Dear McMenamins Team, My girlfriend and I have been big fans of McMenamins ever since we were introduced to it 4 years ago. As a way to deepen our experience, I surprised her with a pair of Passports so we could visit and enjoy all of the McMenamins locations across the Pacific Northwest. Since then, we've been strategic in planning our visits based on the regions we're in or planning to explore. So far, our Passport journey has been nothing short of fantastic, getting to see new locations, try different bars, and meet friendly and welcoming staff along the way. On Sunday, September 28th, we were on a mission to complete the Portland Eastside page in our Passports. We carefully timed our visits and planned our route so we could finish at Highland Pub & Brewery, our final stop for the page. We arrived 20 minutes before the listed closing time, only to find the doors already locked. We saw that there were still 2 customers sitting at the bar, so we tried to get the bartender's attention through the window, hoping to explain that we only needed a stamp. Unfortunately, the bartender saw us, shrugged, and did not engage. This was extremely disappointing. We were excited to complete that page and claim our prize, and now we'll have to go out of our way to revisit the location just for that one stamp. We understand that operations can vary by location, but we believe that all McMenamins locations should honor their posted closing hours, especially for Passport holders who are trying to complete pages. A stamp takes only a moment and would go a long way toward supporting loyal customers like us who are actively participating in this unique and memorable program. We kindly ask that this issue be addressed with the Highland Pub & Brewery team. We're hopeful that in the future, they, and other locations, will continue to accommodate Passport stamps right up until closing time. Ever in search of additional passport stamps, my wife and I stopped into the Highland Pub for lunch this last Sunday. This particular McMenamins location, like many of their smaller locales, doesn't have any of the features that make a McMenamins stand out above the crowd. Sure, the décor is cozy, warmly lit and filled with that special hippie kitsch, but at the end of the day, it's just a pub...although a quirky one! Service was...serviceable: punctual and efficient, although not particularly engaging. Still, our drinks, soup and sandwich all arrived in short order. I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed the African Peanut Chicken soup, being not much of a fan of peanut anything. The seasonal special Roadhouse Crispy Chicken Sandwich was great as well, but its description on the menu is a bit deceptive: it boasts Dark Star hot sauce, but apparently they just mix it into the butter used on the bread which, in my opinion, is not enough. However, we ordered a side of the sauce, and once applied, perfected it. The Highland Pub isn't going to transform your opinion of the McMenamins franchise on its own, but it's also not doing any damage to the brand, either. Come here for a solid lunch paired with a pint or cocktail of your choice, and some reasonable expectations, and you'll leave satisfied. read more

First time visiting this Mcmenamins. We were surprised to see a lot of string lights all over the rafters to illuminate the restaurant. We order a cheeseburger and bacon cheeseburger and a Trippy Cider, which consists of mixture of pomegranate, peach and pineapple juices. That was delicious. Highly recommended it. A good tart and sweet taste to it. I ordered regular tater tots and it was crispy when I received it. Of course, I finished the tater tots and my cider right away. My burger was medium rare. It's a pretty typical McMenamins but it's in a strip mall so lacking some of the ambience and allure. The staff seem to always be a bit understaffed and frantic. Their prices have also recently skyrocketed (I get it l, inflation is rough, but it seems a bit high for their quality). This is half way between a friend and me though, so I'll probably keep coming back simply for that reason. read more

