What a beautiful wedding weekend! Thank you for letting us host our wedding here this summer! We were so lucky with the weather, keeping cool with just a short shower just before the ceremony. Everything was so green, the lake crystal clear for our wedding photos, and oh the food! The barn is a beautiful venue, with naturally colored beams and stained glass windows hanging over our party. We draped the banisters and beams with vines and placed battery pillar candles along the walls. Gail and Pecco had beautiful lighted stars already hanging from the top beams. It was magical all the way up to the fireworks at the end of the night, thanks again to another talented resident of Andover (just ask Pecco). The gardens and field were the perfect places to hold our rehearsal dinner in the tent and setup the ceremony by the apple trees. They have a natural wood/vine arbor installed which we decorated with fresh sun flowers and greenery from the Blossom Shop (also amazing!). I can actually share what it looked like, since Weddingwire used our setup for their virtual tour: https://www.weddingwire.com/biz/the-highland-lake-inn-andover/d615420ae226ad40.html Aside from the venue being pristine, Chef Brian MacKenzie (brianmackenziecatering.com) and AJ (Brothers House of Smoke) put on a culinary show for three days through the weekend. Everyone said this was the best wedding food ever, which was corrected to simply: the best food ever. We had smoked brisket and barbecue the first night, to gazpacho and filet the next, ending with a beautiful brunch spread. If you are looking for the perfect New Hampshire weekend getaway or intimate wedding weekend, we highly recommend this place!

The surrounding region also has 2-3 restaurants, and the cottage is right near a lake. The stay was quite comfortable. The cottage size is large and easily accommodate at least 3 people. There is a queen size bed on first floor and two twins on second floor. Everything is very clean when we first moved in. The only improvement is to improve the Internet service. The wireless reception is poor, and it is not an ideal place to stay if you require Internet for work/personal reasons.

This is a thoroughly updated establishment in which the details have been sweated out. In the two story great room, there is a healthy selection of good movies, lots of reading materials, games, and many good areas to hang out. Sondra, the proprietor, was a very gracious and generous host and a fabulous cook. It sounds like her menu changes, but for breakfast we had a strawberry, dark and white chocolate cobbler, an egg and ricotta omelet with fresh vegetables, home fries, cinnamon rolls, and bacon. The cobbler was even better than it sounds, the home fries were savory, the omelet was made with fresh eggs from the on-premises hens, and the bacon was crispy and not greasy. Finally, I would be remiss if I neglected to mention the setting. The view of the lake combined with the White Mountain range is so tranquil in the winter. The panoramic picture I posted of the sunset there doesn't do it justice. The way the entire building is situated on the lot and the way the decks open out onto the landscape is just wonderful and unique. One last note - if you like to watch TV, there is a huge menu of available cable channels, and if you use the Internet a lot, the Wifi is very high speed and works outdoors as well. However, your time would be wasted - your head should be pointed at the view and/or the food and not the screen!

The breakfast was fantastic, consisting of french toast that was to die for with asparagus and farm fresh eggs. The bed was equally as good, with a private bathroom and a nice little room warmer in the corner. The inn itself has the absolute best view of the surrounding lakes area that I have ever seen. The inside is beautifully decorated and has books and games galore. Sondra keeps it immaculate and makes you feel welcome, but the best part was her canine companion (Bernie?), a gorgeous male Burnese Mountain Dog who was friendly as could be. I highly recommend this for a weekend getaway and I'll definitely be back. Thanks Sondra!

Quite Charming inside and out…read more *Historic Building with rich Town history. *Featured on TAPS and Haunted History. We had no experience outside the ordinary. *It is an old building that has been rebuilt at 3 different times in history and to varying extent. *Stayed over 6/17-18/25 Room was a Queen room. Floors sloped, but expected given the age. The building is on one thermostat. We're from Florida and the room was uncomfortably warm. Window facing brick building next door so opening the window didn't allow for a breeze. There were 2 glasses on dresser but there was no ability to get water or ice. There is also no coffee in the Hotel. You would need to wait for restaurant to open at 11:00am. This made the stay uncomfortable and is the reason I can't give more 's. *Area for improvement would be to have limited refreshment access to Hotel guests and refresh the air quality as it was musty. *Onions restaurant has a nicely executed Menu. Which was 4/5's! Clams sweet and cooked perfectly but not all of the shells were open upon serving (which is a no-no). Haddock Salad had beautiful color and fresh julienned vegetables on hand and fish was crispy and not overcooked. *Tavern opposite of the Restaurant and has local Brew on Tap. 7 Taps and each really good! Beer lines tasted clean and temp was good. Beer tasted crisp and delicious. 5/5's. Parking very limited. Satellite lot approximately 2 blocks down on same side of street.

However, my overall experience was completely soured by the unbelievably unprofessional front desk service. Check-in was a disaster. The man at the front desk spent more time on the phone with (what sounded like) his wife, making odd and presumptive comments about me--while I was standing right there. It took over 30 minutes just to get my room key. Unfortunately, check-out was no better--another 30 minutes wasted on what should've been a simple process. To make matters worse, I was asked to write down my credit card number on a piece of paper because their system was down. Absolutely not. That is a huge security concern and incredibly inappropriate!! For the price I paid for a two-night stay, this experience was unacceptable. Hospitality 101: treat your guests with professionalism and respect. Sadly, this inn failed miserably on that front. I left feeling frustrated and disappointed, and I will not be returning. Do better.
