To the point: I've lived in Atlanta 25+ years and Highland Tap is consistently my favorite restaurant in the city. Why? It's both a great rathskeller-style bar and an old school steakhouse. Also the service is top notch, a place where they will truly know your name if you are a semi-regular. Descending the front stairs you'll see the rough stone walls of the bar area with the red-wallpapered dining area ahead on the right. The large L-shaped bar has plenty of room to belly up (pro tip: the left side provides the best people watching) and the old beer labels under the bar top are great nostalgia. There are a handful of dining booths in the bar area and eating at the bar is also an option. For the dining room, a wait is common on weekend or special nights. Currently Tuesdays are steak burger night, which is an absolute steal with today's prices. The steaks are also great; not the finest in town, but a solid value for the money (the filet is my go-to). If you aren't up for red meat, the iron skillet fried chicken is a sleeper hit. For drinks they have a solid lineup of beer and cocktails but are famous for their martinis. If you want a memorable, old school night out with friends or a date then check out Highland Tap...you won't be disappointed.
You can find Highland Tap at 1026 N Highland Ave NE Atlanta, GA 30306. The restaurant is in the basement from street level, fortunately there's a parking lot with free valet parking around back and a private entry. I went to Highland Tap for the first time in probably 20 or so years - I first visited back in the early 90's when I lived in L5P. Some friends wanted to meet here for their Monday Night Prime Rib special - you get a very generous 10 oz prime rib cooked to order with one side. It was interesting and very nostalgic to return to this restaurant/bar that seems to have withstood the ravages of time. The interior is rustic with exposed wooden beams and wood tables - very masculine and old-school and something you rarely see or experience in the 2020s much less in 2026. We were seated without a wait (4 in the party). The dining room first greets you with a bar to the left with the room extending, essentially following the lines of the connected buildings above. There are stairs that lead down to additional seating that's a bit more private all the way in back - it's an interesting space with stained-glass windows. I can't go over the menu as I was singularly focused on the prime rib, something I haven't enjoyed in ages. We were given a sliced Ciabatta with butter. After ordering drinks (Sweetwater 420 for me along with wine and a cocktail) we all started with the French Onion Soup (we called it FOS back in the day) - this was made pretty much exactly as I learned to make it, served in a crock with a floating crouton covered with melted cheese. The flavor was delightful and once again very nostalgic - I do wish there was a bit more caramelization on the onions - but still very satisfying. All four of us got the Prime Rib special with various sides (loaded baked potato, brussels sprouts and for me the sauteed mushrooms). I ordered mine rare and indeed it was. It was a serious cut of meat and well worth the $20. Service was fantastic - I didn't get the chap's name but he was a frequent visitor to make sure our water bottle was replaced and to ensure out needs were met. Great experience.
This is our FAVORITE casual but consistently good date night spot. It's a non pretentious steak house that has excellent steak. Their "famous steak Oscar" (filet mignon medallions topped with lump crab meat) is the absolute best. Their beef carpaccio app is incredible -- thinly sliced raw beef that is so tender, topped with garlic aioli and capers, and paired with toasted mini sliced baguettes -- melt. In. Your. Mouth. Their fried calamari is also delicious, standard, good calamari. We also love the smoked trout dip -- great to share! Their wedge salads are also consistently delicious. Whatever you do, if you drink, GET THE MARTINIS. The espresso martini is SO SMOOTH, slightly creamy. Just perfection. You get a martini glass and a side car mini carafe to refill, so it feels like two drinks! They also make a mean dirty martini. Finally, the chocolate peanut butter pie is to die for. So creamy, perfect balance of chocolate and PB. This place is perfect for a girls night out or date night. On busier nights, get a reservation ahead!
Did someone say prohibition? This place is fantastic. You first need to get below street level to enter. After that a bar and then series a series of rooms. Food was amazing. Service was on point. Definitely worth checking in.
