This former 20th Century luncheonette has become a cool vibe heavy load cheesesteak, wing, pierogi, hot dog emporium, complete with six stool counter and side wall music venue with Wednesday open microphone night. Pretty damned impressive for an otherwise fairly dated space. I went with two favorites; hot dog (Blitzkrieg Bop Dog) and Pierogi (Let's Polka), both of which were enjoyable and very tasty. The Blitz was full of sauerkraut and spicy mustard (ketchup added at the counter). Split and grilled, its only weakness was a broken roll that wasn't quite up to the challenge of holding everything together. Still, I liked it to the last bite. The potato cheddar dough pockets were deep fried and covered in sautéed sweet onion and crisp bacon pieces. Housemade creamy onion dip really added a special effect when it interacted with everything in my mouth. Quite the oral dance party. Delicious. The list of local bands playing at High Steaks was impressive. Definitely added a great sixties feel to the joint. This place is special. Five by five all the way. read more

Everyone in Philly swears by their cheesesteaks and with so many spots claiming to serve the best, expectations were high walking into High Steaks on Butler Ave in Fort Washington. Unfortunately, the experience didn't live up to the reputation. We ordered Philly cheesesteaks, and while I was ready to taste something iconic, what I got was a black pepper overload. The seasoning completely overpowered the meat, which was disappointing. Even worse, the bread-to-meat ratio was way off. My roll was soggy, and no amount of mayonnaise or ketchup could save it. We also ordered onion rings and chicken tenders for our toddler. The onion rings were fried to the point of being rock hard. Not crispy, just tough. The chicken tenders were dry and flavorless. Our toddler ate some and said they were "good," but even she didn't want the leftovers the next day and neither did we. Hubby said to be fair, the staff was sweet and very accommodating, which we appreciated. However great service can't cover up subpar food. Sadly, High Steaks missed the mark for us, and in a city known for doing cheesesteaks right, that's a big letdown. read more

On a recommendation, I went here and ordered a cheeseteak with fried onions and an order of onion rings. Chose the seeded roll. And the result, a fantastic lunch!!! While the server was very nice and helped make this a great experience, the quality of the steak and the perfect cook of it, along with the onions, and a nice helping of cooper sharp cheese, and perfectly crisp onion rings sealed the deal. Food: Cheesesteak- customizable and it was delicious! American cheese with fried onions and seedless roll with lettuce tomato mayo. Got hot peppers and pickles on the side. Curly fries and onion rings were also delicious! Service: Extremely sweet waitress who was awesome and checked in on us often. Made sure we always had what we needed. Food also did not take long at all. Ambiance: Cool music vibe with good music playing while we visited. 3 booths and a large round table along with some bar seating makes up for all the seating. Five Stars - Worth the Drive! My husband and I had dinner at High Stakes in Ambler tonight and it absolutely lived up to the hype. We used to be regulars at Chicken Time in Roslyn before it closed a few years back, so we were excited to finally try the new spot the family opened here--and we're so glad we did! We ordered a 12-inch cheesesteak on a sesame seed roll with mushrooms, plus a side of fries and mozzarella sticks. The cheesesteak was perfect--we split it and were both blown away. The Cooper Sharp cheese melted beautifully, the mushrooms were fresh, and the roll was soft with the perfect crunch from the sesame seeds. These guys aren't messing around when it comes to quality. Our mozzarella sticks came out cold in the middle at first, but our waitress Missy handled it like a total pro. She was friendly, quick, and sincerely apologetic--even though it clearly wasn't her fault. Great service makes all the difference, and she went above and beyond. Came in for a cheesesteak and forgot this place also offers pierogies, changed it up and went for their most eccentric version of a pierogi dish which consists of five lightly fried pierogies with white cheddar cheese garnished on top accompanied with charred hot dog coins. The dish is called Electric Mayhem and the pierogies themselves were delicious. Charred hotdog "coins" I wasn't a huge fan of but it's nice that the dish came with a protein enhancer in the form of chopped up hotdog. I also noticed they have a map of the USA and ask people who travel from far away to pin their location on the board. It's pretty amazing how far some of the people have come from, I believe they may at this time had someone from every state of the USA that has tried food from this location. I really enjoyed their cheesesteak (which is very customizable)! The one pictured is the beef steak with cooper sharp cheese, fried onions, and mushrooms on a 12" seedless. We set off to meet my Brother and his gf in Philadelphia, and top of our agenda was a good cheesesteak. We all ordered 12" Cheesesteak hoagies, so a cheesesteak ( made with Cooper Sharp American, the best of the best) with lettuce, tomato, raw onion and mayo on their seeded roll. You have a choice and can get no seeds if that's your wish. We also ordered a large order of onion rings with the amazing dipping sauce just because.... The cheesesteaks were amazing- lots of meat, cheese melted through, piled on the most delish roll ( a very important factor) with just the right amount of LTO and mayo. Absolutely amazing- hot, fresh, tasty. I cannot think of one thing I would have changed. The onion rings were just as good, homemade, big, perfectly cooked, amazing. Beware the large order is LARGE even for 4 people. Several of us took half of our steaks home, they were too large to eat in one sitting. I just finished mine, 6 hours later, and it tasted even better if that's possible. Everything sort of mushed together, soooo good. This spot has a very cool vibe, it's a byo but they have Hanks old school soda, the Vanilla Cream was amazing, and they have an open mike at night, so there are lots of instruments around and a tiny stage. Meat is very flavorful and not bland. Prices are good. This is one of our favor places for cheesesteaks. Seeded or non-seeded? etc. etc. Although I usually get a regular ol cheesesteak w fried onions, I ordered the French Quarter as the super friendly staff said it was their most popular. This garlic butter brushed bread cheesesteak with mushrooms and fried onions was so flavorful and juicy it didn't need the gravy served on the side of it and I used it on a few bites just to taste it. Three kinds of fries offered: traditional, curly or sweet potato. I got traditional w/ cheese whiz. I was asked if I wanted the cheese on top or the side - I said on top. The fries were great but the whiz was not whiz but foodservice cheese sauce. I love fries with whiz. The cheaper substitute was a bit of a letdown but good enough. I chose an RC Cola, not finding any Coke Zero in the vast and varied soda case. A bargain lunch at $18 for everything I got. I will return to High Steaks again enthusiastically. read more

