I didn't think it was possible to make this place 'worse'. But leave it to Capital Metro to find a…read morenew way of torturing public transit riders of Austin yet again. They took out the soda and water machines. Granted few people actually carried enough money on them openly for a ride AND a drink because of safety reasons. And getting one in the dark probably would not be advisable. But for the few who were willing to risk it, I'm sure this was a nice touch. My advice would be to carry your own drink around. Perhaps more useful was the benches/beds under the somewhat functional roof. Now there is inexplicably just only one of the 'brand new' shelters. Everybody else is apparently expected to stand or sit/lay on the ground irrespective of temperature and/or weather conditions until your transit connection arrives. I did a double take, amazed that human beings are treated like this. Even for them, this is a shocking new low. Yes it's really cut down on the prior rampant vagrancy. But they've also cut down on riders. You now have to really want and need to use the public transit system in order to endure this treatment. It wasn't at all pleasant for one trip and I can't imagine it encouraging casual riders to permanently move to public transit. Whoever who authorized this needs to be fired.

This transit center is a disaster, the worst in the city for sure. It is only easily accessible by…read morecar. Which is an obvious and complete failure because, you know, it is a BUS transfer center. Lets expand on this issue some more. 1.If you want to access the transit center from south of 183 say Anderson Lane as a pedestrian you have to contend with panhandlers, highway speed turning cars turning on red legally. (Having crossed several times there it feels like you are taking your life into your own hands, in a way that is hard to describe, but I recommend to anyone who may think this review is an exaggeration.) 2. Lets assume for a moment you live in the closest apartment complex, santa maria village, which touts the transit center as a feature, the transfer center isn't safely accessible no traffic controller, surrounding car oriented design. So for those keeping score... the only accessible side of this transit center is the West side of Lamar assuming you are already North of 183, unfortunately the nearest legal crosswalk is located at Lamar and Thurmond half a mile away from the station. So if you wanted to legally cross the street and lived at the nearest apartment complex, you would be walking a little over a mile, to get to the crosswalk and return to the transit center. (Not bad for someone in good shape and active, but not quick, not intuitive, and not possible for anyone with a mobility impairment, seniors, etc.) But, lets say for arguments sake and out of optimism that you do have a car, it would be reasonable to expect that you'd want it to be semi monitored. There are 0 cameras here as far as I can tell! It feels fairly sketchy, but that being said I have left my 14 year old car and it has been unscathed. Also, for arguments sake. Let's explore biking as an option, there is no secure place to lock up a bicycle if the racks on the bus are full. Additionally, the buses stack (long line of buses one behind the other), making it difficult to determine where the bus you nee is located. (pro tip- the routes are divided by lanes, but within a lane where a given route will be located will not be in the same spot in a given lane) No public restrooms. ***This is relatively central hub, that needs to exist with a coordinated facelift from Capital Metro, City of Austin, and TxDot. It is a shame that it was even allowed to be built without some of the infrastructure issues addressed in advance of the Transit Center and it is abysmal failure that the surrounding infrastructure is so bad 30 FREAKING YEARS later!!***

All I ask was how to get to University drive? The bus driver would not speak to me in English. So I asked one of the passengers if they could translate. Then the bus driver all angrily said I know English. Then she said in a ugly way to me can you lock your wheelchair. She told me Chimys which is a restaurant in downtown San Marcos. I was thinking there is no way I can take my Manuel wheelchair and wheel myself to Chimys to try to get to University drive. Then she starting saying loudly 3 times ah ching gow. It is not spelled correctly. I know and all Hispanics that know Spanish, that it is a curse word. So she is going off in 1 to 3 seconds because someone simply ask her question. Starts cussing on the bus. She said the curse word 3 times. I said you don't have to curse. It also states on 3 different websites. That it is a Spanish slang curse word. So when she saw me wheeling into the office. The bus driver ran into to talk to the supervisor before I could. The bus driver only said to me in English all angrily I know. When I asked for someone to translate. The women knows English but refuses to speak to me in English. She only wanted to speak Spanish, mind you were still in America where the language is English. That is what we are taught in schools here. When I go into the building to talk to the supervisor. That bus driver sees me and runs in there to talk to the supervisor first before I can. The supervisor a white woman with Grey or blond hair. I was trying to explain to her what happened. She would not listen. She was cutting me off when I tried to tell her. I told her in Spanish because I learned Spanish listening to my friends in school and I picked it up. Tex Mex. Then the Supervisor got all angry at a woman in a wheelchair, me, when I spoke to her in Spanish. Told me I was being rude. So I filed a complaint and a man whose Indian called me and said he knows French, Spanish and English and that is not a curse word. Every Texas Hispanic who knows Spanish has told me yes, that is a curse word. I told the supervisor quit being mean to ya'll's' customers. Was able to wheelchair my self back home in a manual wheelchair. It took 2 hours. The Indian supervisor was very happy to believe the lies of that bus driver. Continue to treat handicapped people as if there are no laws protecting them from being discriminated on here in the U.S.. I think the bus driver figured it out. The more ugly she is to the passengers. The less people she has to ride on her bus, and Carts still has to pay her, her check. This Indian man was like she is staying on your route. I said I don't have the privilege of walking. She went off in 3 seconds. I have no way to defend myself. For my safety I will never ride Carts buses again. The Indian supervisor was like okay. Carts in San Marcos should be happy to know a handicapped women who can't walk has to manually wheel herself around in a wheelchair all over San Marcos. There was a young couple waiting in the Greyhound area. They told me I was not being rude to that supervisor. I have talked to other people they have told me that particular bus driver is very rude. Other passengers that told me she is very blunt. Then why on God's green earth is she working around people. Especially those who are handicapped and disabled for life. The main man a Indian supervisor has obviously no understanding of laws in the U.S. protecting the disabled and handicapped. How much more does Carts in San Marcos want to continue to be mean to people in wheelchairs .