This is one of the long-standing restaurants in Virginia highland. It's got a very British Irish speakeasy bar White. Once you enter from the street level you can walk downstairs and there's a huge bar selection with ample seating. The dining area is separated from the bar. We were seated right away on a Tuesday evening. They had a steak burger on the menu which I tried and it was fantastic. The onion rings dough was strictly average and the french fries are also average but better than onion rings. The parking lot behind will valet for tips. Otherwise street parking is very hard to find. I understand Mondays and Tuesdays are their busiest days but will definitely come back on the weekends to see if they have other specials. Me and my friend decided to give Highland Tap a try after reading the reviews online. But we were very disappointed in the food. The atmosphere is calm,serene and very much relaxing. The people are very welcoming and kind,Excited to serve you. No issues with loud patrons at all. Our Waitress was very attentive and hospitable. She Kept checking on us for anything we needed or wanted and refilled both our drinks as soon as they got liw we didn't even have to ask for refills. But the food is BLAND. lackluster,subpar, nothing to write home about. I was so excited to try the prime ribeye as per the Monday night special, but absolutely zero seasoning/flavor. The loaded mash potatoes were alright. The escargot saved the night because i'm an aficionado for some great snails. My friend had a butger with fries that he said lacked flavor also.
We have been enjoying prime rib Monday at Highland tap. Can't say that it is the best prime rib that I have ever had but it is very good for the price on Monday evening. Service is pretty solid and the atmosphere is lively. Only complaints is that the loaded baked potato has, at times, been a little hard and overdone.
What a fantastic dinner and evening! We went for a friend's birthday celebration with a party of 9 and were seated in a nice circular booth with a couple chairs at the end. It was a semi-private space and perfect for our evening. We all enjoyed cocktails, dinner, and dessert. Our server was excellent and easily took care of our large party. I enjoyed salmon with Brussel sprouts and fries as my sides. The salmon was perfectly cooked, medium. It was the best salmon I've had out at a restaurant in a very long time. The Brussel sprouts were tender cooked with bacon and onion and the fries had the perfect amount of crunch. I loved the maple old-fashioned cocktail and the lemon raspberry cake was out of this world amazing, nice and tart. They have free valet parking in the back and a handicap space right near the door in the back. The only downside is they only do one check; however, I feel like many places do this now especially when you have a large party so we made it work. I would definitely not use that as a reason not to come back. The overall experience was fantastic.
Heard about this local spot and been meaning to try it as I live locally now. Ordered the prime rib and honestly it lacked seasoning on the crust (edges). I love prime rib and I've had it many times at different spots but although this one was cooked to perfection for my liking, the flavor wasn't impressive, hence the 3 stars. The sides were delicious tho - 4 stars. I sat at the bar and both bartenders were top shelf, very attentive service - 5 stars. The beer selection was good and sitting at the bar was comfortable. Definitely has a local pub feel and I loved that! Will be back and will try the prime rib again, maybe it was an off night and I really want to like it. 4 stars overall!
Chose Highland Tap for a birthday dinner bc they have Tomahawk steak & open late. Parking is either street or valet at Wells Fargo for $10 but valet closes at 11pm. We went on Friday at 930 and the bar was poppin', very loud and the dining area starts by the bar & goes back. If you're looking for a spot to use your inside voice, this isn't for you. Appetizers we had the oyster Rockefeller and spinach dip. It was ok, cheese could have been more toasted at the top, same for the spinach dip. Bread that came with dip was ok. For cocktails, had their Maple Old Fashioned - tasted the bourbon, it was good. Prior to ordering the Tomahawk, I asked our server about it. For $80 I wanted it to be dang near perfect from the seasoning to the cook. Our server didn't seem to confident, but we went for it as that is what the bday boy wanted. When it hit the table, looked good, nice cook on the meat. Unfortunately, it was not seasoned...not a trace of salt. We had to use the salt at the table and get A1, very disappointing. The side of loaded mash was tasty. Our other friend had the salmon and said that it was also lacking salt. We took the remains of our dishes to doctor up at home. Perhaps their smaller cuts of steak are better prepared, I wouldn't choose this place for tomahawk again. I may be back on Monday to try the prime rib special. Big maybe though.
This place is a staple. It can be a tad loud but we always have good service and a good time. Shane took great care of us last time. The food is tasty and reasonably priced. If you like prime rib, it definitely scratches the itch. The drinks aren't the best, but they make a nice classic dirty martini that comes with a little extra in a sidecar. Overall, it's a good night out.