Can someone from corporate reach out. The waiter who looks like he's 15 and think his name was Ian or Ivan or something with an I. He's very nice but I think before you serve your customers ill tasting coleslaw that you test it everyday for freshness. I love coleslaw and I went into this establishment as a regular human but now I'm a jet propulsion expert on how not to fly off your toilet. I literally had just a taste of it and spit it out immediately because it was rancid and now I'm thinking about a new career in Astro physics. If Dyson can do it so can they. Instead of cleaning a mess it can completely make you understand the full meaning of a regret. All this just to get stamps in a passport and support a local business... (rethink what you're trying to support) even after booking a room @ St Francis School and it's completely different coleslaw by smell... The rooms cute but they will probably need to remodel this room. This place is a constant revolving door of people that just want stamps but no one ordering food or drink, Just getting stamps before they go to the event for free food and drink... (good luck) Let me iterate that my rear end can now be part of NASA research cuz I had a taste of questionable coleslaw and immediately spit it out. I'll start with the fact that I'm a McMenamins fan. I like their vibes, I like their beer, and I like their food. I don't go here looking for a "blow me away meal", I go looking for delicious food, fresh french fries (some of the best I've had in the Portland area), and a stellar list of beer options that will satisfy and beer tastes. Highland Pub is my local McMenamins and I tend to wind up there more than I do some of their more unique locations (Edgefield, for example). I love that it still has the unique charm they come with, it's comfortable, warm feeling, and has some decor that sets them apart from other locations (the chandelier from the Crystal Ballroom, for example). It's a good neighborhood spot to take our out of town guests when we're hungry and don't want to cook. I'm doing this review based on my experience this week. I was elated when indoor dining opened back up for our area but have been cautious to partake for a variety of reasons. We finally caved and headed to Highland Pub for an easy night where someone else will make the food and pour the beers. Both my husband and I had burgers and while I always love their burgers, they were very good this trip. The fries and tots were also crisp just like they are supposed to be and nice and hot. Food was fresh, service was great, masks were worn, people were spaces, beer was cold and didn't come from my fridge - it was a great trip. So happy to see these restaurants holding on and I can't wait to give them more of my business. read more

Ordered lunch for 4 of us over the phone and picked it up for take out. Upon opening the 2 paper sacks, we discovered no utensils, no napkins, no condiments, and missing a drink. So we were unable to eat the coleslaw, and had no ketchup for the fries. My friend's mother has numerous allergies, so she was very specific that she wanted a plain hamburger. Instead she got pickles, lettuce, and sauce, so that her mother was unable to eat her lunch. I even gave them a 20% tip beforehand. I've since complained to the restaurant manager about the takeout lunch and was told that I would get a gift certificate in compensation but I have not had any follow up communication in regards to the offer, so that is why I'm giving this restaurant a poor review. Small tucked away Mcmenamins in Gresham. Decent seating area, I believe there are only two tables big enough for groups larger than 6. I've been here multiple times for their happy hours and to refill my growlers. The service sometimes is spotty. There are times I come and don't get served for 10-15 mins. And there are other times I get served right away. Both at moderate traffic. One thing I enjoy about mcmenamins is that their consistency stays the same at every location, this place included. I would recommend this bar as a starting bar because it's a bit small and enclosed, not as loud as other mcmenamins. read more

I just had some of the best Mac and cheese that I have ever tasted! I usually get the veggie hemp burger or the veggie African Peanut soup when visiting this chain. First time at this location, and I only saw regular burgers on the menu that could be substituted for Gardenburgers. When I asked what the soup was they said African peanut with chicken or non-veg chili. I was a bit bummed until I saw the High Mac option. This sound like comfortable food- so I ordered up. This was so yummy. I think it was the best restaurant pasta I have had all year. It had spinich, mini Roma cherry tomatoes, a brown butter creamy sauce, parmesan cheese, and hazelnuts. The hazelnuts really made the dish great. I should have only eaten half....the portion was really good sized, but I ended up eating the whole plate. Loved it. Definitely keep this on your menu! I don't know if this is a new menu add or if it is just featured at this location, but I am loving it! Woukd definitely come back here for it. Typical McMenamins atmosphere, but the gigantic Venician Chandelier above the bar was a great-grand spectacle to gaze at before leaving. We had to have a true Reuben after our last experience, so we stopped in at the Highland Pub and we were not disappointed! We split the sandwich and tots between us and it was the perfect sandwich, all pastrami, flavorful sauerkraut and Swiss cheese also the item all Reuben sandwiches must have...thousand island dressing! Not some special spread we put on all our sandwiches. If, you make Reubens with turkey and something other than thousand island dressing, call your sandwich something else and NOT A REUBEN! If, for no other reason, go here to see the most wonderful vintage glass chandelier, (Mcmenamins calls it out as the psychedelic-Italianate chandelier)that's basically hidden in the dormers. It's as if they are storing it for some future use. It used to be at the Crystal ballroom (or it is its sibling) and I believe Janis Joplin even sang under it once. It's truly stunning. Aside from all that, this place has a real nice laidback feel to it. This is one of the really old McMenamins restaurants and it has its own charm because of that. Don't get me wrong. It's clean and all that and you can see the place where the beer's brewed (or used to be brewed) through some glass windows. It's got mahogany running through the building. It has some old hippie type plants hanging and funky curtains to go with. I loved that I had not one, but two choices of vegetarian burgers. I decided to go with the hemp burger as I've never had one. It was pretty decent as it had a pomegranate/walnut spread over it. I got a side of salad with raspberry vinegarette dressing. The service cannot be too bad here either as the place is not really big enough for the servers to get lost and forget you, like in some McMenamin establishments. read more

