally had our kids bikes next to our vehicles, lawn chairs that we were setting in out and that was it. There are several other campgrounds down the interstate that have kind people. Not coming back, been to several campgrounds over the years and this one was strangely rude. read more

Stopped here because this "in-the-middle-of-nowhere" campground was listed in the Good Sam directory. It is also listed as a non-smoking campground. I'm all for that. Traveling from Kansas City to Denver, we needed a place to rest. Although there was no snowfall yet, this was the winter season and the campground looked pretty bleak. We called ahead and were kindly informed of the late-night check-in procedures. The campground has easy access off the I-70 and has some nice long, wide pull-through spaces with full hookups. Even in the dark, it was pretty easy to get all settled. We arrived late and left early, so we didn't get a chance to try the restaurant next door nor did we see the hot tub, pick from the frozen garden, or explore the closed gift shop. We did peek inside and it looked nice. As we were departing, the owners arrived and spoke to them briefly, but at that point we had to move on. She was friendly - He, not so much. Whatever - maybe he was occupied with other things. They did have a gated dog run which we used briefly and that was nice. The bathrooms were brightly lit and HUGE! Lot's of room to spread out and take a nice shower, right? Well, there were some weird bugs on the shower floors - some dead, some alive. Probably a seasonal thing and it *was* freezing cold outside, so if I were a bug, I'd get out of the cold too! Aaaah ...soft water! Looks like there might be some fun family activities during the spring or summer months, so if we drive through here again in better days, there's a good chance we'll drop in and stay another night. Should be zero stars. We made the mistake of choosing this campground based on the pictures on their website. The website mentions that this place will "rejuvenate your soul". The pictures were obviously taken in much happier times. This place looks NOTHING like the website pictures. First of all, when we pulled into the place, we thought it had gone out of business. It looked deserted. The sign looks old and worn out. There is a really old, nasty looking trailer parked in front as you drive in, old run down cars parked out front and an out of business restaurant to greet you. Front office staff-not at all friendly. Upon pulling into our space, the hookups looked like they hadn't been touched in many years. The water hookup was rusty and leaking, the cable tv hookup was laying on the ground on a broken post. The cable box was smashed. The only green grass in the place was right where the water was leaking. Other than that, it was dead. I watched two other campers arriving and saw them get out of their rigs and look around like "this is it??", just like we did. On the lengthy list of "rules" that they provided to us states (among a lot of other "no this" and "no thats"), that if you have a bathroom in your rig you can not use the park restrooms. I have stayed at RV parks all across the U.S. and this is the first one that has had a rule that you can't use their restrooms if you have one. I checked and the restrooms were locked. I guess if you are trying to save a buck or save on cleaning, but it doesn't make for a welcoming stay. I went to do some laundry, which was also a huge mistake. No great surprise, but, only two out of four machines were operable (signs on the other two). I started two loads and came back later to find one of my loads was still full of water and hadn't drained. When my husband went into the office to tell them, the woman came bursting in accusing me of using too much soap (which I tried to tell her I used a soap pod), then she said well maybe the person before me had used too much soap. Then she told me that I hadn't shut the washer door all the way (I shut the door the same way as the other machine that worked fine). She rudely grabbed my wet laundry and stuffed it into another machine and started it again for me. She demonstrated (by slamming the doors a couple of times very forcefully), that you have to slam the door with all your might because people have been prying them open, so, they don't work properly (so why don't you fix them or replace them then??). She spoke to me as if I were a naughty 5 year old, which I did not at all appreciate. Bottom line-avoid this dump at all costs. It will NOT rejuvenate your soul. It is tired, ugly, run-down, dead, sad and dirty. read more

This campground is quiet and the manager is friendly enough, but it's so unkempt and dirty, like the owners don't care much about it. The pool was very dirty and there is literally a pile of rubble in the middle of the grounds. The sites are level and hookups work, but not much else is going for this place. read more

This is a great place to stay if you're road tripping or RVing. My boyfriend and I stayed here last night after calling ahead to check on availability. The woman was extremely nice and helpful, both on the phone and when we met her in person. We were new to camping at campgrounds and she made everything very clear for us. Very clean and spacious bathrooms, activities and food and coupons, etc. For an inexpensive and freeway campground, it's the best we could find in Kansas and we were very happy we stopped there. NOTE***: we had a hard time finding this place with apple and google maps. The address is WRONG. this site is located on 83 just south of 70. It's right by prairie dog town, so use their address and you should find it. It's by a steak house. read more

Felt like a hippy for a day since they have the whole flower motif going on. The grounds a clean, cute. They have large showers, clean and locked restrooms. Code comes with your reservation. They do have cameras so don't try and just boon dock here. I reserved a head of time, ask about military or AAA discounts. All around was a good experience. read more

A GREAT campground that is completely smoke free! Nice wide sites and the absolutely BEST seafood restaurant on the property. Just off Interstate 70 it's worth the stop. Clean saltwater pool and hot tub is an added bonus. Glad we made the trip! read more

Very interesting RV camp on the high plains of Kansas just off Interstate 70 , developed in the 1960s. Although somewhat past its glory days and in need of some new capital, it still features many welcome amenities for the weary traveler: hassle-free check-in very close to the interstate with congenial hosts; pizza cooked to order at High Plains pizza with delivery to your site available; Captain Jack's Pub with full menu and six beers on tap; Colonial Steakhouse serves wonderful breakfast, lunch and dinner; there is a miniature golf course for the kids and DVD library available for borrowing without additional cost; the shower and laundry facilities are clean and working; the best part is the quiet natural beauty of the high plains with plenty of birds and other creatures. Hardworking staff: I don't see how they do it all! Highly recommended! read more

Definitely not a destination campground. Truly in the middle of Nowhere, KS. Appears fairly rundown. Needs improvement of the grounds, pool area, amongst other things. Staff was courteous. Sites are ok but no shade on any sites. Saving grace was Cap'n Jack's Pub located on the same grounds...excellent crabcake sandwich. Stayed here one night in a pull thru in our motorhome trailing a Jeep from Taos, NM on our way back home outside the Twin Cities. read more

No Good Sam discount if you arrive after hours. Their check-in paper warns of these "thorns" and watch that they don't get in the carpet. Sure enough, little cacti everywhere including my dogs feet. Will not be going back to this one. read more

My sister and I stopped here to camp for the night on the way out to California. We arrived 20 minutes before sunset and it was very easy to do a late check in. They left information on the office door for us and we had our tent set up just in time for nightfall. The amenities were very clean and we were very happy with our stay. We wish we could've had time for putt putt but unfortunately we arrived when it was too dark. If we ever make our way down Highway 70 again... We will be sure to stay again! :-) read more

The day started off great. We encountered a few rain showers but nothing big. The big snafu happened when we checked into the High Plains Campground in Oakley, KS. Long story short, we never turned off the engine. We were treated horribly. The staff was rude and mean. We are still baffled by the whole ordeal. Don't stay here or even entertain the idea of staying here. I read the reviews of rv parks and campgrounds to help make a decision on a place to stay. I should have listened to the bad reviews because they were right on about these people. Keep on going! Any place has to be better than this one. read more