Just adding a photo of my fan favorite. Might seem like a weird thing to order, but Highland Tap's wood-fired meatloaf on a cold night is soul-warming. It's even more perfect when you're nestled up against a stone wall in one of the booths at the bar. You couldn't ask for a cozier dinner. read more

We celebrated father days there. We are from Chicago and this was very surprisingly good. The vibe of the underground place the delicious food, the kind waiter made the whole celebration a successful event. We will go back and definitely recommend. read more

This place is always a great option for when you want to feel like a member of the Rat Pack, and I'm not referring to rodents. The atmosphere is from another time. The staff are always bustling when it's busy, personable when the pace is a bit slow. They're one of the few restaurants that know what a Pittsburgh steak means. The cocktails are on point, and the draft beer selection is plentiful. Be sure to check out this hidden gem if you're feeling swanky. read more

Very cool bar! I don't drink but I enjoyed the atmosphere and the trivia. The menu is mostly pub fare but the fries were greasy but good! The beer list was okay, standard dive bar. There is art for sale on the walls that was very cool and not over priced. Staff was great. read more

We enjoyed our meal at the Highland Tap. It was rocky at first since we struggled to find parking and was 15 mins late for our reservation. However, our server was attentive and fast. The ambience is more casual, which we like. We ordered the Oyster Rockefeller, escargot and french onion soup for appetizer. The oysters and escargot were delicious. We cannot say the same about the french onion soup. The first few bites were good but then it started tasting sweet and cinnamonny, tastes we were not familiar with in this soup. It left a weird after taste. For the main entree, we ordered 32oz prime rib to share with mashed sweet potatoes. The prime rib was the star of the whole meal, especially with the au jus and horse radish. I would order a different side next time as the mashed sweet potation was borderline too soft and too sweet. For drink, we had the espresso martini (recommended by our waiter) and it was delicious! Would recommend this place and we would return for more prime rib and espresso martini. read more

We've been going to Highland Tap for years. It is our go to Restaurant. It just keeps getting better. Very consistent. Food is always prepared perfectly. wait staff works in tandem reservations or not. Half price burger nights Tuesday. Prime rib Thursday order a drink from the bar and be pleasantly surprised by extra side car drink. read more

I haven't been in years- since I was in my 20's. Went yesterday for our 23rd Anniversary & just about everything was perfect! The bar tender, older gentleman was not at all friendly or attentive. They were stready, but not slammed. Our server was super sweet & took great care of us! Our meal was outstanding!!! We had carpaccio, French onion soup & the filet oscar... nom nom!!! Now that we remember how fun (& tasty) the Tap is & always will be we won't wait so long to visit again! I am giving 4 stars, dispite the 15 mins at the bar... he needs a hug or something?! read more

I visit this place in a vacation weekend hide downstairs in a pretty town, prices was good for the quality of the meet! Tomahawk was juice and tasty, I ate that with a loaded potato was perfect and some collard greens a little spicy but really good. Service was nice and everyone was wearing mask read more

Great little place for drinks or food, we only came for drinks. They are one of the first places that gave a "side car" - had to google what that is - basically if the bartender makes extra of your drink, they put it in a small container on the side on ice so you get like 1.5 drinks for the price of 1. Love it. All the cocktails we tried were excellent, I just wish I was in town for the prime rib I keep reading about! read more

1. The Tuesday Burger Deal is an awesome price for a great steak burger. 2. The bar should make a point to consistently have a lighter Pilsner on tap, an Ultra Light Beer option would be amazing (Don't say "you can get a Michelob Ultra", they suck!, why not a Corona Premier?). 3. Healthier options for sides with the burger, besides fried greasy onion rings, or fried french fries (what about a vegetable salad or vegetable chips)?The staff is awesome & the bathrooms are clean, the ambience is pretty cool too... read more