Howard (aka Stop #5540) https://www.capmetro.org/stopdetail/index.php?stop=5540) is a park & ride, so there are 301 spaces adjacent to the train stop which serves the following bus routes in addition to the 550 MetroRail Red Line: 50 Round Rock/Howard Station https://www.capmetro.org/schedmap/?svc=0&f1=50&s=0&d=N 243 Wells Branch https://www.capmetro.org/schedmap/?svc=0&f1=243&s=0&d=E 980 North MoPac Express https://www.capmetro.org/schedmap/?svc=4&f1=980&s=0&d=N (well, you have to walk/scoot/bike about 1/2 mile to New Life Church on southbound Mopac to reach this one) Everything you need to know about how to use CapMetro services is available in their full system map https://www.capmetro.org/uploadedFiles/New2016/Plan_Your_Trip/Destinations_Schedule_Book/system_map.pdf and Destinations book https://www.capmetro.org/uploadedFiles/New2016/Plan_Your_Trip/Destinations_Schedule_Book/Schedulebook_web.pdf . Trains arrive every 15-30 minutes during the daily service hours, which vary according to the season (mostly whether school is in session) and day of the week. Keep in mind that southbound and northbound trains share the same tracks, so there's a limit to how many more trains can be feasibly be added to the mix. Check the full Red Line schedule https://www.capmetro.org/current_schedules/pdf/550.pdf for details and follow CapMetro on social to keep up with last minute service alerts. It's still pretty pricey to ride the train, $7 for an unlimited day pass or $3.50 for a single trip (which must be used within 1 hour of purchase). All day MetroRail passes do not require transfer fees, so you can take as many trains as you need to reach your final destination (although I tend to walk, run, or use a kickscooter, myself; you can also try one of the many bike & e-scooter rental options downtown). If you're visiting and will be using the train for 4 or more days, your best option is the 7-day pass at $27.50. If you are a student, a senior citizen, or one of a few other special groups, you can get 1/2 priced passes, but you need to show proof of eligibility when tickets are validated or checked by fare enforcement. Don't try to cheat, or you'll get a $75 ticket! More about reduced fares here: https://www.capmetro.org/rfid/ Perhaps because it is so pricey, the degree of riff-raff & shenanigans one encounters on the train seems pretty low for public transport, but YMMV. Members of the homeless encampment just down the street at the Mopac overpass do sometimes make their way over to the station, but we've never encountered any trouble from fellow humans at this station or on the train over the years. Morning & evening commuter rides are pretty quiet and comfortable, although you may need to stand during the most popular morning southbound and evening northbound trips. Back at the launch in 2010, the last northbound MetroRail trip of the day was around 6:30p, a bummer if you had ideas of heading downtown for an evening of merriment with no need to drive or park. That's still true most of the week (it's still a commuter rail service & it still shares the tracks with freight trains overnight) but on Fridays & Saturdays, we now have extended service until after midnight, with the last train from the Convention Center departing northbound at 1:45am on Friday night and 2:30am on Saturday night. They also extend the service hours during special events like SXSW and ACL Fest, but beware that those trains get packed! Another big change since the beginning is that the station's ticket kiosks no longer take credit cards AND they do not give back change. Instead, you get a paper voucher that must be used toward additional CapMetro services within 15 days or the value disappears! For this reason alone, it's generally to your advantage to put the CapMetro app on your smartphone and make your ticket purchases & activations there. You also get timely service alerts on the app when there are unexpected delays or other emerging issues with the train service. Tip: Follow on Twitter @CapMetroATX for up-to-the-minute news on changes to the service schedule & special discounts from partner businesses. Use the CapMetro comment form https://app.capmetro.org/ServiceOneWebCCR to report issues found at the station or with a specific ride experience. Trains fill up during special events like SXSW, so prepare a plan B (like ride share or one of the night-owl buses https://www.capmetro.org/latenight/) for getting back up north at the end of the day if you fail to get on the last train home.
