My nephew's birthday is in April and he's very fond of comic books. My brother asked me to look for Marvel comic books in Austin. First, visit Dragon's Lair Comics & Fantasy. From the outside, it sits quietly in a North Austin shopping center near Hop Doddy's. If you blink, you might miss it. Once you step through the doors, you feel transported to a totally different place like Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the Harry Potter story. You find shelves of comics, books, games...everywhere your imagination can take you. Dragon's Lair has been part of the Austin community since 1986. You feel a rush to flip through comics, try on costumes or transport yourself to a fantasy land. New releases co-exist with long loved series. Stopped I the pick up my reserved copy of Batmsn/Deadpool. This is a great place and we always enjoy coming here, they have so much beyond comics from games to candles to Tarot. Updated review because I wrote one in 2021, and I keep coming back. It's still a great place to shop, definitely eased up on the COVID restrictions as most places have now. Hubs and I enjoy just browsing in here from time to time, but the pricing is solid too. There's a ton of products to choose from. I tend to pick things up in the comic aisles while husband will snag a board game or expansion pack to try. The workers are all really chill and welcoming. We've been here a few times there's some kind of tournament going on, and to a couple of outsiders it looks like it's all going smoothly. The store has life sized action figures on display and tables where you can play games but I think you have to reserve the tables. This game shop has something for everyone. Board games, TCGs, comics, collectibles. I was seriously overwhelmed!! I came here looking to add to my board game collection but ended up walking out with a few other things too. I got some merch from the business itself with a pin and candles. Nerd heaven! I've been to Dragon's Lair since I was a kid when they used to be at their old location in Burnet. They have an incredible selection of table top games/board games, comics, gifts, and more. I love being able to see folks of all ages playing D&D or other games here. I like that you can actually try out board games at the tables in the back. The store is spacious and clean. Bonus for the cats that roam around the store as you're browsing. From the outside, the store looks deceptively small, but once inside, it's quite spacious and filled to the ceiling with every imaginable game, book, model, comic, figurine, poster, jewelry and even some soy candles. Not perfect but awfully close. Dragon's Lair is on my list of "must visit" comics and game stores when I'm in Texas and I make sure to get there at least a half dozen times a year. It offers a great combination of comics and games without creating the feeling that one is favored over the other. The staff is well informed and always ready to help. There always seems to be several active games underway. There are always new comics and the latest board and collectibles games at fair prices. Love this place!! They have such a large range of board games to choose from. For a store in Austin, the interior was very large and their selection of games is one of the best in the city. I also loved how clean and welcoming the shop felt. Would recommend it if you're looking to buy a new board game. A COVID update, this place makes sure their customers understand the rules. Theres a cordoned off area at the door where you're stopped as you enter and greeted. You're asked to use the hand sanitizer they provide, reminded to stay masked and stay socially distanced. I know not everyone is into that but I appreciated it since this is a gaming store with social interaction as much as a comics store. On the comics side, btw, they still have a huge, well organized selection and we were asked several times by multiple employees if we needed any help finding anything. Good service! In the market for a board game, RPG, miniature, manga, fantasy novel, or graphic novel? (And puppets. Can't forget the puppets.) As far as I'm concerned, Dragon's Lair is one of Austin's hidden gems when it comes to all of this stuff. Also, to my amazement I spotted something I haven't seen in years - probably because I come from real-estate scarce California: a bunch of gaming tables, complete with gamers enthusiastically battling through a multitude of worlds. It's been years and years since I did any RPG'ing but at least I can enjoy the selection of novels, both graphic and regular old text format. Also, one can't help but admire the craftsmanship of the figurines and (my personal favorite) the steampunk weapons. Definitely worth a visit if you're into any of the things I mentioned! My only caution is to be prepared to park a fair distance out into the parking lot during mealtimes. Only the best board game/card game, comic place, manga, figurines and more place to visit! There are so many things to view and people to see everytime you visit. I really love shopping here and they keep the store so clean and it never smells icky for having kitties roaming the store as well as nerds who one could typically wonder when the last time they bathed was... Their prices are not "competitive" per say, but when dealing with local business, they have to stay in competition against Amazon and other chain retailers and I really wholeheartedly am OK paying more to ensure that they stay alive in order to keep the Austin gaming community here. There are an abundance of folks that play warhammer or D&D or lots of card based games here on the weekends, as well as meet-ups that gather in their spaces. I really enjoy the 3DS meet up on Saturday afternoons in order to help myself to streetpasses. All in all, it's a great place to also check out games you're interested in as they have a HUGE shelf full of demo games for you to open and play with friends. I can say with much confidence that all of the employees I've encountered were knowledgeable, very helpful when I asked questions, and one employee even went up to me to recommend another horror story manga to read since I was carrying around a couple of Junji Ito hardcover book collections. Very unfortunately, I did not remember what title she wanted me to read since it had been a long Sunday afternoon. This place spans a spectrum of pop culture and indie reads for someone from a fandom to enjoy, or for someone like myself who is a seldom consumer of comic books and graphic novels. I'm not surprised to find a manga for Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor, a board game for Resident Evil 2(?), and a copy of Maus that I had to read for "German Literature and Culture: Holocaust and Film" in college 10 or 11 years ago. The owner knows exactly what people are interested in, and it shows since I left with those two Junji Ito books. The atmosphere, when browsing through the sci-fi/fantasy/pop culture products helped invite conversation about what we thought about how comic book movies and its characters are handled, the state of animation and story quality in anime, and discovering that a classmate from our middle school and high school is now an established voice actress on the Greater Austin Comic Con poster, between my friend and me. I've been to other stores of this type and those stores did not inspire me to examine all the media I've consumed and how much they changed; they merely had the most popular assortments, inattentive employees, and I left not wanting to come back. This comic and game store is amazing! I'm a fish out of water here and the staff always takes my son in under their wing. They can go on about things and inform him of everything he needs.
