It was a Christmas craft fair combined with re-enactments of the Bible story. Buying gifts&giving donations went to worthy causes like hospitals, orphanages&food banks. They would serve up cookies, hot apple cider, coffee&hot chocolate. They'd have live animals such as camels from Six Flags. Main Street Bethlehem was a Christmas pageant kicked up several notches. Most of our circle of friends attend as well. Pastor Ron is a gifted speaker and lecturer and overall great guy. And the Staff is always ready to help with any need. From small groups to Bible Study at 9:30 Sunday morning and the Worship Service at 10:30, you will find NVBC an uplifting and affirming experience. It overlooks a small brook remaining from the heavy rains this past winter. The bookstore is small stand-alone beige structure. It's chock full of different-themed akathists (booklets of standing prayers). Sister Marie graciously helped me pick the perfect booklets as gifts for my family. I also got a brochure that concisely explained how the Greek Orthodox Church evolved from the beginning of A.D. year 1. Additionally, I got a lip balm with calming lavender and calendula made by nuns from another monastery. Sister Marie is an absolute delight, compassionate, and kind. She mentioned that beautiful renovations are under way to finish building with plans to host the public overnight by autumn. The option of a quiet retreat might be possible by then. When I was there, a gal had driven all the way from Mountain View (about 2.5 hours drive) to replenish her parish with a Holy Assumption wine order she placed online for pickup. I also bought freshly-baked chocolate chip cookies--they remind me of the ones my gramma used to bake. The bookstore also had many gift items including honey, beeswax candles, books, lavender oil from flowers hand-picked by the nuns, and religious items. I'm still buoyed today by my uplifting and heart-warming visit yesterday to this monastery. Thank you, Sister Marie.

As a huge honey fan (I use honey in my coffee and I drink coffee all the time) I can't speak more highly of the quality and price of the honey that you can get from the monastery. I've tried a few 1lb jars of different flavors including blackberry, wildflower, orange blossom and clover. One time they even had a buckwheat honey that was almost black it was so dark. At first I thought something was almost wrong with it when I opened it up and it was incredibly thick, but it turns out that that's how buckwheat honey is. The darker the honey, the more the buckwheat. They all tasted great and I couldn't be happier with the price. Last time I saw the nuns at the yearly Bazaar at St. Peter and Paul I purchased a gallon of clover honey! I'm talking 11.5lbs of delicious honey cultivated by those who have dedicated their lives to an ascetic path, I didn't even know I could get honey by the gallon let alone get it from Nuns! For 75 dollars it really is the deal of a lifetime, and if you're a fan of honey and/or supporting a local monastery consider making this the place where you get your yearly gallon of honey. The Nuns also make fantastic wall crosses and necklaces that I would highly recommend if that's the thing you're interested in.

The stained glass windows of various saints are lovely. It's a place for contemplation among the vineyards. It's a spiritual oasis when it has places like Michael Chiarello's Bottega/NapaStyle as well as Thomas Keller's French Laundry, Per Se, and Bouchon down the street. While it's within earshot of Highway 29, it is a place of silence and beauty.

Originally, the church was a non-denominational sanctuary... back in the 1800s, before Calvary Chapel. The pastor is friendly and the congregation is somewhat welcoming. The BIGGEST problem is the parking. One has to be strategic in getting a good parking spot so one won't be boxed in as well as be an appropriate distance from the busy road. The Oakville Grade/Trinity Road is a scenic thoroughfare between the Napa and Sonoma Valleys, so one has to be careful. St. Stephen's is in a pleasant, scenic spot. Most importantly to us is the fact there is absolutely no politics from the pulpit. That drove us put of the Episcopal church which has turned into a political party rather than a church. I don't care what their politics are; I just don't want to hear them from the pulpit... I attend church to learn about the salvation of my soul and that is what I hear at St. Stephen's. We attend here whenever we are in town and have come to really miss is church when we are back East. We think of St Stephen's as our home church although we do not live here. The message and the people who practice it are the best!

We have three children who have attending Hope since birth :) They have learned so much and grown so much under the direction of the Kid's Church (Sunday school), program. Hope offers many fun days where we bbq at church, watch movies under the stars and have prayer nights. I first began to feel connected after a nice lady invited me to sit at her table at the Women in the Word Bible study course. That was many moons and many children ago, and I am grateful for that small yet sincere invitation. My husband also has attended the Men's Bible studies. They get to discuss and eat great food! We love Hope Chapel.

Despite the fact it's a minor challenge to get in (and out),they have a spacious lot. They're a welcoming, friendly church.
