Just my two cents…read more.... I had a very close family member stay at Balboa for 90 days earlier this year. Did she get 90 days sober yes and some good counseling yes, although the staff nor their website is entirely truthful. That alone is not OK with me, don't B.S. people. When you first call in you talk to intake counselor/sales person was very nice, although she leads you to believe she has a lot more interaction with the girls than she really does. I was under the impression she saw them every week, not so in my family member's case. Then there are the "counselors' - aka recovering addicts themselves. That alone is not a bad thing but they really need more time sober and serious training. The case manager my relative had was a joke, total complete control freak that treated the family as the enemy. They seem to forget this is very stressful for the family as well. They also tell you that there will be pilates, trips to the museum, and other activities to help them have fun in a normal life setting. What they don't tell you is that the reality is you fork over additional funds for their activities which don't usually end up happening instead they get a crappy bike cruiser. Not quite what they show on their website. I don't have a problem with this not being summer camp they are there to get sober not have "fun" my problem is that they should just be honest and not make it out to be something it is not. Expect your friend or family member to be hounded constantly about how they need to stay there and do sober living in that area. We all didn't ship our family members off for good, we sent them to get better. I don't know what there agenda is here but again some honesty upfront would have been appreciated. We were in a major time crunch and didn't have long to choose a facility, although I really would have liked some honest reviews ahead of time to know exactly what the deal was. If your relative is older than 25 you may consider choosing another program just for that reason alone, the older gals end up being the baby sitters for the young pups. Please do your homework before signing up your family member. Ask EVERY question you can imagine and get everything in writing.

One of the things that amazed me the most, in addition to all of the group therapy, individual therapy, AA meetings, is that they also do a lot of fun things, showing the clients how to have fun completely sober!!! Another part of the program that was extremely beneficial was the Family workshop, consisting of 3 very informative and intense days!! I highly recommend Balboa Horizons inpatient program to anyone in need!! Just an update: my loved one has over 1 yr clean and sober now and we owe a big part of it to Balboa, eternally grateful to them!!!!!

That's because this place has taken a turn for the worse over the last couple years when Rodney (The one who made what it used to be which was amazing) passed away. A lot has changed with new ownership and 449 is completely different than what it used to be. I literally hadn't even started the 449 IOP program yet before having a negative experience which was when I arrived at their house and met the house manager. She came into the garage wearing a T-shirt (nothing else) with no teeth in (she wears dentures) and proceeded to tell me that I had "too much shit" and that I would need to get a storage unit before even saying hi or welcoming me. She told me this while I was standing in the garage that stored everyone else's shit (with almost every pile being equivalent or more of what I had) so I couldn't quite wrap my mind around why I was being told that I would have to pay for a storage unit. The 449 program itself is repetitive and the groups suck and I can honestly say that I didn't learn or gain anything from the months that I spent in the this program! An example of this is that every single week for the first month I was there, I was required to attend the new client group held weekly which is the exact same shit every week! They don't provide you with lunch and's it just was overall a complete let down and waste of time. One last thing (there's plenty more to complain about but this is the last thing I'm choosing to focus on). They do a beach day every week (or every other week...I can't recall) but that involves being required to stay at the beach for the ENTIRE TIME (six long and painful hours) with no shade and absolutely nothing to do. I can understand being required to stay if there were activities planned or groups being held but there was none of that! So it's basically you being forced to stay at the beach for six hours with nothing to do, no shade and they don't even bother to provide you with food. The thing that I had a huge issue with was that I have a history of skin cancer and cannot be in the sun for that long (even with sunblock, it's not safe for me to expose my skin to that). They wouldn't even allow me to get an excuse from my dermatologist and told me that I would still be required to attend and didn't seem to even care that being forced to stay at the beach for six hours on a weekly basis was extremely dangerous for someone with my skin type & history of skin cancer! If you're looking for a solid IOP program, 449 is not it!