Oh YUM!! First of all our server was SO fast and attentive which was awesome! Then the black pepper crusted- 14oz New York strip topped with poached lobster, cooked mushrooms, and cooked perfectly rare was FANTASTIC. All the food wasn't as hot as I'd like it but it was still really good. My mom ordered the the lobster burger and barely could eat half but stated it was GOOD (and it looked good too)! December 2020 I am happy to write this review. We parked via valet. Service was quick and bring cash for tips only. I dressed UP for this dinner, but quickly realized that it is a more casual environment,despite being served really good food and wine. Our server was attentive. Water was always filled. His recommended products were also enjoyed . We did baked oysters, seared fish (trout), wedge salad. All parts were super delicious and I could taste the freshness. Ambiance: 5/5 Price: 5/5 Taste: 5/5 Location: 5/5 Value: 5/5 Bottom Line: Tasty and diverse menu along with the 'Cheers' vibes and atmosphere is a win win here! read more

I loved this restaurant. It's been open since 1989 and has rough hewn rock walls and cool neon lights that really set the tone. Our waiter (and the cook) went above and beyond to accommodate us and were super friendly and knowledgeable. And the food and drinks were both great! One of my favorite places in town - Highland Tap has the charm of an old European restaurant/pub. It's downstairs with stone walls and dark interior, a beautifully painted mural on other walls, warm reds and old candle lamps on the tables. The service is always on point. Their cocktails are great... try the dirty martini! They give you a sidecar so it's almost two martinis you get. Monday nights they have a prime rib special that is so good for less than $20. The escargot appetizer is also delicious. Ohhh and the beet with goat cheese salad is amazing - I make it at home now too. Superb! The only thing I don't rave about here are their mashed sweet potatoes, they have too much seasoning. They taste like a spicy pumpkin pie, I enjoy flavor but not THAT much. My husband always orders their greens (he says they are the best he's ever had) - I'm not a greens gal so I'll just take his word for it. We go often, I love the Highlands. We always take our out of town guests here too when they visit cause it is always a big hit. read more

We came here for our friends 50th birthday dinner in last night. I started coming here a very long time ago but hadn't been in recently since I'd been working in NY for 2 years. I live in Atlanta again now. We sat at the bar for a drink while we waited for our party to arrive. The bartender Tom greeted us quickly and made our drinks fast too. I asked him to surprise me with a non-alcoholic "mocktail" and he made a delicious one! It tasted great and not too sweet either. :) Everyone else enjoyed their drinks. They're known for their martinis which are both made correctly and large as they come with a side car. A nice man named Scott sat us at a spacious booth near the front. Our server Dee was funny, friendly and all around awesome. She went over the days specials and kept the drinks flowing all night. I got the caprese salad to start, then the 3 veggie plate as my entree with a baked potato, asparagus and mashed sweet potatoes as my choices. All of them were delicious. Four men at my table got the prime rib and raved about it and my husband got the filet and said it was very good. We all got 1 cremes brûlée for dessert to share and it was fantastic! This place has great atmosphere, great service and delicious food. It's quiet enough to hear what people at your table are saying but loud enough to not be stuffy, laugh hard and have a fun time. A large table in the restaurant was super loud and clearly having a blast. lol Some tips: --This place is subterranean so cell service is spotty. Step out back if you need to use your phone or just enjoy being phone free for 5 minutes of your life. I loved that mine didn't work. --Don't be impatient. I see a couple of reviews here talking about bar service attitude or poor restaurant service. The bartenders make all of the bar, the lounge and the entire restaurants drinks. That's a lot of people. I hadn't been here in years. I went with some ladies from work. I was so hoping nothing had changed. I was not disappointed. The atmosphere is still laid back and intimate. The drinks are just as large and strong as you want. You can't beat the martinis. It's really 2 for one. But the food. Yummy. I've had a few stomach issues lately and this was one of my first real meals in months it seems. I got the rib eye baked potato and salad. Everything was so delicious. What took me so long to return? I don't know, but I'll be back sooner than later. Soooooo goooood. read more