We had dinner at McMenamins Highland pub again tonight and I realized I've never put a review on yelp. Chris was our server and I was really impressed and how much knowledge he had about their product. From my uninformed description of my tastes and what I did not like in a beer, Chris brought me two samples to try out. One I really enjoyed and was happy to order. But his description actually taught me more about the process of ordering beer. Dinner at McMenamin's is always tasty. The food is not what I would consider high-end, however, it is always good. Tonight's dinner was very well prepared. The food was delivered quickly and it was very hot and fresh. This is a place we go often later in the evening. I've never been bothered by children or drunks. It's a comfortable place to hang out with friends. read more

I wanted to put even more kudos out to the team at Highland Pub during this crazy COVID-19 time. My wife and I are both Passport holders, and we were aware that this location was now open for to-go food and beer orders, so we put it on our To Do list soon. We then received an email from McMenamin's saying that while they aren't stamping Passports, they are giving Passport holders 10% off all to-go food. We tried calling in our order, but the phone wasn't connecting, so we just showed up. They are taking every precaution and doing everything they could to keep them and their customers safe. We ordered, received the discount, and then waited in the proper spot (labeled "Table 2"), and within 30 minutes we had our food and my growler, filled with their Halsey Street Hazy IPA. We recognized several long-time employees who have served us in the past when we could sit inside. They were working very hard to keep everyone safe, happy and orders fulfilled. I still tipped 20%. We got home, and everything was in order, the food was super delicious and made just exactly how we ordered it. Oh, and the beer was fantastic! I love Hazy IPAs, and theirs did not disappoint. The wife and I are Passport holders, so we have been to a lot of the Mcmenamins locations. Many are hit and miss service and food wise The Highland Pub is one of the best. Food is consistent and we have always had good service. I usually get the Portland Dip with Tots. I know their beers well and like most of them. My only real complaint is they are on the high side price wise per pint. Best time to go is during happy hour. If you're towards Gresham, it's worth a visit. read more

This is the 3rd time I've encountered a rude server here. Today I was picking up my to go Postmates order and I was mid sentence telling the server what I was picking up. She rudely interrupted me and said 'Just tell me your name'. She tells me my order isn't ready and has we waiting around for 10 minutes. I've given the Highland location 4 attempt and 3 has been just god awful. All attempts were thru postmates which was delivered quickly. However the quality of food is pretty unacceptable for being part of McMenamins. This evening I ordered hummus patter and kids TNT and tots with ranch. Hummus was half the potion size it normally come in, missing sides, and the pita was all soggy from the bottom of the container being covered in liquid. Im assuming it's the vinegar from the pickled veggies?? Pita was cold and soggy. The TNT is burnt to the point its unedible, its rock hard. Along with tots everything is cold which is confusing since I ordered it and was delivered in less then 30 min...hows everything so cold? Super disappointed and won't be going to that location any more, I hope the other ones haven't turned this awful too ive always been a fan of McMenamins. read more