I definitely pushed back when the staff tried to help me but they didn't give up on me. They were the first people to tell me the truth, they kept it real with me. The house I was in we were shoved in little rooms with multipul people on cots that had huge urine marks from previous clients. Ten women shared one bathroom as the bathroom downstairs was broken with poop in it! The bugs were the worst thing though. They were everywhere! I was bitten up so bad I needed medical attention after transferring out of there, plus they charge you 1200 a month to live there! We closed the windows but since they refused to turn the air on at night we had to open the windows which had torn up screens, hence the bug bites! On top of this they don't take clients to any meetings, grocery shopping, doctor's appointments, or even to the pharmacy to get their meds. They have one van for everyone so even though groups start at nine you are picked up at 7:30 and when the groups are over at 4:00, you dont get home until well after 5:00 and Mondays and Wednesday they take people to the gym so everyone has to go, then it's seven or eight oclock. The lunch they cater in for PHP clients is just awful. They spare every expense here and it is obvious they are only doing this for the money. I have stayed and worked at centers and have never experienced such calous attitudes and such horrible conditions. I am currently in the process of reporting them to the health department. All ua's are unsupervised so anyone could pass one with someone elses urine or synthetic urine. This place only cares about the money, they don't care about human beings! Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else if you are serious about your recovery!

The best case manager was Katrina by a landslide. In my opinion she should be supervising the rest of them keeping them accountable. I saw my case manager one time in the 3 weeks I was there, then found out I was leaving by Katrina the following day. It wasn't until I asked to switch case managers I finally saw him. I also had issues with my therapist as I saw him one time. I was very disappointed that they knew at least a day before I did of my exit date. They should have communicated this to their peers to relay the message to me so I had more preparation. I gave this place 4 stars all because Katrina, Shae and the entire nursing staff. The doctors here are great as well.

Serenity is, and was, a God send! Never have I lived in a home ran so effectively! There homes are truly outstanding! Clean and organized, yet relaxed and not far from the beach! I truly appreciate everything that was done for me here while I put the pieces of my broken life back together. It's interesting getting off a greyhound bus coming in from another state. You never really know what to expect. All I can say is that my expectations were blown away! I was in one of there homes in San Juan! Such an awesome neighborhood, especially considering I didn't have wheels to start off, the grocery stores, banks, recovery meetings, ect; are no more than a forty five seconds walk! Great location; and then when I got a car after a few months of working my butt off thebeach was less than ten minutes away! The house was spacious, and organized. The opposite of what I had come to expect a sober living to be. There were two live in house manager so staff was on property 24/7. Not like alot of these places that are like "as long as you pay your rent do what you want." The accountability structure and rules were exactly what I needed! And when I eventually broke a rules here and there I was sat down and spoken to like an adult. Never wad I criticised or looked down upon. I was given the room to grow and the guidance to grow upward. I could honestly go on for hours, but I guess I'll just leave it at that. Shout out to the owners for actually caring about the clients! Kelly jo does a great job of making sure the clients are clean. But when it comes to early recovery management style of your sober environment is everything so I would highly advise staying away from serenity. I'm not just speaking off of one bad experience, each girl I lived with had some sort of issue with the way she ran the house. There are petty complaints that anyone can have and that's not what I'm talking about. In the program they teach us to keep personal inventory. Kj makes sure to do that for you, aside from her other job she is always home, with nothing better to do than to micromanage the house, which is not only exhausting on her side but exhausting from a clients perspective as well. Waking up and making your bed is one thing but walking on egg shells constantly is another. It's mentally draining being at the serenity house due to always having the manager nit pick your every wrong move. As someone who was going to IOP From 9AM- noon then working full time from 1-9pm every night, I was barely home and doing something to attempt to better my life. Occasionally would be in a rush from IOP to work and for example would leave a cup on the counter, normally a house manager might cut someone with such a busy schedule a break. Not this house you'll get a write up for every little thing you leave out, and the write ups add to a behavioral contract, where you're even more micro managed. A strict behavioral contract where on top of my busy work and IOP schedule I was to attend 5 outside meetings, without means of transportation, or the time to do so sense the behavioral contract made my curfew 9pm. An impossible contract leading to discharge. It doesn't matter if you complain to the owner of serenity either because this house manager is dating him. She takes her authorities position to the next level and an environment that should be more peaceful became a dictatorship.