I ordered a 12" steak with grilled onions, provolone, lettuce and tomato, and asked if they'd wrap it in foil, as I was taking it home to WV. My boyfriend added mayo at home. I added ketchup to a few bites for me. It was THE BEST cheesesteak! Great flavor, plentiful meat and add-ins, and it traveled really well. The staff were very friendly. I ordered a 12" cheesesteak wth fried onions and wiz, and it was excellent. The roll was piled high with steak to the point of overflowing, and the cheese to meat ratio was just right. The roll was fresh, and overall, this steak was certainly up there with the best I've had. There's always room for improvement though, but keep in mind that when I say "improvement", it's purely subjective, as everyone's likes and dislikes are different. So, what could be better? The roll. As I said, it was fresh, and overall just fine, but a slightly crisper bottom would make it perfect, especially since there's so much steak and goodness on it. For reference, to those from the Bucks/Mont area, years ago (I don't know how they are now), the Steak & Hoagie factory used rolls that appeared to have been fresh baked, and the bottom of the roll had a sort of lattice of lines on it. It would stand up to any sandwich, and provide just the slightest bit of crispness to the experience. At any rate, that was then, this is now, and High Steaks does indeed make a heck of a good steak. Places like these are the reason I'm proud to have grown up in this area. Came in here after picking up a brew from across the street and ordered the French Quarter cheesesteak. You can enjoy a fair amount of customization here, from whether you want seeds on your bread, to the regular cheesesteak fixins. The French Quarter comes with a gravier take on au jus. I can confidently say this is the best cheesesteak I've had in recent memory. The bread was the perfect texture and the steak was terrific. High Steaks is the newest tenant in 242 building that has been a turn style for restaurants since is was the Ambler Grill. The interior layout remains the same with new decor but there is now a stage for live music. You can pick your seat and place your order at the kitchen. They have traditional steaks along with several of there specialities like the Studio 54 and Santana. I went with a traditional cheesesteak hoagie on a 12" seeded roll. They have both regular and seeded rolls which is always a good sign. The lettuce was shredded and the onions and tomatoes were diced which is unique. All of the produce was fresh and had vibrant color. While the roll was good I would probably ask to have it scooped next time because it was a bit much. Overall the sandwich was solid and the employees were very friendly. While it wont make my top 10 its a good addition to Ambler and I'll be back. read more
